Description
At sunset in Key West, twelve-year-old Lissa falls into the gulf and is swept out along a golden path. Using her knowledge of art and poetry (learned from her parents), she navigates past the beautiful entanglements and curious inhabitants of the reef. Finally she arrives in the realm of Kwest, where the inhabitants are devoted to creating each sunrise and sunset.
As the newest arrival, Lissa is chosen to judge a contest between Day Crew and Night Crew. After demonstrating her understanding of art, Lissa is offered a choice: to return to her father and her old life or remain forever as a painter of sunsets.

Advance Praise
“ An “engaging modern-day fairy tale.” —Kirkus Reviews
“Aiming to inspire young artists, this fantasy story hits its mark, conveying that art is essential to everyday life and that beauty is everywhere for those who take the time to look at the sunset and listen for the artistry that can be unleashed by the written word.”—Foreword Clarion Reviews
“Stephen Evans imaginative young adult fantasy invents a vivid, perpetually lit world that abounds in swirls of luminescence and kaleidoscopic color. Above all, Evans’s elegant prose emphasizes the aesthetic value of art and the act of creation. Painting Sunsets’s fantasy elements are spot on, and the novel’s coming-of-age narrative will be equally engaging to YA readers.”—BlueInk Reviews, Starred Review

This was a charming story with a great message. I liked how simple, yet effective it was. Exploring the strange, underwater world and experiencing different kinds of beauty through many character's eyes was quite fun to read about. I do think that the characters themselves, though, were largely forgettable and fairly one-dimensional. Even in a MiddleGrade novel like this (which is what I would consider this), one-sided characters just don't do it for me. Also, although I found the actual imagery to be a bit lacking (beyond talk of some colors), I think the book portrayed the essence of the sunset/sunrise very well. i.e., The meanings that lie behind a sunset or sunrise. In the end, I liked this novel. While I don't think it'll have a lasting stay in my mind, I would nevertheless still recommend it to others.
