Again, a delight to read! My household loves Big Nate and his crazy hair. It was hilarious when he wanted to sue the school when he fell!

Thank you NetGalley!

Big Nate: Hug It Out is yet another offering from Lincoln Peirce. If you are already familiar with Big Nate then you will enjoy this volume.

This is one of those strips that are primarily targeted at late elementary/middle school age but has enough humor beyond that level to entertain adults as well. Most of us can remember 6th grade and while the exact environment has changed the basic human elements are the same. That allows readers of all ages to enjoy Big Nate.

Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

Our elementary aged children love comic books and graphic novels and are always drawn to the Big Nate book series at the library. While I don't love reading them myself, our kids enjoy them so much and always find the illustrations engaging and the plotlines relatable and humorous.

Our almost 9-year-old enjoyed reading Hug It Out and found the family and school dynamics especially entertaining. These are great for late elementary and middle-grade students as the content is a little more mature than books like the Dogman series.

It's become a no-brainer for me to click when there's a review copy of Big Nate on offer; these aren't earth-shattering, but they are always of a high, sustained quality, and the narrative drive and character are a lot stronger than for many other syndicated comics. Here, romance is in the air at the fair, Nate finds his life equates with the school hamster's more than it should, and he even falls out of love with Cheez Doodles. If that reference makes no sense, worry not, for these are easy to jump on board with, and whatever the format all the books I've seen of Nate's have been worth a look. A strong four stars.

I have always been a fan of Lincoln PIerce's Big Nate comics and read it daily on either IG or GoComics. This collection has something for everyone. Parents will sympathize with the grandparents with the son who refuses to grow up and chuckle at Grandpa's antics.
I think that some of the jokes may be more understandable to those who are more familiar with the comic such as Francis and his new book of trivia or Nate's nemesis Gina/Ms Godfrey.
As always it is light hearted that everyone can enjoy and characters that are as endearing as any of the Peanut's gang.
I highly recommend this for readers of any age.

It is always nice to read every panel in Big Nate. It is hilarious as always. Not only when he is with his friends, but also when there are Gina or Mr principal on it.

I wish I can read another installment of Big Nate series.

Big Nate is so popular. The kids think they are reading a comic book, I'm impressed with his vocabulary and everyone laughs through the whole book. I hope Lincoln Peirce never quits writing Big Nate books.

Big Nate: Hug It Out!

This book, just like stand up comedy, ends with a pronounced "Puh dum pump," and a hit to the cymbal.

Kids love Big Nate and this will be no exception.

Big Nate books are always a winner in our house, and this one was no different! I had my son read and review this books for me, and here is his take.
Big Nate Hug It Out is a very good book for preteens with a good sense of humor. I liked when Nate met that girl at the fair, it left me in suspense. Also all of the pranks Nate pulled on his Teachers we’re hilarious.
I can’t wait for the next one.

My 10-year old daughter read this, she loves graphic novels, and has read all of the previous Big Nate books. She thought Hug it Out was funny. She likes how the problems in the Big Nate books are realistic, so she can relate to them. As a teacher, I think the Big Nate series is great for students in grades 3-6. I regularly recommend them to students who are reluctant readers, because they enjoy the funny stories.

My son is nuts about Big Nate so when I saw one on Net Galley I had to read it. I don't know what the other books are like, but this is a collection of reprints that appeared in newspapers from 2015. They are funny, and there's a bit of a through-line, but it isn't really a story, It's cute and can see why kids like it.

This was a cute book, as the Big Nate novels usually are. I let my 9 year old son review it for me on my blog. He seemed to mostly enjoy that there were other pop culture references in the book that he understood that made him laugh. He also always loves the story lines in Big Nate because they are relatable to him. I definitely recommend this and any Big Nate book to elementary aged children. My other 9 year old son and my 11 year old daughter also enjoy this series.

Nate Wright is back in another collection of pranks, fakes, missed chances and lost loves. He manages to avoid summer school by 2 points thanks to Gina, meets a girl on a fair ride, but never gets her name, and witnesses the thinning of Chad. In all a fun collection of Big Nate that hit the spot today.

Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read this collection!

Admittedly, I didn't read this. But the 9yo Big Nate fan in my house did, and he said it was just as good as the others, and he's looking forward to a paper copy he can read over and over without having to borrow my Reader.

I'll be adding this to my middle school collection, where it will circulate as frequently as the others, I'm sure.

I'm on Board

O.K., when the boys started showing up with Big Nate books I wasn't convinced that they had long term appeal. But now I'm a convert. Maybe it just took a while to get into the Nate vibe.

As is the case with most comics series the book comprises a series of arcs, with some one-shot jokes and some bits that go on for a while. And this one, which is well into the series, had many more appealing bits than I expected. Whether it's Nate playing ball, or missing out on hugs, or temporarily turning off of Cheez Doodles, there was a lot to like here. While the humor is never exactly edgy, there are a fair number of pokes and sly observations that keep Nate from just being silly. And who doesn't love "School Picture Guy"?

And this book features Nate being tutored by his nemesis Gina, which turned out to be very funny, mostly at Nate's expense. Underlying that, though, there was an authentic sense of how Nate felt about being tutored, and maybe it's that hint of realism about kids Nate's age that elevates this series above just Captain Underpants style silliness. In the same vein, while there are lots of brief or one-off jokes there is an extended arc about Nate's search for a mystery girl crush he met riding the Flamethrower at the fair, and that is a surprisingly touching and insightful arc that I admired very much.

Anyway, it seems that if you are a Big Nate fan this volume won't disappoint, and if you are new to Nate this is a perfectly fine place to start and to get a sense of the series.

This book was received as an ARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.

Big Nate is very popular in our library and we are always asked when the new book will be out and what will happen to Nate next. In this book, Nate runs into a mystery girl in the amusement park and then after he rides the ride with her, she disappears. Later at school Nate is forced to work on a project with his arch nemesis Gina and his friends say the best way to get through all this is just simply Hug It Out! The drawings and dialogue as always are brilliantly done and wittingly clever and I know our young readers will love this next Big Nate segment.

We will consider adding this title to our JGraphic Novel collection at the library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

Once again, Lincoln Peirce gives us a great collection of Big Nate comics. I love reading these books as a bit of a palate cleanser. Clean and fun, Nate never fails to make me smile with his hijinks. And getting to see his grandparents again was a delight. Grandpa and Nate resonate on the same level and it is just so fun to see. We also get to see Teddy and Francis roll their eyes at Nate and Gina is back as his younger arch-nemesis. Older nemesis, Mrs. Godfrey is back as well.

Four stars

The latest collection of Big Nate comics from author/artist Lincoln Peirce contains - for this reviewer - some of the funniest, most sarcastic moments of the mouthy six-grader's entire career. Unfortunately, the new school year seems determined to grate on Nate's nerves; from annoyingly gabby friends, to a high-scoring rival at the arcade, to having to be tutored by his arch-enemy Gina in order to avoid summer school, to being beaned on the baseball field, to ... gasp! - Cupid striking hard as Nate shares a ride with a girl at a carnival he develops an instant crush on, only to lose her in the crowd afterward without so much as getting her name! Nate certainly could use a hug, and Peirce's sense of humor here, along with Nate's big mouth, are sharp as a razor on nearly every page, while - even with his super-sized personality and ego - Nate still manages to remain one of the funniest, most likable characters in comics. I laughed at nearly every page, and keep a copy bedside in case I ever need to go to sleep with a smile. Keep it up, Nate; in real life you'd probably be a brat in need of a good spanking, but between the pages you are freaking hilarious. 4.5/stars
