Rescued by a Highlander is the story of Jillian, a woman who will do whatever it takes to protect her father, even marry a complete stranger. When Gawain first encounters a young boy and older man in the woods of his land, he doesn’t realize that the young man is, in fact, a woman in boy’s clothing. He’s intrigued by this mysterious woman and her father. What brought them to near exhaustion and starvation on his lands, and can he convince them to stay?
Jillian and her father fled their land after Jillian’s nefarious relative revealed unsavory and threatening plans for their future. Jillian knows that marrying Gawain will protect her and her father, but she doesn’t expect to fall for her new husband.
Jillian is a likable and tolerant protagonist. Faced with many difficult situations, Jillian always makes the best of her circumstances and acts with grace and understanding. I also like her curious nature. She is not satisfied taking care of the castle and desires more in life. She enjoys exploring and fighting, which is considered inappropriate for women. I like her determination and unwillingness to give up her individuality. However, she does, at times, seem to give in easily to the men in her life, which felt contrary to and uncharacteristic of her independent spirit. I wish these conflicting parts of her personality were developed more.
The plot is interesting with small conflicts throughout the story that lead up to the larger conflict of Jillian’s cousin. I was a bit disappointed in the quick resolution, however. It felt like a big buildup to a climax that fell a bit flat for me. That being said, the story had a nice resolution and wrapped up well.
Rescued by a Highlander will appeal to readers who enjoy historical romance with an independent and spirited protagonist and a lovely romance. Thanks so much to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. This book is about Jillian who catches the attention of Laird MacGregor. I enjoyed this lightheaded tale.
A story, a life, a young woman ..... a woman in a male world, how to fight when the weapons were taken away before the battle started? How to obtain what she wants when she is imprisoned in a dead end, with no choices remaining? How to love when someone else decides who she should love and how to live?
Brave, determined, strong ..... she pushes the boundaries of everything, of her being in order to be able to save her father, she puts her own life at stake for the salvation of the parent, the parent who without even asking her, hands her over to the hands of the man who can solve all their problems. The man who makes her his in the eyes of everyone, without even thinking what she wants, what she desires. And how can she love? How to indulge? Is he her executioner or her savior, her hero? A handsome, brave, and powerful enough to give her the much-needed protection, but is that enough? He leads her into the waters of belonging and passion, the taste of bodily love, but is that enough to accept his rules?
If you love the stories about the mighty Highlanders, this is definitely one that will manage to interest and intrigue you. However, what I definitely missed was the very idea and description of the Highlander, without bare chests, tartans and kilts, without the power and tenderness to protect his own, this story simply failed to grasp the magic of the stories about Highlands.
Susan Payne is an author new to this reader. I requested "Rescued by a Highlander" as I thought the story by the description seemed interesting and worth the read. It is a story of Jillian who is raised by her father in the world owned by men. She and her father are on the run, hoping to escape a cruel relative that wishes to have control over her father's estate and her. Enters Laird MacGreagor who works out a deal with her father to wed her and keep them protected and safe.
Although this was an interested read, I did find it quite slow. The characters are likable, although the heroine comes off a bit strong but again likable. There are some hit or miss places in the plot of the story and in the end it fell a little short for this reader.
Thank you Netgalley and The Wild Rose Press, Inc. for this ARC for a fair and honest review.
Jillian and her father are escaping her evil cousin who has taken over her father's castle in Scotland and plans to force Jillian into marriage when they are rescued by Gawain, a Scottish laird. Jillian was raised by her father after her mother died to be more independent, wearing men's clothes and learning how to fight.
I liked the premise of this novel, so I requested to review it on Netgalley, but the story fell a bit flat at times. There are pages and pages of descriptions, but not a lot of dialogue. Sometimes, it didn't feel like they were in Scotland, because there wasn't a single description of a man wearing a kilt even though the book is set before the Jacobite rebellion when wearing the kilt became outlawed. It reads like an old-fashioned novel, so if readers like that type of book, then I think they would enjoy it.
A honest review was given in exchange for receiving a copy of the ARC on Netgalley.
An interesting story to read set in Scotland. There was a good storyline and characters that were brave. I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to be read if you like historical novels
Jillian, a female who fights to save her father and their way of life.
Gawain, a highlander who comes across Jillian and her father while they are fleeing.
Gawain and Jillian's first meeting could have ended in disaster because Jillian was dressed as a male because she and her father where fleeing a cousin who was taking over his estate. Once Gawain realizes the "young boy" is really a girl, he decides to take them back to his castle and help them.
When Jillian's father and Gawain make the decision that Jillian and Gawain should marry, Jillian must decide whether to trust her heart and change her future.
The two main characters of Gawain and Jillian were fairly likeable, but the story moved a little slow and it took time to get to the final decisions.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for my honest review.
A great plot.
I understood the plot and appreciate it's feminist spirit.
I, however, think it was entirely too predictable. The writing was a little broken, such that it reduced the intrigue of the plot.
I think the author could use a little more intrigue and work on the 3rd man narrating.
This was well written but there was not much of a plot. There was a lot of buildup to absolutely nothing, which was a real bummer.
Jillian is rescued by Gawain...but she's determined to take her ill father to England to get the King's help. I don't write spoilers, but know that the development of these characters is great. They are both such strong people, both caring people. The secondary cast of characters were interesting and I found myself sad when I read "the end."
This books was given to me by netgalley as an arc in return for my honest review.
Jillian disguises herself as man and is on the run with her father. They are hiding from a nefarious relative who has his own evil plans installed for their future. They enter Gawains lands tired, drained, and hungry. Gawain is intrigued with Jillian once he finds out she is a woman in mans clothing.
In this book you witness the unconditional love between child and father. She is willing to do anything to protect her father including marriage to a complete stranger. Gawain offers marriage in return for his protection. What Jillian and Gawain didn't expect was to fall deeply in love.
The story started off slow but soon after it quickly caught my attention. This was a beautiful love story, and I was not let down.
