Description
Freelance writer Retta Delaney thinks she finally has it all: her dream job at Popular Magazine, a home of her own—well, hers and the bank's—and a sexy new neighbor, commercial artist Sam Parnetti. But their budding attraction is complicated when a fortune turns up via the mailman. Delivery of that small packet sets a terrifying clock in motion.
Their romance might have to take a back seat to stay one step ahead of danger as the past snakes out, elusive and sinister, to threaten everyone connected to the package. A long-hidden family secret spirals to an unavoidable reality, complicating the growing affection between Retta and Sam. The couple, with a group of close friends, must put personal agendas aside to form an alliance against a malevolent enemy and the elusive truth.
The winner takes all—but it's hard to get answers when all the suspects are dead.

Retta has saved her money and finally purchased her own home. She moves in and meets the neighbors on either side of her. Poppy and her Irish wolf hound Xander are first to come over and introduce themselves and she and Retta hit if off immediately. Sam Parnetti lives on the other side and is not a favorite of Poppy. Poppy also informs her that nosy Mrs. Johnston lives across the street. Shortly after moving in a package is delivered to Sam by mistake and he meets Retta by bringing her package over. They hit it off and learn they both work for the same magazine. She is a freelance writer and he designs the covers. When Retta opens the package she discovers loose diamonds. What! Who would be sending her loose diamonds and why? The mystery is put on hold when her aunt passes away. Her aunt who lived a lonely, poor life in a house that is nearly falling down. She had however paid for an elaborate sendoff and to be placed in a large mausoleum. Where did the money come from? Is there a connection to the diamonds? Retta and several friends become amateur detectives as strange things begin to happen. Will they unravel the truth of where the diamonds came from or only uncover a bigger mystery? Will family secrets be revealed that explain why her aunt lived as a recluse?
I enjoyed this book and it was hard to put down. There is a lot of action and adventures woven in to the story. There are characters who are not quite who they seem to be which adds another dimension to the mystery. I give this book 5 of 5 stars. Well-written and grabs and keeps the readers attention.
