Being female is a liability in the city of Kanta. As a young woman, Mercy is the sought-after prey of not only werewolves, but also of the dangerous and desperate men of the city. Her father has managed to keep her safe by keeping her on its outskirts, but he can't protect her forever. Now she wants to become a trapper just like him, catching werewolves for the bounty offered by rich and frightened men. When Mercy's first catch is a female, nearly worthless, her own value as a trapper is called into question. She's not even woman enough to attract a male wolf that would bring a higher price. When her father decides to attempt to sell Mercy's she-wolf to an old acquaintance, it may very well be Mercy who becomes the merchandise. The She-Wolf of Kanta is an old-fashioned thriller—with werewolves, a possibly mad scientist, and even a mysterious fortress. It is also a timeless exploration of gender expectations and the value of life, whether it be human or not. What determines who will be predator and who prey?
