I find this story really funny. For kids, I think, they'll enjoy reading it. Most scenes don't make sense but as a children's book, I think, it will just come out fine.
Annalynn the Canadian Spy: Terrible Tissues by Shawn Robinson is a slightly wacky and 100% fun Canadian mystery! This early chapter book for age 7+ is a welcome taste of home for Canadians living in the UK!
10-year-old Annalynn is just going about her everyday life and trying to look after her poorly family when, suddenly, blue and red clad strangers race into the house and steal their only box of tissues. The story becomes even more unusual when Agent Rick from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (real spies) arrives to recruit Annalynn to their team. The fate of the world is in her hands and she must do all she can to save the day (or at least the box of tissues)!
So much of this story is reminiscent of the great Canadian author Robert Munsch and his silly stories. From Dr. L. Secord, the director of Cool Gadgets and Spy Missions, to Annalynn learning to fly a jet plane, it is one unbelievable development after another. The book finishes off with interesting lists of weird Canadian facts and laws.
As a Canadian myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the references to hockey, a moose and maple syrup. I found myself laughing out loud and wondering just what was coming next! I’ll be watching out for book two to find out what Annalynn gets up to next!
Thank you to Net Galley, BooksGoSocial and Shawn Robinson for this fun book!
A funny spy adventure with plenty of mishaps, misunderstandings and Canadian references! Enough to remind my why I love my home country so much. With plenty of Moose, maple syrup and hockey knowledge spread throughout it is a fun book to read.
Annalynn's family are all sick and there is one box of tissues left. When a masked gang steal the tissues, Annalynn is sent to become a CSIS spy and sent to Oslo to retrieve the box of tissues. A wacky adventure follows with a backwards flying jet, an inflatable disguise and the realisation that the tissues stolen were not the last in the world as previously thought- in fact all the stores have them.
There are some laugh out loud moments and some shake your head moments but all in all, this will delight its young readers.
