Title: Meet Me on the Court
Author: David Aro
Genre: MG/Sports
Rating: *****
Review: There are few reasons I requested this book; first, I have become quite interested in sports anime lately namely Haikyuu! And Kuroko No Basket so I am trying out some sports novels, second, this is the third book I have requested for West 44 books, one I loved (What If) and one I disliked (Some Girls Bind) so this book is going to determined whether I request more book from this publisher in the future.
Meet me on the court is about 3 boys; Cam, Tyler, and Markus whose team is disbanded after their school funding is cut so they decide to start their own team, but they have problems straight away as their team needs two more players before they can even be taken seriously as a team. I can already tell the two extra players are going to be the basketball girls; Jasmine and Brianna as they are friends with the boys and they all come from the same run-down housing complex called Alton Heights. I was excited that we can already see a rivalry between their school and the posh prep school; Golden Roots as this will set up some conflict later on.
The boys practice hard and do well at school, but this goes a little awry when the Golden Roots prep school’s gym is being refurbished so they take over the local court, but the boys aren’t going to let them do it without a fight. The boys end up challenging Golden Roots to a match, but they have a week to find two more players, with time running out Jasmine and Brianna suggest they join the team as they already know the boys and the boys know they can play just as well as they can.
With the team assembled they decided to name themselves the Alton Heights All-Stars. With the big match upon them, Cam and Markus are extremely nervous and aren’t sure they can win against the prep school who seem much more skillful and organized than them, but I have a feeling they might just win and surprise everyone including themselves. The team works hard and is rewarded but the best thing about this ending is that the team from the dregs earns themselves some respect. I will definitely be picking up the sequel Nothing but Net as soon as I can.
