Description

An eleven-year-old boy discovers that the infant born in his backyard is no ordinary child. - Bethlehem, Year O -

Andrew starves for the affection of his father, a man who seeks his treasures, not in family, but in the amount of gold coins that fills his purse. The census has come to Bethlehem and Andrew has once again lost his father to his work. If the price of running an inn leaves no time to love one's family, Andrew is determined not to follow in his father's footsteps. After a young couple moves into their stable, Andrew's father resents the time Joseph spends with his son and demands Joseph concentrate on raising his own newborn son. Eight months later when Joseph's family departs for Egypt, they leave behind a Bethlehem changed by faith and a father who will give up everything for the love of God and family.

New light on an old story, July 15, 2012

By Reed Enwright - See all my reviews This review is from: Andrew's Gift and the Untold Miracles in Bethlehem (Paperback)

One of my favorite ways to learn more about history - a subject which, I regret, bored me in school - is through fiction. To read the story of a cast of characters living through a war, for example, is much more interesting to me than reading facts and figures about battles, generals, and world politics. Biblical fiction is new to me but this book, "Andrew's Gift," drew me right into the days, events, and characters surrounding the birth of Jesus. As a story-teller, Ms. Williams is a natural; gifted and skilled at her craft.

Andrew and his family & friends immediately come to life and the reader is quickly enthralled, easily visualizing their day to day life. The voice and use of language is elegant and consistent and helps set the tone, never jarring the reader with anachronisms. The characters are funny, endearing, evil when they are supposed to be, saintly when they're meant to be, and believable in every instance. Even the animals develop "personalities" and play their own unique roles. This book will entertain people of all ages regardless of any religious beliefs or lack thereof. It's just plain good story-telling.
