Description
Words that imitate sounds are known as onomatopoeia, and they are a wonderfully strange and interesting part of language. After all, we all hear the same sounds, but we interpret and write them differently in different languages. Sounds All Around is a fun and funny illustrated guide to how people say many of these sounds all around the globe. Inside you’ll learn what a cat sounds like in French, what a yawn sounds like in Norwegian, what a bell sounds like in Hindi, and much, much more!

A charming book teaching kids all about different sounds from across the world. I loved the diversity of the art and the use of many languages, not just common or popular ones. The text was comprehensive and I think parents will really like this one, and so will kids.
We talk about this often with our students. Love this book so much. Will definitely be buying this one for our library!
This comic-like compilation of sounds around the world is just plain fun! I can absolutely see a group of kids sitting around and trying out all the different onomatopoeia from around the world and having a great time. I will absolutely be purchasing this for the juvenile nonfiction collection at my library!
Language is weird. We think we understand how things are supposed to sound, at least in the natural world, and shouldn't they all sound exactly the same to all people?
Well, the quick answer is that, other than the sound that cats make, which most of the world agrees sounds a bit like "meow" most other sounds are wildly heard as different things, such as dogs going "ham" instead of bark, in Romanian.

A fun picture book to thumb through, and see how other people in other countries hear the sounds that we all think are the same. Sometimes the sounds that they use make more sense then those that we have learned to use in English. "Cocoriquo" sounds more like the sound a rooster makes then "Cockadoodledo".
Fun book for adults and children to pour over and laugh or discuss.

#Funway to introduce #diversity and start a serious discussion about learning other #languages. An excellent book covering many aspects of communication from many parts of the world. The author provides the onomatopoeia of daily sounds providing a wonderful window for the kids around the world. This title will be enjoyed by the families as well. Excellent title for a diverse classroom. Teacher can use this to draw out all the kids in the class to participate using colors, flowers, sports, or equipment such as ball etc. Great opportunity for parents to interact with kids and for kids to interact with elderly relatives or friends. Highly recommended.
