Paul Nelson masterfully blends fantasy and history in a book that reminded me of why I love books in the first place. What I appreciated most was the fresh take Nelson took in what could have been just another time travel story — but ultimately becomes much more.

Known to only a select few, when it comes to time travel, there are many portals scattered around the world. So went the plot, it's just a matter of knowing where they are, or at least knowing someone who knows. The narrative followed a fascinating character-driven tale of time travel and shape-shifting. It was a thrilling ride. The storyline delivered the two main characters to a new world order that provided for them meaning and truth. It was a time of supernatural growth.

Good fortune smiled on Lily and her six-year-old autistic brother, Logan, when they happened upon the open arms of Iron Joe. A Native American of many generations, he took the terrified children under his wing and helped them flee from the life or death situation they found themselves cast into. Quite by accident, Logan discovered the hidden place to enter a portal. Iron Joe was conveniently on hand to make the transition smooth for the children.

In the blink of an eye, they found themselves transported to the same town 100 years back in time. Everything looked so different. The surrounding forest was laid bare due to extreme logging. The motor car had not taken hold and the townsfolk relied on horse-driven carriages. The luxuries they had come accustomed to no longer was no longer at their beck and call.

Even escaping to the past, little did they know that their lives were in mortal danger. Someone that meant them deadly harm had learned of the portal's existence and was seeking them out. He would not stop until the two no longer had a beating pulse. Lily knew that she'd be headed for a showdown with the hunter in the near future. It was only a matter of time.
