I think this book is really useful, as most art books dont explain how to draw textures too much. That's why I am happy I found this book and with its help I am hopfully going to improve my skills. It's good that there are pages about all the things you should have with some recommendations. I also liked the explanations given for each step even though some things are definitely not easy at first but this is not a book for absolute drawing beginners anyways. Still. everybody can draw the things explained in the book with some practise.
This short book covers basic drawing techniques and is a good jumping off point for someone wanting to get started drawing and improving basic skills.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. All comments are my own, unbiased opinion.
This is a short book which covers all the basic techniques for drawing and shading with a pencil. However it doesn’t cover a few questions I would like answered. How best to sharpen a pencil? How to hold it in you hand for making different marks? Examples of the difference paper makes to pencil marks and shading. How to keep your work clean as you draw? That said I would recommend it to any beginner.
Drawing: Basic Textures in Pencil is a lovely little guide to texture. Though short, the book packs in plenty of useful information for artists. I was particularly taken with some of the great tips for drawing hair, as that is an area in which I struggle. I will definitely attempt some of the techniques described when working on my next portrait. This is a book I would recommend to amateur graphite pencil artists who are looking to improve their technical skills.
This is a 40 page, step-by-step drawing book for beginners, “A Beginner’s Guide to Realistic Textures in Graphite.”
Contents are broken down into categories: Tools & Materials; Graphite Techniques; Understanding Value; Texture, Light & Form; Botanicals; Still Life; Wildlife; Landscape; Cityscape; Portrait; and Pets.
Each Category is “defined” by approximately two sentences, and so on, as things are broken down by item.
Tools & Techniques is broken down into categories of Pencils, Paper, Blending Tools and Eraser. Those four categories are broken down further. Pencils, for instance, has five different types of drawing pencils listed.
I was reminded recently that with the changing colour and the falling of the leaves that we are not far away from Hanukah and Christmas. Ideal for a beginning, these looked like they would be perfect for some budding artists I know.

A very good book for beginners. The authors focus on the textures that can be found in different types of drawing: portrait, still life, landscapes and more. The step by step tutorials are very well illustrated.
I thought this book contained a lot of useful information. Shows good techniques and worth having at hand if you are artistic and would like to improve the realism of your drawings. Textures can be very tricky.
This nice book covers basic pencil and eraser drawing techniques, and shows you how to apply them to different kind of textures. Where needed images describe the building fases.
It could just be a little longer

This is a good taster book for someone wanting to improve their skills in creating textures in pencil. There are not enough stages and instructions for the projects to make the book suitable for an absolute beginner. But great as a starting point, and as a guide for what can be accomplished. It great book for giving you ideas and for having a dip in. Thank you
This book shows ways to increase the quality of basic drawings with simple techniques. I liked that it described and illustrated ways that shading can enhance your work. For example, instead of using the darkest pencil or going over and over a section to darken it, the book shows how to use a hard pencil crossed over with a soft pencil to enhance a dark shade. A simple concept but something I did not know.
It shows how to use value, light and graphic techniques to produce a real time quality drawing. I have like to draw for years and found this book to contain simple ideas that will definitely make my drawings better. I only wish the book was longer. Contains still life, photographs and landscape.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
This 40 page booklet is packed with excellent drawing instructions and tips to add texture to your drawings, The step by step instructions make it easy for even a beginner to follow.
This is a short but really useful book about creating different textures with pencil. Texture is one of the most important factors in drawing and breathes life into the art being made. This book has a lot of useful tips and ideas for how to go about drawing people, pets and lots of other subjects. A helpful introduction to texture in pencil art,
Whilst this is not a big book, it certainly makes up for the lack of volume with concise and topical information. I found with some very short list of material on can make such realistic marks. The instructions were easy to follow and understand, and what I really liked about it, was that it actually did what the title said - nothing more or nothing less.
I really like this book

PROS
I’m on an art sprint today and this book caught up my attention for teaching black and white shadowing on nature draws. From flowers to puppies, this book guides us through every step to achieve the perfect texture!
CONS
Despite teaching some really useful tips for drawing, this isn’t a book for beginners in drawing at all! I tried doodling along while I read and it didn’t turn out very well. I need to practice, lol.
COVER ANALYSIS
Even with the cute puppy (that we learn how to draw inside), I think the cover could have been a bit more elaborated – it strikes me as a little boring.
RECOMMENDED FOR
Readers that would love to learn more about drawing animals and general painting techniques!
Ausführliche Einführung ins Zeichnen, allerdings richtet es sich nicht an absolute Anfänger, wie man schon am Einband sehen kann. Durch die vielen Anregungen bekommt man Lust, sich wieder ans Zeichenbrett zu setzen...
I'm not sure I would call it a book when it has only 40 pages, but it is surely nice reference material for those in their pencil drawing journey. However, read the title properly because this is not meant to teach you how to draw or general techniques when using pencils. It only focuses on helping you achieve well rendered textures for animal skins, fruits and vegetables, trees, clouds, man-made materials, portraits, landscapes, etc.
I would suggest it for those who already know how to draw or at least not very beginner (doesn't make sense to learn how to render a realistic strawberry texture when you can't draw its shape yet, right?). It is mostly a reference guide, with less step-by-step explanations and no troubleshooting section. I would have wished more than 40 pages and lengthier explanations on how to achieve each texture mentioned. I see it suitable as a guide for those already practicing pencil drawing interested in achieving nice and believable textures. If this is your case, this book can help you level up your art and make it look more polished.*I read it as an eARC
