“Today she might meet the man she’d marry.”
Jody Hedlund’s second installment in her new Bride Ships series, The Runaway Bride, explores the relatively unknown history of poor and middle-class British women willingly boarding bride ships to seek a better life and to find husbands in British Columbia in the 1860s. The treatment of the natives during the smallpox epidemic of 1862 in Victoria is a part of history that may also be unknown to many readers and is very interesting to learn about in this novel.
In an effort to escape the pain of her past, wealthy Arabella Lawrence heads to British Columbia aboard one of the bride ships where she meets two very different suitors, Navy Lieutenant Richard Drummond and Peter Kelly, the poor town baker with a heart of gold.
Jody Hedlund creates delightful characters and allows their personalities to shine, especially with Arabella and Peter. Handsome baker Peter Kelly, with his charming personality and wonderful sense of humor, is a hero that readers will be rooting for.
Hedlund shares the powerful message of breaking free from society’s expectations and to discover God’s expectations and plans for us. Mrs. Moresby continues to be a beloved secondary character in this series with her mentoring Arabella as she struggles with decisions that will affect her life and the lives of those most important to her. The Runaway Bride is highly recommended for readers of inspirational historical fiction.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
“Character is much more important than class.”
Jody Hedlund has yet again brought us a delightful tale; full of faith, adventure, love, and finding of one's self. I loved that this book overlapped a bit of the timeline from the first book in the series, using main characters from "The Reluctant Bride" as minor characters in Arabella's story.
Beginning with their disembark from the Tynemouth, a chance encounter with a handsome baker, and a charming lietunant vying for her attention, you will be on the edge of your seat until the very end with this love triangle.
Throughout this story, you will get to know the people of Victoria, empathize with the plight of the natives on a deeper level, and see some of the unanswered questions from Book 1 tied up with a nice bow. You will fall in love, hold onto hope, and find yourself dreaming of happy endings from page 1 to the end. Arabella's story will captivate readers, relating to each of us on a personal level as she struggles with the weight of expectations versus where her heart truly lies.
From a long time Hedlund fan, I can't recommend this story - this series - enough.
I loved this book! The story was very interesting! Arabella comes on a bride ship, a group of women that came from England for the main purpose of being brides to men already settled. She meets Pete, the colony baker, and she really doesn't know what to think of him. He's sure of himself, with more confidence than a man should be allowed.. Their friendship grows, even though Arabella believes at first, that they are from different classes, and he is beneath her. He worries he may not be gentleman enough for the lovely lady. It is a great story I will enjoy reading over and over again! Jody Hedlund does not disappoint!
Jody Hedlund discovered a hidden gem when her research led her to the Tynemouth, widely known as the “bride ship”. This second book in the series tells us the story of Miss Lawrence who we were introduced to in the Reluctant Bride. The contrast between upper class and lower class remains a theme here, but from the opposite angle. Arabella is middle class intending to marry someone of similar station. In comes Lieutenant Drummond who fits the bill. But then there is Pete, a lower class baker. Who will Arabella choose? This is another historic romance that I really enjoyed. Can’t wait for book 3.
'Maybe it was time to let the wisdom of God's Word guide her.'
Jody Hedlund brings us the second book in her Bride Ships series with this one, my favorite so far. Arabella Lawrence, a wealthy young woman, escapes from a forced marriage in England by getting on a bride ship, ships that carried women to marry men they'd never even seen. But anything was better than the brutish and cruel man her father was forcing her to marry. Arabella is determined not to fall prey to such a man on Vancouver Island. There are two men here who would love to marry her. Lt. Drummond, a Navy gentleman who is upstanding and Peter Kelly, the town's baker who has worked very hard to build his business. Both these men would make good husbands, but they clash constantly. Their stance on the natives of the island and how the smallpox outbreak among them must be treated are at opposite ends of the pole.
Arabella is beginning to overcome her fears of somehow going into a disastrous marriage and then she finds a starving native girl. She accepts Pete's help in caring for the girl, but then things start turning sideways. Can she find hope and have her heart fulfilled and keep the girl and Pete safe? Or is she headed down the wrong side of the aisle again?
I loved these characters. Pete Kelly was such a fun character in this book. He could win over anyone's heart. He was absolutely delightful and had such a heart for God. I especially loved how he knew where he came from, what he had become and what he came out of. God can indeed make a person a new creation! And Arabella's character touched me greatly, too. She knows God loves her but is scared He will not bring her to a happy ending.
Hedlund is at her best here. I love the research she puts into her books and love learning about all the different plots she writes, based on actual events. It prompts me to check it out even further. Well done!
*My thanks to Bethany House Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.
THE RUNAWAY BRIDE by JODY HEDLUND is the second book in her Bride Ships series, but it can easily be read as a stand alone.
When Arabella Lawrence arrives in Canada on the bride ship Tynemouth, a spinster of twenty five who has run away from an abusive man in England, she is determined to make a good impression. Although she is nervous, she feels that her marrying a gentleman and living a genteel life will make up for the way in which her choice not to marry the abusive Mr Major has affected her parents. She feels that Lieutenant Drummond could well be the gentleman that she has come all this way to find.
Peter Kelly, the baker, is great fun to be with, very encouraging, and, after repenting of his former sinful ways, has become a truly godly young man.
The scene is set, but I am not going to tell you any more, excepting to say it is a most enjoyable read with an interesting plot, great characters and a strong Christian message. It is a book I can highly recommend.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
In this second book of the Bride Ships series, Arabella escapes a marriage to a wealthy older man to Vancouver Island on one of the bride ships. This well researched book gives readers an inside look of why women boarded these ships as well as their lives when they arrived in Vancouver. Arabella, having been taught to marry well, will soon learn to look beyond wealth for a spouse. I like that the character Peter was likeable and realistic. Arabella and Peter complimented each other with their hearts for others. Highly recommended!
Jody Hedlund has offered readers an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of brides looking for a husband, and a completely new way of life. The characters in this story were unforgettable and Pete was endearing from the very beginning. I could not put this book down and stayed up late into the night to find out what happened. Would the past secrets and an unforeseen enemy keep them apart? Or would true love overcome all obstacles?
The Runaway Bride
I could not put this book down! The Runaway bride was the perfect addition to Jody Hedlund’s Brideship series! I was completely charmed by Pete! I thought this whole story was so unique and I loved the chemistry between the characters! I really enjoyed the bold faith that Pete embodied. He was a great example of redemption, but showed that he was human and faced temptations and struggles that kept him relying on God for strength. These characters came from different circumstances, however I loved that they struggled with things in their past that allowed them to identify with each other’s struggles. The love story between these characters was perfectly crafted and I really loved watching it unfold. I just absolutely loved this book! I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!
This story takes place shortly after where book 1 leaves off. The women from the Tynnemouth have arrived in BC and the courting begins!
In book 1 we were introduced to passenger Arabella Lawrence, a woman from British upper class, and the mysterious injuries she sustained before coming aboard. This is her story.
The time period covers the smallpox epidemic in British Columbia when it was still a British colony in the 1860s. Small pox had hit the native population and readers are introduced to the prejudices of the time and those who opposed the pre-conceived ideas.
This is a great story about breaking free from societal restrictions. Arabella is challenged by the suitors who show interest in winning her hand, but both are from very different worlds. The influence of her upbringing and expectations from back home bring an internal struggle that turns out to be downright frustrating at times. Arabella waffles between her choices and I found myself annoyed with how she dealt with certain circumstances. It is obvious to the reader that should she choose a certain suitor, she’d throw herself right back into a similar situation she ran from.
There’s much to love and dislike about both suitors, but I won’t spoil it for anyone reading this review. I was quite happy with the ending for both male characters.
Secondary characters play a huge role in this novel and once again, Mrs. Moresby is a gem. I hope to see more of her and Pastor Abe in future releases for this series.
The plot and characters were solid, but this book wasn’t as engaging for me as the first book. There’s a lot of sexual tension (well written), but it was a bit too much at times (again, totally my taste). HOWEVER, I understood the challenges our hero faced having had the conversion experience he did, so his struggle with this issue wasn’t so far off the mark as to be unrealistic.
Another job well done, Ms. Hedlund.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
“Perhaps forgiveness took the greatest courage of all” is one of the many fabulous quotes contained within the pages of The Runaway Bride, Book Two in the Bride Ships series. Author Jody Hedlund’s research and writing talent take you on a journey that will keep pages turning. Some of the characters from Book One make an appearance like Arabella Lawrence, who is onboard the bride ship, Tynemouth. It seems Arabella is running away from an unbearable situation, and she’s hoping to find a husband who can offer the lifestyle she is accustomed to. Upon her arrival in Victoria, BC, Canada, she meets Lieutenant Richard Drummond, a royal naval officer. Then, she meets handsome, kind-hearted local baker, Peter Kelly, and can’t deny the attraction. Who will win her heart? Author Jody Hedlund has a flair for writing stories filled with inspiration and faith. I always look forward to her new releases. You won’t want to miss this series!
I receive a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. The opinions are my own.
Ms. Hedlund has done it again! She's written another page-turning story! I loved the story of Arabella, Pete, and Lieutenant Drummond. Ms. Hedlund does a wonderful job of developing the characters and setting. Additionally, this story is based on stories of actual bride ships, something I'd never heard of until reading this series. Read and enjoy learning about the struggles of being stuck in a certain class with so many expectations and how one woman's courage to break the barriers changes her life and the lives of so many of those around her.
I highly recommend this story for lovers of history and Christian fiction.
When I read A Reluctant Bride, the first book in The Bride Ships series, I knew that I needed to know more about Miss Lawrence, so it was thrilling for me to have the opportunity to read a complimentary advance copy through #NetGalley. Jody Hedlund did not disappoint. Although many of the women who boarded the bride ships to find a better life in British Columbia were leaving a life of poverty, some women were from the wealthier classes. This book provides a scenario to explain why a woman may have chosen to leave a life of privilege and to endure a dangerous voyage. When Arabella arrived in British Columbia, she quickly attracted the attentions of two very different men-- Lieutenant Drummond, a successful Navy man, and Peter Kelly, the local baker. I love the way the romance unfolds, and how Arabella's wounded soul begins to heal and gain courage. I also learned a lot about the area natives and the struggles they faced with disease and prejudice. This book is my favorite one so far this year, and I cannot wait for the third one in the series.
Jody Hedlund does an amazing job of setting the scene and drawing the reader into the story. In this case, she's taken a wealthy British socialite who fell into a difficult situation and thrown her into a rough and tumble area of the Pacific Northwest, along with several other women of various classes, on a bride ship. The whole purpose of these ladies' arrival is to marry the men who are in the area. A romantic triangle ensues, covering various classes and social stations, and ethical issues arise stemming from the Native American population. While the reader has the benefit of omniscience, it's very easy to see how confused our protagonist must be....until she isn't. It wasn't until the afterword that I realized this book was part of a series, which is a testament to how well it works as a stand alone novel!
The Runaway Bride is book 2 in The Bride Ships series by Jody Hedlund. Although we were introduced to Arabella Lawrence in book 1, A Reluctant Bride, this story can be read as a stand-a-lone.
When we “met” Arabella in A Reluctant Bride, we did not know much about her. All we really knew was that she was on the bride ship for some reason and that she had some interesting scars. In this book, we not only learn about her past, we also get a wonderful love story. I loved Arabella’s growth throughout her story as it felt very realistic.
There are so many good characters in this book, including some great secondary characters. But my favorite character, by far, is Peter. He is arrogantly confident, but somehow loveable at the same time. I think it’s his heart and sense of humor that really drew me to his character. He is the perfect match for Arabella no matter how hard she fights it!
I am really liking this series! There is so much actual history that influences the storylines and the setting is not one I’ve read often. Once you start reading this story, you don’t want to stop.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This second installment in the Bride Ships Series "The Runaway Bride" is a wonderful follow-up to "The Reluctant Bride" where we first met the runaway bride Arabella. Jody Hedlund gives us a glimpse inside the history of Vancouver Island around 1862 through this book and how social class influenced the decisions individuals of that time made. She also portrays the attitudes of the day towards Native Americans and the spread of smallpox throughout their communities from different character perspectives which is a good history lesson to us all.
In this book, Arabella flees would would be a disastrous marriage in England to go into an unknown future in British Columbia. She lands there and then is courted by two men upon her arrival, Lieutenant Drummond and Baker Peter Kelly. The two men could not be any different in how they live their lives and interact with those around them. She struggles between the expectations of who she should marry in light of how her step-mother in England raised her and taught her to think verses the hopes that the servant Hayward who raised her had for her future.
God's love shows through in this book as there is a lot about giving forgiveness and forgiving others. I pray that those that read this book enjoy the story as much as I did!
I loved the first book in this series with a passion, which always leaves high expectations for what follows. Honestly, I struggled a little to get into this story in the beginning. I hadn’t connected much depth of connection to Arabella in the first book and so it took time to make those empathetic connections. Pete is quickly likable and is quite the character.
As always I enjoy learning so much about little known history from the books that Jody Hedlund writes. This is her forte, and yet again she excels.
Sometimes I tire of the same thoughts being regurgitated and I realize that for Arabella she had preconceived ideas about who and how she would marry. Considering all of the past experiences she had had you would think she would have let them go a little easier than she does. I found it frustrating that she would realize how good life would be with Pete, or how free she feels or how much better she is being treated. Then in an attempt to draw the whole thing out, she’s returning back to the same old thoughts for why she can’t.
Overall, an enjoyable story that’s not to be missed. The Bride Ships series is a historical fiction read with strong romance elements.
Thanks to Netgalley for the eARC. This is my honest review.
What a heartfelt story!
Jody Hedlund has the gift of bringing together the most unlikely couple and creating the most endearing venture. More so, she lets these differences bring out the best in each other, such that their differences are only tools to make each other better. I won't forget this story so soon.
Arabella Lawrence has been trained on how to be a proper lady. She would surely agree "training" is all it was as there was no place for error, no place for imperfection or frailty. But there is a limit to which the body and soul can take demand until it breaks to never be repaired. Hence why a gentleman's daughter finds herself on a Brides ship to the untamed settlement land. There her shortcomings are only highlighted, but also, there is where she find the most unusual sense of purpose with the help of a skittish indigenous girl, an almost blind grumpy old man, and their beloved baker.
This book had me up late at night and getting grumping at anything that dared to bother my reading time. I am very much looking forward to Abe’s story!!
I liked Arabella from the brief amount we see her in The Reluctant Bride. Her story isn't fully exposed in the first book, but you know that someone has abused her which has caused her to run away. Yet I was hesitant to continue this series. Even though I liked The Reluctant Bride, the book wasn't what I would call romance-driven--which is my favorite type of read. However, this was definitely not an issue for The Runaway Bride.
Thankfully we don't follow the journey from England to Victoria in this book. Instead, The Runaway Bride picks up with the ship's arrival in Victoria. Arabella is immediately introduced to Lt. Drummond and then very shortly after introduced to Peter. Both set their sights upon her immediately upon introduction.
Before I even talk about Arabella, I have to express my absolute adoration for Peter Kelly's character. He can come off as really arrogant, but I think it's obvious that even as he's bragging about himself he's also making fun of himself at the same time. At least that's how it felt to me. He is confident for the most part. He's compassionate. I love how he had a past even though we don't get a ton of details about the actual events, I felt we were told enough for him to feel complex and well-rounded. He has a history with Drummond so even though he would pursue Arabella whether Drummond was interested in her or not, but their competition over every detail was both comical and at times realistic.
Arabella has to work through what she wants from her new life. She fled her home because she was being married off to a cruel man. So now that she's gotten away, she's trying to be extra careful with deciding who she will marry or if she has to marry at all. There were times when I didn't agree with or understand Arabella's decisions or thought process at all. But mostly she was easy to like and root for.
I very much appreciated the physical struggles Pete and Arabella had with trying to keep their relationship within the proper bounds. Pete has a history with women before he turned his life over to God so it makes sense that keeping things proper would be a greater temptation to him than perhaps others. Arabella was a little more of a struggle to me in this area. Only because I tend to get discouraged with people who pursue paths they know they shouldn't. Even though she didn't exceed any boundaries set by our current society's rules (shoot there's not much off-limits according to today's society), she did continually step outside of the bounds of propriety according to the cultural rules of the time. I couldn't fault her too much because when one has been without affection for so long, the craving is certainly hard to ignore and turn away once one has gotten a taste.
Favorite quotes:
-He was everything she'd ever needed but hadn't known until now. He treated her fairly without the condescension that many men used with women. He gave her opportunities to try new things, challenged her to do more than she believed she could, expected her to admit her mistakes, and allowed her to be herself without pretense.
-If God allowed those men [Job, Paul, etc] to face trials and tribulations, what made Pete think his life would be any different?
-...he could trust that God wasn't as concerned about giving him a happy life as He was about developing a holy heart.
While I did appreciate that there was a little steam to this (even though nothing inappropriate), I also loved the relationship building. The things that drew the characters to each other. Jody Hedlund did a great job with this story and these characters. Pete reminds me (some) of my husband which I loved. And I can't wait to continue the series. Although, I imagine it might be a little less steamy since Pastor Abe is the main male character. The Runaway Bride gets 4 Stars. Have you read The Runaway Bride? What did you think? Let me know!
A most intriguing read! I loved the characters and everything they brought to the story. Pete clearly shows how God can change us. I felt so close to Arabella, I truly felt for her. I loved the history that this book was so full of. There is Canadian history as a colony, the small pox with the Indians, the bride ships, as well as the way baking bread was done in a bakery. Arabella has so much courage to embark on a journey that could very well lead her back into the darkness she escaped. This story has so much depth and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. There are so many twist and turns that the reader can only delight in every page turned. The romance is sweet and clean, a brave woman daring to let go of societies rules. Jody Hedlund writes stories that gets into the heart and sole of the reader. This is sure to be a best seller!
Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
I love Jody Hedlund’s book and she has done a great job on this series! I had heard about mail-order brides in America but I hadn’t ever heard of bride ships from England to Canada. I thought this was a great view into history. I loved the romance between the two main characters and how patient Pete was with Arabella when he realized that someone had hurt her in the past. I thought Jody did a wonderful job of making the characters likable and of showing us a period in time that many of us may not be aware of. I look forward to reading the other books in this series.
The Runaway Bride
By Jody Hedlund
This is the second book of the Bride Ship series.
Fleeing an arranged marriage, socialite Arabella Lawrence joins a bride ship sailing to British Columbia. Arriving after a challenging journey Arabella is ready to choose her future on her own. Is she ready to put convention and expectations aside to live the life she desires?
Peter Kelly is busy turning his life around. He has a booming bread house but is missing something. With the recent arrival of the bride ship, Peter realizes he is ready to find a wife and start a family. After charming his way into the position of baker for the newly arrived brides will Peter be able to catch the heart of the upper-class beauty, he sets his heart on?
I found this book to be enjoyable to read. It was well written and the characters were easy to like. With romance, two suitors, and Indians there was enough excitement to keep my nose in this book. Through the characters' trials Hedlund sprinkled in faith-based wisdom that made this book all the better.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
*4.5 stars*
After devouring the first book in this series I've been impatiently awaiting the release of this one. Yet again, Jody Hedlund has penned an engaging read that the reader is sure to enjoy.
Arabella was a wonderful character. It was interesting to see the series continue with a leading character in very different circumstances from the first. She was born into privilege but found herself aboard the ship to due to desperate circumstances that was able to escape from. She was considered a higher class than many of the other women aboard the ship and while on her own she had to learn how to decide things for herself instead of listening to other around her. I felt that her growth as a character was very well written and it was easy for me to get inside her head and really root for her.
Both a pro and a con, this book read as more of a standalone than I was expecting. There were a few brief clips that mentioned other characters from the first book, but this ended up being more Arabella's story outside of the journey aboard the ship. I would have liked to see more female companionship with other women who were aboard with her, but I can also understand why it made sense for her growth to be more on her own. I'm curious to see what the next in the series will read like.
Peter Kelly? Oh, how I loved Peter Kelly. But I won't spoil him for you. You'll have to read about him for yourself. But his witty, fun personality made me love him and I'm sure others will feel the same way.
This was another one that I enjoyed and I look forward to continuing with the next one in the series :)

The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund is the second installment of The Bride Ships series, and it did not disappoint.
This time the author focuses on brides from a higher class, who chose to seek a husband across the sea. In this case, our main character, Arabella Lawrence, is running away from a cruel man she was supposed to marry. Old enough to be her grandfather and a despicable character, she flees to Canada, where she hopes no one will find her. By accident, she meets Peter Kelly, the town's baker. Someone, she reminds herself, that is totally beneath her station in life. She also meets Lieutenant Richard Drummond, a correct choice for her class, but not for a girl looking for love. Fortunately, Peter Kelly doesn't care about class distinctions and pursues her right from the start.
I loved the interaction between these characters. Peter was cocky, charming, compassionate towards the less fortunate, and determined to win Arabella. Arabella, on the other hand, was stuck in the rut of thinking she needed to marry someone of her "class." Slowly she starts to see how a class distinction isn't what matters, but rather the character and heart of a person. I loved how Peter wouldn't give up, despite how everything was stacked against him.
This was a delightful story, and I'm looking forward to book three. I highly recommend it.
I received this book courtesy of Bethany House, through NetGalley, for my honest opinion.
When wealthy Arabella Lawrence flees to British Columbia on a bride ship still wearing the scars of past mistakes, can she find her courage and her voice to stand for what is right?
An incredible story with unforgettable characters and exciting and thoughtful real-life roots, "The Runaway Bride" is a beautiful second installment to Jody Hedlund's Bride Ship series, filled with beautiful lessons in life, faith, and love.
I had high hopes for this novel after being offered a small sneak peek several months ago, and I'm thrilled to say my expectations were greatly exceeded by this true gem of a novel. Hedlund has truly outdone herself with this story and its characters. Pete is a charming yet humble hero (and is one of my new favorites of Hedlund's heroes), and Arabella is a truly inspirational heroine as she grows into her courage.
This story also offered an intriguing sneak peek into the next book's hero, and I absolutely cannot wait for the third and fourth novels in this series!
The Bride Ships series includes: "A Reluctant Bride" (now available), "The Runaway Bride" (March 3, 2020), "A Bride of Convenience" (June 30, 2020), and "Almost a Bride" (August 25, 2020).
Disclaimer: I received a free advance copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. I was not obligated to write a positive review.
“Today she might meet the man she’d marry. On the ship’s main deck, Arabella Lawrence stood absolutely still as a lady ought to do, even though the prospect of seeing her husband-to-be flustered her to a near faint.”- Opening lines of “The Runaway Bride” by Jody Hedlund
“The Runaway Bride” by Jody Hedlund is the next in the Bride Ships series which began with ”A Reluctant Bride”. Once again, a young woman has arrived in British Columbia to marry one of the eligible bachelors. Our leading lady is one of the characters we met in the first book, Arabella. Full of secrets, those around her try and unravel what in her past scares her. Looking for a fresh start, Arabella is determine to make the best of her new life.
Before Arabella even steps off the ship, she meets local baker Peter. The two quickly strike up a friendship and Peter is determined to win Arabella’s affections despite the other, far wealthier, suitors trying to catch her attention. Peter is compassionate and connected to the community. Horrified by the treatment of the native people during the smallpox outbreak, he persistently seeks justice for them.
Arabella doesn’t understand the political atmosphere she’s arrived in and instinctively helps a young, sick native girl taking her to Peter for guidance. Favourites from the first book, Mercy and the doctor, assist too. It sets off a chain reaction and Arabella’s world spins, challenging everything she believes about her role in society and God’s purpose for her life.
The characters are fabulously written, the story is fast-paced and challenging. Drawing on Biblical truths, Jody highlights the importance of empathy and compassion for those in our community. It’s full of fascinating history, it’s brought to life with beautiful writing.
I’m so looking forward to the next one in this series! If you love historical romance, this is one for you! It’s five out of five on the enjoy scale, I highly recommend it.
"Yet, as far as he'd fallen, God had held on tight. When he'd been at his worst, God's grace had been at its best."
It's another beautiful, redemptive, and satisfying historical fiction from Jody Hedlund. This is book 2 in The Bride Ships series but can be read as a stand-alone. The main characters from the first book make an appearance in this book but they play minor roles and their story is quite separate from the story of Arabella and Peter. Arabella is a well-to-do gentlewoman fleeing from a neglected past and an abusive fiance while Peter is a baker who has finally found peace and contentment in the wilds of Canada. So many things stand in their way - their vastly different social class, their opposite viewpoints in life, their differing outlooks and personalities - but they are drawn together by compassion for the natives during a smallpox outbreak on Vancouver Island.
As expected, Jody Hedlund creates a rich and tangible backdrop in the city of Victoria and brings out the main characters layer by layer until you helplessly fall in love with them. Peter is gloriously swoony in his romantic, sensitive, compassionate, and faithful way and he truly lives life at full speed. Arabella, on the other hand, is fearful, second-guesses herself at every step, and lives confined by what others say and think. Through trials and turmoils, Peter and Arabella learn to see eye to eye. The process of commercial baking in the 1800s is fascinating and enlightening. If you enjoy historical fiction, this book and the series are a must read!
I received a copy of the book from Bethany House Publishing and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Arabella Lawrence takes the chance of a lifetime to find a new beginning in Canada, escaping a difficult situation.
Peter Kelly is a prodigal of sorts, making his living as a baker, and also fighting for the fair treatment of the Natives. He is smitten by Arabella from the moment he sees her, but will his past exclude him from vying for her hand?
A fantastic read from beginning to end, from Peter and Arabella who instantly captured my heart, with strong bonds of faith that bring the story together, this was well worth the read. I liked the realistic setting of British Columbia and how it showed the very real tensions between the military and the native peoples.
I admired Arabella's faith and how she grew, finding the courage to fight for herself. She is beautiful from the inside out, with a heart of compassion for others, she realistically struggles to reconcile the societal norms of her past with her brand new life.
Peter is an honorable man, who has made his mistakes in the past, but come to a saving faith that has changed his whole life. I admired how he makes a point to make intentional choices leading him away from the past. He is a brave advocate for those who cannot speak up, with a strong work ethic, and heart for others.
This book had some of my favorite supporting characters, from Mrs. Moresby, Blind Billy, Sque-is, Haiel-Wat, Pastor Abe, and finally Mercy. A compelling read from the very beginning, with excellent chemistry and romantic tension between Peter and Arabella.
Though part of a series, this book stands well on it's own, working more as a companion to the previous book in the series.
Overall, an engaging read that had me riveted to the page, fantastic characters, great tension, with a good use of flashbacks, and compelling journeys of faith for both Peter and Arabella. I think that the author did a fantastic job of handling both Arabella's and Peter's pasts in an honest, yet not too explicit way, that only added to my respect for both of them. Highly recommend this well written read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Jody Hedlund’s second book in The Bride Ships series is the type of romantic historical fiction that I love. While learning about history, I watched a relationship develop which taught the individuals about life, themselves and true love. From the beginning of this story, I liked these two main characters. As they faced struggles and learned lessons, I came to like them even more. They both displayed true compassion for those who were overlooked and underprivileged. At the same time, a romance developed that was just as exciting as the adventures they faced. With lessons about family, faith and forgiveness, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I can always tell that book 2 in a series is good, when I want to go back and read book 1 again and just can’t wait for book 3! Of course, The Runaway Bride can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I know I shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but one of the things that made me want to read this book (besides the fact that Jody’s books are always amazing) was the cover! I think it’s stunning and the story inside is just as amazing. Sadly, I read this book as a standalone because the first book (A Reluctant Bride) is in my TBR pile and I haven’t had a chance to read it (however, It’s now on the top of my list!)
I’m not very familiar with the history of the Bride ships, but I can only imagine how hard it would be to board a ship with a bunch of strangers, knowing your destination, but not knowing how your life will change once you get there. Some ladies went to find a husband, others were like Arabella and were running away or escaping from something. I really liked Arabella; however, I have to say that Pete was my favorite character. The one thing that was frustrating about Arabella was that she thought she was better then most of the others because, she came from a wealthy family and sadly, that thought process almost made her marry the wrong guy!
Pete; however, is a picture of God’s grace and mercy. He left his home and parents, and got involved in all the wrong things, and it wasn’t until God got his attention, that he finally turned his life around. I loved how selfless he was and how although he knew he was forgiven, he realized that he was by no means perfect and still struggled with things in his past. At first when he was talking to Arabella, he appeared over-confident and definitely proud, yet the more you read about him, the more you realize how kind and selfless he is.
My favorite part of this book was when Pete selflessly gave Arabella his father’s cross when she needed courage. I thought that was one of the sweetest moments I’ve ever read. Warning, this book is hard to put down – especially at the end. Seriously, it was so hard to stop reading and go to bed (or go to work).
Overall, this was a classic “love at first sight” story with a unexpected twist and I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars ****.
>>Special thanks to Jody Hedlund, Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley for letting me read and review this book – all opinions are my own.
Jody Hedlund’s The Runaway Bride is the next continuation of the Bride Ship Series. Women journey on what is known as bride ships to other places. Their lives while on and off the ship change their lives forever. In this second installment, I followed Arabella Lawrence as she escapes for a new life. She heads to a new town where being single attracts the local men. But Arabella is wanting to take caution so that past mistakes are not repeated. New environments, new people, and second chances for the characters are found in this entertaining tale. I loved Arabella’s courage as she faced her new life and the people she met. This novel was both heartfelt and charming to read. I was easily captured with the story and its characters.
The Runaway Bride is the second book in Jody Hedlund's Bride Ships series. It can be read as a stand alone, but Arabella is first introduced in the the first book and the heroine in book one has a supporting role in this book. It was a good read, so if you like to read a series in order I would recommend starting there even though it is not entirely necessary.
Book two begins shortly after the bride ship arrives in British Columbia. Set on Vancouver Island during the small pox epidemic of 1862, this story challenges the expectations of the day to marry within one's class. As one of the many women who boarded the bride ships in search of a better life; Hedlund's runaway bride must decide to either follow the social norms she has followed her whole life or risk everything on the chance that defying them will bring her greater fulfillment. In a new world where men outnumbered the women 10 to 1 she finds herself caught in the middle.
Jody Hedlund, once again, caught my attention by the end of the first chapter. I was excited to see what would happen next, however the story dropped off a bit for me in the next few chapters before it picked up again and became nearly impossible to put down. Pete was a swoon worthy hero and I enjoyed his humorous yet impossibly arrogant attitude. Jody excelled in describing the stunning Vancouver landscapes, I felt like I was riding alongside them in the canoe. Themes of forgiveness, healing, faith and courage were intricately woven throughout the pages. Jody Hedlund will always be an author I read without caring about the summary or book cover. She has proven over and over that when I pick up one of her novels, I am in for a delightful escape back in time that A Bride of Convenience. This book will tell Pastor Abe's story. I can hardly wait!
The Runaway Bride is currently available for purchase from your local or online book retailer.
Thank you Bethany House and Net Galley for the free advanced reader copy. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Arabella Lawrence flees London and her comfortable life because she has no other options. Penniless, she joins a bride ship headed for British Columbia in the company of other would-be-brides. The only future for a well-to-do woman involves marrying well and settling down to direct servants and raise children. Love may or may not happen in the course of the marriage.
As a spinster, Arabella feels that her chance for a love match has passed her by. And she will settle for anyone. Well, just about anyone. After her precipitous flight from the alter in London, she has reservations.
When she arrives in British Columbia, two men take instant interest in her—a Royal Navy Lieutenant and the local baker. The lieutenant can offer her the life she expected, but the baker’s kindness attracts her—even though she could never accept his suit. Or could she?
Far from the confines of home, Arabella must learn to make decisions based on who she is in Christ, rather than her place in society. She discovers a world of difference between the two sets of expectations.
The second book in Hedlund’s Bride Ship series, The Runaway Bride tells the story of the mysterious passenger Mercy Wilkins meets in book one of the series. You don’t need to read the first book in order to enjoy the second book, though. Hedlund does meticulous research for her historical novels, which makes the books a pleasure to read.
If you love books about women who must learn to live out their faith despite trying circumstances, you’ll love this book.
News Flash: another great book by Jody Hedlund!!! I was excited to receive this book as I did read the first book of this series. I just broke my arm so I had all the time in the world to devour this story.
Was Arabella a runaway bride? Or was she finally stepping up and making decisions for herself? She was put in a terrible position by her father and his boss. Was there anyway she could do to save herself and her father's situation?
Arabella was reminded that she was not alone. GOD was by her side. He was her strength. He gave her the courage to do what is right. She had strong women in her life that reminded her of GOD's love for her and her well being.
Peter was trying to fulfill his dreams. He had regrets about his past. He asked for forgiveness and GOD was with him in his weak moments. He was reminded by Father Abe how GOD was there for him in good times and bad.
We all need spiritual advisors in our lives.
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” (vv. 9-10).
- Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
I loved the story. It had romance and valuable lessons thrown in. GOD is by our side at all times. We must pray to him and ask for his guidance in our lives.
The Runaway Bride, by Jody Hedlund, is an exciting tale. Arabella Lawrence is a wealthy woman, just past her bloom, who feels like she must flee her home, after the elderly man, who is her fiance, physically abuses her. In the hopes to find an appropriate man to wed, Arabella is soon on a bride ship heading to Canada!
Soon after Arabella arrives at Vancouver Island, she encounters two men who may be the possibility. One is Lieutenant Richard Drummond, who checks all the boxes of being an outstanding gentleman, and the other is Peter Kelly, the baker in town, who seems to draw out much of Arabella's high spirits. Watch as Arabella must decide which man is truly the one for her!
Arabella struggles for awhile with the thought that in this new land, she is free to give up the rules of old England and instead pursue the place where her heart and dreams lead her. It is interesting to see the transformation that occurs in Arabella and discover which finally claims her heart!
The final pages of this book will bring a great reunion for one of the main characters!
Ladies, grab your fans! The smoldering looks, and the near kisses are sure to keep you holding your breath as butterflies dance in your stomach, you may just find yourself reaching for your fan along with Arabella! I loved this story and these characters. Especially our hero Peter. He is my new favorite literary hero!
Arabella’s back story had me both sad and angry. Sad, for the hurt she must have felt at the seeming disregard her father had for her safety and angry at the man who hurt her. Of course, I realize that her story is something that happened all too often during that time. The blatant lack of regard that society, in general, had toward women is jarring to our modern sensibilities. Yes, even today, in many parts of the world women are still treated as if they can not make their own decisions and lead their own lives. While not perfect, the status women hold today in American society has vastly improved. It is easy to take for granted the blessings we have!
Along with the romance and historical details, this story tackles some tough issues. Arabella deals with physical abuse and through the eyes of our main characters, we come face-to-face with the awful injustice and racial prejudice that the natives of British Columbia endured when overtaken by the English Colonists. Our hero’s soft heart and willingness to make a difference in the lives of the native people is one more reason to love him.
I love this story, and I’m looking forward to reading the next two books in this series. This is a book you will want for your keeper shelf. To be able to pull it out and enjoy it again anytime you wish!
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.)
The Runaway Bride, second in the Bride Ships series, can be read and enjoyed even if you have not read the first book in the series.
As the story opened, it was clear that Arabella had definite views about her place in society and at what level she should marry. It was a bit hard to like Arabella at this point for me, however, the author allowed flashbacks to occur throughout the novel that spoke of some very scary past events that Arabella had indeed run from. I grew to like Arabella more and more and rejoiced as she began to view all people as important and part of God’s creation.
Pete was such a great character. I loved that he didn’t shy away from his past, but looked to God to help him to be a better man. His compassion for others, especially the natives of the area, helped firmly cement him as a man of good character. The attraction that developed between Pete and Arabella crackled with chemistry and I was once again reminded that Jody Hedlund writes pretty amazing kissing scenes!!
The Runaway Bride was a great story that focused on who people truly were and looked at the condition of their hearts rather than their position in society.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This is the second book in this series that I have read, and they can be read separately. They are both really good!
When the facts unfold as to why the wealthy Arabella fled England and embarked to the unknown wilds of British Columbia, you will cringe. I had to wonder how long she would have survived if she had stayed?
We also meet the kind hearted baker Peter Kelly and the Navy Lieutenant Drummond, whom I had a bad feeling about.
Loved the compassion showed by some to the Natives, especially the starving little girls.
Will Arabella end up with finding true love, or will she end up with wealth? Will there be justice here for all, keep reading!
I Received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
The Runaway Bride is my first experience of Jody Hedlund’s writing. Several writer friends have howled at and berated me for this gap in my knowledge. Well, no more. And what a wonderful book to begin with.
I’m a very disciplined reader. I set aside time, I always review a book I’ve enjoyed and I chide my children for turning to the back page to see what happens.
CONFESSION TIME… After reading the first chapter, I had to know who she ended up with. Had to. And yes, I peeked. I’m unrepentant. But don’t tell my children because it’s not a habit I endorse. Still, I had to know, and I really couldn’t wait until I’d actually read to to the end. This book will sweep readers away into another world.
I had forgotten all about the existence of so-called “bride ships” and the idea intrigued me. Arabella has fled London and, as we see in her back story, left behind a cruel fiancé. Transplanted to Victoria, will she fare any better with Pete the reformed bad-boy baker or the dashing Lieutenant Drummond?
I was intrigued by The Runaway Bride from chapter one to the happily ever after and will be reading Jody Hedlund again. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romances, learning about new places or walking a mile in someone’s very different shoes.

Are you looking for another great book? Check out my most anticipated reads for 2020…
The Runaway Bride is one of those books that hooked me right away. This is book 2 in Jody Hedlund's Bride Ship series and while you can read this one on its own, you may want to consider reading the first book in the series, The Reluctant Bride. Both of these books are very good. I have been waiting for this book because I wanted to read more about Arabella, who was introduced in The Reluctant Bride. I have lived in the inland Pacific Northwest all of my life yet never knew about the bride ships from England until I started this series.
Arabella is a lady who escaped the conventions of her class when she boarded the ship for a life unknown waiting in British Columbia. She only knew it had to be better than what she left behind. Once on board, she put the future on hold until that final day when she left the ship to face her new surroundings. Imagine her surprise when she and the other brides disembarked and found the shore lined with men gaping and ogling at them. This was nothing like England. Her lodgings were beneath anything she had been exposed to at home. She no longer had the comfort of her trusted servant Hayward, who cared for her since the death of her mother. It was Hayward who saw Mr. Major for what he was and firmly put Arabella on that ship so she would be free from a deadly match. She landed with both feet on the ground and though she was on that bride ship, she wasn't sure she was truly ready for marriage. Her thoughts lead her down a path full of self doubt that was carefully crafted by people who didn't have her best interests at heart. Conventions, thought processes and the false idea that she was not good at anything. All wrong.
It took just one look at her to capture the hearts of two very different men. Dashing Lieutenant Drummond, who could offer her the lifestyle she was accustomed to in England. Peter Kelly, handsome and bold, a self made man set on his goals. Both set their sights on Arabella but only won would win her hand in marriage. But in this new world, filled with possibilities, this young woman began to learn that many things were open to her that were denied back home. She began to see the things with new eyes and once granted the opportunity to become her own person, things shifted for her. It was good to see how she grew from the timid girl who shrank from notice to the woman who could make things happen.
I enjoy historical fiction, especially if it leads me to look for more beyond the story. Jody Hedlund made this story come alive. Her research, as always, is thorough and she engages her readers in part because of this. The characters are complex and believable.
I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. My opinions, however, are my own. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a twist of romance.
I am always a fan of this author. I would pick up any book she writes and read it. This book did not disappoint. I had all the emotions as I read it. At one point I was even brought to tears. We met the character Arabella in the first book of this series. Her story was a mystery to us. But no more. And what a story she has. It was great to see the character growth with her and the baker Pete through the book. They matured and learned a lot. Lieutenant Drummond was a man with a grudge. And it plays out with the characters growth. It’s nice to see a city as it’s taking off with a population growth. I have to mention these women actually did this in history. I can not imagine the emotions they went through as they boarded a boat for a new land without family with them. The author has done a great job in giving us a glimpse of what it was like for them. I was so happy to see Mercy back from Book 1. Definitely recommend this book. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All views stated here are my own.
The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund surpassed my expectations. I started reading Arabella’s story and I could not put it down. Yes, I stayed up too late and read it all in one very long sitting. From the beginning, I rooted for Pete and Arabella to get together. The chemistry between the two of them rated as steamy without being inappropriate.
Aside from the amazing romantic tension, The Runaway Bride boasts a swoon-worthy male lead, character development, and occasional well-placed humor. Pete Kelly is an imperfect man, but he’s also compassionate, devoted, and encouraging. For all his statements about not being a gentleman, he displays respect and patience with Arabella and others. He genuinely struggles with some tough issues and, like Arabella, he has lessons to learn. Watching Arabella’s transition from being a bit of a snob to finding joy and fulfillment in her work was a pleasure. Her character development was completely different than Pete’s, yet still admirable. In short, I loved this book and wish I had the time to give it a second read right now, but I’ll have to wait on that.
The Runaway Bride stands as the second installment in The Bride Ships series by Jody Hedlund. While it’s written as a stand-alone, I recommend reading the books in order as Mercy, the main character in A Reluctant Bride, plays an active role in The Runaway Bride. I’m looking forward to the next installment in this series. Five stars for The Runaway Bride!
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
"The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund is an historical fiction book. This book is the second Bride Ships book . There are 4 books in the series. The main character is Arabella Lawrence. She came to British Colombia , Canada on a Bride ship. She came from a rich family. During this time period there is a small pox epidemic. Arabella risks her safety and comfortable life to care for an abandoned Indian girl who was starving and sick. It is real touching how much she sacrificed to help this young girl She found her searching for food and sick as well. She was looking in the garbage for food. She risked her own health as well to care for this abandoned girl. The themes in the book are was rich vs poor,, Indian vs White man. Thank you to the publisher , netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book. It is well written and is so difficult to put down. The opinions are my own about the book. I will post my review on Amazon, netgalley, Goodreads, my blog, facebook and share with church staff.
Have you read any of Jody Hedlund's books yet? If you haven't do yourself a favor and do so, she has so many available and they are all fabulous . Recently she's also released a YA fantasy series and it's a not to miss as well.
The cover of this book is really stunning and I was so excited to start into it. We've all heard of mail order brides, well these are ship brides, which I found so fascinating to learn more about as I read the first book in the series as well.
I can just imagine what the ladies had to be going through that signed up to go on the ships to be a bride, it was not just the poor working class ladies either, there were ladies of means that signed up too. I can say it was probably an adventure for all of them and hopefully in a good way.
The romance is sweet and tender and two men are vying for our Arabella's hand. Now being a lady of means she is expected to marry within the same class as herself but love doesn't always, or maybe I should say hardly ever follows the rules.
The plot was a fun read and held my interest the whole way through.
It was fun to meet up with what felt like old friends, characters from the first book and be introduced to new characters as well. I wonder which will appear in the third book in the series. Learning about the smallpox outbreak was interesting as well. It took so many lives.
I don't believe it's presumptions to say this book will stay up there with my favorites for the year.

All opinions expressed are my own.
Arabella has fled from her home in England due to abuse from her betrothed. For goodness sake, he bit her and had a history of "lost" wives. She is shy, though, of men due to her awful experience. A middle to upper class background has her constantly checking herself in British Columbia because she knows what is expected of a woman of her station. Baker Peter Kelly sets his sights on Arabella as soon as he sees her. His working class background and new life in Christ are what set him apart. As much as she likes the confidence and support that Peter gives her, Arabella knows she is better suited for Navy Lieutenant Drummond who pursues her. The reader soon sees the controlling nature of Drummond, but Arabella seems to think it is natural. Arabella's story draws in the reader to keep turning the pages and find out how she can come into her own with the new life opportunity.
In addition to the love story, there is also history of the settling of British Columbia and the conflicts between the settlers and the natives.
Author Hedlund spins a fantastic story of recreating one's self in the British colonies. This is book 2 in The Bride Ships series. Thanks to Bethany House and Jody Hedlund for providing me an ARC for a review in my own words.
I can always count on Jody Hedlund for a beautifully written story filled with colorful, realistically flawed characters that come alive on the page. The Runaway Bride is no exception. Set in British Columbia in 1862, this tale is rich with the history of the British Bride Ships that carried women from Great Britain bound for marriage to the plentiful men living in Victoria. Arabella Lawrence finds herself with two very different suitors from contrasting walks of life. Lt. Drummond is a gentleman who is esteemed in society, while Peter Kelly is a baker who has built up a good business in the community. I absolutely adored Peter. His personality, confidence, and wit are so attractive and add much color to the story. I loved his compassion, courage, and the way he stood up for the underprivileged, and especially the native Americans. The relationship between Arabella and Peter was charming and fun and I enjoyed seeing it grow and develop.
Hedlund is a master at weaving uplifting messages into her stories. Themes of hope, optimism, courage, faith, and forgiveness are predominant in this tale and give it added dimension and depth. I’m always interested in the historical aspects of this author’s books, as it’s apparent that much research has gone into the writing of the stories. I would recommend this to those who enjoy historical romance. 4.5 stars
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishers/NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This book captured my attention from start to finish! I really loved the characters in the story. I enjoyed reading about Arabella and her growth as she finds courage in the New World. Her compassionate heart as she leaves behind her comforts and plunges into helping others is truly admirable. I liked Peter too, a feeling that grew as he came to Arabella’s rescue and tried to do the right thing despite the consequences. Their relationship has the perfect amount of romance and passion without being too graphic. I loved the spiritual truths of trusting God and repenting from the sins of your past to instead follow His leading, even when it is difficult to do so. The plot had enough twists and turns to keep it interesting throughout the entire story and I found it hard to put down! I have really enjoyed this series and look forward eagerly to the next book! I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Arabella Lawrence is from a wealthy family and is on the run from a physically abusive fiancee who was chosen by her family and is old enough to be her grandfather. She makes her way to escape by taking a bride ship to British Columbia.
I loved the auburn beauty Arabella because she is kind and courageous but is definitely caught in the middle of warring suitors in an area where there are few men and women are at a premium. It was interesting to see if she could evolve from her wealthy upbringing to that of a simpler lifestyle. The local baker, Pete Kelly, is handsome, extremely hardworking and very kind hearted, especially to the natives. He definitely wins your heart over, as he has completely changed his life and turned it over to God. Lt. Drummond was the one character that was definitely not likeable and constanly made Pete's life miserable as he vied for Arabella's attention. He also abused his power, even causing the death of many natives due to smallpox. Something interesting that I picked up on in the story was that the smallpox vaccine was used. The vaccine had been invented in the late 1700's, so I had no idea that it had been available for so long.
Note: This is book 2 in The Bride Ship series and can definitely be stand-alone, however you will miss out on an another enjoyable adventure in A Reluctant Bride. This novel does have a bit more sensual heat than I would expect for a Christian novel, so I would definitely classify this as an adult read.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I must admit, there’s just something about author Jody Hedlund and her stories that are mesmerizing. I find it hard to lay one down. The two Bride Ship stories I’ve read so far are very interesting. Imagine leaving family and all that you know to travel across the ocean to an unknown land in hopes of finding a suitable husband. A stranger yet. That’s just what Arabella did when feeling trapped into marrying an abusive man. When she reaches her destination she finds a naval officer eyeing her. Very controlling of her and one that always has to get his way. She also meets a very humble bread maker that takes a fancy to her also. Two very different men. Drummond is a high ranking officer brought up in a family of means. Peter is of the lower class who works hard to earn his living day in and day out.
I loved Pete and what he stood for and hated Drummond and his manipulative ways. Both vying for Arabella.
In the 1860s, it was hard to imagine how controlling and abusive the majority of men were. They looked on women as possessions, property. The women had no voice or say so in their everyday lives. It makes my blood boil just thinking about it. Besides the treatment of women in this story you also have prejudice against the Indians in this colony who have a small pox epidemic.
Read along as the story unfolds into a dramatic but engaging tale of how the world was in that time period and place. As the author notes tell in the back of the book, although fictional it is based on true history and lots of research.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through the publisher but was not required to write a review.
The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund is one of my favorite books so far this year. I love the way Arabella goes from a frightened victim to a strong, confident woman. She has a wonderful teacher in Pete the baker. I also love how her faith grew over throughout the story. I love all of the characters in this book. And the scenery is fantastic. It is a historical novel so the treatment of the native American people as hard to take. I am anxiously looking forward to the next 2 books in this series. So grab a mug of coffee and some fresh bread, then settle in for a fantastic read.
I was given a copy of this book by NetGalley.com with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.
When I started this historical romance, I wasn't sure how well the pairing of upper class Arabella with working class Peter would work. In fact, when Peter first appeared on the page, I wasn't sure what I thought of him. He's a bit brash and very sure of himself, but in just a while, he won me over with his desire to see the natives treated fairly in the midst of a smallpox outbreak - one that was brought on by the very people oppressing them. His unswerving faith in Arabella to make it on her own made him very endearing as well. Though some of Arabella's uncertainty bugged me a bit, for the most part, it rings true, as the idea of such a drastic lifestyle change would be hard to accept at first.
One thing that I always appreciate in a Hedlund novel is that while it's almost always a very romantic story, there is always an intriguing historical event taking place. In this case, it's twofold. First is the story of what would drive a wealthy woman to make a drastic decision of leaving her pampered lifestyle to marry a complete stranger, as well as the Royal Navy's treatment of the indigenous people of Victoria. Hedlund also makes sure to make note of what was true and what is fictional license in her author's note, and I always feel like I learn a bit when reading one of her novels.
I found The Runaway Bride to be a fun and interesting read. I love how characters from the previous book played a small role in this story, and I'm glad there are two more books to come in this series. I'm really looking forward to the next book, as Abe was one of my favorite side characters in this novel.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review; these are my honest thoughts and opinions.
The Runaway Bride #2 of The Bride Ships by Jody Hedlund is a wonderful book. Arabella Lawrence is one of the women from the Bride Ship who has run away from an abusive situation. When she arrives in British Columbia there are plenty of men who would like to wed her but two men stand out. One is Lieutenant Richard Drummond, a gentleman in the navy and the other is Peter Kelly, the town baker. As she comes to know each man she discovers their differences in treatment and beliefs. When making a choice will it be the right one?
A story rich in history and well researched. Ms. Hedlund writing is a joy to read. This series is full of excitement and romance. I can't wait to read more of this series.
I received this book from Jody Hedlund/Bethany House Publishers/NetGalley and all opinions are my own.
This is the second installment in The Bride Ships Series and it was so good! Easily read as a standalone; this well researched novel is about a woman, Arabella, who left London for a more promising future in British Columbia. In the 1860's ships would transport women full of hope and longing to secure a future with respectable and responsible men.
Arabella meets two men on the journey; one of whom is instantly likeable. In the midst of romantic dilemmas, there's also a smallpox outbreak to contend with.
Jody Hedlund is an excellent author and creates plots and characters that are both engaging and interesting. This series has introduced a previously unknown historical tidbit to me. It's an enjoyable read. Hedlund also includes a helpful Author's Note at the end which gives further explanation about Bride Ships and the characters. Be sure to read it as it enhances the story.

Book two in the Bride Ships series, “The Runaway Bride” manages to be even more compelling and breathtaking than its predecessor, “A Reluctant Bride.” Author Jody Hedlund has a gift for writing captivating historical romances that not only satisfy the heart and the soul, but also shed light on unique occurrences and issues that continue to remain relevant today. Whereas book one concentrated on Mercy Wilkins, a young woman from London’s slums, this sequel focuses on an upper-class gentlewoman named Arabella Lawrence, demonstrating that social class is not necessarily equivalent to contentment and morality.
One of my favorite parts of reading a series is the Russian nesting doll effect; each subsequent book pulls a minor character from the book before it and brings them to the forefront to tell their story. In this way, each novel can stand alone, but reading them chronologically offers a chance to grow alongside the characters while experiencing their world through their eyes. Arabella was introduced in the first book as a quiet and timid woman, and the reason for her behavior forms the foundation of “The Runaway Bride.”
Arriving in Victoria, British Columbia on the first bride ship, Arabella brings with her the torment and fear that sent her fleeing from England. Two men, one a respected Navy Lieutenant and the other a common baker, seek her affection, but is her heart ready to trust again? Her backstory is skillfully revealed piece by piece via flashbacks throughout the narrative, adding suspense while explaining Arabella’s thought process. Entrenched in the prejudices and models of behavior that define the social classes, the city of Victoria provides an often stark glimpse into the treatment of the rich and the poor, the upper and lower class, as well as the treatment of local natives. It is both fascinating and tragic to learn about the misconceptions many harbored, and this read is very timely given the outcome of the smallpox investigation in the final section of the book.
My favorite character was Mrs. Moresby. She appeared in book one, if memory serves, and here in “The Runaway Bride” her progressive and eccentric personality truly shines forth. She is delightful in every scene in which she appears, with a pragmatic approach to obstacles and no fear of defying convention in a society that places importance on one’s outward bearing: “Somewhere in Scripture, it says, ‘Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ I always figured if God thinks the condition of a person’s heart matters more, then I should too.” Without her guidance, Arabella’s future may have been very different. Between the godly wisdom and counsel of Mrs. Moresby and the aforementioned Mercy Wilkins, Arabella’s courage begins to blossom, and she comes to realize that “She might not be able to eradicate every prejudice around her, but she had to start somewhere to make a difference. And the best place for that was with herself… one by one she’d been cutting away the tangle of propriety so that with each thread she cut loose, she was slowly finding the freedom to be herself and not someone else’s version of who she ought to be.” This is what makes “The Runaway Bride” so memorable, because at one point or another everyone questions who they are and who they should be. The good news is that, just as Arabella eventually comes to realize, the Lord has the answers in His Word, the Bible, and He already loves us with an everlasting love, desiring that we invite Him into our hearts. Seek Him!

A beautiful historical novel…
Peter Kelly is a young man who turn from God and his parents. He left England for Vancouver Island, living his own way gambling, womanizing until he met Pastor Abe who help him to see how the life he was living was empty without God and rededicate his life to God and open a bakery.
Arabella Lawrence is a young woman who arrived on Vancouver Island on a Bride Ship hoping to find a good husband after the desastrous experience she went through in England. She was engaged to a man who disrespect her and left her emotionally
wounded.
Lieutenant Drummond is looking for a wife and he is immediately attracted by Arrabella at her arrival in Vancouver as well as Peter Kelly. Both man will try to conquer Arrabella’s heart but they are both very different and Arrabella will soon discover it and will have to make the right choice.
The natives suffered from an outbreak of smallpox and most of them flee further in the country. But Arabella find a young girl left behind and decide to help her…
I feel for Arabella and the natives, their pain, their rejection. Arabella has always lived trying to please her familly and they high standards.
Leaving England open a door for her to gain courage, wisdom but most of all the freedom to be herself and trust God. She needed to stop caring about what others
think about her but to look at God, to look at the heart instead of apparences.
I like historical novel and it was a pleasure to read this story the end was very moving… I really learn something new from this story.
The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund
What a wonderful story! Arabella came from a upper middle class family in London. Being considered a spinster, at the age of 25 and because of circumstances beyond her control. She had to get away. With the help of her beloved servant, she found herself on the Tynemouth, a brideship bound for Vancouver Island. This story was riveting! So many twist and turns it kept you anticipating each new chapter. The characters were captivating and your heart yearned for them. I could not put it down. The witty banter, history, romance, having faith and courage in God was perfectly intertwined! I have not yet read the 1st ( the reluctant bride ) in the series. I have it on my TBR list. This is definitely a stand-alone book, but I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!!
This is the second installment to The Bride Ships Series, and I had to say that after reading The Reluctant Bride, which I loved, I had high expectations about Arabella’s story, and I wasn’t dillusioned at all! They were both amazingly good and touched my heart deeply, that I truly can’t choose yet which one is my favorite! It really amazes me the way she develops her characters so deeply and complex, yet totally loveable and relatable. I always feel part of their plight and ache with their struggles, as well as enjoy their banter and sweetness.
It’s 1862 and Arabella Lawrence is fleeing from her abusive and menacing fianceé. She was born a gentlewoman, and raised by her stepmother to meet all of London society’s expectations. Having a sister who thrived in many senses: physical appeareance (in Arabella's mind), talents, marriage and the start of a family, Arabella is desperate for getting her own chance at a family. Desperate enough that she accepted the suit of her father’s boss, pressed by her father and thinking she will have no other prospect as a spinster at 25, who is much older than her, but wealthy enough to provide her a life of every confort. Later, we see her fleeing and boarding the Tynemouth Ship with destiny to British Columbia with the mission to bring brides to match the many men established in the colony. As the book develops we start to get glimpses of what really happened to Arabella that made her flee and hurt her family (which I won’t spoil), but what we see at the beggining is a beautiful woman (unknown to her) that struggles with many insecurities due to her past and upbringing. She feels she’s not enough, yet she strives to find a fine gentleman that will meet upper society’s requirements, as she’s accustomed to do. This will seem to be an obstacle for Peter, who is a hard working and compassionate baker that is taken with her as soon as he sets eyes on her. With Arabella having two men vying for her affection, she’s at odds at which is the better choice: the man that meets all her supposed external requirements o the man that makes her heart tingle and helps her see her worthiness and all that she may be missing on life? As she discover a sick and starved native indian in the bins of where she lives, her kind heart aches to help her and protect her. The only person she knows that won’t shy away from a native is Pete. Will this common ground bring them closer or will it put at risk the reputation and the convenient match she is so intent on securing?
Pete Kelly has a regretful past. He strayed from his father’s well meaning advice and fell into bad ways: women, alcohol, etc. Until he found a man, Pastor Abe, who helped him turn his life around, begging forgiveness from God and start living an honest godly life. There are two things missing in his life: his family, his father’s forgiveness, and a good woman to marry. He, as well as the rest of the men on Vancouver Island, is expecting to meet his match from the Bride Ship arriving from London. But he never expected to fall at first sight for the proper and reserved redheaded. He’s determined to win her heart, but he finds she has other expectations, and another strong competitor, Royal Navy Officer Richard Drummond, that he must fight off first. As he offers Arabella to teach her baking, something she seems to enjoy, he finds more opportunities to woo her and get to know each other. Then helping the sick native girl, Haiel-Wat, is another thing that will bring them close together, but can he make Arabella come around and let down her defenses? or will time run out before he has the chance to show her what they can have together? Is Arabella still in danger from her hurtful past and will he be able to protect her if she’s in harm’s way?
This was a beautiful and touching story! I loved that each of the main characters were not perfect, yet they had a kind heart that led them toward good and compassion. They have many obstacles to overcome, especially Arabella, in order to be free to choose what’s really best. I loved taking Arabella’s journey of self love and discovering what is worthy in life. She was blinded by her past and upbringing, but her heart is so kind that she slowly opens to the things that truly matter in life. Her plight in nursing Haiel-Wat back to health and making a difference in such a needy child was heartwrenching and heartwarming. The issue about how the natives were expelled from the Island because of the smallpox outbreak, instead of helping them, was a true issue that is painful to acknowledge. It’s unbelievable the pain and rejection many natives have and still suffer from the hands of the upper classes. In turn, it was sweet and enlightening to watch Pete and Arabella’s efforts to help them with love and mercy. And to stand firm for them, when mighty people worked to harm them… Pete was totally my hero! I just loved his lighthearted personality! After suffering so much, it amazed me at how optimistic and enthusiastic he was about what he thought was the right thing and therefore pursued. He wasn’t a man to give up, and it was his perseverance that finally tore at Arabella’s heart. His playful and teasing ways were so charming. Even though some of the things he said might sound conceited, he did it to lighten Arabella’s tightness, and it was clear he gave himself little to no importance. He was always thinking of others, especially the needy, and particularly a redheaded he was besotted with. The way he valued her and made her see what others didn’t was precious to behold. I truly loved their relationship, even if Arabella made it a bit difficult at first, I loved the whole process of Pete’s selflesness worming his way into Arabella’s heart.
This is definitely a worthy read and I vividly recommend it to all historical lovers. It’s clean, sweet and rich in historical detail, as Jody’s books usually are. A totally pageturner with a deepness that makes you want to slow down to savour every word, act and detail.
The side characters are awesome too: I especially I loved Mrs. Moresby and Blind Billy. They were peculiar characters but were great influences in both the hero and the heroine.
Can’t wait for the next story! It seems it’s Pastor Abe’s chance at happiness! Thanks Jody for another wonderful book!
I received a copy from the Publisher but wasn’t required to post a positive review. All opinions here are unbiased ant totally my own.
The Runaway Bride is the story of another single woman who arrives in British Columbia looking for a husband! Arabella Lawrence was a secondary character in The Bride Ships #1 but this book is Arabella's story and can be read as a stand alone. Arabella had been raised for London society and has difficulty changing from those attitudes even though she has run away from an abusive "rich old man" fiance! Sometimes Arabella seemed to hold promise as she made friends with baker, Pete, and discovered a flair for baking cakes and when she protected a starving girl. But she was so gullible and let herself be influenced by the wealthy Lieutenant Richard Drummond of the Royal Navy! If only she would have kept her mouth shut around the lieutenant! The Runaway Bride is an excellent book which I recommend to others! I received an advance copy of The Runaway Bride from the author and Bethany House Publishers. This is my honest opinion.
A Must Read Series!!
This is the second book of The Bride Ship Series. We met Arabella in the first book when the bride ship started out. Even though the first book was mostly about Mercy we got to hear from Arabella several times. Arabella is a lady and tries her best to act like one. The ladies get to be courted by the best gentlemen but there is someone else that is trying to court her too. Pete doesn’t have a high standing as Lieutenant Drummond does. Oh but she loved to bake what Pete was teaching her. I loved the characters, each one had depth and their personalities were so interesting. The descriptions of the land and people were wonderful.
I have enjoyed this book just like I did the first one. Getting to read about the hardships of the natives was an interesting part of the story too. I love that Pete and Arabella had a heart for them. If you like historical romance fiction at its best, read Jody Hedlund’s Bride Ship Series. I can truthfully say I never got bored.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The Runaway Bride, by Jody Hedlund, is the second book in The Bride Ships series. With a stunning combination of history, adventure, and romance, this book is an absolute pleasure to read! Captivating and truly meaningful, this novel certainly impresses with its vivid setting, compelling characters, and engrossing plot.
As a truly gifted storyteller, Ms. Hedlund’s has once again succeeded in writing a novel that is truly enjoyable and utterly entertaining. From the coastal city of Victoria to a crowded workroom of a small bread shop, to the spectacular views experienced from the seats in a wooden canoe, the settings of this novel are beautifully detailed and appealing. And it is within these settings that the characters in this book pursue their hearts' desires, reveal their true natures, seek redemption, and nurture their faith. Page after page, these characters are memorable and authentic. Their hopes, concerns, insecurities, and convictions are interesting and moving. As a reader, it was easy for me to become invested in their stories and the plot details that flowed from them. From beginning to end, I was engaged by this remarkable novel of peril, hope, uncertainty, courage, compassion, and second chances.
Rich with detail and drama, this story is well-written and edifying. The Runaway Bride is a worthy novel. I recommend it wholeheartedly to all readers. I certainly enjoyed reading it, and I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
*I was given a copy of this book from the publisher and from NetGalley. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.
This is a series I am so interested in and excited about. I love the way this author infuses bits of history into these romances. It makes the story come alive for me. This is the second book in this series and while I think it can stand alone, I would recommend reading the first book before this one just because it really sets the stage for these women that came over from England on bride ships. It's also really good. You won't regret it.
Arabella is an interesting character. Her backstory unfolds in bits as we get to know her. I loved how she gradually came into her own and learned to think and feel for herself. It was a precarious road for her but it felt real, vulnerable and human to me.
Peter Kelly is larger than life. I loved his character so much and I loved how he viewed Arabella. The alternating perspectives in this book really helped hone in on Peter's motivations and his desires.
This story had my heart fluttering. The flames of attraction were burning bright and the love came softly, at least for Arabella. For Pete it all came on rather strongly. There were so many memorable moments in this book and I really, really enjoyed it.
Content: mild peril, mild violence, physical abuse, kissing, light Christian fiction.
- I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I loved Jody Hedlund’s previous series, and while I missed the first installment in her new Bride Ships series, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything going into The Runaway Bride. In fact, I found a pleasant surprise as this was yet another historical event I was not aware of, and while Hedlund described her mixed emotions in her author’s note, this resonated with me immediately due to its similarities with the Picture Brides, bringing women to America in a similar fashion during roughly the same time period.
I rooted for Arabella as she makes the choices she does to venture out, determined to not make the same poor choices in love again, as well as negotiating her place in society.
Pete was a great, complex hero, and one I really liked. He has made mistakes in his past, but has grown to “live with integrity and honor in the present.” And I really enjoyed how his values came into play as a source of contention between him and Drummond, a rival for Arabella’s hand, to the point of him even being imprisoned for his actions.
This book is wonderful, and one I recommend to fans of inspirational historical romance.
The theme of The Runaway Bride is having the courage to do the right thing, especially when there is a personal price. In 1862 Arabella Laurence found herself on a bride ship voyaging from England to Vancouver Island because there were those in her family that lacked such courage. Readers will see that this type of courage is born of Christ and the willingness to pick up one's own cross and make personal sacrifices. While the book's description so far might sound a bit preachy, nothing could be farther from the truth. Jody Hedlund writes quite passionate love scenes without stepping outside the boundaries of Christian fiction. She develops a wide variety of characters, using their eccentricities to help both Arabella and readers to embrace valuable lessons on the virtues that grow in those who truly seek to live for the Lord, and to recognize a life of emptiness that comes from living to please people.
I am grateful to have received a copy of The Runaway Bride from Bethany House via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to provide a positive review, and received no monetary compensation.
I really love the smell of bread baking. Or the smell of a bakery as one passes by. Or the smell of a roll when it is cut open to smear butter inside. Or, well you get the picture. So, my latest book I read was The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund. At this point you're probably wondering why in the world bread smells and runaway brides have anything in common. Well, the hero of this book is a baker so he bakes bread. And every time he was baking bread (or cakes) I'm pretty sure the scent of baking bread was leaked from my kindle. Because my whole house seriously smelled like bread, and I was definitely having cravings for bread! Anyway, If the bread smells wasn't enough to make this a truly spectacular book, it also had a small pox epidemic, a lieutenant, homeless children and a runaway bride. All of that and fascinating historical details were included too! So this was definitely a wonderful story that I really enjoyed (along with the bread smells).
I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction, and baking.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I love, love, love Jody Hedlund’s books and was so excited to have the opportunity to read The Runaway Bride, the second installment from The Bride Ships series. I was not disappointed. I loved her vivid descriptions of what the characters endured on the ships. I admired Arabella’s courage and bravery throughout the story. The plot played with my emotions at times. The romance is what I always expect from Jody’s books.
I am giving The Runaway Bride a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers to jump on this adventurous journey.
I received this book from the publisher, but was not required to write a review. This review 100% my own honest opinion.
Historical romance that's still relevant today:
It took me a bit to get into this 2nd book in the Bride Ship series, however I soon found myself captivated. As a resident of Vancouver Island myself, I enjoyed exploring what life was like for the early residents. I especially appreciated how it highlighted the deplorable treatment of the First Nations people (natives). I also loved the elements of danger and suspense that were woven throughout the story.
Once again the themes of class barriers and societal expectations were explored, however this time from the opposite perspective. Arabella is an upper class lady whilst Pete is a working class baker and she is convinced she ought to marry a gentleman as that's the expected norm. Thankfully Pete is relentless in his pursuit to woo her and she learns to look beyond outward means and appearances and rather to the heart.
I liked the reminder to trust in God to work out His will in our lives; to not rely on our own devices and plans but rather to find strength in His courage.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
I loved the first book, A Reluctant Bride.
When starting a new book series from a favorite author it is easy to wonder if it will be as good as their former works, if it will be their new best, or even if it will be their all-time worse. Thankfully, I was quite pleased with The Runaway Bride, it is superbish.
Pete, goodness, Pete! I knew from the blurb that Arabella would end up with Pete, it was somewhat obvious, ending with the question, "Will she have the wisdom to make the right decision, or will seeking what's right cost both her and Peter everything." Easy enough to see that they are the couple in The Runaway Bride.
At first, I wasn't sure what to think about Pete, he's a bit insufferable, arrogant, full of himself, and yet that's all a way to cover his tender side.
At first, it felt like he only liked Arabella for her looks, it felt almost like it was only lust ... Until I read when they were together and I started to like them as a couple, which was what the author wanted as she led in the other man competing for Arabella's hand in marriage, Lieutenant Drummond, and may I say that I didn't like him even from the start?
The poor Indian got that Arabella tried to help was so sad, and sweet at the same time.
Arabella, I liked her from the start. The fact that she was a runaway bride surely came to light, the man she refused to marry was horrendous, slight spoiler but if you read this you should be warned that she has scars from him where he beat her, bit her, and hit her. So, just a warning.
Yet, Arabella is still a strong character that I enjoyed reading about, and the way she cared for those that came under her care was so sweet. I loved her and Pete's banter, jokes, and Pete's way of assuming that he would win her.
The ending was oh so sweet and even if I hadn't liked the rest of the book the last chapter was worth it, but, I had one problem and that was the fact that so many times it felt like the main characters drifted toward lust and not real love.
Running for her life and from circumstances that are very unfavourable, Arabella board the bride ship in search of a better life for herself in a new country.
Things are definitely much more different in this new land, with two different men from two different works of life vying for her affection, she's put in a place where she has to make a choice on what she wants from life and where she'd like to see herself.
When she meets a native child rummaging through trash and finds out more about the people and their plight, her heart is torn.
I love how the author brought to light the plight of the people and the smallpox epidemic. The fear, the prejudice suffered she dealt with it realistically but also with grace.
I also loved the characters Arabella and Peter, each with their own insecurities and fears but they grew through the course of the story. This was definitely an enjoyable read and would be looking forward to more in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions expressed are solely mine
Well, I almost don't know where to start with telling you how good this book is!
But I will start with the fact that I experienced a wide variety of emotions!
Suspense, heartache, sorrow, compassion, joy... and I almost swooned at the scene in the bakehouse....
whew...
I love this author's style of writing, and her development of her characters. The details are well written.
And while this book is fiction - based on history of that era, it's also cool that a few of the things in this book are actually based on true stories, as you will find out at the end, in the 'Author's notes'.
Arabella was briefly in the first book in this series A Reluctant Bride, (which was also quite amazing) - so her character is a little bit familiar already, as well as the settings and a few other characters too.
She ran away from a terrible situation, and remains haunted by it.
Peter ran away from God, and his father, thinking he knew what was better for his life.
Arabella and Peter find each other amidst difficult circumstances and different societal classes.
Their attraction to each other is soooo sparky ~ you can feel the chemistry! The romance is clean.
The supporting characters are great and diverse.
I felt compassion for the Natives who suffered in the smallpox epidemic. I also felt anger, knowing that the fear and prejudice against them ran thick.
I love how the author gently weaves in the message of faith, and makes trusting God an integral part of the story.
Jody Hedlund is a gifted writer that has the ability to take you to the location she's describing, and make you feel like you know the characters. I received an ARC of this book. I am not required to leave a review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
I highly recommend this book. It was totally worth my time to read and will go on my 'to read again' list!!
I also recommend reading the first book in this series first, as it will help to clarify things in this one.
The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund is the second book in The Bride Ships series. I was swept away by the first novel, A Reluctant Bride, as the brides traveled around the world to British Columbia. It was a beautiful and epic journey, and by the end, there was one woman’s story I was eager to read...Miss Lawrence’s.
Always prim and proper, yet so gentle and kind, it was effortless to cheer for Arabella Lawrence to find happiness, especially knowing her past held some painful secrets. So, I was overjoyed when I found out this book would tell us her story--both her new life in British Columbia and her past in England.
Although there is no sailing around the world in The Runaway Bride, there is still a beautiful journey to embark--one of freedom, courage, and the cost of righteousness.
I love it when a heroine finds herself. Arabella is already likable and perfectly proper from the beginning, but I love that she was willing to use the opportunity to start a new life to the fullest--pushing herself beyond the limits others had set for her. Although we do not live within the same confines, there’s a lesson to be learned from her struggles of doing what others demanded versus doing what her heart desired.
Pete. Oh, Pete. He is one of the most charming and over-confident heroes I’ve ever met, but he is good through and through. I love how his goals with Arabella shifted from wooing her into marriage to helping her find the woman who had been broken and trapped behind years of strict rules and neglect. Sigh.
I loved the big themes in this book: to love with abandon, to forgive the same, to stand up for yourself and for others no matter the cost, and to rely on God and His strength and courage through life’s toughest moments.
As with all of Jody’s books, I fell in love with this story immediately. She has such a way of creating the world around the characters, you can almost smell the evergreens! I highly recommend this book (as well as the first one in the series!). Any lover of Christian historical fiction should read this book. It will not disappoint--not even one page!
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own.
The Runaway Bride is the second in the Bride Ships books by Jody Hedlund. It took me a while to figure out why this book felt like I'd read it before, it was a continuation of the previous novel (reviewed here).
Arabella's father wants her to marry a man older than himself. Arabella has tried to break off the wedding with him a couple of times to her own detriment. She finally finds a way out by booking passage on a Bride Ship heading to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Before disembarking from the ship, Arabella captures the attention of a couple of men--Pete Kelly, the baker who supplied bread to the ship before it docked: and Lieutenant Drummond, a British Naval Officer assigned to the port.
Jody has built a lot of drama into the book, even flashing back to when her father's choice of a groom abused her. Lt. Drummond and Pete both have animosity toward each other in regards to the treatment of the natives who live on the island. Lt Drummond wants them removed from the island and Pete believes they are of no harm to the new immigrants coming to the island. Arabella is caught in the middle of them and really can't choose which one she wants for her groom. She is falling in love with Pete, but Lt Drummond will give her the lifestyle she's accustomed to.
This is a five star novel, with two thumbs up, and a freshly baked slice of cake to go with your coffee.
Bethany House and NetGalley.com provided the copy I read for this review and the opinions expressed here are my own.
With her new Bride Ship series Jody Hedlund has been exploring what would drive women from different walks of life to seek a new, unknown life on the Canadian frontier. Arabella Lawrence is a gentlewoman running from a dangerous situation. When she arrives on Vancouver Island, she must learn to overcome her fears and break away from the expectations of others. The journey from England to Canada is ending as Arabella’s story opens so the focus is now on life in a wilderness town. With Hedlund’s beautiful writing and strong research the town of Victoria really comes alive.
I didn’t connect with Arabella and Pete as much as I did Mercy and Joseph, but I loved how they balanced and strengthened each other. There were strong threads of faith and forgiveness woven into the story as well as some intrigue and the threat of a smallpox epidemic. I’m really looking forward to Pastor Abe’s story in the next book!
You can read The Runaway Bride as a standalone, but I would suggest reading the series in order to get the most out of the story. If you haven’t read anything by Jody Hedlund before you need to check her out ASAP!
I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
(4.5 stars) - Arabella's triangle
Arabella was introduced to us in the first book of The Bride Ships series with hints of an abused past. We learn more about her reasons for being nervous & fearful in this second book devoted to her story.
Lt Drummond and Peter the baker are both vying for her hand here, and she struggles as they both seem to be worthy men to consider, but events transpire to help her view them thru God's eyes.
This book is every bit as good as the first, and the series is my favorite series by Hedlund!
*Clean romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic
After having read the first book in this series, I have been anxious to read the second book and I'm glad I did. I have to admit that I have read mail order bride novels in the past but the bride ship concept was even more intriguing to me because it's a subject I was unfamiliar with.
It was a difficult journey the young ladies experienced not to mention the decision to embark upon such a journey. Arabella Lawrence is a young lady from a good family. seemed to have a bright future until she was forced into marrying a man she knew she couldn't have a loving relationship with so she boards a bride ship to British Columbia. It took awhile for me to warm up to Arabella, she was so conflicted about which of the two men who were interested in her which was understandable since she had managed to escape her intended in London.
As I learned more about Arabella, I felt so sorry for what she had been through and the courage she had to remove herself from a horrible situation and face an unknown future.
Peter Kelly and Richard Drummond are as different as day and night. Peter is such a fun, sweet and caring man so I adored him, Richard is more settled and mature but he just didn't have the charm Peter has. Arabella has a hard choice to make and it's very interesting what each of the gentlemen had to offer and what she would ultimately decide. This is a wonderful story with a bit of romance, a little humor but a lot of sadness for what led the ladies to leave their homes and families in hopes of a better life.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
What a match this was! Arabella is caught between the expectations and standards of her social class and being able to accept truly wonderful relationship with someone who doesn't fit. I was rooting the whole time for her eyes to be opened to the possibilities, freedom, and fulfillment in working for herself and not having to only rely on a husband for security. She has a wonderful character arc as she meets new people from all walks of life who challenge and reform her perspectives. I appreciated and admired her humble and compassionate nature, even though it made it easy for some to take advantage of her kindness.
Peter is a force to be reckoned with! Charming and confident, he sets a seemingly unattainable goal for himself when he decides that Arabella is the one for him. His pursuit of her turns into a humbling experience for him when she proves to be just as hard to catch as he anticipated. I loved the way they develop a friendship while baking together and caring for the native girl Arabella rescues. There's something about a hero who is a baker that is appealing- Peter has a strong work ethic and has made something of himself without the advantages that other men have had. He's not afraid of Drummond even though the officer holds more power in the community, and their personal war with each other has more layers than Arabella can see.
Overall this book has a wonderful balance of character development and spiritual growth, sweet romantic chemistry and tension, and just the right amount of intrigue and drama. This series just keeps getting better and I can't wait for the next book!
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
Jody Hedlund is a busy woman. In the past year, she’s launched a half dozen novels, including the first of The Bride Ships series. Now comes the second of that series, The Runaway Bride, set during the same time frame as The Reluctant Bride and featuring familiar characters from that title.
Look, any book that includes mentions of cricket is most likely going to have my vote. Because Victoria, in present day British Columbia, was a British colony the residents were mostly from Great Britain and had brought many of their customs and traditions with them. That included cricket. (Fun fact: the first international game of cricket was between Canada and the USA in 1844!)
One negative aspect of British expansion was the notion of class. In 1862, Arabella is learning – just as her friend Mercy did in The Runaway Bride – that it isn’t easy to cross social barriers. Arabella is expected to marry well and live a life of relative luxury. Those around her don’t understand why she’s insistent on learning practical skills such as baking. After all, won’t she have servants once she’s married? It’s a consideration that also holds Arabella back from following her heart.
There are two subjects in the novel that a few readers may find difficult to read about. The first is the reason why Arabella became a passenger on a bride ship, and it isn’t a pretty story. While the details aren’t explicit, there’s enough to understand what happened to her. The other is the situation regarding the First Nations people, known as “the natives.” As happened in the other locations colonized by the British, there were difficulties – to put it mildly – in the relationship between the colonizers and the colonized. The indigenous people were forcibly removed from their lands and readers see the impact the Smallpox epidemic had on their communities.
As I mentioned at the beginning, The Runaway Bride is the second title in The Bride Ships series. The remaining two novels will be released later this year. Is it necessary to read the books in order? Probably not. Would it be helpful to have read The Reluctant Bride previously? Possibly. I did read it first, and although Arabella Lawrence is a secondary character not much is given away. What is revealed mostly serves to build up a sense of mystery about her. Book three, A Bride of Convenience, comes out in June and will also feature a recognizable character. I’m looking forward to it.
Disclaimer: Although I received a copy of this book from the publisher, the words and opinions below are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved seeing Arabella go between Pete who she really liked but had to get past her social upbringing and the Lieutenant who she didn't really care for but felt made a good social match. She is torn between continuing the baking she is loving and getting told someone of her station should not do things like that. It was really eye opening as to the social standards of the day even in the new circumstances that Arabella found herself in. I liked seeing how she came on her own as the story progressed.
Another great book in the Bride Ships Series and this book will enthrall you from the very beginning until the last page. I had read of the mail order brides but did not know of the bride ships but Hedlund has done her research well on this documented time in history. You had the upper class, people of society and then the lower class, common working folks. In this bride ship there were both on board and all looking to find a husband of their own choosing. Our heroine, Arabella, who is running away from an arranged marriage to a much older man who is cruel in his actions toward her. She hopes to catch the attention of a gentlemen from the upper echelons of society as she has few traits or training to be a governess or ladies companion. She does catch the attention of a dashing Lieutenant Drummond, who could offer her the lifestyle she was accustomed to in England, but also the attention of a handsome and bold arrogant man whose intent is to leave his old life behind him and lean on the Lord to help him achieve his goals. Both have set their sights on Arabella but only one would win her as his bride. Which one will she choose?…..There are lots of ins and outs and surprises to this novel that you will love, one that will leave you waiting for the next one in this series…….I received a copy of this book from the author and I am happy to leave an honest review.
We were highly anticipating this second book in the Bride Ships series and Jody Hedlund did not disappoint!
Arabella Lawrence comes from a wealthy family, but must flee her home after facing some painful circumstances - most easily done by joining other women on a bride ship bound for a far away land. Once they reach British Columbia she is terrified to be on her own, but even more afraid of being sought by the wrong suitor. Two men, who could not be more different from each other, quickly notice her and try their best to win her favor - and this new competition to win her hand will only complicate matters.
Peter Kelly, the local baker, has worked hard to overcome his past mistakes. He longs to make his father proud, and one day he would love to settle down with a family of his own. The moment he meets Arabella he longs to win her heart. But Peter questions if he is enough, especially since she is used to wealth and comfort, and Navy Lieutenant Richard Drummond has also set his sights upon her.
Arabella befriends a young Indian girl who has been left behind to fend for herself since her village was burned down after a smallpox outbreak. Due to many differing opinions on how the Indians should be dealt with, secrecy and caution are imperative. Can Arabella break free from the expectations society has placed on her? Can she trust God to care for and lead her to make the best decisions for her present and future? Jody weaves this story together beautifully. We highly recommend it and again anticipate the next book in the series!
Thank you to Bethany House for the free review copy. All opinions are my own.
I am so glad that Hedlund decided to write a book from Arabella's POV. After reading the first book in the series, I was left with so many questions about this character, and I found her story to be intriguing, sad, and full of hope. I also like how this book seamlessly flowed from the first book, and even overlapped, which worked great for setting up the plot and helped me to remember the first book in better detail.
I also enjoyed the character of Pete and his struggles that were presented in this book. It's not often that I read a Christian fiction book that talks about the struggles of lust. I applaud the author for tackling such a hard topic honestly and realistically.
There's a lot of romance in this book, since Arabella has two men vying for her hand. And these men are as different as they come. It was interesting to see how her relationship with each of them progressed throughout the story as she was figuring out who she was and what she wants.
What a story! I loved the meetcute between Arabella and Peter. It was such a cute way for them to meet and their developing relationship throughout the book kept me guessing as to how it would all play out in the end. I really enjoyed getting to see Arabella again and learning more of her backstory after meeting her in The Reluctant Bride, and Peter was quite a character. I really liked him. The story was full of twists and I had trouble putting the book down at times because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. If you like historical Christian fiction then give this one a try.
I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
It is impossible for me to put into words how much I love this book. Jody Hedlund never writes anything less than five stars. In "The Runaway Bride," the author has found a new way to address the age old question of whether to marry for love or social class. The characters one is supposed to love, are easy to love. The characters that one should dislike, are easy to dislike. Arabella Lawrence's journey to a new life is a reminder that, although it can be helpful to leave a harmful past, it is equally important not to repeat its mistakes. And, last but not least, that you should not shut out every possibility for future happiness based on past disappointments. I highly recommend this book!!

A wonderful tale of a woman finding her way when everything is stacked against her. Arabella gets the opportunity to tell her story after arriving in BC. Bound by societal expectations and propriety, she wrestles against what she knows in her heart and what she knows in her mind. I truly enjoyed journeying with her to recognize the strong woman she is despite some deep heart hurts and fears. The addition of the smallpox outbreak added a nice element of struggle and of characters being further developed based on their response. The two men vying for Arabella’s attention added a healthy dose of romance. Reading the first book in the series is not required to enjoy this one, but it is nice to see some familiar characters again. I received a complimentary copy of this book and all opinions expressed are solely my own.
Jody Hedlund is by far my favorite historical romance writer (and she’s a Michigander too!!). The way she builds romantic tension is like no other Christian author I have read.
Arabella is trying to find herself. She thinks she knows who she should be, based on the expectations placed on her from her family, but in this world she is discovering parts of herself she didn’t know existed and things that actually make her happy.
Pete is also overcoming a past that wasn’t very respectable but he is determined to leave the past behind and move on with Arabella.
A wonderful historical romance that Jody Hedlund fans are sure to love.
A copy of this book was given to me through Netgalley.com. All opinions are my own.
Man, I love books by Jody Hedlund. It doesn't matter what time period she's writing in, I eat her stories up! I loved the setting and historical detail in this story and the whole bride ship concept continues to be a ton of fun. I can't say I connected with Pete and Arabella quite as strongly as I did with the hero and heroine in the first story but I have a feeling that's more personal preference than anything. Readers who love extra confident, flirtatious heroes will adore Pete! :)
The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund is Book #2 in her The Bride Ship Series. It could easily be read and followed as a stand alone book, but I would encourage you to pick up book one. I thought it was phenomenal. It is a wonderful Christian historical romance that will not disappoint.
Set in Vancouver in the 1860s The Runaway Bride was captivating. The story was beautifully told and within a few short pages I was under author Hedlund’s spell. I felt like I had been transported to a time and place totally new to me. Her style of writing is inviting. I was so invested in the lives of the characters that I wanted to call out to them. Their dialog and conversations sounded authentic and smooth.
This is the tale of lovely Arabella Lawrence, a genteel English woman and our Runaway Bride. Her father has arranged a marriage for her to his boss. This proves disastrous even before the wedding. Her only hope is to slip away on the Bride Ship heading to British Columbia.
Her story is so fascinating. The depth of her character is amazing. She ends up being sought after by two rivals, and it turns the story on end. Parts of the story are humorous and made me giggle while others are so heartfelt a tear would escape my eye. There are surprises, twist, and turns aplenty! I could not read fast enough to see what would happen next.
One of the things I loved most about this book was the beautiful story of faith and inspiration. Real life issues of forgiveness, compassion, second chances, social classes, trusting God, and helping others were shown. Learning about the natives and land was so interesting, also.
I highly recommend this book. It is one that has stayed with me long after reading it. A reading group would benefit by choosing this title. There is so much to discuss. I rated it a 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided but this is my honest opinion.
I truly love all Jody Hedlund books and this one, this series has been wonderfully written. With history, romance, suspense and drama all wrapped together in one story. The idea of the bride ships, what these women went through, the difficult path they chose and the ways God used them at the right time in the right place is such a great concept for a series. Love it!
Oh, Arabella, I knew you'd get a story. And what a story it is.
Like Mercy, Arabella comes from a hard life, only she's on the better side of the social class. Bring in Pete, the lower class baker who sets his sights on Arabella and refuses to back down. I could not get enough of Pete's actions and his swagger. Jody Hedlund kept him confident enough to be funny but humble enough that he never truly seemed conceited.
The feud between Pete and Drummond really pushed my buttons. I've learned I don't care for injustice, and Drummond's actions were abominable.
Arabella has a lot to learn in this new colony, and her place in it. Should she turn her back on the conventions she left behind or continue with what she knows, even though she recognizes the unfairness? Her growth throughout the novel was inspiring.
Once again, Jody Hedlund did not disappoint. Her writing style is so beautiful. I couldn't stop reading.
Arabella and Pete's relationship is smoking, and it's not the bread Pete's baking.
Arabella's soft heart, combined with Pete's ability to get out of a tight spot put these two in perfect harmony even while social class pulls them apart. Constant conflict between social class helps drive the plot and Arabella's thoughts, but it's the need to become more than what they are that helps these two characters grow.

"Character is much more important than class."
Although I have not read book 1 in this series, this book read quite well as a stand alone.
It's 1862 and a bride ship has arrived at Vancouver Island British Columbia. Aboard was Arabella Lawrence who had spirited away from England due to an arranged marriage with an older gentleman who was her father's boss who had abused her before they were even married! She hopes to find a gentleman of her class who will marry her and protect her. She is first spotted by a naval officer, Lt. Drummond and then spotted by a local baker, Pete Kelley.
Arabella had been pounded by her stepmother with the notion that she is good for nothing but marrying someone of her class and being a mother. She had no notion that she was capable of so much more. Lt. Drummond fulfills all the notions of her stepmother, but is hiding behind a facade that covers his hatred of the natives and will do anything to eliminate them from the area. His desire for Arabella is to be a petty decoration on his arm. Pete Kelly is a born-again Christian and has left his rough past behind him and cares deeply about the natives. He encourages Arabella to sprout her wings and do things she has never done before. Only Arabella can determine which man is truly a loving, caring, person and the right one for her.
I loved watching Arabella grow and her love for the native people. The encouragement that Pete gave her no matter what she wanted to attempt was sweet. Their growing feelings for one another were wonderful to watch as Arabella learned what love for another man felt like and as Pete learned to control his desires and feelings. The spiritual content enriched the entire story line as Arabella learned that character was more important than class.
I look forward to reading book 1 and those that follow in this series.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGalley. Opinions are mine alone. I was not compensated for this review.
The second book in The Bride Ship series, author Jody Hedlund takes us on a voyage with Arabella Lawrence who is surprised by what she finds when arriving in British Columbia. Her society notions are definitely put to the test when she meets Peter Kelly.
The characters in this story are colorful and will often put a smile on your face. Hedlund’s descriptions of British Columbia make me want to visit one day.
Not your typical rich girl falls for the poor guy story, will Arabella learn how to care for other people, and not worry about what is expected of her? Or will she marry rich as is expected of her? This story will keep you reading and turning pages quickly to see what happens next. If you enjoy historical fiction I highly recommend it.
Arabella Lawrence fled on the bride ship to British Columbia to escape a forced marriage. From the privileged class, she must learn to work with her hands in her new home. Men desire to marry her, but whom should she choose—a military man who may not be all he seems or a hardworking baker who couldn’t give her the life she’s used to. The story captures the time and situation well and the characters seem realistic, but the romance heats up too much for my taste even though it remains clean. Prejudice against Native Indians plays a role in this story, as does the growth of faith. This novel picks up where the first in the series left off, but stands alone as a complete tale too. I received a copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I was right! I enjoyed her The Lost Princesses series, and Jody Hedlund's latest is just as good, maybe better! I don't read a whole lot of historical fiction, but I do enjoy it when I find the right book, and this series has been showing up quite a lot on my radar lately, so I was ecstatic to have the chance to read this one! (And on a personal note, I think there might have been I reason I read this 'series' out of order!) I loved all the messages of hope, love, faith, family, healing strength, and forgiveness in this! I plan to read the first The Reluctant Bride soon, but this series can easily be read as stand-alones, so it doesn't matter, they are more companion novels with some similar characters and setting mentioned, but the story-lines are each their own.
I loved meeting the cast in this one, all of the characters were fun and interesting to read about. I think perhaps my favorite part was getting to know Arabella, and seeing her faith both grow and be tested as she learned to accepted her role, not to be owned, but to grow in her faith and to let her newfound strength help others. Likewise, I loved Peter's characters and loved seeing his character develop and strive to learn from a rocky past, while also looking toward the future in an attempt to help others, including an effort to help the local Natives gain fair treatment.
With all the emotional heart-felt moments, strong characters (that often don't think they are at the start), character growth, well written plot and story, and a nice dash of hope and healing, I loved reading this, and look forward to more soon!
The Runaway Bride by Jody Hedlund grabbed by attention from the very first page. I have not yet had the opportunity to read The Reluctant Bride (I have moved it to the top of my pile). I was glad that The Runaway Bride could be read as a standalone. I thought the story was well-written with realistic, developed characters. Arabella Lawrence has left England for a new life in British Columbia. She fled England before her wedding to Mr. Major. The match was arranged between her father and Mr. Major. The man was old enough to be Arabella’s grandfather and his other wives only lived a couple of years after they were wed. Arabella has had rigid rules drilled into her by a nasty stepmother. She arrives in British Columbia on a bride ship and hopes to make an advantageous match that suits her position. Lt. Richard Drummond is among the dignitaries greeting the ship and he is instantly taken with Arabella. Peter Kelly, the local baker, meets Arabella the same day and knows she is the woman he wants to marry. Two very different men with differing belief systems vying for Arabella’s attention. Peter Kelly is a charmer from the very beginning. I can see why Arabella was taken with him. I could feel Arabella’s mind versus heart dilemma. She knows she should marry someone of her social station, but Arabella is attracted to Pete. She also feels she can talk to him and that he likes her despite her flaws. The author showed the contrast between the two men as well as how society would perceive Arabella if she did not do as expected of her. I thought Jody Hedlund captured the time period and how it felt to arrive in a new country on a bride ship. These women had no idea what the area would be like or what type of men would be waiting for them. I liked that none of the women were forced to marry. They were allowed to take their time in finding the right life partner. The author’s vivid descriptions brought the story alive for me. I could visualize the scenery and the characters. I felt I was in the canoe with Arabella as she saw the wildlife and traversed along the water to the native’s village. Included in the story is a little girl who needs help. Smallpox has infected the natives, and many were worried it would claim those in Victoria. There are those who wished to help the natives and others who wanted to drive them away. Why Arabella fled England is revealed a little bit at a time. I do want to let readers know there is violence which will make you cringe. My favorite phrase from The Runaway Bride is “If we’re living rightly before God and pleasing Him, then that’s all that matters.” Christian values were beautifully incorporate into the story. It is an integral part of The Runaway Bride. I stayed up very late to finish this moving historical novel. I am looking forward to reading the other books in The Bride Ships series. The Runaway Bride is a touching story with a beguiling baker, fierce frays, a shocking sickness, rapid rumors, a spiteful soldier, and beautiful brides.
I have not had the privilege of reading works by this author before. However, I am very pleased to have a new author to follow! Ms. Hedlund writes a very clean historical fiction style with a wonderful view into true history. I love the amount of research that went into this book, and I also love the direction of the storyline!
I was pleased with how well this book was written, and how grammatical errors were at a minimum. This goes a long way in being able to truly enjoy a book without trying to figure out what was meant when a grammatical error is interjected. The only reason I gave a 4 star vs. a 5 star is because the author does tend to ramble a bit more than my taste. Some of the short little scenes took 4 or 5 pages for just a short encounter (because feelings and memories from every angle were deeply explored). I'm not one for that level of detail. I LOVE detail, but there can be too much. This book could likely have been a least a third shorter without losing any of its depth and value. This was true especially in the last few chapters. I discovered about half way thru the book that the first page of each chapter had all of the "meat" of the chapter, and the rest was a lot of fluff. I found myself skimming thru a great deal.
The truth is, I still deeply loved this book!!! I just waded thru the fluff, and truly valued the storyline. I will absolutely be seeking more from this author in the future. Great job writing a beautiful story, Ms. Hedlund!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book was so fun to read. I was blessed to previously read A Reluctant Bride, which was the first book in the Bride Ships series. You don’t need to read the first in order to enjoy this one, but I recommend it because you first meet Arabella and Mercy in that story. The Bride Ship series follows ladies who embark on a journey across the ocean hoping for a better life. Arabella was born into comfort, but when she is forced to make a decision that could cost her life, Arabella flees to join the bride ship. Arriving at a place so unlike anything she’s known, Arabella knows she must choose the right husband, and as quickly as possible.
Having two men vying for her attention is flattering. One seems like the obvious choice, but for some reason the other one draws her. In a land where society doesn’t seem to matter as much, can she follow her heart? Or will those old rules so drilled into her head override what she truly wants the most?
I enjoyed watching Arabella navigate the new world and learn more about herself. Being free to do things once looked down upon would be an exciting experience. She had interesting chemistry with both men, although I had a clear favorite right away. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Wow, what a romance! First, let's get this out of the way: while this is book two in the series, it absolutely can be read as a stand-alone novel. Main character Arabella appeared in A Reluctant Bride, and that novel's main character Mercy appears here. But this novel is largely set in the time that passes at the very end of A Reluctant Bride—after the Tynemouth arrives in Victoria and before Mercy and Joseph set their wedding date. While The Runaway Bride is a continuation of the story begun in A Reluctant Bride, you don't need to know about the events from that novel to understand this one.
I absolutely loved Arabella and Pete's story! Arabella did drive me a little crazy at first with her insistence that she needed to marry someone of a certain class when it was so obvious that she belonged with Pete. However, as more of her story was revealed, I could begin to understand her perspective—especially as I paused to consider what I might do in her situation. Her vacillation did go on a touch too long for me, though. But Pete? Pete I loved from the first moment he appeared on the page. Yes, he was a little impulsive and overconfident, but he was also so endearing—it wasn't hard to see why Arabella was attracted to him!
Full of lovable (and loath-able) characters, a truly swoon-worthy romance, and subplots that highlight the difficulty native people faced once the British colonized British Columbia, The Runaway Bride is a book not to be missed! Fans of romance and historical fiction will find much to love here. 4-1/2 stars.
The newest release from one of my favorite authors, Jody Hedlund explores the reasons why women from England sail to an unknown and rather dangerous land. In the second novel of the series, Arabella is a wealthy woman who seeks a fresh start. She is rather classist as she was raised to be a proper gentlewoman. As she arrives in British Colombia, she is pursued by two very drastically different men. One, a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, the exact type of gentleman she sailed to marry. The other, a charismatic baker who shows her a side of herself she never knew.
I enjoyed Peter’s carefree nature and bravery, even when it greatly inconvenienced him. Sometimes, his forwardness of tongue or even thoughts was brazen, but I appreciated how Jody wrote a flawed character but sought to truly live a life unto God.
I quickly read this book and greatly enjoyed both of the character’s growth. I have yet to read the first book, but I will soon rectify that! The next two books will release slowly over the next few months and I can’t wait for them to be available. You may read The Runaway Bride as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the first book prior in order to have a greater understanding as some of the characters do appear.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Red Review: ❤️❤️❤️❤️
*** 5 Stars: Compelling Characters, Well-Written, Interesting Storyline, Unable to Stop
The Runaway Bride is book 2 in the Bride Ships series. Although book 2, it can easily be read as a standalone book (although the characters do continue from book to book in the series). Arabella is the main female character in book 2. Arabella, a wealthy young woman who flees a seemingly impossible situation at home, arrives in British Columbia in need of a husband. Two vastly different men woo her and Arabella must first of all decide her priorities, then get past appearances to decide who SHE wants to become and THEN who she desires to spend the rest of her life with. You will cheer Arabella on in her decisions. She is an extremely likeable young woman. The book is fun to read, but also has character depth. Great book!
This second book in the Bride Ships series by Jody Hedlund works well as a stand-alone; there was a slight tie-in to the previous book, but it took me a while to notice it. This light-hearted story had deep characters, which I thought was a well-done combo.
Arabella Lawrence ran away from her wealthy family in England to join a bride ship to British Columbia, where is now trying to figure out if she wants to continue to live under society’s strange and strict standards, or be her own free woman.
Baker Pete Kelly and Lieutenant Richard Drummond both vie for her hand upon her arrival in British Columbia; it is said that the men outnumber the women ten to one in the colony.
Amidst the unique historical context, themes of kindness and justice towards native neighbors, recovering from and forgiving a past abuser, and following God’s plan instead of society’s plan are woven throughout the book. I so enjoyed the story I could hardly put it down; it’s another winner from Hedlund.

It took me a few chapters to really get into this second story in the Bride Ships series, but as the tension began to build I could hardly put it down! In the first book, the heroine was fleeing poverty in order to have a better life for herself. A lot of book one was set on the ship voyage over. This book begins as the upper class Arabella is coming off the ship and beginning her life in a new land, looking for a husband of her status. Part of the tension was learning Arabella's story, particularly what she endured before boarding the bride ship, and how that impacted her as she formed relationships in her new home. Even though Arabella's choices frustrated me at times, her character went through a beautiful transformation. As she saw her worth through God's eyes, and put her trust in Him to love and protect her, it freed her up to make choices based on truth as opposed to what the world told her was right. Even though Pete (Peter Kelly) finds himself in a variety of tempting and trying situations, he relies on his young faith in God to guide him through. The spiritual journey portrayed by both characters was encouraging and inspiring. And last, but not least, the fantastic (clean) romantic scenes did not disappoint! It was the icing on the cake! I have really enjoyed this series and look forward to the next two books that are coming soon!
The Runaway Bride is another wonderful inspirational historical romance by Jody Hedlund. It is the second book in The Bride Ships series and definitely worth reading if you love Christian historical romances.
Arabella Lawrence flees to British Columbia on a bride ship trying to escape her past mistakes and now finds herself struggling to prevent another possible mistake when two different men begin competing for her hand in marriage.
When she finds a starving young orphan girl, she does everything she can to care for and protect her and in doing so begins to overcome her fears from her past and how that will best influence her making the right decisions for her future even being honest about how she has come to love Peter Kelly.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books in this wonderful series!
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
I have been a Jody Hedlund fan since almost the beginning of her writing career and I have to say this series is fast becoming a favorite of mine! After loving A Reluctant Bride and getting to meet Arabella in that book I was more than I little excited to dive into this one! So much so that I finished it less than ten hours after starting despite having work and volunteer obligations-I literally read it every spare second I had! This is one of those books that is just a pure joy to read from start to finish and it was everything I was hoping it would be!
I really liked Arabella and it was good to finally find out what had happened in her past. While to an outsider it would seem like she lived a charmed life, the way she was controlled and the things she had done to her broke my heart. I loved watching her blossom as she finally had space to discover who she really was and actually dream about a life she could find joy in. Despite her upscale upbringing she had a tender heart and was willing to try and do things that many could, and did, consider below her station.
And Pete, gosh I loved Pete! From the moment he showed up on the page I knew he was going to be a hero to root for! His self-assured charming ways endeared him to me immediately, especially since he also had such a kind, generous, and selfless heart! His confidence as he pursued Arabella had me smiling so much as I read and while I understood the reasons she felt she couldn’t have a relationship with him I couldn’t wait for her to realize how wrong she was! The two of them together were just so perfectly sweet and natural and everything each other needed! Pete was also a man of integrity, which I loved. He never made any secret about the mistakes he had made in the past and his determination to never make them again. And he never stooped to the lieutenant’s level of underhanded ways in the battle to win Arabella’s love.
Basically this book was absolutely wonderful and I couldn’t have loved it more!
We meet Arabella in the first book in this series. There is mention of her scars and you just know that she has endured something awful. Well, in this story we not only find out what has happened in her past, but we read about her arrival in Victoria and her journey to find true love. Arabella was snuck away from her future, abusive husband onto the Bride Ship to save her life. She knows this her only chance to survive, but she wants to make sure she does not end up in a similar situation with an abusive man. She has two suitors to choose from, one a wealthy member of the military who is well respected, the other the town baker, who has aspriations to a better life. In this story we learn about the native people and their experiences with smallpox and typhus. We also learn that many of the military personnel were not very nice people and were cruel to the native people as well as the tradespeople who they felt were beneath them. Arabella wants to marry someone from her class, but love will win out. There is some physical abuse of Arabella (in England told in flashback), prisoners and natives, but it is necessary to the story and not told in a graphic nature. I enjoyed the character of Pete. He was a strong character who had found God and wanted to do what was right. He also had some swagger and confidence that attracted Arabella in the first place. He set his sights on her at first meeting, but it took Arabella longer to realized how she felt about him. Then there was Lieutenant Richard Drummond, who was a bad guy in this story. He was selfish, often lied for his own gain and tried to blackmail Arabella. I was hoping he would get his comeuppance. This was another great story of love, listening to the Lord, following your dreams and being the person you need to be in this world as well as a wonderful romance. A great addition to this series.

Wow. What a fantastic Historical Fiction read. This is the first book I have read by Jody Hedlund, but it won’t be the last!
The writing was wonderful and so captivating. This book had every aspect of a great story, from the romance, to the tough issues of physical abuse and racial prejudice, to the beautiful characters and setting. It is a winner!
And even though this book has Christian themes and ideas sprinkled throughout, it didn’t feel like a Christian book and the romance was sizzling! The chemistry between the MC’s was so fun to read.
This area of history is something that I didn’t know very much about previously, but the bride ships are so fascinating! I also have never read anything set in British Columbia during this time period before, so it made for such an intriguing read. I will most definitely be reading all the other books in this series!
*Special thanks to Bethany House Publishing for the finished copy of the book in exchange only for my honest thoughts and review!*
An excellent historical read! I enjoyed learning about the bride ships. The story covers a lot of fascinating history!
When I pick up a book like this, I generally assume that while some hard topics may be discussed, it is still fiction and I can move past it.
This story deals with a woman that is abused by a fiancé. It is described in such a way as you know that the author seemed to have done their research. The "white knight" syndrome that many survivors of abuse suffer is portrayed valiantly throughout the story.
Her desire to do what is right, without caring for herself, her happiness is something that is truly accurate in those that survived trauma often. In the end, I loved the book. I had to set it down a few times as it was bringing up some personal issues for me. Overall, well written story and history.
This is my first book by this author. I really enjoyed it. It feels very timely to read a book set during or just after a smallpox epidemic as we are going through a global pandemic. Lieutenant Drummond and baker Pete Kelly have very different views on how to handle the natives who are vulnerable to the illness. Their disagreements become even more forceful when they are both attracted to the same woman, fresh off the bride ship.
I love Pete Kelly’s character. He is humble and funny. He flirts outrageously with Arabella. He shows her that there is more to life than rules of the gentry. Arabella gets a taste of freedom and has to decide how she wants her future to be. Does she dare break free from her class? Their banter reminded me of Richard Gere and Julia Ormond in “First Knight.” It was delightful.
While I have heard of mail-order brides before, I wasn’t aware that their had been Bride Ships coming from England. It was fascinating. I’ll look forward to going back to read book one and any future books in the series. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
The Runaway Bride is a fantastic story that readers will not be able to put down. Jody Hedlund is a pro at creating wonderful characters, vivid settings, romantic story lines, and a subtle faith thread that speaks volumes. I always know when I pick up a book by Jody Hedlund, I’m going to love it!
I adored the relationship between Pete and Arabella. Throughout the story Pete just put himself out there, pushed Arabella, helped her and talked to her. Although he was kind of full of himself, it was just different. Normally I don’t like those kind of characters, but Pete…..yeah I liked him. A lot.
Arabella is a character that I connected with early on. She constantly heard her stepmother’s voice in her head, telling her she wasn’t good enough, telling her to do things in a specific way. Don’t we all have that a time or two in our lives? I know I do. But Arabella had to learn to stop listening to that voice, just like we do. She is a reminder that we need to be who God would have us to be, not what others want us to be.
This book held so much emotion. There was a point when Arabella stood up for herself that I was so proud and happy. When Arabella had a conversation about her past, I almost had tears in my eyes. It was such a great, emotional read. Don’t worry, there’s also some swoony moments. The anticipation of a first kiss was probably more than any I’ve ever read. Oh my goodness, there were several fan moments. And then when it finally happened. WOW. Later when a character makes the ultimate sacrifice, well it had my emotions all over the place.
Perhaps the part that touched my heart the most was when Pete finally realized that even Christians face trials. His problem was that he thought God didn’t care. If something happened, he assumed it was because God didn’t love him or didn’t care. Oh how wrong Pete was. Seeing his character reach this realization was such a powerful message.
The bottom line is that this book, well the series really, is one that readers are going to love. Highly recommend you check it out! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was very enjoyable and not your run of the mill historical romance. Arabella leaves England and hops on a bride ship to British Columbia to escape the marriage her father has arranged for her with a wealthy, cruel older man. When she arrives Lt Drummond of the Royal Navy pursues her but Peter, the town baker also sets his cap for her. Will she go for the status quo or learn new things that are “beneath” her but still fascinate her?
This book was very well researched and written and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good historical.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I enjoyed this second book in the Bride Ship series, although there were several times I wanted to reach out and smack Arabella. Every time she acknowledged her true feelings, but then went against them just so she could keep her status, it made me roll my eyes. She was a really good person, it was just hard for her to rise above her upbringing to become the person she really wanted to be.
Pete was a very likeable character. He worked hard, did his best to conquer his demons, and helped those who needed his help, even when it wasn't the popular thing to do. I really like how this story doesn't gloss over his past temptations and make it seem like now that he's repented, it's not a struggle any more.
Lt. Drummond was just sleazy and gave me the willies for the entire story. I will admit, I thought more was going to happen with Drummond at the end than what really happened.
Overall, this was an enjoyable story. It's part of a series, but can easily be read as a stand-alone.
The Runaway Bride, book two in the Bride Ships Series captured my heart from page one. The main character, Arabella was in the first book so I was familiar with her. I was pulled into the first novel, A Reluctant Bride as the brides traveled the world to British Columbia, Canada. I wanted prim and proper, but gentle Arabella to find love and joy since her past held some secrets. In The Runaway Bride. Jody is gifted at writing and does an outstanding job weaving faith and trusting God the main point.
Arabella’s past was terrible and continues to haunt her. She meets Peter who is from a different class, but they are attracted to each other. Carve out some time to read The Runaway Bride, I did not want the story to end and am looking forward to book three of the series.
I received a copy of the book from Bethany House Publishers in order to provide an honest review. The opinions are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Once again, Jody Hedlund captivates with her intriguing plotlines and exceptional writing. From the first chapter to the last, I anxiously devoured the story, and was delighted with the characters and with the beauty of it all. Highly recommend this book and this series!
Awww! I really like this series. Without spoiling things for anyone… there were moments I’d get so mad and then places where I was smiling. A few parts got a little steamy but not inappropriately! This series is fascinating.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
Any book by Jody Hedlund is good book and this one is no different! I had never heard about the British bride ships that sailed to Vancouver, British Columbia back in the mid 1800's so this was a great way to learn more history while enjoying a fun read. The Runaway Bride is the second book in this series and is about Arabella, a middle class lady who meets Pete, the baker, At first she feels Lieutenant Drummond would be her best choice, because he is from a higher class as well. But as time goes by she realizes they don't always see eye to eye.
The Runaway Bride has both action and romance, This is a book you won't want to miss!
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.
Eeeeep! Another Jody Hedlund Book!!! She is a FOREVER favorite and I will literally read anything she writes! A fabulous FABULOUS escape from this crazy life right now. Although it DID take me much longer than normal to finish...due to life upending...this story is rich and delicious. Like biting into a piece of rich dark chocolate that melts on your tongue.
The land...the people...the story...the romance...(Can I just say...baking bread...mmmmhmmm)...Jody Hedlund has a way of portraying the emotions and feelings in a way that touches the very core of your soul.
Pete Kelly...All the feels y'all! His compassionate heart. His sense of justice. His passion and determination. Combine that with the God-fearin' man that he is...and WOW! Where is my fan???
Arabella comes to British Columbia battered and bruised with scars deeper than the eye could see. Her self worth was shattered and she believes that all she has left is to find a "good match" among the upper-class society of this new land.
If you are in need of a GOOD read...One that speaks to your heart. Portrays beauty in a multitude of ways. And makes you weak in the knees...Grab The Runaway Bride now! (Kindle version recommended for immediate enjoyment since Amazon is delaying delivery of most orders right now. 😭)
I received a complimentary copy of The Runaway Bride from the publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
This is an entertaining Christian historical novel that highlights a unique period of history in Vancouver in the year 1862. The stories of the real women who came over on the Bride Ships must have been interesting, and I like how Jody Hedlund has represented the brides in this series. Arabella represented the “upper class” type of bride. I liked Arabella. She didn’t look down on the other women who came from a different economic status as her own, but accepted people on their own merits. Pete, although he was a charmer, was a genuinely good guy. Arabella’s attracted to him, but was understandably looking for someone from the social status she knew back home in England. The author also works into the storyline the smallpox outbreak that occurred during that time and how it affected the Indians. I’ve enjoyed this series and would recommend it to those readers who enjoy Christian Historical fiction.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Wealthy Arabella Lawrence flees to British Columbia on a bride ship still wearing the scars of past mistakes. One of the few single women in the boomtown, she immediately has suitors, but she is determined not to find herself trapped again by a poor choice.
Vying for her hand are two very different men. Lieutenant Richard Drummond is a gentleman in the Navy and is held in high esteem. Peter Kelly is the town's baker and has worked hard to build a thriving business. He and Drummond not only compete for Arabella's affections, but clash over their views of how the natives should be treated in the midst of a smallpox outbreak.
As Arabella begins to overcome her fears, she discovers someone in dire need--a starving girl abandoned by her tribe. Intent on helping the girl, Arabella leans on Peter's advice and guidance. Will she have the wisdom to make the right decision or will seeking what's right cost both her and Peter everything?
This was a book about choices. Does Arabella think she is above marrying a baker who is below her station or should she try for the Lieutenant who is a gentleman. She is already running away from an arranged marriage. There was also the issue of propriety when Pete and Arabella were alone. Christian standards were expressed. This was a good clean book and I recommend it.
I was given this book by Bethany House Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
Jody Hedlund won me over in The Runaway Bride, #2 The Bride Ships, with her hero. He is Pete Kelly, a baker who is well-liked and charismatic. He also has a keen eye out for injustice done to his fellow-man and is quick to get involved. He is kind, has compassion even on his enemies, and is really trying to live for God. Which brings up his biggest question for God: if he’s living according to God’s plan, why is his life so tough? Pete must decide if living life God’s way is worthwhile if it doesn’t always result in a life of ease or happiness.
Arabella is one very confused lady. She certainly seems to have a severe case of indecision. She brought to mind that verse in James about a double-minded person that is “blown and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:6 NLT) Just when I thought, “Now she’ll come to her senses and understand which direction to go,” she would falter and backpedal faster than a carriage whose horses are spooked. Thank goodness for Hedlund’s author’s notes. Hedlund assures us she’s aware we 21st-century readers might have difficulty understanding a 19th-century English woman’s hesitation to step outside of societal norms. By the novel’s end, Arabella develops a very strong spine and I wondered if I would be that courageous.
This is a nonlinear story, so we are fed a bit of the present story, then a memory bite of the past. Eventually, the dichotomous storyline is completed after much danger, soul-searching, and exciting adventures with a few clean romantic kisses, plus a nice ending twist.
Perhaps the players I most admired stayed in the background. Mercy taught Arabella so much by her example. Mrs. Moresby and Hayward were ladies I really wanted to meet and enjoy knowing.
One other note. Hedlund’s historical research is impeccable and a reader can learn a great deal about Victoria in the 1860s.
Notable Quotables:
“He’ll give you courage like no other can.”
”I always figured if God thinks the condition of a person’s heart matters more, then I should, too.”
”She’d been satisfied with eating crumbs in her relationships when there were feasts that awaited if she just had enough courage to partake.”
”...when we stand up against injustice, we’ll likely suffer for doing the right thing.”
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Bethany House through NetGalley. This in no way influences my opinions, which are solely my own.
This is book two in the Bride Ships series, however I feel it is a stand alone book. If you enjoy historical romance you will like this series.
Arabella has fears and a past to overcome all while trying to find her place. Should she stay with her rules and class or dare she trust her heart. Lieutenant Drummond and Peter Kelly have a past that clashes already, so when Arabella enters into the picture their differences really show. I enjoyed the history, chemistry, and story line in this book and look forward to book three.
I so enjoyed this book! Not only is there a fantastic romance but it contains much historical information that makes me want to learn more about this time in history in beautiful British Colombia.
This is the second in the Bride Ship series by Jody Hedlund but it can he read alone. Unlike the first book, which follows one of the lower class women, this book follows Arabella Lawrence, a daughter of a wealthy banker and a true lady used to servants and a life of ease. While I knew from the first book she had come on the ship with painful scars, in this book we learn the truth of those scars and the events that prompted her escape on this ship.
Unlike the last book, which primarily took place on the ship as the women ventured to British Colombia, this book follows Arabella after she arrives in her new home. As a woman in the higher classes, Arabella expects to be sought after by some of the gentleman in the community, and she is! Handsome Lieutenant Drummond, one if the top officers stationed in British Colombia takes a quick interest in Arabella. He treats her well and accompanies her to all the events in the colony.
Understandably, when the ship first arrives, Arabella feels a bit overwhelmed. This is a Bride ship after all and there will be 10 men to every 1 woman in this British colony (hence the need for ships like these). Arabella, needing a respite and courage, flees to the dining room to give herself a pep talk. Here she encounters Peter Kelly (who quite enjoys her talk) the town baker and recently reformed Christian.
While Arabella believes Peter is unsuitable for her as a suitor due to his lower class standing he soon becomes a friend and opens her mind and heart to a different way of living, one which Arabella comes to appreciate. When she encounters a native girl in need of help, Pete is who she turns to. Pete is a charismatic and blunt man who decides from his first meeting with Arabella she is the one for him! Despite their class differences, his good heart and willingness to help all around him draws Arabella in. But could she really turn away from her upbringing and live without servants and higher class comforts?
This is a fantastic novel that not only has a enjoyable romance but provides many historical details of this time in British Colombia, especially the colonists interactions with the natives and the spread of small pox. Now I want to plan a trip here to see the beauty and learn more about this wonderful location! I cannot wait for the next books in this series which will be released in the coming months.
