Description
Joshua may be a substitute teacher by day, but Lauren finds his passion for creating educational technology as fascinating as his antics in the classroom. Though she does her best to downplay the undeniable connection between them, his relentless pursuit of her heart puts her commitment to stay unattached to the test and causes her once-firm conviction to waver.
With an impossible decision looming, Lauren might very well find herself choosing between the two deepest desires of her heart . . . even if saying yes to one means letting go of the other.

Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese takes readers on the difficult and rewarding journey to international adoption complete with the pain, heartbreak, and joy that adoptive parents often experience. The author’s own background of adopting her daughter internationally adds authenticity to the story.
Lauren Bailey, a single first grade teacher, has felt a calling toward international adoption for many years. She is finally matched with a young child from China just as she meets the man that she might be destined to spend her life with. However due to Chinese adoption laws, a couple must be married for two years before adopting. With the complications in her life, how can Lauren make the difficult decision to choose between the two?
As a teacher myself, I could completely relate to the parts of storyline taking place in the school, the day-to-day activities, and the personalities of the teachers. Nicole Deese described the school environment and the nuances of the various teachers perfectly.
Along with the developing romantic relationship in Before I Called You Mine, the novel focuses on Lauren’s desire to adopt and her strained relationship with her family who are not supportive of her decision. Readers who have experienced adoption in their families will find this novel extremely poignant and authentic. If you are looking for a book with a light romantic thread that focuses on real-life decisions that are often messy and difficult, then this is the book for you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
Before I Called You Mine Reciew
I received this ARC from @netgalley Thank you for the opportunity to read this book it was incredible.
I’m going to be honest I really struggle with my spirituality. I grew up in a unique church that was my families entire life. It wasn’t a particularly positive experience, and it has made me so hesitant to explore my own spirituality. However, the love from God is undeniable in this new book by Nicole Deese.
Lauren is a first grade teacher with a huge heart. She’s constantly being set up on bad dates by her well intentioned sister but she can’t date anybody right now because she is in the process of adopting a child from China as a single woman. If she dates, she has to wait two years after being married to try and adopt again. So for now dating is off the table.
Everything is turned upside down when a new substitute teacher shows up, Joshua Avery. They have an immediate connection but Lauren feels she must constantly deny it. As her adoption journey starts to get more complicated, she struggles to understand what God has in store for her. She wonders why he sent a child and Josh at the same time, when she can’t have them both. With the help of her incredible community and her faith, Lauren becomes an incredible mother and begins to understand why she was sent what she was.
This book was romantic, spiritual, and overall so lovely. I fell in love with the characters and couldn’t put it down.
This was an easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Star book! Preorder this book now! It releases March 31, 2020.
My six word review:
Love is what creates a family
Lauren Bailey has always dreamed of being a mother and with her application to adopt a child from China as a single mother is close within reach, she meets Joshua Avery, the substitute first grade teacher who is obsessed with all things dinosaur. As the two get to know one another, she slowly begins to fall in love with him, but with her adoption application stating she is adopting as a single parent, she fears she’ll lose her one dream she’s always wanted. Will she sacrifice one dream for another?
This book is a hopeful page-turner that will leave you wanting more.
I graciously received an advance e-copy from netgalley for review. All opinions are my own.
Once I started this book I could hardly put it down, it was so good!
I loved Lauren! We all have a little of Lauren in us I think. We want to make a difference in the world and sometimes feel like we are stuck in one spot. God has a plan and we just have to trust Him and wait on His timing. Lauren was an amazing 1st Grade Teacher, her children loved her and respected her. The other teachers in the school knew how talented she was as well. The way Lauren cared for those around her is amazing and even though her family was not the kindest about her faith in God, Lauren never gave up her faith!
Joshua is simply the whole deal, from the moment we meet him we all will fall in love with him. He is the type of guy all girls dream of. He knows how to be funny and serious, has a tremendous faith in God and is compassionate. I think he should definitely be a teacher.
I loved how the story of Lauren and Josh wrapped together, at times I felt like I could hardly breath while reading. It was just such an emotional story! Adoption is so beautiful and just is written so beautifully in this book. It shows the highs and lows of the process and how hard it can be...but also how beautiful it can be as well.
Nicole is a new author to me but believe me I will be reading more of her books!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
What an absolutely amazing story! This one is both inspirational and thought provoking.
It inspires me to reach out in a ways that might look impossible and just trust.
Lauren is such a special heroine. Her heart for children, her desire to follow God. I just loved her.
I also adored Joshua. He was the perfect hero.
I loved seeing their realness, their humanness and imperfections.
I enjoyed seeing how their relationship worked (or didn't).
I just loved this entire journey that Lauren was on, the journey of international adoption.
It is easy to tell that this is a journey that is very close to the author's heart.
This book deals with some hard issues that are all to real in our lives, in addition to the challenges of international adoption.
Lauren faces family difficulties, opposition to her Christian beliefs, opposition to her adoption, and other things that are difficult to process.
Joshua is the perfect friend, he is sympathetic, caring, and an all around good guy. I couldn't help but love him from the minute I met him.
The entire story is just beautiful. The author shows how God can take those difficult things in our lives and make it all come out just beautiful, if we learn to trust.
This is one of those books that is too beautiful, it's almost hard to really put into words a review that does justice to it. I'm fairly certain it will be one of my top reads for 2020.

My response to this book is simply "wow"! This is my first Nicole Deese book, but definitely won't be my last. I learned of this book because it was recommended by an author that I know and love. And because it was about adoption, which is something I'm passionate about, I decided to check it out. I expected it to be good, but I didn't expect to be so drawn in. I found myself completely sucked in to Lauren's life. I went from laughing out loud to wiping away tears on a moment to moment basis. This was a lovely story about trying to find God's will as well as what happens when plans go horribly awry. With likable characters, witty banter, solid faith thread and great story line, this is one I'd recommend to all fans of Christian fiction. Special thanks to the publisher for an advanced ecopy of this book. I was under no obligation to write a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.
BEFORE I CALLED YOU MINE is the first novel I have read by by NICOLE DEESE and it most certainly will not be the last. What a truly delightful book, bittersweet in parts, amusing in others, and with a strong Christian message.
We are reminded that God's way is perfect and that He will lead and guide us into His perfect plan for our lives if we trust Him to do so.
Lauren Bailey is a well loved first grade teacher who feels the Lord has called her to adopt a Chinese orphan, forgoing any chance of a romantic attachment. When she meets dinosaur loving sub teacher Joshua Avery her life gets more exciting and extremely complicated.
I really love the characters and the sensitive way the author deals with the subject of adoption.
I'm not going to tell you any more about the story as I do not want to spoil things for you.
The book is beautifully written and is one that I will definitely read more than once, for pure enjoyment.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Bethany House Publishers. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
I absolutely loved this book! The author put so much of her heart into it, I could tell as I read, that she had personal experience with this issue.
Lauren Bailey has always wanted to be a mother and she is almost there, with her adoption of a child from China. The problem is that she is falling for Joshua Avery. And the adoption application was based on her being a single mom. She now has to choose and sacrifice one of her dreams.
This was a beautiful book, full of highs and lows. It is hilarious at times and heart wrenching at other times.
There are many lessons in faith and living it out with unbelievers as well as believers.
I recommend it highly.
I received a complimentary copy through Net Galley but the opinions are entirely my own.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh, my, gosh! Can you tell I was super excited that Nicole Deese was releasing a new book? I've been a fan of hers since I read the Love in Lenox series.
Did the book live up to all the anticipation? Oh, yes, let me count the ways:
MY REVIEW
First, if you don't fall in love with Joshua while you are reading this book, then you are not human.
With immense sensitivity and grace, Deese tackles the subject of motherhood, international adoption, and family with great insight and heartfelt emotion. This book is one of those you don't easily forget and will leave you changed. There are laugh-out-loud moments and heart-wrenching, tear-inducing moments which meld together in a beautiful symphony to form a story that reflects the heart of God, His calling on our lives and His unconditional, adoptive, agape love.
Be warned, you won't be able to put this one down.
I received a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy from the publisher through Netgalley. My opinions are my own.
Excuse me while I first wipe the tears from my eyes. This book just hit me in the heart, in such a good way. A few things that first drew me into this book include the fact that it is a clean, sweet, Christian romance and that is centers around adoption. My word, I just absolutely love Joshua Avery. He is hilarious, sweet, and charming. This book literally had me laughing out loud at some parts and, while I enjoy humor in books, I don't often actually laugh out loud. Usually it's more of a chuckle in my head. The chemistry between Lauren and Joshua is undeniable, in my opinion. From the start, I was rooting for them.
A few of my positive points here. I felt like this was a realistic timeline. I have said this before in some of my reviews of other books, but I have such a hard time connecting to some romance books where the characters meet and fall in love like within 2 days and are married within a month. Sometimes the writing makes it feel natural for a quick timeline, but other times it feels rushed and forced. I did not get that here. Also, there was no "there is a misunderstanding which could easily be figured out if the characters would JUST TALK!" moment. Like geez, communication people! But again, I didn't get that here. I felt like the issues keeping Joshua and Lauren apart felt real and raw. Lauren has such a passion, heart, and desire for adoption. She needs to remain unmarried to adopt based on all the documentation she signed. Even after meeting Joshua and just wanting to snatch him up for life (because who wouldn't?!), she knows she needs time to focus on her soon to be child, who is already going to have so much to work through. While it breaks both hearts, Joshua let's it happen because he supports her! Like come on, what a dude.
My only downside is lack of an epilogue because I just crave a look into the future. Whether it be to see the main character's wedding or having a baby together. When I read a good book, I just want more! So I guess even my downside is actually a compliment because it means I wanted to keep reading.
Overall, highly recommend! Especially if clean romances and Christian fiction are your jam. You will literally be sighing over this book from start to finish.
I received a free copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary and honest review. Thank you to Nicole Deese and team for allowing me to be part of the launch team for this book. It was amazing.
Oh my goodness. This book. These characters. My heart. After swiping the last page, I wanted to go back to the beginning to savor this amazing story all over again. Joshua is THE BEST kind of hero. He’s goofy and kind and patient and unassuming and stable and just so extremely selfless. And the character arc that we go through with Lauren...her self discover and struggle and honest doubts when plans don’t turn out the way she thought they would...yeah, I think we all can relate to that right there.
Ugh. I have all these feelings about this book and these characters and their journey and I can’t put them into words because nothing I say can do it or them justice except to say that I love LOVE love!!! this book.
This novel is the story of a single woman's journey toward adoption, the unexpected appearance of a potential husband in her well-orchestrated plans and the emotional turmoil that ensues.
I am not sure how to effectively articulate my feelings for this book. I loved every minute of it, cried more often than I ever have while reading a romance and reaching the end was a bittersweet moment because I just didn't want it to be over.
Reading Nicole's writing is a remarkable experience. I don't have any personal experience with international adoption, and yet I felt like the character's emotions and experiences were my emotions and experiences. From the beginning of the book, the author pulls us in with her incredible ability to tell a compelling story. Her writing is gorgeous and her character development is rich and complex. It's challenging to craft a romance novel from only the heroine's point of view and yet reading this book from just Lauren's point of view is what makes it so amazing.
Lauren is far from perfect and her flaws, doubts and fears form the foundation for a great character journey. The hero is funny and charming and a delight from the minute he walks onto the page.
For those of us who've eagerly anticipated Nicole's next book, I can confidently say Before I Called You Mine is worth the wait. I'd give ten stars if I could.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the complimentary ARC. All opinions stated here are my own.
Have you ever had the feeling or passion to do something so beyond your comfort zone, even when others around you are questioning why you’re doing it?
This is what Lauren was striving to do and yet, things didn’t seem to go as she planned.
I loved this story because I related to the characters in this book. I work in a school, and so many of the images in this book left me feeling connected. I totally understood the desire to teach and the love of reading that the main characters had. There was also, drama from family dynamics, and times of sadness, which will touch your heart. As well as, some cute quirky dialog through texts, and sweet romance, which will leave you with warm fuzzies.
The one thing I don’t have personal experience with is adoption. In this book, the main character has a strong desire to adopt a child from China. The book covers all the many regulations and paperwork which can feel overwhelming. In addition, the long waiting period for things to happen. I have watched family members and a few friends go through this process which seemed to take a long time. However, I know that each of these families would tell you how precious the time was and how blessed they are now to have that child in their lives.
The author, Nicole Deese, has put so much of her heart in this book. I knew about this book before it came out and was really looking forward to reading it.
I highly recommend you pick this book up and read it. It just might change your way of looking at things.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
With a to-die-for hero, a winsome heroine and a deep look at the dreams we foster, large and small, "Before I Called You Mine" is a treatise on hope. I loved how Deese pours her soul into a message close to her own heart. The ache of loss and uncertainty, of waiting and moments of despair are ones so universal, the reader can transpose any similar moment in their own life experience onto Lauren's journey.
This is very much overt Christian fiction and will resonate most deeply with readers for whom this is their core belief. Yet, it is never preachy; rather it meets at the intersection of faith and doubt where the loudest voice is not what seems to be constantly sought yet the small, still voice in the intervals between. Lauren's path will be familiar to so many while her struggles and human moments allow you to recall similar trajectories in your own lives: be they spiritually charged or not.
I loved the constant sense of humour even in the moments of pressure and despair. And...because this bears repeating... I love, love, loved the hero. What a gent he is. A modern knight who is at once confident and meek, patient and persistent. Deese crafts a brilliant balance and weaves a love story out of friendship, a family out of sadness.
I encourage readers to take their time with this book: for though it is a lovely romantic comedy with some absolutely wonderfully whimsical moments ( dinosaurs!), it is also a deep dive into the expectations we put on faith and prayer and the posits we make for the world to align with our timing. It ensures that we recognize that often the beauty in our best laid schedules happens in the in-betweens. The hurdles. The slivers of love that peek in the cracks and flourish fully when we surrender our own resolves.
Fantastic book!

‘God’s way is rarely easy, but it’s always better than mine.’
Lauren Bailey is committed to international adoption and has agreed to remain single, per the agency’s requirements. After all, she has had enough failed relationships. But then Joshua Avery shows up as a substitute teacher in the school she teaches at. Lauren doesn’t want to like him, but it surely seems as if God has placed him in her path. Will Lauren before to choose between the very deepest desires of her heart? Would God do that to her?
Nicole Deese once again pulls out all the stops with an emotionally charged novel that had me fighting tears more than once. What a precious and God honoring story. Recommended.
*My thanks to Bethany House Publishers for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinions in this review are my own.
The book got me feeling all the feels!!!
I was surprisingly taken away by this book completely. Before I called you mine is a beautifully written story about love, loss and the hardest decisions in life.
Lauren has made the choice to adopt from overseas and start her own little family. She has sworn off dating as she has committed to do this as a solo mother. Until she meets Joshua. Now she is faced with some of the hardest decisions she will ever have to make in her life.
I absolutely fell in love with Joshua. He is sweet and caring and pretty much any woman's dream. For me he made this book all the more special. I loved his interactions with Lauren and how selfless he was throughout the whole book.
I was a little worried the spiritual aspect was going to take over a little to much, not being very religious myself. But this was not the case at all. I feel it added a nice sweetness to this book and really enhanced the story line.
This book, as cliche as it sounds really was a roller coaster of emotions. It was full of highs and lows and really opened your eyes to maybe viewing the world in a new light. I can easily get caught up in a soppy romance but this book had the perfect balance of love, whilst still being believable.
I laughed, I cried, I could not put this down. I would love to see where this book would lead to in a second installment.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC for an honest review.
Thank you #Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book!
This book follows the life of Lauren Bailey a 1st grade teacher in her early thirties. Lauren had her trials of bad dates and relationships, but the one thing she always longed for is having a child of her own. She eventually took matters into her own hands and applied to adopt a young child from china as a single woman. Once the contract was signed, she had to stay single for two years to be able to adopt, which at the time was no problem, until a new substitute teacher arrives. I loved following Lauren navigate her life choices through her faith in god and her friends who become family. Would love to see this book turned into a movie!
This was a really great book! I’d never read anything by this author, but the reviews of her upcoming book were good enough to tempt me to read it for review.
The characters were so real! I could well understand the dysfunction in Lauren’s family. And Joshua’s family was one we’d all love to belong to! Lauren’s journey to adoption, coupled with falling in love, seemed feasible to me, a woman who was single well into my thirties! Lauren’s friend group and adoption support group seemed ideal (though of course we all know this is a work of fiction.)
I appreciated the faith element in the story as well. I will be adding this one to our church library.
Thanks to the publisher and net galley for letting me read this title in exchange for an honest review.
Before I called you Mine
Wow! This book was fantastic! I was hanging on every chapter and completely invested until the conclusion. The circumstances of this story gave me a variety of emotions. I was completely rooting for these characters and their situation! I think the author did a great job of highlighting real to life situations of discerning God’s will and knowing His plan for your life even when things are hard. The characters in this book have the absolute best chemistry. Their banter is flirty and fun and I couldn’t get enough of Joshua! I’m not going to give any spoilers, but I will say that this book will keep you hooked until the final pages. This book was well balanced in romance, faith elements, and had a unique plot that will tug at readers hearts! I absolutely would recommend it to contemporary romance fans!
Read. This. Book. It is that good. I could not put it down no matter how late it was. Every moment between Joshua and Lauren had me feeling all the feels and routing for them the entire time. Joshua was such a patient man and was always willing to do what Lauren needed. I think I have a little bit of a book crush on him.
I had a friend go through the international adoption process and this book captures it perfectly, both the highs and the lows.
Read this book. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
I received an advance copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
It will tear at your heart strings:
What an amazing book! It made me want to laugh, cry, binge read and yet wish I could suspended time as I never wanted it to end. I enjoy stories that involve children especially when as in the case of this book, they are portrayed age appropriately. I felt the author portrayed the adoption journey accurately and sympathetically and the fact that she has first hand experience was clearly evident.
Joshua is adorable and I could relate with Lauren who found herself falling for his charm and endearing qualities even though she tried her best to resist. You could really feel her dilemma and how she felt torn between her feelings for Joshua and her desire not to jeopardize her adoption application.
The overarching themes of hope, trusting in God's perfect plan and being willing to step out in faith at the Lord's prompting are ones that we can all relate to and learn from. I can't wait to read more by this talented author.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
Before I Called You Mine is a wonderful story. I laughed, cried, and pondered the heroine's dilemma the whole time I was reading. I was wondering what I would do if I was in the same situation. Lauren is a precious heroine. I loved her and wanted to be her bestie. The hero, Joshua is amazing. I was thinking that if he could jump off the pages and be a real person, he would be the guy I'd want to marry my granddaughter. Sigh, he was that sweet and considerate, and loving. Perfect hero. This is a wonderfully inspiring book. I highly recommend.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. This is my honest opinion.
4.5 stars
This was a beautiful book, a truly heartwarming story and I'm still thinking about it.
Lauren is a teacher with an enormous love for kids and that brings her to a path of International adoption. But then she runs to a complication, the fascinating substitute teacher in her school, Joshua.
Loved these two characters and the relationship they were forming. Lauren was an amazing and so well developed heroine, I could just feel her struggles as she tried to make the right decision. Joshua, well Joshua can be easily described as the most precious and perfect hero I've read about in a while. Honestly I want to marry him,
This book made me cry, it made me laugh. I felt for the characters, I cheered for them with every page. The writing was beautiful and the plot was solid with highly likeable realistic characters dealing with raw and real life struggles that will break your heart and then glue it back together.
This was my first book by this author but definitely not my last. I'm adding her books to my list.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is filled with humor, laughter and some tears. It approaches a subject that not everyone is familiar - adoption by a Single adult. Her journey is filled with faithful friends that support her and some difficult decisions. This is my first book by this author....I will be reading more!
I was provided an ebook for the launch team of this book but the comments are mine - I highly recommend this Christian Fiction for all ages.
What an amazing book! It was a very touching topic and the story has all the emotions! The characters are stellar! This is a book you won't want to miss and yes, it is that good!
I loved the Christian values and the fact the God plays an important part in this book. And I love that so much. But things are definitely not "perfect" in the lives of those in the book with some unhappy moments. Drama, a nice romance, and tender times. They are all there.
The adoption part of the book touched me and rang true, with the trials that go along with the processes. This is a must read. Purely wonderful!
I received an ebook copy from NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.
This book drew me in from the first paragraph. I loved that Lauren's first glimpse of Joshua is of him pretending to be a dinosaur with his shirt pulled over his head. That scene made me fall in love with Joshua (and the book).
I loved that both characters were unique in their personalities and their interests. This is not your cookie cutter romance. The adoption theme was well woven through the entire story and will, I think, really speak to those that have gone down that path.
Before I Called You Mine had all the feels for me and will recommend it to my friends. A great clean love story with a happy ever after ending!
Before I Called You Mine is a emotional filled story. I love it and it will always have a special place in my heart.
I will start this review by saying that I'm not religious in any way, but I respect other people's faith and in this book it was portrayed so beautifully.
The characters felt so real, like I was right there with them, in this incredible journey. Lauren is such a strong woman and her choices made me so happy. She cares so much about the others. And Joshua, oh my. He's incredible and supportive and their relationship was based on love and respect for each other. They have the connection that some romance that I read don't have.
I would happily read a sequel to this book.
4,5 ⭐
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a n advance copy to review.
Get your tissues handy, because when you read Before I Called You Mine, you are going to need them. This story was absolutely beautiful!
In this story, we meet Lauren- a teacher who had been waiting in the adoption process to adopt a child from China as a single mom. And when it seems like she's so close to that dream that she'd felt God leading her to, her world is turned around when she meets Joshua--- the sub across the hall and the perfect romance novel hero. Truly, I can't imagine anyone not falling in love with this amazing character (and his family too).
This story truly touched me to my very core. While I have absolutely zero experience with adoption... I felt this story very much like I was in Lauren's shoes. This was in large part of course to the beautiful storytelling. You could certainly tell that the author had personal experience with this topic and that shined through and really made it more genuine. She drew us in and made us think about what we might do in Lauren's shoes. Beyond that though, haven't we all faced similar scenarios. No, perhaps not adoption... but most of us have likely had the experience where the plans that we had for our lives- plans that we thought were part of God's plans- seem to fall completely apart leaving us confused and heartbroken. I am going through this type of experience right now in the aftermath of losing a baby, and perhaps that also is why I so strongly felt for Lauren's character and why I think so many will love her story too. It's a beautiful story of God's amazing plans for us...and in His perfect timing too... all wrapped up in a beautiful romance that I couldn't get enough of.
If you love Christian romance, this is one book that you'll want to add to your TBR right away. It will pull at your heartstrings, make you think...and yes, even make you laugh a little too. This as the first book I've read from this author... and wow, what an introduction! I will certainly be looking for more in the future!
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.
Loved this book! As a former foster mom and a person who actually lived in China and visited babies in orphanages, this book hit close to home. This book tackles the tough journey to adoption and the reward waiting at the end.
"Before I Called You Mine" is an emotional read that will stay with me for such a long time. Nicole has a talent for writing and creating characters that you will fall in love with and feel as if you are on this journey with them, experiencing all their emotions alongside them.
Lauren has been waiting for this call from the adoption agency for so long. However, she was not anticipating meeting someone in the meantime, someone whom she feels herself falling for, falling in love with, but it has happened with Joshua. Lauren and Joshua grew up in such vastly different families and as they each experience the other's life, their eyes are open and their hearts are becoming more intertwined. Yet, this leads to more soul searching and difficult decisions being made.
This is a book that I struggle with even trying to describe, as when I was reading it, I was really experiencing the story. The characters all became so real, their emotions so real and I felt as if I was a part of this story. I could easily picture the characters and loved how the scenes just came to life in my mind. Lauren was broken in so many ways and yet she could find healing through the various individuals in her life through teaching her students, time with her best friend, time with Joshua and his family. Christmas with the Avery family was one of my favorite parts of the book. This is a beautiful story from start to finish of relationships, love, sacrifice, and healing and one that I highly recommend!
We may be only a couple of months into the year, but I can still wholeheartedly proclaim that Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese is going to end up being one of the best books I read the entire year. This beautiful story captivated me right from the start, and shattered my heart into a million tiny pieces. I know this story is going to stick with me for quite some time, and if you only have time to read a few books this year, then I can't possibly recommend enough that this be one of them.
I think readers everywhere are going to be able to sympathize with Lauren Bailey's story. While not everyone may have felt the call to internationally adopt a child, I'm pretty sure at one point or another, we've all felt called to do something from God. Lauren's story is the perfect illustration of the honest truth that following a call from our Heavenly Father is never guaranteed to be easy, but it's worth every hardship encountered along the way. For Lauren, trusting God during one of the hardest decisions of her life is challenging, but she can't deny His continued guidance towards the decision she knows she has to make.
Before I Called You Mine is truly a literary wonder. The story is heart wrenching, the writing is beautiful, and I honestly lost track of just how many passages throughout I ended up highlighting to save for later. I loved the emphasis on how family isn't just blood relations, and Lauren's support group ends up including many amazing people who've basically become part of her family in the process. I also have to say that I don't think there's a woman out there who's going to be able to pick up this book and not fall head over heals for Joshua Avery in the process. He's truly the most amazing book hero I've ever had the pleasure of reading about, and him and Lauren are now my number one book couple of all time. I love reading about healthy relationships where the couple is completely devoted to following His master plan for their lives, and Nicole Deese is a true mastermind at writing these kind of relationships.
I don't truly remember the last time a book impacted me as much as this one did, and I truly loved it from start to finish. I loved the emphasis on heavier topics, but also the fact that there were many humorous moments included without that I believe will have even the most cynical of readers cracking a smile at. I honestly can't recommend this heartwarming story enough, and it gets a perfect five star rating from me.
Thanks so much to Bethany House and NetGalley for the opportunity to advance read this!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow. This book really tugged at my heart. Lauren's struggles--her desire to be a mother through adoption and fulfill her mission from God, her shaky relationship with her family, her instant connection with Joshua at what seems to be totally the wrong time, and her confusion about why her efforts to follow God's plan don't seem to be panning out--were so realistically written. I could really feel her heart as I read. There were such hopeful moments and such heartbreaking moments that I really wasn't sure how things were going to play out--but I love how they did play out (although I would have liked an epilogue with a scene a year or two in the future). While Lauren was dealing with heavy stuff, Joshua was such a breath of fresh air. He was just so funny and charming and the perfect male lead for this book.' This was just such an enjoyable book to read!
4.5 stars.
I read an ARC provided by the publisher via #NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Such a beautiful love story with Christian faith intertwined. A very clean, inspirational romance between two very likeable characters. You will find yourself giggling and, then getting teary eyed.
I highly recommend you read Before I Called You Mine by author Nicole Deere.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read and review this book for my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed Before I Called You Mine. I had not read a book by Nicole Deese before this but I am so glad I did. The adoption story hit close to home for me and she handled it beautifully.
The love story is really sweetly done. We don't really get much of a physical description of Lauren. We know she is blond and something about her touched Joshua when he first met her but we don't really find that out until later. They're coming together is gently done and Joshua is just so wonderful. Reminds me a lot of my husband actually. No pressure and he is there when she needs him.
The adoption story is familiar and is not. Our own adoption story happened locally and my precious daughter was a baby when we met. I didn't have months to imagine her and prepare. I had a few hours. But love was instant and forever.
I look forward to more from Nicole Deese.
I don't often read fiction that I consider to be life-changing. But I think that reading Before Called You Mine truly changed something in me. It's a powerful story and I read most of it through misty eyes!
It's been five years since Lauren Bailey made her decision to pursue single motherhood through adoption. She's committed to remain single for at least two years after she brings her child home from China. It doesn't seem to be a problem since eligible men aren't beating on her door.
But just as Lauren's dream is about to come true, Joshua Avery walks into her life. He's everything she could want in her future...but she can't have him. She has no idea what God's plan could be, and will she be strong enough to wait for Him?
Ya'll, Before I Called You Mine is totally different from anything I've read before. It had me from the very first page, all the way to the end. Adoption is such a beautiful thing, and I loved seeing it from this viewpoint.
There was no way for me to guess what was going to happen as I read this book. There were so many moments that left me feeling weepy, and sometimes downright bawling!
My favorite part of this book was the message of God's plan for each of us. We can never know what it is, but we must trust His is better than ours.
I suppose this is classified as a romance, but I think it's much more than that. It's a beautiful story of strength and trust.
I've watched a few adoption stories take place on social media over the last couple of years. We always love to see the beauty of a family brought together by adoption. But most of us will never know the pain behind their smiles.
This is worth the read just to better understand the sacrifices of families who adopt. But Lauren and Joshua's story is so special, too.
This is an amazing debut novel. I cannot wait to read more from Nicole in the future!
“There were too many variables, too many hearts at stake. Pressure built behind my eyes again. Why wasn’t there a snooze button I could press on my life? I needed more time!”
When Lauren Bailey, a single elementary school teacher in her early thirties, realizes her calling for to internationally adopt (as a single woman), she does everything she can- from saving money to joining adoption support groups... all the way to calling off romantic love indefinitely- to make that dream a reality. But when the substitute teacher across the hall, Joshua Avery, comes into her life, she begins to question her path.
This story is all about being strong and making brave choices. It’s not easy to figure out the right path, especially with so many obstacles and variables thrown right in front of you. And it’s especially difficult when you could have two right paths. We can’t ever know, in the moment, how our decisions will play out. Like Lauren, we just have to listen to our hearts and have faith.
Thank you, NetGalley, for this digital ARC of Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese. It was a beautiful story and I absolutely fell in love with the characters, especially Joshua. We all need a Joshua in our lives ❤️.
This heartwarming story comes out March 31, 2020. I highly recommend picking this one up!
Oh, my heart. This book is golden. I felt every high and low that Lauren felt in such a beautiful and bittersweet way. Her story is a great one and I'm so grateful Nicole has shared it with us. And Joshua is ALL OF THE RIGHT THINGS.
More than a romance or an adoption story, this book is an honest love letter to anyone who feels God urging them to trust Him regardless of what it looks like. I highlighted an exceptional amount of quotes, including this gem: "That maybe the very things I've been so afraid to say yes to all these years are the very things He wants me to trust Him with." Those words were so needed by this heart. I love it when Christian fiction entertains AND ministers.
Do NOT miss this one, friends. It's such a great book.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel via NetGalley courtesy of the publisher. All expressed opinions are my own.
I used to think it might be fun to be a school teacher to little kids, but when I got older, I decided that I didn't have the patience or creativity for it, and after homeschooling my kids for a week+ through this coronavirus, I know for sure it's not for me. I applaud those who can teach and who love it, just as Lauren and Joshua do.
Lauren is exactly the kind of teacher that every child dreams of having, just as she dreams of being a mother and of adopting a child from China. I loved the way this story shaped her character and allowed the reader to delve into her personal life. Of course, she's not perfect and her flaws endeared her even more to me.
Joshua, on the other hand, is quirky, hilarious, and has no qualms about being his true self. The way these two mesh into a strong friendship with inklings of chemistry stole my heart, especially as they faced massive decisions and sacrifices.
I was completely captivated by this perfect cover and the emotionally charged story within. Well done, Ms. Deese!
Content: adoption; mild romance; moderate religion
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.*
I loved this story!!! Seriously, I really loved everything about it, the characters, the wonderful storyline, the writing style, the secondary characters - everything!! I did not want this story to end. Nicole Deese is now my newest auto-buy author!
While I really liked both Lauren and Joshua, Joshua was my absolute favorite character from Before I Called You Mine. I loved his sense of humor and his heart! He was so caring and patient and giving. He was just what Lauren needed at just the right time.
I also really enjoyed the storyline. It was so different and so interesting. I didn’t want to put this story down and hated to see it end. I cannot wait to see what Nicole Deese brings us next!
“God doesn’t trick His children. He loves us, and everything He asks of us, or allows us to walk through, has a purpose.”
Oh the trials Lauren Bailey had to walk through in this lighthearted yet oh so tender novel by Nicole Deese. Lauren felt the call from God to leave the single life behind her and embrace the many obstacles of international adoption as a single parent. After meeting the adoptive family of one of her first-grade students years earlier, she knew this step was one she wanted to take, and it wasn’t too difficult a decision to make. With no real prospects for marriage or even a long-term relationship, Lauren easily traded the idea of loving a man for loving a child in need
But as the time came closer for a match, Joshua Avery walked into her life - or rather, into the classroom across the hall from hers. With his presence and newfound friendship, along with one adoption prospect falling through, Lauren began to question whether the call she heard from God was real or all in her head. Did God really want her to be a mother first before she was a wife?
Nicole Deese tackled hard questions and whirlwind emotions in Lauren’s character, a woman who grappled with the fact that her family was against her choice to become a Christian and therefore was afraid to tell them about the adoption journey she was on. I appreciated the way that the author brought reality to her characters, showing more than one side to both Lauren and Joshua alike. Her supporting characters were just as wonderful, each with their own quirks, trials, and successes.
I enjoyed the author's descriptions throughout the novel. They weren’t the typical “run of the mill” kind. And I don’t know how many times I literally laughed out loud while reading descriptions, thoughts, and interactions. I can honestly say that I am hooked on Nicole Deese’s writing style and am looking forward to reading more from her
God is ever-present throughout this novel, and the way the characters tackle ideas of Him is heartwarming. It’s obvious Lauren wants to do what is right by Him, and Joshua and his family have a strong relationship with the Creator. Yet others question His validity and at times Lauren’s faith
This is a book I will happily add to my bookcase, and one that I would recommend to anyone who loves a good contemporary Christian novel with a bit of romantic tension. I’d also recommend it to anyone thinking about adoption of any kind or even foster care.
*I received a complimentary ARC through NetGalley and Bethany House Publishers. Opinions are my own.
God places the lonely in families...Psalm 68:6
An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break. Ancient Chinese Proverb
As this was my introduction to this author, I can only say I will be watching for more incredible stories! The story begins with Lauren, a wonderful first grade teacher, the kind you would wish your child would have. At 30 something, with no romance in sight, she has decided to concentrate on the international adoption she has been working on. Enter a substitute teacher in the other first grade classroom and her organized world is turned upside down.
There were so many wonderful things about this book, you simply have to read it for yourself. I found myself laughing, wiping tears, yelling at individuals and absolutely loving the whole thing. From disappointments to meeting an unexpected role model, the author weaves this cast of characters right into your heart. Every good story deserves a fabulous ending and you won’t want to miss that thread that never breaks.
I was privileged to read an ARC through Bethany House Publishers, Baker Publishing Group and NetGalley. The impressions and comments are my own and were in no way solicited.
What a heartwarming story about international adoption and God’s timing. Before I Called You Mine will delight and entrance Christian romance readers. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable book that is at times uplifting as it is bittersweet.
Lauren longs to be a mother. She has been waiting for her international adoption application to go through for over a year. She has closed the door on dating and marriage, knowing she must remain single for her adoption options to be finalised. But just when a possible adoption match finally appears, she meets Joshua - a substitute teacher at her school, a tech whiz and son of the man who started her teaching career. He is funny, kind and she can’t help but be drawn to him. But if she follows her heart with Joshua, she will loose her chance to adopt a child who needs her.
This book it utterly beautiful. It is bittersweet. Just when one of Lauren’s greatest desires seems set to come true the other is taken from her. There is no right answer and we readers are easily drawn into Lauren’s dilemma.
Joshua is the perfect guy for this role. He is perfect for Lauren - funny, kids around, good with children, and really sweet. He is there for her, even when she has to be honest about their lack of a future. And he continues to show up for her. There are magical Christmas scenes, sweet not-dates, and family dinners.
This book will have you crying, as well as laughing. And maybe even wiping away happy tears. And for those wondering, there is a happy ending. It’s hard won, but very happy none the less.
My only complaint: the school librarian cameo. Seriously!?!?! We school librarians are stereotyped and abused in pop culture, are ignored and removed by governments and principals. As an author, please, I beg of you, please make any school librarian characters reflect the more accurate and wonderful role they play in school libraries, the colourful and fun joy they bring to the school library rather than casting them as outdated and bad at their job!!! That put me off the first part of the story. Once I got over my ire and sunk into the story, I really enjoyed the book, the characters and the heart this book has.
Before I Called You Mine is a delightful, heartwarming story about the power of your calling, the importance of family and accepting God’s timing.
The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
I wasn't prepared for how this book would effect me emotionally. It both warmed and broke my heart. I smiled and cried. My heart ached for these characters and squeezed with hope for them. It was a beautiful story and ended with goosebumps and a happy heart. I would have loved an epilogue though!
This book was beyond amazing. I’m having difficulties putting it into words. These characters touches my heart ♥️ in a way I can’t explain. Author Nicole Deese has never been one to shy away from real-life experiences and this book does the same. I love this book and it’s made it in my top 10 reads of 2020.
Oh my. Before I Called You Mine was such an emotional read. You could feel for the heroine and her struggles with wanting to adopt...and all the complications that come with that. One moment in particular (which I won't go into detail about) had me aching for her.
I loved Joshua. Talk about an understanding hero. He was there for Lauren when she needed and seemed to know what to do/say.
All in all, Before I Called You Mine was very good and I recommend it!

Nicole Deese has written a beautiful and touching story about one woman's adoption journey. Based on the author's dedication and "Author's Note" at the end of the book this book is very personal. I hope you will check it out.
When first grade teacher Lauren Bailey meets the dinosaur loving uber-creative substitute-who-is-actually-a-tech-developer Joshua Avery, she forgets for a minute that she is currently remaining single for a very good reason: to remain eligible to adopt internationally from China. This book follows her journey through many ups and downs as she navigates not only the adoption process, but learns how to trust God more deeply.
As I didn't know a ton about the specifics of adoption this book was very interesting. Adding in the many different elements that I don't find to be typical for this genre turned it into a home run. For example, Lauren's family relationships can best be described as strained; Joshua's dad was her inspiration for teaching and the fangirl parts are especially fun; the patience of Joshua is amazing - and everything is woven together in a unique, touching, and amusing way. There are some good LOL moments. It did not end how I expected and I liked it. It did not evolve as I anticipated either, but I liked that too. If you are looking for a well-written and unique topic book this will be a home run for you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.
Waiting. I think that is what a lot of us are doing right now. The situation might look different for you than for me. Maybe you're stuck inside your home right now due to the coronavirus. Maybe you're waiting for travel restrictions to be lifted to take that amazing vacation you've been planning. Maybe you are just waiting to get through college so you can go find your dream job. Whatever the waiting is for, waiting is hard. I think I've shared in a previous post that my husband and I are trying to adopt. We have filled out tons of paperwork and passed our home study. Now we are just waiting. Waiting to receive the call that a child has been found for us. Sometimes, it seems that we will forever be in this stage of waiting, but God keeps reminding me that He will give us the right child he has for us, at the right time. I love this quote from Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese because it is such a good reminder that God has a purpose for making us wait.
"Listen to me. Right now your child is sitting across the world in an orphanage, waiting for you, to. You may not know your child's name yet or what their face looks like when they laugh or cry, but God has already gone before you in this. He's already connected your heart to theirs in a way only He can. I know the wait can feel excruciating while on this side of things, but it's not in vain. There is purpose in the waiting"
So, whatever you may be waiting for, know that God does have a purpose for you and his plan is so much better than ours can ever be. And while you're waiting, if you want a good book to encourage and distract you, I highly recommend this one. :)
I loved this book, and it has probably become my new favorite book. I think the best word to describe it would be emotional. I cried all the way through it. I really felt that I was going through the adoption with Lauren. Probably because in a way I am. Some things look different for me because we are doing a domestic adoption and she was doing an international adoption, but the emotions surrounding the adoption were the same. I cried because I was sad, happy, and just emotional with Lauren. I also laughed a lot because there was always humor at just the right places. I highly recommend Before I Called You Mine for anyone who enjoys contemporary romantic fiction or books that include adoption.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
“We aren’t powerful enough to mess up God’s plan. Can we deny it? Yes. Can we delay it while we chase our own way? Absolutely. But sometimes our character needs time to catch up to our calling.”
This story had me feeling all the feels! I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster ride with Lauren, through the anticipation, excitement, and heartbreak she felt during her adoption journey. Ms. Deese did such a great job of introducing us to the characters, slowly letting us see more of their motivations and hearts, making them deeply engaging and relatable.
Joshua was such a swoon-worthy hero - seemingly a perfect match for Lauren, except for the timing of when they met, making her question God’s calling on her life. I loved that the story centered on adoption; that’s such an important topic to see portrayed realistically, especially in faith circles. It all added up to an engaging, impactful story that I finished the book in 48 hours; I just had to know what would happen! This was the first book of Nicole Deese’s I’ve read, but it definitely won’t be the last.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I've never read a book by Nicole Deese. I enjoyed this book, but I honestly didn't know that it was Christian Fiction, which I thought was a little misleading. I don't usually read Christian Fiction books., but liked the change. If I had known the genre before reading it I probably wouldn't have picked it up. Working in a library there are many people who would enjoy this and I look forward to recommending it.
The characters in the book are so likable and you fall in love with them while they are falling in love. It's the type of romance where no one does anything wrong, but their timing sucks.
For me I had a hard time putting this book down at first but as I was reading it , the farther that you get into it the more religion focused in gets and that kept distracting me while I was reading.
I think its a great book and wonderful, interesting story line but it wasn't something that I continued to think about after i finished. ,
This book was soooo good. Seriously, you do not want to miss out on this read. It needs to be on the top of your TBR pile. In fact, you can go ahead and put that book you reading now down and pick this one up. It’s that good.
I fully expect this book to hit all the awards as a finalist because the emotion in this story, the impact it has on your heart and your walk with God cannot be denied. This book had me from page one and didn’t let go. I’m talking major book hangover. There were so many scenes in here that either made me laugh, cry, or sigh.
Joshua Avery may be my favorite hero yet, which says a lot because I’ve been keeping my hero list pretty short. But this guy is so genuine and so funny that he convinced me he was a good guy before the heroine agreed with my assessment.
All in all, this book gets all the stars and deserves a place on every bookshelf known to man.
*I received an ARC copy from the publisher. My review was not required nor influenced.
This story was an emotional rollercoaster—in the best possible way. Be prepared to laugh, be prepared to cry, and be prepared to experience a whole lot of other emotions in between. But most of all, be prepared for a story that exemplifies the sacrificial nature of love and the beauty of submitting to God’s timing, even when it seems incomprehensible to us.
I’ve always found Deese’s characters to be immediately likeable, and Lauren and Josh were no exception. What’s more, Joshua Avery is a strong contender for the most memorable introduction award! His irresistible vitality is tempered by intelligence, an unassuming nature, and a well-grounded faith, which meant I only liked him more the better I got to know him.
While slightly more reserved in nature, Lauren’s anticipation was palpable from the first line of the story, and her journey will be achingly familiar to anyone who has struggled to understand God’s timing or wondered whether God was saying no to one dream and opening the door to another. Adoption is an emotionally wrought subject at the best of times, and Deese explores the entire spectrum through the pages of this story—not just Lauren’s joys and disappointments, but her motivations and desires and the way in which family and friendships have shaped her path.
Grab a few tissues and find a quiet place where you can read this uninterrupted, because you will find it difficult to pull yourself out of the story before you’ve turned the final page. And maybe even long after.
Why have I never read anything by Nicole before? I have no idea, but I have a new favorite contemporary romance author.
This book touched my heart so deeply. Starting with Nicole being a teacher (made me miss my classroom and kids), to Joshua’s fun-loving attitude.
The build up to their first kiss was spot on, the tension tangible in my heart.
And then the end…yes, I cried. I am a bit more sensitive these days but still, it was cry worthy. So, so good. The ending was perfection. And be sure to read the author’s notes at the end to give a bit more insight into the story and the meaning.
A copy of this book was given to me through Netgalley.com. All opinions are my own.
I am breathless after this journey. Normally, I am crushing on the hero and thrilled at the end of a book when the happy couple overcomes all of their obstacles. Don't get me wrong, I was happy with the ending. But, there is a more important story line here. A story about following your calling, about not running away when that calling gets hard, about the abundant love and grace of God.
Lauren is a young woman who has set her path in life and has yet to find a partner to share in that path with her. She has a strong desire to be a mother and so pursues adoption as a single woman. Her journey takes her through challenges and obstacles that are at times heart-wrenching. This journey touched my heart and brought to mind times in my own life when God's hand was evident; when the events were so perfectly orchestrated that there was no doubt in my mind that He had led me through the challenges. This is such a beautiful story of connection that has touched my heart.
An inspirational story about a single woman, Lauren, who goes through the emotional journey of the international adoption process with all its joys and heartaches. Along the way she meets Joshua, and Lauren tries to navigate how a man could fit into her adoption journey. A great book that takes you on a roller coaster of laughter and high jinks, family drama, heartbreaking disappointments, and pure joy. Nicole Deese’s writing pulls you in and has you feeling the emotions right along with the characters. Overall, a great book that I would highly recommend, especially for the lover of romance stories.
"Love isn't about instant gratification, it's about showing up for the journey and riding out all the twists and turns along the way...together."
I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
From the beginning to the end this book kept my attention and then left me wanting more. The family dynamics, loving friendship, children, and throw in a bit of romance, and you are in for a great read.
The emotions I felt, well, you want to smile with tears in your eyes, and warmth in your heart. I felt the author gave us the right characters all the way through, whether we are in the home of the mom who has adopted several children, or with the sister who is struggling with step children and her own daughter. Then the friend who stops her life to journey with her friend on a life changing trip to China.
How would you handle giving up on love for the dream of your life, what you feel God has placed on your heart, wow, this book is a roller coaster of love and friendship!
I received this book through the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
Before I Called You Mine, Nicole Deese's new release is a complex, layered, and profoundly moving story. Her writing is so well done and thoroughly engaging. I read it once, which left me amazed, so loving it that I savored it a second time. And there is so much to enjoy: laugh out loud humor, understanding anew the educational benefits of being a reader, and the genuinely thoughtful Prince of a man that is Joshua, the hero of the story. I love stories that have their basis in reality, and while Nicole Deese's latest book is not autobiographical, it is rooted in her own international adoption experience.
But this story is about so much more than how God places orphaned children in families! It is a beautiful, slowly built yet compelling love story between two incredible characters who come to understand what it is to want God's best for the other. "Love isn't about instant gratification, it's about showing up for the journey and riding out all the twists and turns all the way...together."
This book will especially appeal to those with experience or contemplating an adoption path to building a family. As an adoptive mother myself, I know it is a journey that usually comes with the labor of uncertainty, long waits, and disappointments. However, adoption is also the result of a God-given, timed just right miracle bestowed from above. Nicole's latest, can't turn the pages fast enough novel, provides an example of just this.
I am thankful to Bethany House and to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this novel, for this, my honest review.
*Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc of this book for review, all opinions are my own*
I loved this book, I am completely in love with it.
This was a book that I started reading without knowing almost anything about the story and I really liked it because I could fall in love with the characters and with the story itself, I was reading.
This is a love story but not just love between two people but the love of all kinds, love between brothers, family, mother and children, friends, couple. For me, this book is about love.
But I admit that the reason for being so completely in love with this book is because I identify too much with the themes brought up, like teaching children (mainly by reading), because I am a teacher, adoption (because I really want to adopt in the future), friendship, family love.
The themes of this book are many and all treated with great sensitivity and tact.
It is a book with a Christian undertone but nothing that has bothered me and that I think makes the story less incredible.
As I have nothing bad to say and I don't want to say too much because I really think this is a book you should read knowing the minimum about it I end here telling everyone to read this book if you want to read a lake that warms the heart and makes you happy after reading.
THE BOOK IS OUT TOMORROW GO GET YOUR HAND ON IT!!!!
"But the two of us simply remained where we were, allowing the world to pass us by. No longer were we the ones barreling through the masses looking for the world to make space for us. We'd found it. Right here, beneath the branches of a Christmas tree."
Nicole Deese has created a masterpiece where hopes and dreams dance intimately with disappointments and faith. Told in Lauren's sweet, innocent, and tender first person voice, this beautiful story of international adoption explores the obstacles and rewards in adoption but also asks what the substance our faith is made of when unforseen circumstances roll our way. The author's writing is fluid and melodious, the dialogue is incredibly clever and witty, and the characters are oh-so-amazing.
Lauren and Joshua are opposites in many ways but their friendship is enviable, their flirting over text super sweet and cute. I'm sure I swooned along with Lauren when he first approached her at the school. Joshua is everything Lauren has ever wanted (he's definitely swoon-worthy with his intelligence, fun-loving personality, love of all things dinosaur, unwavering commitment to Lauren, and rock-solid faith) but he stands as a distracting obstacle in Lauren's determination to adopt as a single woman. I loved Gail, Lauren's friend and spiritual mother, who helped Lauren during her adoption journey as well as her faith journey.
This is a heart-tugging contemporary romance that will impact how you view the world. Be prepared with a box of tissues; Lauren's journey will bring a lot of tears but it will be unforgettable. I received a copy of the book from Bethany House Publishers and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Thank you to Bethany House for the free review copy. All opinions are my own.
I loved this book. It tackled adoption, friendship, romance, and following God's will with such authenticity. Deese made this book feel like real life, and with the topics it covered, it worked perfectly. I felt the conflict along with the characters, and I just had to know what Lauren was going to decide to do.
I loved Joshua's character. He was so fun to read about, especially the turkey and T-rex scenes. I also admired Lauren's character for her strong faith and really showing what it looks like to rely on God and the community around her for help with her decisions. The friendship that develops between these characters was also genuine. I so appreciated how the author handled the tough decision between them.
Romance; clean, contemporary; Christian faith elements
Lauren and Joshua's love story is complicated, and heart wrenching at times. The attraction and moments that Lauren skirts around between Joshua and herself were well-drawn, and added to the story line well. The complications of their relationship, mainly due to Lauren's adoption commitment, are heart wrenching as Lauren realizes how much she is attracted to Joshua, and finds out the kind of man he truly is at heart. Well-drawn side characters, including Lauren's teaching friend and her husband, some family and other characters along with their romance made for a compelling, inspirational, compelling romantic read.
This was a gorgeous, inspirational and life well-drawn novel, you truly feel in the moment.
From the striking cover to the intriguing premise and on to the realistic, endearing characters, Before I Called You Mine captivated me from the start and left me struggling to put my feelings into words. Nicole Deese has written a beautiful, poignant, and tender story that had me laughing, fighting tears, and feeling all the feels.
I had an instant connection with the two main characters, Lauren and Joshua. Their camaraderie and banter were charming and such fun. Lauren was easy to like, competent, and I enjoyed getting to know her. Joshua is a dream hero—compassionate, intelligent, and comfortable in his own skin. A great sense of humor and fun added to his charm.
Deese’s signature sense of humor shines through in her writing and makes this book a treat to read. Sentences like the following had me chuckling out loud.
“If a pause could be considered judgy, this one had pounded the gavel and called the courtroom to attention.”
Themes of faith in God’s timing, commitment, and the power of love are beautifully woven into the story and add depth and inspiration.
“Love isn’t about instant gratification, it’s about showing up for the journey and riding out all the twists and turns along the way . . . together.”
I had been anxiously awaiting this story for quite a while, and it was definitely worth the wait. It’s sure to be on my list of top books for the year and is bound for my keeper shelf. Do yourself a favor and read it!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Before I Called You Mine is a delightful read, sometimes difficult, always honest. Definitely to be read and re-read again!
THIS. BOOK. My friends, your heart will not be the same (in the best way) once you read this. So, go do that NOW.
As for my thoughts...
Where to begin? Well, first off I have read several of Nicole's books and have fallen in love with her writing style so I knew I was going to like that aspect. But it was this story, told with so much heart, that gripped me the most.
As a woman in my early thirties (and who only recently got married) I connected with the protagonist, Lauren, in a very real way. I'd been in those situations of people asking me "when are you going to get married" (as if it was my fault I was not hitched yet) and I knew what it was like to have that type of pressure - though thankfully it was not from my family.
Anyway, that sets me up for a special connection to this book and Deese's story telling did the rest. She perfectly aligns an "impossible decision" between Lauren and two things she wants. She makes you wonder HOW in the world will this work out? And then she delivers in a satisfying way that not only resolves in the way you'd want it to but also makes you consider the bigger picture here.
I loved the character - Joshua and his steady nature, Lauren and her talents and faults, Jenna and her unwavering support. ALL of it meshed so well. And then the end...no spoilers here but I cried (very happy tears). I could tell that this book came from the heart of a woman who had gone through something similar and that affected me more than I would have guessed.
If you haven't gotten it by now...I highly recommend this book. It takes you on a roller coaster but not the one you'd expect and not in an unpleasant way. It tugs at your heart strings and reminds you that He has things in control, especially when we do not.
Go read this book, friends. You're gonna love it!
My Rating: 5*

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was under no obligation to post a review and do so of my own free will.
I loved Joshua Avery! I loved his determination, how good he is with kids, his relationship with his family, and we'll everything.
I also loved all of the text conversations in this book! It was so authentic and I really appreciate that in books.
I loved Lauren's heart for her students and her heart for adoption. My heart broke with her more than once in this book. I too am a childless teacher and I feel so many of the same feelings as her only I am married.
I did not relate with Lauren's classroom much since her school is a lot calmer than the one where I work (big city urban low income public school) but I did love that no matter the school children respond to love, attention, and CANDY.
There is a lot of waiting and heartbreak in adoption and I really appreciate Deese putting her heart out there in this book. It was a beautiful love story in so many ways.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. This is my honest review.
Was there ever a better book boyfriend than Joshua Avery? I'm having trouble thinking of any others at this very moment! I know this story was prominently about Lauren (and she is a hero too) but Joshua? Wow. I loved his steady goodness and his optimism. And the way he set Lauren up to support and love her? He was really, truly amazing.
I loved how much emotion this story held. My favorite kind of stories are the ones that make me feel wrapped up and immersed in the lives and feelings of the characters. Before I Made You Mine did this expertly. This was a fantastic journey of love of all kinds. Familial love, romantic love, parental love and love for God. It's no wonder why author Nicole Deese is one of my favorites. 💙

A new to me author that did not disappoint! I was drawn to the cover and delighted with the contents. Before I Called You Mine is an inspiring look at what happens when we surrender our will to God’s best plans. I loved Lauren’s walk of faith and how she wrestled through her heart’s desires. I appreciated the candid, honest conversations she had with friends as well as in her prayers during those moments of wrestling. Joshua added an element of humor and joy that pervaded throughout the storyline. The supporting characters are just as important to supporting the message that family and community are critical to whatever choices we make. I was challenged, inspired, and blessed by this story.
I received a complimentary of this book and all opinions expressed are my own.
This was the first book that I have ever read by this author and it will not be the last. I did not want to put this book down. I learned a lot about adoption and the struggles one goes through before and after an adoption. I would never have chosen to ever be a single parent and know that would be a hard choice to make. This is a very inspirational story. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
Never having read any books by Nicole Deese, I was not sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by Before I Called You Mine. What a wonderful glimpse into a young woman's journey to motherhood. I can't wait to share the book with my daughter-in-law who adopted internationally. Deese does a fantastic job portraying the emotions and reactions of Lauren as she deals with family and friend relationships and with adoption requirements and setbacks. Would she be able to follow through on her decisions or would blossoming friendship with a fascinating substitute teacher thwart her plans? The glimpses into the life of a teacher of young children added a lot of interest to the story as well. I will definitely be reading more of Ms. Deese's work. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher, and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
Nicole Deese is a new-to-me author, and after reading this I need to go read ALL of her books. I picked this book up on a whim, and I will admit it took a little while to grow on me, but about halfway through the book I couldn’t even consider putting it down.
I usually don’t prefer first person narration, but it was interesting to read the story from only one character’s point of view. I mostly read books with dual narration between the hero and heroine, but this book allowed me to really get involved in the mind of just one character (Lauren) and connect with her fully. I physically felt Lauren’s pain and struggle, and this is the first book that’s made me cry happy tears in awhile.
I loved the relationship development between Lauren and Joshua. Joshua is perfect in a way that makes him real instead of ideal, which is refreshing in a romance. The text message exchanges are a real highlight of the book; I’ve never seen emojis in a published novel before but they really added to the story, making you relate more to the characters.
I highly encourage you to pick up a copy! You won’t regret it, and your faith will be strengthened in new ways.

Beautiful, Breathtaking, Hopfull and kind Before I called you Mine, a story that has many beautiful moments and messages that will stay with you for a long time.
Before I called you mine, the story of Lauren a young woman trying to fulfill her heart and dreams even if that meant going against her family and any rule ever written.. single, alone but full of hope and dreams to become a mother.
Lauren is a very strong heroine even if at times she has so many doubts and insecurities making her more careful to whom she gives her heart and secrets. she is a woman of faith and in faith is the only way she usually finds calmness and hope. until she meets someone who will make her feel more alive and confident about her life, her decisions, and her path.
Joshua is the perfect hero, he is kind, funny with so much love to give and spread around, he is ready to spend more time with Lauren and find more about her and her projects, he is fascinated with her, such a beautiful soul full of faith and hope.
Before I Called You Mine what a beautiful story, I really enjoy it so much because it has many elements that I really love, the amazing faith and love Lauren has for God, the kindness she always shows towards others and the huge love she carries in her heart to share with the less fortunate, her story really hit close to home, I see myself a lot in her.
The relationship, the friendship, the love between Lauren and Joshua was very beautiful, they took their time to meet and get to know more about each other, the patient, the time they took to embrace what they were feeling and what they were going through was something that made their love even more brilliant and full. I'm so used to read books that take very little time to fall in love and get to meet one another but this is not the case in Before I called You Mine, the slow burn is there, the intensity and the pull the only thing was missing was the timing but sooner or later life will give them a second chance to finally be together.
The secondary characters were great, they gave so much to the story, Laurens's mother and sister, her best friend Jenna, Joshuas Parents were amazing!! all of them gave so much to the main characters and the story making this book so powerful and at the same time so emotional..
This story made me feel all the feels, it was emotional, romantic, and with a lot of kindness and faith something we need to read and share more often.
Thank you, Nicole, for sharing part of your story, you give me hope and faith that maybe one day God will grant me the opportunity to give someone a family, a home and all my love to give and share..
This book was everything. Brace yourselves because this will probably be a long rambling gushy review and I make no apologies about that!
I finally read my first Nicole Deese book a little over a year ago and fell in love. I promptly got my hands on all of her other books and basically binge read them loving each and every one. But this one tops them all I think, her best work yet! The author’s heart shined through every page and gifted us such an authentically real story that captured my heart from start to finish! I could feel every emotion, every battle to make the right choice, every hard moment, and every happy one. It was all so real and several times I had to set the book down just to catch my breath because I was feeling everything with the characters.
I understood Lauren and her motivations so well and I was right there with her as she wrestled with the hard decisions, not knowing what was good and what was best. I loved her heart for children, a heart that I share, and the selfless way she gave of herself day in and day out to make a difference in the lives of children. Her courage to take the hard steps God was calling her to was inspiring and I loved how she trusted Him.
And now, Joshua Avery. It’s a miracle I made it this far without mentioning him because let’s be honest he is one of the most amazing heroes I’ve ever met in the fiction world. I may or may not have contemplated figuring out a way to make him a real person so I could have him all to myself-lol! But I will have to content myself with just reading about him in the fictional world. From the moment he showed up on the page doing a dinosaur impression for his students I think I fell in love and then he just kept being amazing over and over again! From the way he was with kids, to the gentle way he befriended Lauren never pushing beyond the boundaries she set but always being there, to his interactions with his family, to his adorable obsession with dinosaurs. It all came together in an endearingly wonderful hero and he is definitely book boyfriend material! His name was even perfect and completely matched his personality!
I loved the easy way Joshua and Lauren connected. From their very first meeting you could see the spark and their friendship that blossomed to more was just perfectly sweet!
I also really liked the spotlight on adoption in this book, especially knowing it came from the author’s own experience. Every part of the journey was authentically written from the hard to the good to the in between!
Basically this book was an impeccable work of art that I won’t soon forget and can confidently recommend to everyone! It’s going to be on my favorites list and you need to get yourself a copy so that it can be on yours too!
What an incredible read! It was beautifully written, the characters were relatable and good-hearted, and the story wasn't something I had ever read before.
I enjoyed every moment of this book. It was just what I needed during some stressful times.
I highly recommend it to anyone.

Nicole Deese
Synopsis - Lauren Bailey may be a romantic at heart, but there is only one match she's committed to now - The one that makes this teacher a mother. The international adoption had one requirement and that was to stay single for the foreseeable future. This wasn't a problem till Joshua came into the picture. Joshua had a passion for creating educational technology as fascinating as his actions in the classroom. Though she tries to downplay the connection between them, his relentless pursuit of her heart her commitment to stay single to the test.
My thought - I love how Nicole Deese has written this book to feel like you are right there. This is the first book by Nicole Deese I've read and now I want to read all of her books in the near future. I usually like historical christian, but this romance christian book has a lot of aspect in it that I liked. I love how I was pulled into the storyline from the very first page and never could put the book down. You can see the love Lauren has for children in her teaching. I fell in love with Joshua. He was funny from his first scene in the book. All the characters are likeable.
I would love to recommend this book to anyone wanting a funny, tearful and loveable book.
Rating - I give this book a rating of a 5 out of 5
I received this complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was asked for a honest review and all thoughts and feelings are mine and mine alone.
I loved every minute of this book! I was hooked immediately with the easy to love and relate to main character, Lauren, and I was giggling just a few pages in. The whole cast of characters were all relatable and most were people that I’d absolutely love to have for friends. The meaningful messages in here were beautifully demonstrated and had me in tears. If you have adopted or want to adopt, I think this is a must-read, I’ve already recommended it to my friends who have already done an adoption journey. But I also highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a meaningful yet fun book. Lauren’s journey of trusting God for her dreams and trusting His timing made for a book that leaves a lasting impression.
I received a copy of this book, all opinions are my own. I knew I loved The authors writing style and other books before I read this one.
I highly recommend Before I Called You Mine and give it 5 stars!
“ There's an old Chinese proverb that those of us in the adoption community love to share with those new to the journey. “An invisible red thread connects those destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.””
This heartfelt, emotional story is about a long time dream of Lauren's to adopt a child from China, as a single parent. But it's much, much more too! It's about a love story, bonded friendships, struggles of a dysfunctional family, impossible decisions, and dreams stretched beyond human endurance but safely kept in God's hands. And also a book impossible to review because there's just SO much to it that will affect a reader. For me to ugly cry and laugh through the tears at the same time says a lot about how the author can pull such strong emotions out. Nicole Deese is a new-to-me author and she has me completely enamored with her lyrical way of writing. Her sense of humor in her characters endeared me to their personality and watching Lauren & Joshua fall in love was the highlight for me. There are also gut-wrenching parts that severed my heart all while Deese glued those pieces together in a way that was perfect.
“None of us are strong enough to handle the hard apart from God.”
I just have to say, Joshua was the kind of man any woman prays for and he's exactly what Lauren needs for this time in her life. He's patient, kind, supportive, never pushes his agenda, and is just there for her without her ever asking for his help. He brings out the best in Lauren, always putting her needs before himself. I knew a hard decision was coming for Lauren and it gutted me when it did come. Deese pulled out all the stops on this one, I HAD to keep reading to see how she was going to bring about resolution.
“There was effortlessness in conversing with Joshua, an undeniable ease that created a mixed-bag feeling of desire and denial.”
This was also such a spiritual journey for me as I read this. So many truths about God's nature and of who He is to me. Deese has a way to remind the reader that digs deep in your heart and resonates beyond that last page.
“God's way is rarely easy, but it's always better than mine.”
“It's really difficult to hear God's voice when my ears aren't tuned in. But I can tell you one thing, Lauren. God doesn't trick His children. He loves us, and everything He asks of us, or allows us to walk through, has a purpose.”
“God’s best for us rarely comes without the stretching, and it’s in that stretching season, those periods of complete and utter dependence on God’s faithfulness, that He holds our hearts and molds them into a shape that only He can fill.”
So many quotes that touched me & I pray touch you as a reader too. If there is but ONE book that you read, I highly recommend this one. As a fan of Bethany Turner, I'd put Nicole Deese right up there with her writing. “Before I Called You Mine” is one of my top reads for 2020!
*I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishers and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. All opinions are mine. *
Author Nicole Deesse hits it out of the park with a fun, heartwarming tender story with entertaining characters, I liked hanging out with. Lauren thinks, “Was it too late to ask Jesus to take the wheel now that I was no longer driving?....”
I was pleasantly surprised by this amazing story. I loved the authors’ well-timed humor that is masterfully sprinkled through the characters good, bad, and hard times. There were tender moments that made my chest tighten, and tears roll down my eyes just like when I watched a romantic comedy such as Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
These movies (just like this novel) show the challenges relationships go through. This is a wonderful organic love story, mixed with witty dialogue, comedic moments that had me laugh-out loud, and a message I loved hearing over and over again. It’s a winning combination.
I enjoyed the parts that had me stop and think along with Lauran and Joshua too. Could they trust God only when things are going well or did, they stop trusting because things get hard, nearly impossible. Could they trust God’s timing, or were they going to follow their feelings instead? Could Lauren and Joshua be vulnerable enough to lay all their cards on the table for each other to see their hopes and dreams? Could they stay the course? That’s the question. Both struggle with knowing and walking out God’s call for their lives. I loved the natural way this author shared Laura and Joshua’s testimony. It wasn’t preachy. I could relate to Lauren’s upbringing and faith walk and how she is the only believer in her family. Lauren shares, “My parents didn’t raise my sister and me to believe in organized religion of any kind. I never went to Sunday school or attended church camps or any of that. And honestly, that was all totally okay with me. I wasn’t against church or God exactly; I just couldn’t imagine any of that being a part of my life.”
I was captivated by this fresh, funny, clean romance with heart squeezing moments I couldn’t put down. Here’s a peek at the humor as Joshua sends a text to Lauren. “I popped into your classroom to say good morning to you…but unless you’ve aged about thirty years, started wearing bifocals, and changed your ethnicity to Hispanic, it probably wasn’t you. Sorry you’re still feeling lousy. I’ll ..share… all today’s big happenings. Wouldn’t want you to miss out on a riveting day at Brighton, elementary.”
I liked how the author made me feel emotionally invested in Lauren’s support group. I also liked what the author shared in notes to readers, ……”there is something vastly different about this story’s hold on my heart. Because so much of the struggle to live out the kind of faith that often calls us to the edges of ourselves – is my story, too.” She goes on to say, “God doesn’t look for perfect people to share in His redemptive story (you only have to read the first two chapters of Genesis for proof of that). Instead, He searches the earth, looking to “strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him” (2 Chronicles 16:9).
This is the first novel I’ve read by this author it won’t be the last. This book would work wonderful for your book club pick. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

This is such a beautiful story of how we think we have things figured out as far as how life should go, only to have life turned on its head not just once, but twice. That's how Lauren's story is. For as long as she has remembered, she has wanted to be a mother. When life didn't follow the traditional pattern of marriage and then children, and with no man in sight, she is eagerly awaiting the news of being matched with a child to adopt internationally. And then, Joshua enters the picture. I loved how true to life this story was! I could totally relate to Lauren, with thinking you have your future figured out, only to find out that God has other plans. The characters are amazing! And the would be romance. *swoon* I can't recommend this story enough!
I received this book from Bethany House. This is my honest review.
The best love stories, in my opinion, are stories of sacrificial love. And one of the genres best equipped to tell those stories is Christian romance.
What a gift Nicole Deese has given us in Before I Called You Mine! Lovable characters, check. Witty banter, check. Heart-melting hero, check. But also a glimpse at Lauren Bailey's (and, I suspect Nicole Deese's) heart, moved by God to give an orphaned child on the other side of the world hope and a home.
What follows is not just an entertaining escape, but a moving story of courage, love, and the doubt that we each experience wondering WHAT ON EARTH IS GOD DOING? Before I Called You Mine answers with a resounding message to TRUST HIM. Trust Him to always have our best interests at heart, even when our view is so narrow we can't possibly imaging how that would work.
Few - very few - books move me to tears, but the Christ-like love of these characters did. Few of us are called to international adoption, especially in Lauren Bailey's circumstances. But we're all called to step out in faith, trust in God, and love in the way Christ does - sacrificially. Before I Called You Mine delivers that message better than any Christian living book ever could.
"He tilted my face up to his, kissing me with a tenderness that begged for tears. Because I'd fallen in love with him. There was no other way to spin it. No other way to write this story. I was in love with Joshua Avery, and everything in me wanted that to be enough."
From Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese
Lauren Bailey has been matched up with various men over the past decade but one thing or another leads to these relationships to not work out.
She's satisfied with life, being an elementary school teacher she has plenty of children though certain ones hold a special place in her heart and memory.
Her heart years for a child to call her own though and she's been on an adoption list for several years through a foreign adoption agency.
Enter Joshua Avery substitute teacher at the school where she teaches. He's not just another man though , he has such a passion for teaching the children and creating educational technology that Lauren's heart can't help but to come alive in his presence.
She must fight the awakening of her heart for the first time in a long time though, this is not the times for loves blossoming to awaken.
The adoption agency has strict rules about marriage and adoption and she must follow them or be disqualified from adopting.
He relentlessly pursues her heart though and her resolve is weakening . Can she stay unattached as she's put to the test as never before?
The love of a man or the love of a child? Is it fair to have to make this heart wrenching choice? Will she be able to choose between the two deepest desires of her heart?
Excellent book, this one will really make you pause to appreciate all you have in your life, all of God's blessings that shine down upon you!
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you.
All opinions expressed are my own.
I loved this book. For so many different reasons. My first impression was that I was going to like this story a lot. The writing style was super fun, with clever dialogue and well-thought-out characters. The supporting characters also were really well fleshed out right from the beginning.
I really liked that Nicole Deese wrote this story with adoption at the heart. I’ve been around many families who have adopted or have fostered, and this book gave me just bit of a glimpse into that remarkable journey. I feel more honored to know those couples, individuals, and families than I did before, because of the perspective this book gave me.
Lauren really faces an impossible choice, and she reacts to that in ways that I can certainly relate to. I liked that she was far from perfect. She was just as human as I am, so it was all the sweeter to see her redemption story play out as she trusted the Lord with her whole future.
The only thing I would have liked to see added, was if she had written Joshua’s point of view.
The Lord used this novel to work on my own heart. Areas where I needed to trust Him more were exposed, and I was challenged by the story in ways that I didn’t expect. So thank, Nicole, for writing so honestly and authentically. It’s made a difference in my life.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Not only did it entertain, but it also asks the hard questions and the reader cannot help but answer those for themselves.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Before I Called You Mine was an emotionally gripping novel. I liked the two main characters so much, even though I kept wanting Lauren to open herself up to Joshua more, to communicate the situation and all of the ramifications of her decisions better.
Joshua was an amazing main character. He realized early on that Lauren was someone he was interested in, and even when things didn’t go his way, he still provided amazing emotional support for Lauren.
This story had many highs and lows within its pages. It was quite a journey and the author beautifully showed the way God was there for every step of Lauren’s adoption journey. This book was written in first person, from Lauren’s point of view. There were quite a few times in the book that I really wanted to see things from Joshua’s perspective, however, I did recognize by the end of the story that not knowing his thoughts and only seeing things from Lauren’s viewpoint was important in this novel.

This is my first book by this author. I enjoyed it. It is different than many others in that the main focus is on the desire of a woman to be a mother more than on her desire for a spouse. Yet it gets complicated when she meets an amazing man in the classroom next door. Joshua is like a big kid. He loves dinosaurs and is so full of life. He had an amazing rapport with Lauren and Aria. He is immediately attracted to Lauren which puts her in a quandary. I had such a strong picture of Joshua. He reminded me of Chris Carmack ( Atticus Lincoln on Grey’s Anatomy).

This is a beautiful story of adoption and following God’s call on your life. It felt realistic as it talked about the attachment issues when adopting and some of the hardships that most of us can’t imagine. I appreciated that.
I loved the focus on reading and books. I loved this quote: “The way to shape a child’s heart is through love. And the way to shape a child’s mind is through literature. When you read to a child, you accomplish both” (location 384).
I will definitely keep my eye out for more books from this author in the future. Thank you to Bethany House for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Lauren Bailey is a dedicated first grade teacher in Idaho. Her biggest dream now is adopting a parentless child, and from China nonetheless. After a decade of no luck in the love aspect in her life, she gladly accepts the adoption agency’s requirement to remain single for the forseeable future. That is really no problem at all... That is, until Joshua Avery arrives as the first grade teacher substitute for the classroom next door, with all his charm, witt and joyful optimism to make her question everything she had perfectly arranged before. Joshua is more that a sub teacher, he has an admirable passion for developing educational technology (something she dreams of) and he’s a magnet for children and adults in and outside the classroom. How can she stop her feelings from growing, when she can’t get him out of her radar, he’s such a charmer and a gentleman, and when every new bit he discovers about him only makes her yearn for more...
So as the long awaited moment nears, the more she gets to know Joshua and the attraction between just can’t be dimmed in spite of all of her efforts, she wonders if the decision she’s about to make will close her window to finding a different kind of love that mother love will not be able to fill completely. Is there a way to choose without letting the other go?
This is my second book from Nicole Deese and I loved it even more. Now I want to read all of her books!
This book totally tug at my heart strings and touched me deeply. Adoption is a big theme, and although it’s not my case, I have many friends and family who have adopted and they have all my awe. It has been beautiful to see them love their child from their heart with such devotion. Some even have children of their own and you would never notice the difference in their love. I think adoption is a beautiful thing that God highly blesses. This story was unique for me though, as I have never met yet a single woman pursuing adoption. Lauren’s plight was so admirable. And I was also amazed at her determination and the effort and heart she put into this beautiful endeavor. No wonder she doesn’t want Joshua to keep it from happening. She loves the child she doesn’t have yet with an unmatched passion. You could almost think it was obsessive, but it really was a fierce and deep kind of love.
I totally loved both characters and loved to watch their relationship grow, in spite of Lauren reluctance. They have so much in common with their passion for education, introducing children to Literature as a way to make learning more enjoyable and fruitful. The way they deal with children and love them was a sight to behold. Their interaction with children brought a smile and a few laughs to my face. I’ve worked in schools and I share their passion so it felt very relatable...But it was especially their relationship that tugged at my heart. It was so tenderhearted, yes it had enough chemistry but at the same time it was so much more. It was dealing with deep issues together, learning together what God wanted of them. Especially Lauren, who is the one in the middle of two loves that fill her in different ways.
I also loved that they were flawed characters. There’s a point where Lauren recognizes her selfishness behind doing a godly thing, and she needs God to show her the right path, the right way to purify her love. It was endearing to see her journey and struggles in doing the right thing, while having the support of a wonderful man by her side, who stuck by her in spite of everything. How hard can it be to feel the need to let go of one love to receive another who is vulnerable and needs you all the more?
The relationship between Lauren and her adopted child was another amazing thing, and Nicole Deese did it magnificently. In more than one scene I really cried, but in a sweet emotional way. I won’t say much, because I don’t want to spoil the story.
I do have to say that Joshua is one of the best male characters I’ve read. I totally fell in love with him! He’s charming, compassionate, gentlemanly, quirky and with a wonderful sense of humor all in one. He’s selfless and totally genuine. He doesn’t care about what other’s think. And the way she pursued and loved Lauren, oh my! His patience and respectfulness, the way he admired her. Swoon, swoon! The romance was sweet, not the main issue in the story, but oh so tender!
The story has an inspirational message about trusting God and seeking His Will, but it was done in a subtle way, not preachy at all.
I totally recommend this book! It’s perfect for this shelter in place situation. It’s an emotional journey but it’s something that will definitely leave you feeling inspired.
I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher vía NetGalley, but wasn’t required to post a positive review. This is my honest and totally unbiased review.
This book was so good! I read it in a day and a half. I have read many adoption books over the years as an adoptee myself and this has to be the best one I've read in a long time.
The journey of international adoption was filled with both heartache and joy which Nicole Deese shows authentically having adopted her daughter internationally.
Lauren was my favorite kind of heroine! Not only was she a bookworm she wasn't afraid to be a fan girl around her favorite author. That's my kind of bookworm!
Joshua was quirky, funny, kind, and understanding. He was the perfect hero for Lauren and supported her through the ups and downs of her adoption journey.
Overall, this was a fantastic read from beginning to end. I experienced so many emotions as I read this book. I can't recommend this book enough! So, whatever you are reading right now put it down and grab this one!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book via the publisher. I was not required to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ah, this book is like an overflowing cup of happiness! I was totally committed to Lauren’s journey right from the start. And then Joshua walked onto the page and….well, the rest is history as they say. :) Knowing that Ms. Deese pulled from bits of her own personal journey with adoption while writing this only made me more excited to read it! Then once I was started there was no putting it down until the final pages.
I loved Lauren. Her heart and her clear calling to adopt were beautifully portrayed. I was right there with her during every uncertainty, fear, joy and all the emotional upheaval of her current life. She hasn’t taken lightly any of the decisions she’s made and I loved her clear certainty of what God was telling her to do. Even during her doubtful times she could always come back to that confidence as a reminder to keep moving forward. Watching her maneuver through each step in front of her so carefully, prayerfully, yet each one feeling like a giant leap of faith…oh I got it. I have been in such a place myself, not with adoption but I still got it. I loved Jenna, Lauren’s bestie so, SO much for this very reason. Having people behind you, supporting you every step of the way? It’s a wonderful and necessary part of doing this life we’re given! Oh, and Joshua? Swoon. I could totally see why Lauren was such a goner for him! :D Their chemistry is felt in practically every scene they have. They are made for each other, they simply didn’t expect to find each other right now in the messy middle!
Ms. Deese’s heart shines through her writing in this story. It is so wonderfully obvious that she understands the heartache and beauty to be found in adoption, for she treats it with respect and love, acknowledging the hard that comes right along with the joy. All the while interweaving hope and pain and happiness into a delightful picture that makes sense only at the end, not always so much during the process. Which is simply true to life.
There are many words that could be said, but I think I’ll leave you with these. It’s a heart-full, big-smile, happy-sigh kind of story! And I totally think you should read it. So why don’t you? :)

What happens when your dreams are coming true, but just not in the way you had expected? This is the story of Lauren Bailey. She wants to be a wife and mother something fierce. But on the marriage part, she has not had any so called luck. So getting older, she focuses on motherhood instead. She begins the painstaking and patience producing option of adoption. Everything seems to be falling into place.
Lauren knows she will be a great mother. She is already a teacher and she does have a gift for getting children to open up and her teaching techniques are creative. And then in walks substitute teacher Joshua Avery. He surprises her and he very much wants to get to know her. He is pretty much the one man who could make her happy. Except, it is the wrong time. No!!!!
My emotions were going back and forth, and back and forth some more. This was a novel that I was not sure how it was going to end. Happily? I hoped. Dreams fulfilled? I really wanted Lauren to have her cake and be able to eat it to. This was an endearing, heart tugging, sometimes tissue using read. And the meaning behind the red thread is just lovely. This was my very first author Deese book and I will certainly be reading more.

I've found a new author, Nicole Deese, tells a tender story in Before I Called You Mine. Lauren Bailey, is a first grade teacher, who longs to adopt a child of her own, all she needs is an email letting her know, that the long wait is over. Joshua Avery, is a substitute teacher, who has a personality, that is like no one Lauren has ever met before. This story was well written and had all the emotions. I loved this book so much, I laughed and cried, it was amazing!
Before I go any further with this book review - let me make it short and sweet - YES, 5 stars for me!
Before I Called You Mine is a must read in my opinion and here is the reason why.... the conflict was so moving and you could feel it in your own heart. Lauren Bailey, the main character, is a teacher who decides to pursue adoption but with many obstacles in her way. Now I have never adopted a child, but I do know that it can entail heartbreak and many struggles. Before I Called You Mine does not shy away from those things, which is what made the story so touching and authentic. I could feel the roller coaster of emotions and decisions that the main character wades through. She has a family that is unsupportive and is trying to work through everything that entails. And just as she puts dating off to the side in order to pursue adoption, Joshua comes on the scene. I simply could not put this book down. There are some real tug of war moments that make you gasp out loud. Nicole Deese has a beautiful way of writing and you will also laugh through some pages.
This is not a Hallmark script book. So if you like a clutching storyline with a thread of romance, you will enjoy Before I Called You Mine.
Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese sports an eye-catching cover that reflects the lovely story in its pages. The story held my attention from the beginning and I enjoyed Lauren’s journey, even in the hard moments. Though the story deals with tough issues – difficult life choices, family dysfunction, etc. – it maintained a light feel and pointed to the Christian’s true source of hope -- God.
Before I Called You Mine mixed women’s fiction with a contemporary romance. Both Lauren’s adoption journey and family relationships receive plenty of attention. The story explored various aspects of following God’s will for one’s life. However, on the romantic side, Joshua (Lauren’s romantic interest) stands as an amazing male lead. He’s supportive, respectful, and willing to do what’s best for others even if it hurts. In short, he reflects the character of the Jesus he follows.
Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese is a heartwarming novel that will appeal to inspirational fiction readers. It earned a permanent spot on my bookshelf.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
This novel is a beautifully written story with all of the elements: hope, love, spirituality, truth, fear and joy. It will take hold of your senses and give you a ride worth taking...and feeling. Highly recommended.
Perfect doesn't begin to describe this story for me. Heartfelt, thought provoking, tear jerking and all round smiles in the end because the realisation that God's plans are always perfect even when it seems like it wouldn't work out.
Lauren is everyone of us. Sometimes we make decisions where we are so sure of the outcome not necessarily sure it's God's plan for us at that moment and when it falls through we begin to question the situation. His plans are always perfect even through the refining process when we have gone through the heartbreak and just want to give up.
I LOVED Joshua, steady, loving, he was so sure and willing to stand by Lauren through everything. I loved the romance though heartbreaking at times, it was all worth it in the end.
This has to be one of my favourite reads this year. The insight especially into adoption and the emotional rollercoaster that it is was really enlightening. And the message of what does God want me to walk with him on today will stay with me.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via Netgalley. All opinions expressed are solely mine
Wow! What an INCREDIBLE story! Lauren Bailey longs to be a mom. She is waiting for a child from a Chinese adoption agency. As life is somewhat on "hold" until a child becomes available, Lauren pours herself into her 1st grade students. When a new substitute with unorthodox teaching methods begins teaching in the classroom across the hall from Lauren, the possibility of romance also enters the picture. Will Lauren trust God to work the impossible? This book will surprise you in so many ways and will enrich your life in ways you can't predict. FANTASTIC story!
Be prepared. I am about to gush about this wonderful book.
When I finished the last page of this book, my heart was overflowing. I saw the author’s heart on every single page. This is not just a story about the romance between Lauren and Joshua; neither is it solely about the issue of adoption. The focus of this book is on listening to God’s call on our lives and following Him through times that are good; times that are difficult; and times when the way isn’t clear. It’s about believing that God is always working behind the scenes of our lives at all times. The main character, Lauren, has a giving heart, but also some areas in her Christian walk that needed some work. That combination is what makes this story work so well. We get to see both Lauren and Joshua grow in their faith as they search for God’s will for their lives.
I have to add this: As a former first grade teacher, I thought the parts with Lauren and her students were perfect. First graders are unique little people, and Lauren’s love for her class was so sweet. It also would have been fun to watch Joshua teach a classroom of first graders.
Read this sweet story. Have a box of tissues next to you when you read. This book is one of the very best I’ve read this year, and when you read it, I’m guessing you will feel that way, too. If there were a six-star rating, this book would earn it. And one more thing—don’t miss the author’s notes at the end.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
This contemporary romance was sweet and compelling. There were no easy answers for this couple, and I appreciate that the author didn't try to give them any. The chemistry was good, the banter was fun, and the story was realistic. This story will pull on your heart strings. Highly recommnded for readers of contemporary romance.
I received a free copy of this book for the purpose of review.
Heart-wrenching in a beautiful way. The world we live in is all about instant gratification. We want everything without sacrificing anything and we want it right now.
After many failed relationships, Lauren refuses to date anymore. She's tired of the bad set-ups and the short-lived happily-never-afters. Instead, her heart yearns to be a mother and she pursues international adoption. When her adoption agency notifies her that she's at the top of the list, life throws a wrench in her plans in the form of Joshua, a man she can't get out of her head no matter what internal rules she applies to future interactions with him.
Lauren comes to a crossroads and struggles with which road to take. But "love isn't about instant gratification, it's about showing up for the journey in riding out all the twists and turns along the way". While I usually prefer a steady stream of humor, I find that the books I love most or teach me life lessons are just like this: poignant and will set up residence in my heart.

Before I Called You Mine.
Oh my. I am trying to give fewer five star reviews, but for this one, I need at least six. Seriously now.
Lauren is clear on what she wants from page one. To be a mother. To adopt an orphan from China and love them with her whole heart. As part of that, she commits to staying single. Then Joshua arrives as a substitute teacher across the hall. He's everything she'd ever dreamed of in a man, and so much more. His interest in her is clear from that first meeting, but while Lauren's heart must stay focused on China.
But then a twist I didn't see coming changes everything and the two fall head of heels in love. Until a call from the adoption agency changes everything again.
Nicole Deese has penned an absolute winner here. I smiled, laughed, teared up, gasped, winced, smiled and, at the very end, sighed a very satisfied sigh.
The characters climbed right into my heart along with their extended family and friends. I adored visiting Idaho in winter (I love snow). The adoption stories were handled sensitively, with honesty and just enough humor, and the romance had me falling in love right alongside them.
I loved this book and hope you will too.

The perfect blend of heartwarming, humorous, and heart wrenching.
Lauren is caught between the two things that she has wanted most, and to have one would mean to lose the other. I instantly loved Lauren, and empathized with her. I loved how this story was original, yet relatable throughout, especially the way that the adoption process was portrayed and how it is long frustrating and heartbreaking.
This book completely captivated me, devastated me, made me smile, and put me together again. I loved the characters, and the complete premise of this book, I felt the weight of Lauren's decisions right alongside her.
Josh is ah-mazing. I loved his naturally camaraderie with the children, as well as his wonderfully supportive family. He has a good sense of humor, and is an all around very likable guy. I love how he really listens to Lauren and is supportive of her throughout.
Overall this book is compelling and captured my heart from the first and even more as the book progressed. I loved how we have a very relatable and likable 30-something heroine, who has a desire for a family life like her peers, with a child and husband, but that just didn't happen for her. I loved how this book blended amazing emotional depth, with great characters, a fantastically beautiful and original premise, with humor, and a strong sense of community and family. One of my favorite books this year, and definitely one of my favorite contemporary reads, as this not always a genre I am drawn to. Highly recommend this heartfelt novel about finding love in the most unexpected of ways and timing.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was a sweet, honest contemporary Christian romance. The main character wanted so badly to do the right thing and follow God's call on her life, and I was rooting for her and Joshua the entire way to the happy ending.

Every once in a while you’ll find yourself lucky enough to pick up a book that speaks to your very soul in heartrending yet remarkable ways. Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese was such a book for me. I started to read it before bed a few nights ago without re-reading the summary and had totally forgotten what it was about. I selected it because the cover led me to mistakenly think it would be an easy, breezy read. I was so far mistaken that I read well into the early hours of the morning, caught half a night’s sleep, and then dove right in again as soon as my other responsibilities were taken care of because it tied a string around my heart and roped me in until the very last page. It was a fend for yourself, kids, type of day.
As for the easy, breezy I was only half right. It was such an easy book to read, but it gripped me too – I cried more than once at the tenuous tightrope of desires that Lauren, the lead, found herself trying to balance on while trying to honour a commitment to her future child while trying to suss out the right choices in life. There was nothing breezy in the subject matter despite the at first glance, the lighthearted appeal of the potential romantic interest, Joshua, and the author’s picturesque humourous situations.
Deese did a wonderful job of painting a not-always-rosy picture of the process of adoption and even issues post-adoption, but she also did a wonderful job of infusing the story with a beautiful yearning and deep heartfelt love. She broached family dysfunction and forgiveness, loss, grief, acceptance, faith, trust, hope, healing, complications, connection, commitments, and so much more in this touching, emotional read. This inspirational title was poignant and complex and absolutely splendid all the same.
My thanks to Bethany House for providing me with a complimentary copy of this title via NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.
This book was wonderful. There were different points throughout the book where I wasn't sure if I would like the ending, but I ended up loving the ending. The author tackles some really important subjects, motherhood, love, international adoption, family, and does it in a way that was very engaging. I also really liked the main character, Lauren. I felt very invested in her story throughout the book!
Before I Called You Mine is a poignant, heart-warming story. Lauren is a likeable lead, one easy to empathize with even when you may not agree with everything she’s doing. Truly she is a breath of fresh air, with Deese’s first person narration bringing to life an altogether realistic main character. She is deep into her goal of international adoption, but a possible kink comes up in her plan, when she meets the man of her dreams. Josh is a huge highlight of this story. I’m not sure how Deese manages to strike the perfect balance in a male lead, but Josh is it. Confident and persistent, yet not pushy, he is the epitome of the trend I’m loving right now, which is that of a quiet strength – a true gentleman. However, choosing him means losing the opportunity to adopt, something that she feels deeply called to do.
Speaking of balance, this novel strikes the right notes between heartache and hope. It feels entirely plausible and real, yet also like an impossibly hard situation. The story is bittersweet at times, highlighting how sometimes our dreams may conflict with each other and how those conflicts can be reconciled – if they can be reconciled at all. It’s also about finding peace regardless of the circumstance, and that is always a welcome reminder for me. This is very much a faith-filled novel, but I never feel like anything is preachy; it suits the circumstances that Lauren finds herself in very well. It’s not without its moments of levity. I often had a big smile on my face while reading this story
The elementary school setting feels very realistic, however, as a school librarian myself, I found the image she portrayed of the librarian to be dated. School libraries are rarely just a story time anymore; we are expected to do lessons and activities with students (even though I do try to read a lot of stories). It’s a very busy, demanding job, and I just wanted to make note of that as it’s something that I have a personal connection. I kind of stalled out a bit with that part, but once I got past it, I was enthralled by the story and hardly put it down.
This story does have a happy ending, but it is hard won indeed. That makes it that much sweeter, in this reader’s opinion. This is not the typical romantic contemporary, but transcends a simple romance, becoming a unique story of perceived missed opportunities and the joys that they can bring at the journey’s end.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher; I was not required to post a positive review, and the opinions expressed here are my own.
This book arrived at such a wonderful time. In the midst of self isolation and concern about current events; Nicole Deese lit a candle of hope via this novel.
Why? Because this story revolves around hope. The main character, Lauren, has experienced a dismal series of relationships and longs for a child. She decides to pursue international adoption which requires a promise to not alter her relationship status for a period of time.
Seems like an easy agreement to make until a new substitute teacher joins the staff. Joshua is a character that is just so likeable and causes Lauren to re-evaluate that adoption agreement.
What direction will Lauren's heart lead her in?
A much longed for child?
A relationship filled with promise?
Nicole Deese is a new author for me and this story is heartfelt. Deese based some of it upon her experience as someone who adopted a child from another country.
This is a novel that will wrap itself around your heart and fill it with hope.

This. Book. Y’all.
Today I found myself losing a battle against tears that were steadily running down my face. Our FedEx man was in our neighborhood and I knew he had a package I had to sign for. I tried so hard not to cry, but still found myself wiping away tears when I answered the door.
This story broke my heart and mended it all at once.
Lauren Bailey is a First Grade teacher from a dysfunctional family who has one dream in life:to be a mother. She wants to love and be loved in a way that she never experienced as a child. She has set her sights on adopting a child internationally from China, and in order to meet her agency’s requirements for stability, she must either find Mr. Right and be married for two years or stay single for the duration of her matching phase and while her child is adjusting & attaching to her. She was perfectly content to move forward as a single woman, that is until she met HIM.
Joshua Avery is a nerd in the most respected sense of the word. His temporary sub position at Brighton Elementary puts him right across the hall from Lauren’s classroom-and in even closer proximity to breaking down every wall around her safely guarded heart.
As time marches on, Lauren finds herself in a convergence of paths with a choice to make.
These characters were very real to me and as a future adoptive mother whose plans are temporarily on hold, I related so well to every emotion and feeling that Lauren experienced. I cried with her when she cried, I rejoiced with her when she rejoiced. I was meant to read this book at this point in my life. Nicole Deese has touched my heart and helped encourage me to make the hard decisions and follow wholly after God’s will, not leaning on my own understanding. This book has imprinted on my heart in a way no other has ever done.
If you have any interest in fostering or adoption, or simply enjoy sweet heartfelt reads, you don’t want to miss this one. But keep tissues handy, you will need them.

Sometimes you can only take one step at a time...
Women's fiction has never been my thing. Just a little bit too much emotion and estrogen for me. But, once in awhile I step outside of that generalization and try one. While billed as contemporary romance I do think that Before I Called You Mine also straddles the women's fiction genre. Nicole Deese is a new to me author but I liked the cover with it's simple yet pretty design so I decided to try it.
If there's one thing that I took away from this story it's that family is messy and relationships are complicated but God will see us through if we let Him. Oh, and dinosaurs are totally cool. As expected there was a lot of emotional upheaval in Before I Called You Mine but I found myself unexpectedly relating to at least some of it. Some aspects of my life, including age, are fairly similar to Lauren's so I kinda got where she was coming from.
Nicole Deese takes her characters on a rollercoaster of a ride. And I'm not just talking about the romance thread either. No, I'm also talking about Lauren's adoption journey. From elation to heartbreak, from pain to celebration, all of it is brought to life on the printed page.
While not my usual choice in reading I'm glad I picked up Before I Called You Mine. It was sweet, poignant, thought-provoking, and tugged at the heartstrings. The story was well-written and I will be looking for more from author Nicole Deese in the future.
(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
I saw the beauty of the cover. The adorable name. The pretty flowers. Then I scrolled down to the blurb... My, oh, my!
I was in love! The sweetness of the story drew me in and that was just from the description.
Starting to read Before I Called You Mine I was pulled into the bound up bit of heartbreak and love, being my first book from Nicole Deese I was not sure what I would find. I fell in love with the way she showed a character who was not perfect and she wasn't boring, I was somewhat worried that Lauren would be a dull and maybe cliche character but I couldn't have been more wrong!
With so many feelings, so many emotions, and just so much heart clinching love, I adored every minute reading Before I Called You Mine, and the adoption journey! I have not gone through anything like what Lauren went through but that didn't stop me from feeling like I was right there beside her, the imagery was incredible, the way Deese pulled you into her carefully woven literary artwork was a delight to behold.
Joshua … He is a sweetheart! He reminded me of my brother, really, the dinosaur love, the care of others, and just his sweetheartness. I loved his character, I did at times wish we saw his thoughts but it was all right.
The arc of Lauren and Joshua's relationship and characters were done in a slow, subtle way that made them feel even more real.
Now, Jenna, she was interesting! I loved how she was like another part of our heroine and they were so hilarious at times. She and Brian were such a cute addition, I loved their support of Lauren and how they added to the story.
I am not saying that this book wasn't painful at times … It was! And though I can't say what happened it nearly had me in tears, so saddening and yet it made the story even more real and raw!
The whole of this book was wonderful and I loved how everything made a good plotline, everything Lauren did somehow reflecting the love she had for her future child and how she loved them already.
I cannot wait to see what Nicole Deese writes next, I am so glad she wrote this book, and that I read it!
Nicole Deese's passion for adoption shone through every word, giving readers a bit of passion too.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Before I Called You Mine, by Nicole Deese, is a stunning work of contemporary fiction. Abounding with heart, authenticity, and true vulnerability, this novel is nearly flawless. With an emotionally-stirring plot and compelling characters, this book is thoroughly engaging from the first page to the last.
Though not a typical love story, this book is most certainly an unforgettable tale of love. The love God holds for every human soul, the love that is shared in families, the love that blooms between a man and a woman, the love that nurtures friendships, and the love that connects the heart of a mother with that of her child are all various threads of love that Ms. Deese intricately weaves throughout this novel. With boldness softened by grace, the author reveals her extraordinary writing talent as she thoughtfully develops a storyline that explores the commitment, sacrifices, set-backs, blessings, and joys that are the very framework of international adoption. Utterly immersive in its style and profoundly moving in its scope, this novel envelops the reader in a relevant story that is wholly life-changing.
Achingly beautiful, uplifting, and truly memorable, Before I Called You Mine, is a meaningful novel that inspires even as it entertains. With genuine hope, it beckons the reader to venture into the difficult spaces of obedience, purpose, and calling that yield the greatest rewards. From beginning to end, it is everything a great novel should be. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Wow! What a sweet book! I was just dying to finish this book; I didn't want to stop reading! I wanted to find out what was going to happen so bad. At about 50% of the way through, I was wishing I could speed read! Such a great story of adoption, healing, forgiveness, and love. There were many moments of smiles and laughter and many more of sore throat holding in my tears. This is a great Christian Contemporary Fiction with a bit of Romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I was not required to write an positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
I absolutely LOVED this book! Such an amazing story of faith, family and finding love when you least expect it. Deese brilliantly delivered a heartwarming story tackling of motherhood, international adoption, tough family circumstances, sacrifice, and impossible choices that is so captivating to read.
This book is one that stays with you for a long time after the final page. I laughed, I cried, I smiled a lot. You don’t want to skip this read!
Special thanks to Bethany House Publishers for the advanced copies in exchange for only my honest thoughts and review.
Wow . . . I don't know what I was expecting out of this novel, but it far exceeded any expectations I may have had. Very quickly I was drawn into the story, and despite being a somewhat slow-paced book with nothing much major happening plot-wise . . . I still didn't want to put it down! I can't help but attribute that to Deese's engaging writing style and gripping characters. I'm not a huge fan of first person POV, but it did work well for this story. There was humor mixed in with the more serious themes and kept the story moving.
Lauren is an incredibly realistic and relatable character. She's flawed and struggles just as much as the rest of us. I enjoyed getting to know her and follow the ups and downs of her story. Joshua is a very sweet character as well and he was a great counterpart to Lauren. I loved how he pursued her but was still so very respectful and supported her in her dreams. Can I get a Joshua pretty please???
The theme of adoption was unique and very moving. Adoption is something that is very close to my heart, so it was fascinating to learn more about it. I loved that Deese showed the realisticality of adoption in Lauren's storyline. It isn't easy or painless. But it is worth it.
Overall, this was simply a beautiful novel and fully deserving of all 5 stars! I highly recommend this is you love moving contemporary fiction or if adoption is a subject you're interested in! Well done, Ms. Deese!
Heart warming. Touching. Beautiful.
This is the first book I've read from this author, but I know I'll read more from her. She perfectly made me fall in love with the characters, sympathizing with them, all while exploring emotional topics.
In the end, I rooted for Lauren. This was a wonderful book and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for something that will give them the "warm and fuzzies" when they are done reading it!
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this and to voluntarily give my honest opinion.
I absolutely loved this book! It was so much more than a romance novel. It's a beautifully written story about trusting in God and being willing to sacrifice everything to surrender to His will.
Lauren felt a strong calling toward international adoption and started the process over a year ago. As she waits to be matched with a child, she meets Joshua and they have an immediate connection. Joshua is sweet, kind and makes her laugh. The problem is, she applied to adopt as a single mother and can't pursue a serious relationship. Lauren struggles to figure out which path God wants her to choose.
There are so many heartfelt moments and there are moments that make you laugh. I loved the secondary characters as well. Everyone needs a best friend like Jenna! It was my first by this author, but it won't be the last. I highly recommend this book!
Oh, this book! It had me feeling all the feels: joy, sadness, anger, hope. The novel is written in first person from Lauren's perspective, and I think that really helped me connect with the character. Lauren is so likable—certainly not perfect, as her complicated relationship with her family shows, but absolutely trying to do the right thing and following the call God put on her life.
The budding romance between Lauren and Joshua is sweet (Joshua is certainly a delightful romantic hero), and if Before I Called You Mine were just a romance, I would have enjoyed it. But what takes this book to another level is Lauren's other relationships—with her best friend Jenna, adoptive mom Gail (whose son really started Lauren thinking about adoption), Joshua's family, and Lauren's mom and sister. These relationships all felt so real, and all were integral to Lauren's adoption journey, which is really the heart of this novel.
I really appreciated this look into international adoption—I know a few people who have adopted internationally, and it was clear that Deese knew what she was talking about. I wasn't at all surprised to see in Deese's author's note that she and her husband adopted from China. There's definitely a ring of authenticity to Lauren's journey.
Also, I have to mention that I did not know how this book would end. That is so, so rare in a romance, and I really appreciated it. I flew through the pages, wondering what would happen next, and the end result is an incredibly satisfying, thought provoking novel.
Before I Called You Mine Review
Wow. Let me first say that this book gave me all the feels and all the happy tears. I did not expect to love this book as much as I did and I’m so glad my expectations were exceeded.
Lauren was a single woman who knew exactly what she wanted at 31 years old. She was grounded and happy in her career as a first grade teacher, but longed to be a mother, choosing international adoption.
Joshua was not the man she ever expected to meet. Charming, smart, nerdy and God-fearing, he blew into her life just as crazily as he blew into Brighton Elementary in his ask-me-about-my-T-Rex shirt.
I fell in love with Joshua and Lauren from the beginning, but even more so during the Christmas Tree Lighting “date.” It was so exciting to watch them encourage and love each other, all while respecting the other’s boundaries. Their chemistry oozed from the pages in such a natural way and I couldn’t get enough of their spontaneous Build-A-Bear trips or cozy fireside conversations.
The side characters, Jenna and Gail, were phenomenal. They are the people you dream of to be in your life to encourage you and remind you of what’s important. They added SO much to this story, among others. Even Lauren’s mother and sister, who I despised towards the beginning. It’s a testament to your writing ability that I ended up appreciating them.
Some of the beautiful scenes you wrote completely ripped my heart in two (the New Years Day conversation in the nursery), while others made me smile and laugh (the China trip). The texting conversations between Lauren and Joshua always made me smile 😊
The thing I loved the most about this book was how you reminded us through your beautiful writing, that you have to trust in God’s timing, even if it forces you to make some of the hardest decisions of your life. You can rebel all you want, but in the end, all it does is delay the inevitable plans He has for you. Plans that are far greater than what you ever imagined.
Thank you so much for writing this book. It was very impactful and couldn’t have been read at a better time. I hope others are encouraged by it as well.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bethany House for this ARC
I LOVED this one. LOVED it! I’ve recently read two bad attempts at Christian Fiction, so I can’t say I had high hopes for this one. Wrong! Before I Called You Mine is Christian Fiction dome right.
Lauren is a single first grade teacher in her early 30’s who has decide to adopt a child from China... this also means that she must remain single until the adoption is final. This is not a problem until Joshua starts substituting in the classroom across the hall. Joshua is in educational software, crazy about dinosaurs, and the son of Lauren’s educational guru. While Lauren makes it clear they need to stay just friends, Joshua ends up meaning a lot to her - especially while she’s on the rollercoaster that is adoption. Lauren knows God is calling her to be a mom, but she can’t imagine life with Joshua.
This book was excellent. It was sweet, it was touching, it was funny. In a lot of ways, I feel like I could see myself in Lauren (being a single 30-something teacher), and I kept imagining myself in her shoes/wondering how I’d handle her situations. I loved how strong Jamie was, and I was proud of her decisions. I wish we could be friends in real life! I’ll be waiting for my Prince Charming to be substituting across the hall if we every get out of quarantine...
I received an ARC from @netgalley. I’m dumb, so I didn’t read it immediately. It’s out! I’m gonna Amazon a copy to my mom right now.
This one was simply a scrumptious feast of literary pleasure. A gentle romance is central to the story but not the main issue: the main issue is adoption. And poor Lauren is stuck where she has to pick between romance and motherhood for her future!! Say what? Mean author, right? Well, it sure makes a compelling story as Lauren wrestles for her dreams even while she faces having to pick between the two things she wants most: though motherhood is drawing at her heart, attraction to her new co-worker is making her heart dance a bit too high.
Joshua was easy to like and I really enjoyed how their interactions went. We got lots of page time with them together, and I especially loved the texting scenes and the tree lighting scene best.
My favorite thing was how adult they are. They actually <I>talk through things when they have issues! And they don't forget they have issues because they have attraction!</I> This is exactly what I love reading in a good romance: believable adult interaction. Spot on.
But oh, Lauren's journey to motherhood...ouch, ouch, ouch...you're sure to cry over and over again...make sure you start with the multi-pack of Kleenex or a roll of paper towels!!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free reading copy. A favorable review was not required.
It took me a while. Months actually to pick this book up but i wish I would’ve done it sooner! I loved it more than i could say. I loved lauren and joshua’s romance, the representation of her relationship with god and her faith in him, as well as her struggle and journey of adoption. As a believer in Christ who also seeks adopting one day it truly is a story of hope <3
This book was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS and continued to surprise me over and over.
Confession Time: I requested this book because of the adoption theme. I've long had a heart for adoption and will always jump at the chance to read amazing books about it. But to be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to "like-like" it, you know? Nicole Deese is a new to me author and the book had a bit of a slower pace. Also, not going to lie, Lauren may have caused a little bit of growling from me. I'm just saying.
BUT THEN. Guys, this story, was absolutely the sweetest, from the romance (which let me tell you was no picnic), to the adoption struggles and heartache (and the unique vantage point we get to experience following the journey of a single woman adopting), to all of the little, beautiful moments and characters that tied it all together into an incredible, heart-challenging and heart-warming adventure.
Despite earlier remark, or perhaps in extension to it, Lauren’s character arc is one that I will remember for a long time to come. Also Joshua Avery is all of the things. 😁
Five Stars, highly recommend this one!!
Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese is a book about adoption. I found this book interesting and was excited to start reading it. But it totally blew me away in a way I never expected. This book is so deep with emotion and so much love. The depth of emotion was amazing and it made a beautiful story that made me want to read more by this author. Highly recommended! I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
I do not have adequate words to do this book justice. Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Desse is absolutely amazing. I loved every minute with Lauren and Joshua and I am so sad my time with these characters is over. I can say with great sincerity, this is a story I will never forget.
There is SO much to love and appreciate about this story, but here are my top three reasons this book should be read immediately (if you haven’t read it yet):
Lauren and Joshua’s relationship — I love everything about these two characters and their path to love. How they meet is super cute and super hilarious. Joshua is an excellent hero and I love how instantly attracted he is to Lauren. I love how he truly sees who she is right from the very beginning. Because of her standing with the international adoption agency, Lauren is not able to date. Joshua accepts and respects this, so he and Lauren become good friends. I’m talking really good friends. This may actually be my favorite aspect of their relationship. Yes, the chemistry between the two is fierce, but the foundation they create as friends is everything. It’s what gets them through some really tough moments and eventually allows them to get to their happily ever after. Lauren and Joshua’s relationship makes my heart so, so happy.
Motherhood (in God’s time) — Being a mom is hard. I mean really hard. The mom-guilt, the sleepless nights, the worry and anxiety, the constant second-guessing — and that’s just the emotional aspect. There’s also the physical aspect — working a full-time job all day then coming home to make dinner, checking homework, chauffeuring to practices, doctor appointments, and/or school events, and the whole bedtime routine. A 24-hour day can sometimes feel endless. But, it is all 100% worth it. I have wanted to be a mom since I was four-years-old. It took me a long time to be a mom, and I often struggled in the waiting. There were many nights where I wrestled with God begging Him to make my dreams come true. Years would go by and still no husband and still no baby. I got to the point where I was ready to give up. Clearly, God didn’t want me to be a mom. Wouldn’t you know it, when I stopped trying to force the matter God put my husband into my life, and then my daughter came several years later. What I appreciated, perhaps the most, about this story is Lauren’s impatience. I appreciate this because her impatience is SO relatable. Lauren wants to be a mom but it’s just not working out. The men she has been on dates with are NOT husband material. It’s been years and years of awful first dates that lead to nowhere. So, she applies for international adoption thinking that maybe she is meant to be a single mom, but even that is taking forever and seems to lead to a whole lot of nothing. In all the waiting — the constant waiting — Lauren sees moms everywhere and it hurts. Why can’t she have her dreams? Lauren wrestles with God (and His timing) and gets to a point where she kind of wants to give up. And then life happens BIG time and she has to make hard choices. What Lauren goes through is SO realistic it makes her a very life-like character who is super easy to root for and love. And, Lauren’s story proves that God’s timing truly is perfect.
Fangirling over a popular education guru — So this may be something only teachers get, but Lauren’s adoration for Joshua’s father (the educational guru) made me laugh out loud. There are several real-life education gurus I would love to meet, specifically Kelly Gallagher. How this man has informed my teaching over the years is incalculable. I know for a fact that if I ever met him I would be tongue-tied. I know cause I got to meet two of my FAVORITE poets — Billy Collins and Seamus Heaney — and it was like my mouth and brain stopped functioning. Anyway, I love how passionate a teacher Lauren is because of the strong teachers who came before her. I love how Deese illustrates the good-heartedness and nerdiness of teachers. It was fun to see a representation of myself and so many teachers I know and love through Lauren’s character.
I’m sorry it took me so long to get to this book, but I am seriously glad I did finally read this lovely story. Before I Called You Mine is an exceptional story that made me laugh and cry and cheer. I’m leaving this story filled with heartwarming hope. If you haven’t read this book yet, I highly recommend you do ASAP. Before I Called You Mine is a story you will not want to miss.
I received a copy of this novel in eBook form from the publisher, Bethany House Publishing, via NetGalley in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
While this book is a romantic comedy, the Christian aspect is prevalent but not preachy. A story of heartbreak, hope, choices, and faith. The adoption journey was a beautiful tale by itself. Be ready to be touched deeply and emotionally.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bethany House Publishers for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
