Description
In this gripping follow-up to The Meadows, a woman trapped by her own fears inherits a house haunted by a legacy of darkness and a history of ritual sacrifices.
A violent attack that happened nearly a decade ago has left twenty-seven-year-old Avery Tullinger barely able to walk outside. Following her estranged father’s death, she inherits Whickering Place, a historic mansion in Asheville, North Carolina, currently occupied by two tenants: Colin Gallagher, a young doctor, and his mysterious brother, Pearse. Soon after moving in, Avery learns that her father’s life in the house was consumed by the supernatural … and the activity appears to be starting again.
As paranormal events within the house escalate, so does Avery’s attraction for Pearse, even though Colin warns her that his younger brother is involved in a dangerous cult called The Colony. Faced with losing Whickering Place, her heart, and even her life, Avery is forced to make unimaginable choices. And as Whickering Place becomes the focal point for The Colony’s bloody rituals, the house’s dark history threatens to repeat itself.
At turns a novel of terror and a story of love, Whickering Place is a paranormal thriller of nonstop suspense about the risks of living and loving outside safe boundaries and the relationships that change, motivate, and sustain us.

Received this book as an ARC, first time I have read this author. Avery moves into her dead fathers house and strange things start happening. This book has it all vampires, demons, love, death!! Read this book in a couple of hours, it was so good. This is the second book, it was so good that I have went and bought the first one.. I can’t wait til 2020 when the next one gets here. Loved every part of this book.
Whickering Place is a good paranormal book with vampires and suspense. The book is well written and is has interesting characters.
They say never judge a book by it's cover.. but I certainly did pick this book based on the cover. It reminded me of Netflix's 'The Haunting of Hill House'. I love books which have dark covers for some reason.
I really enjoyed this book. If you like supernatural, you'll like this book, it has it all, demons, vampires, love and death! I was hooked from the start, read it within two days. I haven't actually read the first book, so I will go back and read London Clarke's first book. I'm really looking forward to the 3rd book in this series, which I believe is coming out next year.
I didn't read the first book in the series The Meadows before reading this one but I still really enjoyed reading this book. It had the scary atmosphere that I look for in these books and had a great mystery too.
Vampires........I don’t do Vampires!!! they are on my no-no list. I thought this was a supernatural and haunted house themed book until I started reading it. What a pleasant surprise I got. Apart from one small lull in the middle it was a fast-paced and fascinating read. I had mixed emotions, feeling this was a modern day story but somehow I got a feeling of the past too.I will be definitely be reading the next book in the series. Many thanks to Netgalley and Books Go Social for giving me the opportunity
to read this magical book.

In Book 2 of the Legacy of Darkness series by London Clarke, the suspense builds, as we find Avery Tullingers father, Ace, has committed suicide. Avery and Ace were not close, but she was his last living heir, she inherited his mansion, Whickering Place, in Ashville, North Carolina. Avery is agoraphobic, likes her solitude and thinks this mansion might a perfect move for her. She moves in to find 2 other tenants, both brothers, in the medical field. Avery agrees to let the brothers stay and keeps the cleaning crew. Soon Avery begins to learn about her father's past as part of a dangerous cult, The Colony, whose members are vampire-like and have used the mansion as a meeting place.....among other things....
What seemed a therapeutic move slowly begins to turn into a nightmare, Avery must learn to conquer her fears to survive Whickering Place.
London Clarkes stories always involve a creepy gothic-like house that fit perfectly and totally drive the eeriness factor. I love how she melds the personality/history of the house with the life of the tenants. An atmosphere so macabre and frightening, characters that are engaging with just the right hint of strangeness...making you feel uncomfortable, totalling having to know if Avery is safe....amazing. I am totally looking forward to the next book in the Legacy of Darkness, due in 2020.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for sending this requested ARC e-book for review.
I received a free ARC of Whickering Place by London Clarke from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
The Whickering Place is a good book, but not necessarily for me. The story is a great paranormal story with plenty of horror, suspense, and vampires. I had my daughter (20's age group) also read this as she loves these types of stories and she thought it was great. She is planning to buy the series. The story is well written and well told, just not so much my taste in stories. Good job London Clarke!
*I was given this novel in exchange for an honest review*
I didn't read the first one and wasn't lost at all, if you just wanted to read this one, you totally can. This story follows Avery and then sometimes switches to the demons in the attic but the only human we follow is Avery, who since her boyfriend was murdered in front of her has become a recluse to her house. It's so sad to see her this way but I can relate to her fear of stepping outside the door since I live in a rough place.
So the monsters in the house start to feed on her fear as The Colony sets their sight on her. I mean, everyone knows virgin blood is the best! Duh! But things go all wrong, she ends up falling for the wrong brother completely! But hey, she's not the sharpest tool in the toolshed but most people in horror novels aren't or it wouldn't work out very well.
This was creepy in the beginning and then kinda turns into something different. It stars with a more haunted house horror story (Which are my favorite) that turns into vampires.... but not actual vampires, humans that drink blood...
I loved the writing and the flow of the novel was never boring at all. The characters are well developed and it's a good horror story, what more can I say?
Will go live on my blog 10/09/2019
Avery Tullinger has just moved to her dead father’s home called Whickering Place. She suffers from agoraphobia so moving from her former in a different city to this mansion is a big deal for her. Her father’s attorney, takes her to the mansion and asks if she wants to sell. She says no. Mariss Manners takes Avery on a tour of the place making Avery uncomfortable with her conversation. Why? She is glad that she has two tenants living in her new home as she won’t feel so scared of the place. The two tenants are brothers. One is a doctor, Colin, and Pearce is a phlebotomist. Until she meets them, she likes the idea of two elderly gentlemen living with her. As she grows to know them, she finds herself being more aware of “The Colony.” This is a cult that drinks blood and there are many members in the town. Her father was a member of this cult. Being curious, she goes to her father’s art studio and turns on his computer. She finds his electric journals and reads them. She reads them at different times. What she finds scares her but doesn’t know what to think, much less do. Why? What will she do?
This is a gripping novel. It is inventive and brimming with the supernatural. The novel has fascinating characters, powerful conflicts and complex emotions. It is written so that I found myself reading to see how conflicts were resolved or not resolved. There are surprises that I didn’t expect to happen. The ending is one of those surprises.
What do you do when you’re trapped with the monsters and your own mind keeps you from escaping? Avery has been through so much and the move she thinks will be a fresh start turns into a new nightmare. This book keeps you guessing until the end. You never know who to trust and at some point, everyone’s motives are suspect. This was good story with enough twists to keep it interesting.
I don't read many horror novels, maybe 2-3 per year, but this one sounded interesting. It follows Avery, who has inherited her father's mansion in North Carolina after a recent suicide. Although Avery's father was wealthy, he was very eccentric, and they weren't close. Come to find out that the house Avery has inherited has a paranormal history. This is unsettling for Avery, who is still not dealing well with a horrific trauma from years past and is emotionally crippled as a result. Author London Clark sets the stage well here with a large and creepy house that is sure to hold many secrets. As Avery begins to get a sense of this, you get the sense that whatever is in this house is going to eat her soul for breakfast!
However, she's not totally alone, as there are two brothers who are boarders there and have been staying at the house. As she gets to know them, it's not clear how they have lasted so long at the house. And Avery is still wondering what drove her father to commit suicide. This horror novel was well-written, with interesting characters that are pushed to the brink by the sinister forces inside the house. The supernatural entities in the house tease at Avery and the brothers' fallen humanity and attempt to seduce and pull at the strings that hold their sanity together. There are plenty of scenes to relish here, as the residents of Whickering Place try to keep some shred of humanity intact- will they be able to do so and survive, or will they succumb and be swept away? Avery in particular is a character to root for, as she has suffered much already, and it is an interesting journey as she struggles to leave her past behind and confront her fears. Recommended.
I’ve received an advance reading copy from Netgalley, London Clarke and it’s publisher in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own, honest opinions and are completely unbiased.
So I had the marvellous idea to read this book alone while my hubby was doing a back shift - wanting to add to the eeriness of this reading session - No Need what so ever.... I could’ve been in the middle of a dinner party and I’d still have been biting my nails and checking over my shoulder.
I finished the book around 5 am and hubby had 3 hours to go, let’s just say I did not sleep and every creak, crack thud (pipes) had me jerking my head. By the time he had landed home (I must’ve looked as though I hadn’t of slept as well) I was in full panic. I explained the reason for my “appearance” and he laughed at me... I bet him $50 that if he read it, and did not flinch once, it was his... 3 days later, I had a backshift... When I came through the door at 8am (we both work as nurses, in Mental Health inpatient care) my “knight in shinning armour” was sitting, wide awake in the living room, and you got it, holding a $50.00 in his hand!! Thank you Netgalley, this was definitely a book for the books (No pun intended)
This book was fast paced. Hard to put down. It flowed well and it was very well written. It caught hold of me and had me hooked from the start . I was literally on the edge of my seat reading this book.
Second in the Legacy of Darkness series, this book had me believing in the modern day vampires it portrays and their cultish grip on their members. I’m not usually a fan of traditional vampire stories but this was more demonic and quite frighteningly realistic, with the ritualistic blood lust and obsession of The Colony. I will definitely read the next installment when it is released next year.
'Whickering Place' is an intense horror read. . I really enjoyed the mood, characters and backstory. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I found it to be interesting.
I read this book in 2 days. I couldn’t put it down. I read the whole thing and then realized it was book two. But I absolutely love that it could stand on its own and was still amazing
I started reading this book without the knowledge that this was the second part in a series but I fell like this did not affect the way it read! I do feel like I want to go back and read the first part and then re-read whickering place though!
I really enjoyed this book. The story follows a woman named Avery, who after witnessing her boyfriend be killed in front of her becomes a recluse and refuses to leave her house. When her estranged dad passes away and leaves her his home in his will she makes the massive leap and decides to leave the comfort of everything she knows and moves into it.
This is all a great step in Avery moving forward until strange things start occurring! If you are into horror/Thriller/vampire books you will definitely love this twisty turny novel. I'm not usually a fan of vampire novel's but this one has a slight twist to it and it made it better than the usual vampire book.
This was a very good and suspenseful mystery. Just right for a quiet night in, and getting lost in this world. The nonstop suspense keeps your blood flowing!
This was my first time reading this author. This book is the second of a three book series. Although I can’t say I’m rushing out to get them all, I will say that this story had it all! If you like vampires, demons, possessions, and murder this is definitely the book for you. The entire time I was reading I kept thinking “this is the stupidest stuff I’ve ever read” but I couldn’t put it down!
