Love is...

What is love?  Is it that feeling one has when something pleasant happens? Is it the exhilaration one feels in the excitement of the moment? We often say, “Love you!” at the end of a conversation. What do we really mean when that is said?When Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God and the second greatest is to love our neighbor, He was not talking about what we like because it gives us pleasure. He was talking about something far deeper and more important.  He was talking about one’s willingness to sacrifice self-pleasure for the benefit of others. This love demands commitment. God’s love requires understanding of the feelings of others.Pat Lamb has compiled stories that are examples of Biblical love—the love that results in actions for positive effects on others. It tells of those who truly understood love’s real meaning and were willing to make efforts to show that love.  You may find yourself saying, “I can’t believe anyone would do that!” However, the stories are true.The more we understand God’s love for us, the more we are willing to show love to others. It is loving God more than anything else and our neighbor as ourself…and demonstrating that love in our daily walk. Pat Lamb has spent most of her life teaching both in churches and public schools. She and her husband worked with Native Americans during the late 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. Later she taught GED classes for more than 20 years in Southwest Missouri and was awarded the Missouri Distinguished Adult Basic Education Service Award. She has also written Let the Children Come; Children, Come to Me; When the Stars Fall Down; Widening the Church Doors to Teach the Narrow Way; and My Thinking Book. She currently writes columns for local newspapers and the Missouri Pathway.
