Description
In the revised edition of this groundbreaking book, noted author and theologian Linda Seger, Th.D., explores what it means to be a Christian and a Democrat - and shows how the two are not mutually exclusive but rather inclusive. She reveals the close relationship between Democratic policy and Jesus' teachings and the many ways in which the values Jesus espouses in the Bible correspond to the values Democrats call their own. The idea that America's real Christians vote strictly Republican crumbles when one studies the platforms of both parties. Jesus Rode a Donkey reminds the reader that Jesus and the prophets had a radical, progressive message that calls individuals and nations to feed the hungry, help the poor, heal the sick, care for the earth, free the oppressed, and love our enemies. The book won the Silver Medal Christian Living Illumination Book Award given for exemplary Christian writing.
Advance Praise
In this urgent call for a politics of compassion and peace, Linda Seger argues that Christian morality is more compatible with the ideals of Democrats than Republicans. She combines moral exhortation, biblical teachings, and her spiritual intuitions as a Quaker to defend her belief that the "greatest litmus test" of governmental policies is treatment of the poor and oppressed--and she demonstrates that Republican priorities in general, and actions of President Trump in particular, fail that test. At a time when Republicans claim to be the party of Christian faith, Jesus Rode a Donkey makes a persuasive case for "why millions of Christians are Democrats."
- Dr. David L. Weddle, Professor Emeritus of Religion, Colorado College
At a time of division and despair, Linda Seger reminds us of essential human values shared by all: humanity, respect and ensuring a better, safer world for our children. This book builds a bridge for people with different political and religious beliefs.
-Congressman Steve Israel (2001-2017)
If you are one of the many Christians who are now questioning your political allegiance to the Republican party in the age of Trump, wondering if it is possible to be a Christian and a Democrat, this book is for you. Likewise, if you are one of the millions of Christians who are Democrats and have been judged by your peers, need validation, or looking for scripturally based arguments on the most pressing political and social issues today, this book is also for you. Dr. Seger's solid, well-written and scripturally sound guide helped me form the platform of Christian Democrats of America, and has borne fruit in thousands of lives. I highly recommend for all believers, whether you are political or not -- read and be informed at this critical time in the church and our nation's history.
- Christina Forrester, Founder and Executive Director of Christian Democrats of America
You do not have to be a Republican to be a good Christian. Dr. Seger's excellent book helps make it clear that there are several strategic Biblical issues in America that are better addressed by Democrats. In the bright light of Scripture, many of us evangelicals, committed to its authority, truly dislike the forced dilemma between being a grieving Democrat or a frustrated Republican. Perhaps, as Dr. Seger reminds us, Jesus rode a donkey once, and his commands may become more clearly seen in the choices the present donkey makes for our future. Engaging some of the divine wisdom of this book could help make that happen.
-Paul de Vries, Ph.D., President, New York Divinity School
Linda Seger shows us a Christianity that overcomes divisions of liberal and conservative. But she also makes clear how liberal values are deeply rooted in the gospel message. Liberals need not think that their values are somehow less religious or Biblical than those of conservative Republicans. Seger does trenchant analyses of the conflicting values underlying conservative and liberal policy choices and asks which are closer to the values of Jesus, values rooted in love, compassion, and justice. This is an important book for this time in American life.
-Rosemary Radford Ruether, Ph.D., Professor of Theology, Claremont Graduate University and Claremont School of Theology, and author of Sexism and God-Talk and Integrating Ecofeminism, Globalization, and World Religions
A magnificent piece of work. This is one of the best evidences of scholarship, thoughtfulness, clarity, and strength. It's a winner!
-The Right Reverend Bennett J. Sims, Bishop Emeritus, Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, and author of Servanthood: Leadership for the Third Millennium
This is a work of immense depth, wisdom, and subtlety. Everyone, regardless or religious or political persuasion, will be inspired by the riches offered here.
-Jean Houston, Philosopher, social artist, teacher, and author of The Search for the Beloved and The Possible Human
