Drawing: Dragons Learn to draw step by step by Michael Dobrzycki is a fun drawing book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. Imagination and this book could that you to some fantasy worlds as you practice tone of the many step-by-step projects of dragons in here! Hatching dragons or three-headed dragons, the artist is sure to find something fun to draw! The book also shows how to draw scales, claws, and wings. This is a beginner's book but intermediate level might enjoy it too! This book uses pencil and ink.

Drawing: Dragons is a new entry in the Learn to Draw series of booklets. Due out 7th May 2019 from Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 40 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. This booklet is an excerpt from Michael Dobrzycki's larger work The Art of Drawing Dragons, Mythological Beasts, and Fantasy Creatures , from 2007 (isbn: 1600580122).

The book includes a general introduction to tools and materials which is identical across all the booklets in this series. The next chapter, specific to this book is a quick overview into shading, texture and constructing/anatomy which can also be applied to non-dragon drawings. There are 9 specific step by step tutorials for individual dragons. The tutorials for the 9 included projects are 2-4 pages each.

I could see this booklet, bundled with a drawing set, being a superlative gift for a young artist up to adult age. The drawings are detailed enough to look quite professional, but not so extremely advanced that they would frustrate a keen beginner.

Three and a half stars (mostly because it's an excerpt and includes a lot of identical content to the other booklets in the series) - rounded up to four stars for the quality of the instructions and the cool fantasy subject. The world would be boring indeed if the only drawing books were on portraiture, horses, dogs, and florals.

Drawing : Dragons is a great small book that would be good for students in school or artists at home. A lot of information and techniques are included in this book.

"Drawing: Dragons" is a short, step-by-step guide on how to draw 9 dragons using pencil (and occasionally black ink wash or ink pen) and paper. The author very briefly covered tools and materials, basic pencil techniques, how to use basic shapes in drawing, and how to create several dragon scale textures. While this book is targeted at beginners, he assumed the reader already had some basic skill at drawing as his instructions were mostly "do this next" rather than "here's how to do this."

Most of the book focused on the 9 step-by-step projects: drawing a Fire Dragon, Hatchling, Drake, Hydra, Amphitere, Lindworm, Wyvern, Eastern (Asian) Dragon, and Drachenstein. The author taught how to create these exact dragons by explaining (in four to nine steps, usually about 7 steps) what tool and technique to use in what order. He didn't really talk about how to create your own dragon design, but he did teach the general steps of first drawing the basic shapes of the dragon, then refining the lines, and then adding details, textures, and shading. If you're looking for a guide for drawing specific types of dragons, this one provided good instructions and illustrations to follow.

I'm very much pleased with this one! Loved how detailed it was and it went step by step. You don't want to know how long I doodled dragon scales!

However, this is very much past my drawing knowledge and it's nearly impossible for me to execute correctly. I would recommend this book to people with a bit more experience.

A step by step guide for drawing. While it’s focus is the mythical dragon in various poses and incarnations, it does provide transferable skills that will benefit any budding artist.

An in-depth look into drawing, Drawing Dragons gives you a lot of information and walks you through the drawing process. I really like how the author spent a lot of time on shading; it's an area I need teh most work on. I feel like I benefited a lot from reading this.

For full disclosure I cannot draw at all.....well I can manage a very basic dog or rabbit face. My other half however and daughter are more artistically inclined but with not great results. So I was interested to receive Drawing: Dragons and Drawing:Faces and Features. Could it improve them or teach me to draw. Well yes and no. The results are promising for them, they've picked up some great techniques. Me however, well I think my outlet is words not pictures and a book can't change that. But I can't give them less than five stars just from seeing the improvement in especially my seven year olds drawing.

This is a good book for those interested in dragons and fantasy drawing. I was a little confused by the level it was aimed at so decided it must be between beginner and intermediate. There are not quite enough steps for a complete beginner and probably not enough detail or variety for a more advanced artist. I liked a few of the projects but would probably prefer a book that matched my own style. Generally the information was good and the book is well laid out.

Thanks to NetGalley, I was able to read a digital ARC of Drawing: Dragons by Michael Dobrzycki.

This booklet begins with about eight pages on choosing tools and materials, shading techniques, creating textures and constructing creatures. The remaining 30 pages or so are divided into projects showing how to construct and detail nine different types of dragon or drake.

This is a very spare book, and for my personal tastes not detailed enough. The pages on shading techniques and creating textures were very interesting and I wish there had been more on those topics. My tastes aside, I think this is a book kids into drawing dragons would love and have a lot of fun with.

Drawing: Dragons by Michael Dobrzycki was very good and loved drawing these. Many great pictures were drawn for my nephew who loved Dragons.

Big Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion

DRAWING: DRAGONS is definitely aimed more toward the advanced beginner, despite having a lot of reference tools in the beginning of the book for drawers of every level. I did really like that there was an area about sketching out different textures before actually drawing a dragon because it sort of guided a beginner through some of the key points of drawing dragons (the scales, etc.).

I am not a very skilled artist, but I really enjoyed getting a chance to use this book to help me get started a bit.
The instructions are very easy to follow, the drawings are awesome and despite the fact that it is pretty hard to draw a dragon it did make it easier to do so.
Now all there is left to do is just practice, practice practice, and with this book it is easy to do so.

My Review: This was a great little beginner book on drawling dragons. I would say that you will find yourself taking your time drawling these dragons to really get into giving them detail. I know my oldest could most likely pop these out like nothing but she has been non stop drawing for sometime now. I did love how each one gave you 6 steps to draw each dragon which really helps get to the most detailed dragon you can get. As well as being able to add your own flair to them. I would recommend this title to anyone who loves dragons and loves to draw.

Drawing Dragons Learn to draw step by step by Michael Dobrzycki is a very fun “how to book” that will show you step by step and shape by shape how to easily draw different kinds of dragons.

I see this book as a beginners book, but I believe that an intermediate artist can also enjoy and learn from the tutorials and techniques presented in this book.

The book is rather short, with only 40 pages of content, still, that is plenty enough to feature 9 different dragons to draw, as well as sections for tools and materials, shading techniques, and construction.

The 9 different dragons found in this book are:

Fire Dragon
Hatchling
Drake
Hydra
Amphitere
Lindworm
Wyvern
Eastern Dragon
Drachenstein

The written instructions are accompanied by drawings you can use as a reference when drawing dragons. They are short and to the point, but will let you know just what to do next.

The final drawings look very detailed and professional, but by breaking them down to steps and easy shapes, they become so easy to follow and recreate. I gave it a try myself and I drew the Lindworm. I wasn’t able to make it look exactly the same, but it came so close, and my 8-year-old son was impressed with my tiny drawing. I hope to inspire him to pick up a pencil and give it a try too.

These dragon drawings are amazing and are broken down so even a beginner can come up with a ferocious looking beast! There are type names for each dragon example and plenty of help at the beginning for shading and enhancing as well as materials. Excellent book! My grandson will definitely be getting a copy of this one!

Thank you, NetGalley for the preview of this eBook.

Drawing Dragons by Michael Dobrzycki is the latest addition to the 'STep by Step' series and I had so much fun drawing some of these dragons. The steps can be a little harder to follow for a beginner, but it is easy for someone who already has some experience in drawing.
