Description
Inheriting an old southern homestead in the deep woods of East Texas may not always be a good thing.
Eden Devereaux has a problem. After the death of her mother, she’s left a house on the other side of the state, in The Big Thicket of East Texas, and no one seems to know why or by whom. The benefactor has been sealed.
When Eden shows up to investigate, she finds her inheritance is occupied by an elderly woman full of secrets she’s unwilling to share. The local townsfolk are curious, and the river bottom people see her as an outsider and a threat. Then there’s the ghosts.
Handsome J.D. Callahan is swept up in the mystery and finds himself an unwitting protector of Eden’s and it’s messing with his plans for a quiet life.
The further Eden and J.D. investigate, the more mystery they find. When lives are put in jeopardy, and blood fueds are called, will Eden stay and claim what’s hers? Or will the ghosts of the past keep their secrets?

The House on Camp Ruby Road by Twyla Ellis. Zimbell House Publishing, 2019. Ghost of the Big Thicket Book 1.
After her mother’s death, Eden takes a break from university study and from her high school sweetheart to travel to Deep East Texas to an estate inherited from an unknown benefactor. Despite feelings of déjà vu and finding her house occupied, she settles in, hoping to find out something about her family.
Set in 1963 just outside the Big Thicket (where law seems just a rumour), this beautifully written, unique page-turner is unexpectedly wonderful. There are strong, consistent characters to love or hate, a star-crossed romance, a Buster-Billie romance, period racism, domestic abuse with perpetrators that would have been at home in deliverance, and cameo appearances by a helpful ghost.
I liked everything about this book. I could see this as a movie or tv series.
Disclosure: I received a review copy of The House on Camp Ruby Road via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is about the main chsracter Edith on a journey of discovery, through love, patience ,hope.Through her journey we are introduced to various characters seeking their own journry through life.
We read about hatred between poor and rich, black and white, town dwellers and country. All in all the book has a message for us all kindness to our fellow man,and making assumptions based on first impressions,a message for us all.
A story from the era that tests your mantle with its racist, hatred and abusive tangles. But it also had a love story that touches the heart, one not just with a guy and a girl, but with a house, its occupants and the tales they reveal. Here Eden wanted to know why she was the recipient of the house on Camp Ruby Road. What she found opened her mind and her heart to the land, the house and also to Miss Alma who is truly a character, a keeper of secrets and promises.
Eden learned the truth about her true birth, but it changes nothing it just made her love her Mum Betty even more. She never expected to love another but she soon learned she is not the keeper of her destiny. A beautiful and engaging tale with great characters and an awesome storyline.
