Description
What's the worst thing that can happen to a werewolf? Unable to shift for three months, Mateo Cruz knows all too well. His wolf has taken up residence in his head, taunting him night and day with vividly violent and carnal thoughts. Convinced he's cursed, he needs the help of a powerful witch before he literally goes insane.
Evie Savoie has always obeyed the house rules of her coven--no werewolves. They're known for being moody and volatile. So, when a distempered, dangerous werewolf strolls into the bar and almost strangles one of her late-night customers, she's ready to bounce him through the door. But the desperation in his eyes when he begs her to help him softens her heart and convinces her to bend the rules.
What Evie doesn't know is that Mateo's wolf has a mind of his own. And now that she's in his sights, he wants only one thing. Her.

This story is over the top with the snark and man does it work out well!! I loved every second of it and man do I need a finished copy. If you love the Vampire Diaries then I would totally check this one out. Even if you aren't I would still read it!! I you love witches and werewolves etc. With humor and romance this book was a total hit!! Great pacing and characters and I can't wait for the next one.
I think Juliette Cross will be my next favorite author! She can write about Angels and Demons, Vampires and Fairytales and now about Werewolfs and Witches. And the stories are all awesome! Mateo Cruz is a werewolf with a problem: he hasn't been able to shift for 3 months now and his Alpha is ready to break out of control. The conversations going on in his head with his Alpha are hilarious! But Mateo knows that if he doesn't get some help, his violent Alpha will take over and start killing people.
So he turns to the powerful Savoie sisters. They are the most powerful witches in the neighborhood. But the witches normally don't do business with werewolves. Evie doesn't know why her eldest sister Jules doesn't want them to be involved with werewolves. However, when she looks into Mateo's haunted eyes, she knows she has to help him break his hex.
So, together they try to find out who has bind Mateo's wolf. And while doing so, the Alpha puts in his two cents every other sentence. And usually with some dirty comment (LOL). Evie's sisters: Clara, Violet and Jules are also trying to help. And while searching for the answer, we also get glimpses into the lives of the sisters. So, why is Violet acting all weird when Mateo's cousin Nico comes to help out Mateo? And what is this weird tension between Jules and Ruben the mighty vampire who helps them find the book of hexes. Find out for yourself if they are able to release Alpha. Fun, witty and loveable! Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the next story will be about Violet or Jules, because I really want to know what is happening there...
Really enjoyed this book.
Mateo is a werewolf, he believes he has been cursed because he cannot shift and his wolf called Alpha keeps talking to him and its driving hum crazy. Mateo goes to see Evie who is a witch to get her to help him by lifting the hex on him.
This was a lot of fun, i actually think its doing the book a diservice by comparing it to the vampire diaries, because they were terrible books, it is so much better than that. I read a lot of JR Ward and Gena SHowalter and this for me is along those lines.
Im glad that this isnt a stand alone because you can see Violet being the star of the next book.
Solid 5 stars. Loved it.
Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross is the 1st book in her new Stay a Spell series. I cannot say enough about Juliette, who is one of my favorite authors. She never fails…never ever…to give us a fantastic story in an equally fantastic series. Did I like Wolf Gone Wild??? I loved it, and was thrilled to see a different kind of series for Juliette. Loved all the witches and werewolves….awesome.
Mateo Cruz, our hero, is a wolf shifter and has not been able to shift to his wolf for over three months; his inner wolf has been driving him crazy with loud, snarky and violent comments. He knows something is wrong, that he is cursed; so, desperation drives Mateo to seek out a witch who is known to be a hex-breaker. The problem? Witches do not help werewolves.
Evie Savoie, our heroine, is the hex-breaker in her witch family, the Savoie sisters. Evie is working at a local bar, where she meets with clients, and immediately notices Mateo. She tries to avoid him, knowing the rules…no werewolves; but Evie sees the desperation in his eyes, not to mention her immediate attraction. To make matters worse, Mateo’s wolf (Alpha) is constantly yelling to him about his insatiable desire for the pretty witch.
Evie decides to help Mateo, and brings him home for her to plead her case to her sisters, each of whom have their own powers. They all agree to help Mateo find out who has cursed him, even though they discover that he has been affected by a powerful witch.
What follows is an exciting, intense, and sexy adventure to save Mateo. Juliette’s addition of Alpha, was not only downright dirty, but a lot of fun too. I loved Evie and Mateo together (with the added comments from Alpha); they did make a fabulous sexy couple with amazing chemistry. No surprise here, as Juliette always comes up with fantastic couples. The sisters were also great, especially Jules, Violet and Clara, just to name a few; I can’t wait to meet them all in the future books.
Wolf Gone Wild was so well written by Juliette Cross. To tell too much more would be spoilers. If you enjoy a paranormal romance, exciting action, surprise twists, great secondary characters, and a couple that has sizzling chemistry; you need to read this book. I cannot wait to see what Juliette has in store for us next.
What a dirty thinking Alpha dog!!! I LOVED him!!!
When Mateo has a hex put on him, he is no longer able to shift into wolf form. As a result, his inner wolf, Alpha, is driving him crazy. His only hope is Evie Savoie. Her witchy specialty is removing hexes but it doesn’t take Mateo long to realize that just being in her presence soothes and quietens the beast within him.
I can’t express how much I absolutely loved Mateo as well as his raunchy, dirty talking sidekick, Alpha. Mateo was a bit shy, uncertain, and adorably cute, while Alpha lived for only two things: blood and sex. Together they entertained the heck out of me.
’”I wanted to come by and sort of look at you, I mean, see you. Hang out with you.” That was the stupidest ----ing string of words I’d ever put together.
She laughed. My heart soared. “You just couldn’t live without me, could you?”
You have no ----ing idea.’
Evie was a total geek when it came to sci-fi movies and comic books. The fact that Mateo didn’t have a clue what she was talking about opened up the door for lots of witty banter as she introduces him to pop culture. Add in the extreme chemistry between them and the intensity of Alpha’s desire and Evie was pretty much a goner.
’Mateo was the key. Alpha was the welcome mat. And I was loving the [heck] out of walking through this door, pushing my werewolf over the edge. I wanted us to go together.’
There isn’t a lot of dark drama that many of this author’s books have. Instead, this is lighter, flirtier, a bit whimsical. That isn’t to say there isn’t any drama or conflict. There is something seriously wrong going on, but rather than consuming the story it helps to push it along. Of course when it all comes to a head, there is nothing fun and flirty about it.
I loved everything about this book, this hero and heroine as well as all the secondary characters. I hated having to set it aside when life demanded attention and at a less busy time I could have easily read this through in one sitting and then dug back in for a reread. It’s just that good! Easily my favorite by this author!
What a fun and steamy read.
When Werewolf Mateo, unable to shift into his wolf form, thinking he is cursed, finds hex-breaking Witch Evie and begs for help things get intriguing and you know you're in for a fun ride.
The internal conversations between Mateo and his inner wolf Alpha had me in hysterics, and the chemistry between Mateo and Evie, WOW!!!
I’ve read most of Juliette’s books since I first read her Vessel Trilogy, and Wolf Gone Wild did not disappoint. She has a way of drawing you into her stories that leaves you wanting more and I can not wait for the next book in the series.
Werewolfs, witches ,vampires and a zombie cat oh! My!!!!
Another fabulous read from Juliette cross and it's a twisty, snarky and full of awesome one liners with hot sexy paranormal male characters from Mateo who's a werewolf who's had a hex put on him so he can't shift to his wolf and is being drove crazy by Alpha his wolf spirt and all alpha cares about is fucking and fighting and of course he won't shut up for one moment!! Until Mateo goes to see evie a witch who breaks hex's! Mateo and evie along with her sisters have tried to help him break the curse but some very powerful witch has cast a blood spell !! It will take not only evie and her witch sisters, and a powerful vampire to find a book to break this curse and they don't even now who the witch is. This book had all juliette's trade Mark's from amazing writing to a great storyline to steamy lovemaking and hot sensuality!! It's set in New Orleans were their are many paranormal creatures and you never know what or who you might come across. The build between evie and Mateo is slow at first because Mateo is a loner like most wolf's he likes his own company. He doesn't get to close to any women for fear that they'll start asking questions on why he takes off for days on end,it's just easier this way, And ever since evie's break up with Derek the douche bag evie hasn't been with any other guys. Their becoming best friends and she's teaching him all about star wars and wolverine and comics, and their growing closer. Mateo wants evie but he's afraid of alpha taking over and him not being able to control him,but the fires building and soon neither will have a choice!!! And when alpha starts the ball in motion mateo can't control the beast any longer and the need to claim to his sweet little witch is now!! the time is well past stolen kisses and caresses its time to make her his!!!
Lots of foreplay and off the charts chemistry !!!! And the characters are awesome as well I loved both evie and Mateo she was sweet and sexy girl who loves starwars, wolverine and comics and Mateo is a artist who makes mythical metal sculptures . And then theirs secondary characters like evie's sister jule, violet and Clara who all have special talents who just as intriguing and then theirs a sexy gorgeous vampire Ruben Dubois who is the head of the southern vampires,he's so sexy!!! Can't wait for more of him!!! I highly recommend this book if you like a entertaining funny sexy read with fabulous one liners and plenty of snark to go around with passion and a sexy werewolve who's wolf spirt Alpha is a delicious dirty bad boy who just can't keep his thoughts to himself. Until next time luv's.💋💞
Actual rating: 4.5 stars.
Wolf Gone Wild is a sweet, fun, enchanting romp through New Orleans as shifters, vampires, witches, and other sorts of supernatural creatures go bump in the night.
Wolf Gone Wild is a departure from Ms Cross's usual intense, emotional reads but is a delight all of its own. If you're used to Ms Cross's previous books, you will find this quite different but equally enjoyable. The pacing is slower, with rich world building, a delicious build up of the relationship between Evie and Mateo, and fiercely passionate sexy times. You're going to love the pop culture references and if you're anything like me, you'll enjoy geeking out over Star Wars and comic books as well.
I love Mateo. He's alpha to the core with his wolf when its in charge but the man, Mateo, is sweet, kind, charming, creative, and beautiful. He's such a nice guy and so different from the persona of his wolf. Although, I have to admit, I love his wolf and how out of control and intense he is.
Evie is simply delightful. There is no other way to describe her. She's sweet, kind, fun, bubbly, effervescent, and simply a joy to be around. She's the perfect foil to draw Mateo out of his introverted self and to enjoy the world through her eyes.
Even though I found this story a little slow in some parts, I enjoyed the detail and richness of the characters and the depth Ms Cross delved into with them. I had to just set aside the adrenalin junkie in me and go with the flow. Everything happened in its own time and when the climax hit, it went off with a bang. I was suspecting everyone with every turn of the page trying to figure out who could be the big bad but Ms Cross played it close to her chest and the big reveal was a wonderful surprise. Nothing was what it seemed. What fun!
A great start to the new series and the new direction you're taking, Ms Cross. I can't wait for the next book.
I loved reading this book. The level of detail was great. The interplay between Alpha and Mateo made me laugh. I loved how Evie and Mateo fell in love and came to realize it, and how Alpha knew immediately that Evie was the one for him.
>Mateo hasn't been able to eat his wolf out to play, and Alpha is so restless. Somehow, they've gotten hexed. Enter Evie, his only chance of lifting the hex. One sexy and compassionate witch that makes Mateo and his wolf Alpha hot and bothered. What could go wrong?
I love the banter between Mateo and Alpha. Alpha lives inside Mateo's head and so it's safe to say that Mateo is in his own special kind of hell having that voice in his head, telling him to do all sorts of bad thing...
This book is equal parts funny and romantic. I liked Evie who was a strong female character both as a woman and as a witch. I liked her compassion and understanding. But the show stealer was Mateo/Alpha. This book is everything I hoped it would be, quirky and cute, romantic and sexy.
I also love love love all of Evie's family. Each witch is genuinely different. I liked how they bickered and loved each other. It reminded me of my family and my close friends. Only the ones you love know how to push your buttons.
The story is fast paced but don't get me wrong, the romance is front and center. And can we talk about the cover?? I don't know Juliette Cross but the cover gods have blessed you. It's a beautiful cover for this snarky and romanic paranormal romance. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.
I love a new series as it brings promises of more to come.
This brings the Witchy Savoire Sisters to us & focuses on Evie who meets up with Mateo the super sexy werewolf with a problem.
We get to meet the other sisters who all have different Witching strengths & sets up a number of potential future stories!
Mateo brings with him his wolf Alpha who has his own issues that Mateo has to battle but I really enjoy that we read Alpha’s point of view in addition to Evie & Mateo. Mateo was super sexy, Alpha was outrageous & Evie a darling but had great strengths she just needed to realise. The storyline was easy to follow & a lot of fun with the various banter throughout. This was a great first book which I can highly recommend & I can’t wait to see what happens with the other sisters.
I was lucky enough to be given an ARC in exchange for an easily given honest review.
**Disclaimer: I was given a free e-book in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley.**

Initial Thoughts
Ok, ok, ok. I fully admit that applying for a new book on NetGalley during crunch time was not my best idea. But this book looked so good! I had to apply. I had no idea that I’d be approved within the hour (but, I’m really glad I was!)
Some Things I Liked
NOLA. Yes, it’s a somewhat cliché setting for a book about witches, vampires, and werewolves. But, aren’t all clichés born of some truth? NOLA was the perfect setting here and, it wasn’t overbearing. I loved the subtle reminders of the city’s rich history without being IN YOUR FACE with references.
STAR. WARS. REFERENCES. Seriously, I can’t even. This is a book blog, so I don’t talk much about my deep, deep love of all things Star Wars, but it’s ever present in my life. I absolutely adored how much Evie loved the franchise, and I loved that Mateo found it so endearing.
Venom vibes. Venom was by no means an Oscar-worthy film. Hell, I probably wouldn’t have seen it if I wasn’t an AMC A-List member (and it was basically free), but, I did enjoy the Venom-style conversations that Mateo had with Alpha. I really enjoyed the banter between Mateo and Alpha as well as both of their interactions with Evie.
Series Value
I loved all of the minor characters in this book, especially Evie’s sisters. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the Savoie family (and I’m secretly hoping that it’s a Jules-centric story). I will absolutely continue with this series.
Final Thoughts
This might be a record for turnaround time on a NetGalley book for me. I was approved for this book this afternoon and it’s already read, reviewed, and submitted on NetGalley. I really loved it and it was such a fun read. I definitely plan on continuing with the series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Recommendations for Further Reading
The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith – if you liked the magic and curses elements in Wolf Gone Wild, give this book a try.
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness – if you liked the supernatural elements in this story, witches, demons, etc., give the All Souls trilogy a try.
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin – once again, if you liked the witches element, do yourself a favor and read this new release by Shelby Mahurin. It’s seasonal, perfect, and has multiple POVs.
This book was incredibly good, the humor, the romance and the plot was just a really fun read. Some parts i i just wanted to nudge the characters along a bit but thats usually how i know im invested. Really hoping the second in the series is about jules and ruben 🤞. Quick read with a HEA. Book kindly given as an ARC.
A witch not afraid to let her nerd flag fly and a werewolf under a terrible spell combine to make this fabulous paranormal rom com.

Set in sultry New Orleans, Wolf Gone Wild introduces readers to the Savoie sisters, a coven of very powerful and very helpful witches. Mateo, a cinnamon roll in an alpha male’s body, comes to the sisters for help breaking a devastating hex. From there, Juliette Cross spins a tale that is sweet, sexy, and sometimes very scary with a cast of new characters that delight and charm (just as witches should). I did not want this story to end, and I already can’t wait to dive back into this world!
Any story set in my favorite city of New Orleans is a win! This one doesn’t disappoint. Nothing better than witches and werewolves in one of the most haunted and beautiful cities in America. The ambiance of the setting and chemistry between the leading characters make this a 5 star romance read. Enjoy!
I’ve never read a werewolf romance, so I didn’t know what to expect, but this was SUPER fun. Even in the darkest moments, the conflict was external to the couple, who communicate about their feelings super well and consistently (which I love). Mateo was a total babe, and Evie and her awesome witch sisters were so cool. I absolutely adored the world building and I can’t wait for the rest of the series. This is perfect if you love: pop culture, witches, wolves, art—both sculptural and comic-based, sisterhood, bars that sound like a dream come true, steamy scenes, ancient cats, Louisiana, Star Wars, Thanksgiving dinner, growly heroes, hit lists, or love magic.
Enjoyed everything about this books! It's so hard to find a really good paranormal romance but, this one checked all my boxes. The chemistry between Evie and Mateo was so amazing. Loved that is was a somewhat slow burn romance. Also that we will get more books following the sisters.
Excellent read. Mateo, a werewolf, seeks out Evie, a witch, to break the hex surrounding Mateo that prevents him from shifting into his wolf. A bit of a different take on werewolfs as Mateo isn't part of a pack and isn't ostracized for being a 'lone wolf'.
Mateo and his wolf, Alpha, have these conversations in Mateo's head as Mateo is living his daily life. The writing between the too is funny and highlights the inner turmoil Mateo has as it is not normal to have this type of ongoing discussion. The relationship between Mateo and Evie is a slow building, slow burning one. Alpha has decided that he wants Evie and is constantly pushing Mateo to make his move. Mateo is concerned that Alpha will be too aggressive and hurt Evie.
Evie has an epiphany about her feelings for Mateo. "Even in jeans, I could feel the heat of him, the magnetic pull of his touch, of his gaze, of his body, of his mind, heart, and soul. It was true. He'd caught me. Reeled me in with kind words and soft touches and hard kisses. And it wasn't enough. I wanted more. I wanted it all. I wanted everything." Awesome imagery of how Evie feels for Mateo, a dominant guy with a sweet side.
"Then I spotted the devastatingly fine man walking across the room straight toward me, and I knew why. Not just a man, a werewolf among witches. My werewolf. And sweet baby Jesus in a basket, Mateo in an all-black, well-tailored suit, striding through the parlor with prupose, his beautiful face set in a dangerous express as it flicked to Derek behind me." The writing is so descriptive, without going overboard, that I can picture this scene perfectly in my mind.
Of course Mateo and Evie get their HEA. A bit of a twist to discover how the hex/curse and unwinding of it occurs. There's also some foreshadowing for likely pairings of Evie's sisters in future books.
Bummer that this is the first in a series so that there's nothing for me to pick up to read. Definitely will be on the 'authors to watch' list.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
5 stars!
Wolf Gone Wild is a refreshing departure from the oftentimes dark and angsty paranormal romances set in New Orleans. Evie - a comic-crazed, hex-breaking witch - and Mateo - an artist wolf-shifter and loner - made a unique pair, especially with the addition of Mateo's wolf - Alpha.
Something is blocking Mateo from going furry once a month which causes his inner wolf to invade his everyday thoughts. So much so, that he fears Alpha taking over completely! Mateo seeks the help of a renowned hex-breaker and member of the Savoie witch coven - the ruling entity of New Orleans.
I love a good nerdy heroine, and Evie is so charmingly obsessed with Marvel and Star Wars - so many references to pop culture. Their budding relationship and Evie's bubbly influence on the broody werewolf were delightful, but it's Alpha who really steals the show.
Mateo's inner wolf is hilariously primal - thinking in terms of kill or be killed, and lusting so hard after Evie that it's driving Mateo insane. Every interaction between Mateo and Alpha is gold and I couldn't get enough of them.
Wolf Gone Wild is book one of the Stay a Spell series and sets up the world nicely for future installments. There's definitely a few teased relationships simmering in the background. I can't wait to see which of the Savoie sisters is next!
Wolf Gone Wild is the first book in the new Stay A Spell series by Juliette Cross and a story I was eager to read after a sneek peek of Evie &Mateo in the Bewitch You a Merry Christmas story from the Christmas After Dark anthology.
I took to Evie instantly, which doesn't happen often to me, with female lead characters. She's caring and determined as well as having a nerdy side that matches my own. We bonded over our StarWars/Marvel love lol.
Ah Mateo, my heart went out to him completely, years of reading shifter based pnr has given me the knowledge of how dangerous & destructive being unable to shift can be, but adding in a black magic cause, took his torment to a whole new level.
I really enjoyed the fact that Alpha is so upfront & present in Mateo's life, that was new to me and I loved their interactions and conversations. I'm so glad Alpha doesn't fade completely at the end of this story. He's become an important character in his own right for me.
I'm now looking forward to seeing where this series goes as it progresses. I want to know more about the Savoie sister witches and hopefully catch up with Evie and Mateo along the way.
Juliette Cross, you've caught me with this series :)
Wolf Gone Wild by author Juliette Cross was an entertaining read that kept the smiles and intrigue flowing from start to finish. Evie's character was a stand out, and equally the secondary characters of her sisters. The smoulderingly troubled Mateo did not disappoint either. I cannot wait for the author to write more books in the series. Wolf Gone Wild was an unmissable beginning to what is sure to be entertaining reading in the Stay a Spell series from Ms Cross.
Review copy received from the Publisher via Netgalley
“A big, bad werewolf just blew me a kiss. That was the sexiest and cutest thing I’d ever seen” -Wolf Gone Wild
LitBuzz Readers: this is a shifter book I can whole-heartedly recommend to you! Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross is the first book in the Stay a Spell series and is the fun, funny, fast-paced paranormal shifter and witchy romance that will leave you howling for more!
Evie Savoie is known as the Hex-Breaker in her family, a coven of witches who live in paranormal-centric quarter of New Orleans. A hopeless fixer, she wants to help all who cross her path, even a mysterious werewolf despite her eldest sister’s steadfast rule of absolutely no werewolves. Mateo Cruz is desperate to find relief: from the agony of not being able to shift during the last two full moons, and from the constant verbal diarrhea that his Wolf leaves ringing in his head. When Mateo learns that Evie is a renowned hex-breaker, he stops at nothing to convince her to help him. It doesn’t hurt that Evie’s mere presence quells his Wolf’s chatter, but Evie also ignites a hunger within both Mateo and his Wolf, Alpha.
This is no ordinary shifter romance, bookworms. I devoured Wolf Gone Wild because I was enthralled not only by the witty banter of the characters, but also because of the steamy chemistry between Evie and Mateo, as well as Evie and Alpha. Wolf Gone Wild was a new dynamic for me. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how both Evie and Mateo managed their obvious budding feelings for each other while simultaneously trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the reason why Mateo is unable to shift. A surprising theme that plays throughout the entire story is being true to oneself, as well as a hefty appreciation of art and fandoms such as Star Wars. If you throw a solid nod to a Star Wars fan like myself, you know I’m going to love it.
Juliette Cross also gives little sprinkles of hints of books to come. Getting to know Evie’s sisters and extended family is part of the lush and magical world of the Stay a Spell series. I loved Wolf Gone Wild and I absolutely cannot wait for Book 2, which is due to be out later this Fall.
