Description
In a post-apocalypse world besieged by monsters, Colonel Xavier, a strict military man with a deadly temper, challenges Maat Ferris, a fierce, werewolf hunter, in a way she doesn't understand. When Xavier meets Maat, he can't decide whether to shoot her or kiss her. There is no uncertainty in her. She promptly stabs him. His hot then cold attitude makes her crazy, and his tendency to protect her is even worse.
Unfortunately, the combative pair must join forces on a treacherous journey, across the bleak, barren country. Pursued by a dictator president and the vampire who holds him in thrall, they carry precious cargo that will give democracy seeking rebels a chance to remain free.
Maat and Xavier, true to their aggressive, passionate natures, must also battle their way through a most unusual courtship. Can their love grow amidst the destruction and rebuilding of a society under siege? Or will they kill each other first?

World War III is over, werewolves and vampires attacked soon after. Much of modern technology has been lost. This dystopian world is the setting for Huntress Rising.
Maat is a bounty/werewolf hunter. She gets caught up in adventure taking her from New Washington to the Midwest.
Roland writes a very well fleshed out dystopian world. Her rich descriptions made her world building very realistic. It had a very Wild West meets Mad Max feel to it. With gun fights, hidden plots and angsty romance, this book had it all.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Huntress Rising is the first in a new series. It takes place in a violent post-apocalyptic world where werewolves and vampires have come out of the closet. The United States are no longer united and it’s everyone for themselves. Our heroine is a werewolf hunter extraordinaire who has been ripped from her home and drawn into the morass of politics in this new world. This is a complex tale that keeps you riveted. I look forward to seeing where the author takes us next.
What an intense rollercoaster of a read! I fell into the story and didn't want it to end. Maat is a badass with a little extra sense that helps her stay alive. The world building is great. I enjoyed it start to finish.
HUNTRESS RISING by Lee Roland is the first book in the Angel of Death paranormal post-apocalyptic action thriller. The world has changed after both World War III and a plague with much of today’s technology has been lost in 2085. However, new dangers have appeared in the form of werewolves and vampires. Maat Ferris has been hunting and killing werewolves since she was a teenager and werewolves call her Suriel, Angel of Death. While she has been living quietly for a couple of years, that is about to change. When she meets Colonel Xavier, her quiet live comes to an end and the action starts. Maat is one of the strongest female protagonists that I have encountered lately. Xavier is aggressive and has a deadly temper. When they end up having to work together, will either survive?
The main characters are compelling and definitely someone you can root for. They have depth and distinct flaws and virtues. Their goals are clear and proactive. The writing was absorbing, fascinating, and impactful. The world-building is fantastic. The plot was engrossing, moving, powerful and suspenseful. The ending was dramatic and action filled with a satisfying resolution, but plenty of threads to pull for the next book in the series.
Overall, this was an intriguing and heart-pounding book with a bit of romance, a lot of violence, and some thought-provoking concepts. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. If you like exciting and gripping post-apocalyptic action thrillers with a strong female protagonist, then this could be the next series for you.
Many thanks to Backlit PR - The Wild Rose Press, Inc. and Lee Roland for a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley and the opportunity to provide an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.
Maat is a killer. She learned to hunt werewolves that slaughtered humans in her post-apocalyptic world, When the vice president of what's left of the united states, arrives in her small agricultural community, Maat is sure that they are there to kill her. In fact, they are there to recruit her for a mission she doesn't want. Maat's about to discover that the world is not quite what she thought it was, that not all shifters slaughter humans and that there are people out there who might just rival her skills.
This was an interesting book with nontraditional characters set in a post-apocalyptic world like I have never seen.
Maat is far from the traditional urban fantasy heroine. The shapeshifters call her Suriel, and believe her to be an angel of death. Maat survives the horrors of her world then returns to kill everyone who harms her. She does what she does because no one else can do it.
Xavier is not a hero either. He's cold, focused and prone to violence. His relationship with Maat swings between them physically fighting one another to moment of him caring for her. He's contradictory, stubborn and while all the side characters talk about how well he and Maat pair, she doesn't see it.
Ty is a ray of sunshine through the whole book - young, idealistic with more intelligence than he lets on.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was an intense, rollercoaster of a paranormal romance. Maat is a paranormal hunter whose intense need for violence and revenge leads her to constant life of life and death situations. I loved how bad ass she was but her constant need to kill every werewolf she meets eventually made her too blood thirsty. Her complex feelings and violent interactions with Xavier are just as turbulent and disturbing since they're supposed to be in love.
Overall, it was a well written novel with an interesting plot and worth reading. Just beware if you're sensitive to abuse and violence this novel is heavy with it.
Huntress Rising takes place in a future post apocalyptic United States. The population has been decimated, and werewolves and vampires have come out of hiding. Maat is a werewolf hunter, whose skill has earned her the name "Angel of Death" among the surviving werewolves. Xavier is a military man and skilled fighter. They find themselves in a struggle against evil forces that seek to destroy them.
This is an excellent book. The characters are well developed, and the plot is action packed, taking you from one dangerous situation to another. The take on werewolves is interesting, and the werewolf Sabrina is a fascinating character who I hope to see again. The vampires are truly complex and frightening. Maat is a tough and seasoned fighter, but she also loves those close to her fiercely, and that gives her a softer side. I like that nobody in this book is perfect. Even the "good guys" are flawed, just as in real life. I eagerly look forward to the next book in this series.
I you enjoy post apocalyptic fiction, dystopian fiction, fiction about mythical creatures, and strong female characters, you will love this book.
I received a free copy of this book from Wild Rose Press via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.
I love books set in 'post-apocalyptic ' , urban fantasy worlds - especially those that give rise to werewolves and vampires .
Maat is a Werewolf hunter , one of the best , earning her the title of Angel of Death .
But all is not as it seems and when the Vice President visits her community rather than kill her , as she expects , she finds he is here to recruit her for a mission she does not want .
Maat finds that not all werewolves are killers and that she just might have competition for her title as there are others with her skills .
Her interactions with Colonel Xavier swing from physical fights to caring for each other ….. which will win through ?
This was an interesting book with complex characters , great worldbuilding and a fast paced strong storyline …. I look forward to more in the future .
I was given an arc of this book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review .
This was not your usual paranormal romance, it was more a dystopian fantasy set in an post apocalyptic world, focused around a werewolf hunter and mercenary Maat Ferris, named after an Eptian goddess, Maat witnessed her family being torn to pieces by werewolves, and trained by her ex- military uncle as a child, she is an accomplished monster hunter, with a sixth sense that means she knows if there are werewolves in the vicinity. She is kidnapped by the government to take part in a secret mission, and she manages to provoke and attract the super strict Chief of security Colonel Xavier, with a wicked and deadly temper..
The book tells the story of their very dangerous mission, capturing and diverting a cache of explosives to thwart the strategy of their country’s dictator, and the Vampire who is manipulating him.
The story was gripping with lots of action, and great backstory information on mainly Maat, but also Xavier and the young Max. Maat is very loyal, Especially to the head of the commune from which she was captured, Aniola,. She is loving, but very fierce, and. a proper take no prisoners sort of character. She was a great read.
The romance in definitely a secondary strand in this book, and it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I really enjoyed the book, and would like to know a bit more about Xavier, I also hope we see the evolution of the relationship between Maat and Xavier.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
This is a great book it very fast paced and intense! The story grabs you right from the beginning and the world-building is very good! I loved the MC Maat she is tough and fierce with street-smarts so overall pretty solid as the heroine.
I love the dystopian story-line. The richly detailed world-building really brings the story alive and I can fully imagine the landscape. Maat is a bit vengeful and violent so her relationships are really ingrained with that and I hope to see her grow and find a better balance with her friends and her relationship with Xavier is volatile and a bit contradictory because they fight each other almost as much as the enemies. However, Xavier has a lot of growing to do he is very cold and calculating at times and they have not found a good cohesive balance yet so he kind of comes off poorly at times and isn't fully on the hero bandwagon yet.
I look forward to seeing character growth as the series moves forward.

What happens when a we’re hunter, meets a warrior. When Maat is forced to fight or be taken. She loses to a big brute named Xavier! This story is about how these two come together in a love/hate relationship to fight for their right to live! Good storyline, a kept me reading to see what happens next book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
An Enemies to Lovers storyline here, set in a post apocalyptic world with paranormal characters interacting and falling in love across species.
The Huntress has been on 'vacation' - in that she has been living quietly for some 2 years without using her weapons. and then there is a werewolf hunter 'cos werewolves eat sheep - and the farmers aren't pleased. And the Huntress can also hunt vampires - but would really rather not. But her skills are needed by the Govt even though she has tried to retire after her last vampire experience.
And then the Govt bring along Xavier - her downfall - her enemy or was he?
Nice story as these post apocalyptic stories go. Lots of death and destruction, before and after and continuing.
But not a series I wish to continue with as it didn't grab me enough.
