Description
We think we have to push our kids to do more, achieve more, BE more. But we’re modeling the wrong traits—like rule-following and caution—and research shows it’s NOT working. This kind of “Striver” mindset isn’t just making kids unhappier, says Dr. Michele Borba…it’s actually the opposite of what it takes to thrive in the uncertain world ahead.
Thrivers are different: they flourish in our fast-paced, digital-driven, often uncertain world. Why? Through her in-depth research, Dr. Borba discovered that the difference comes down not to grades or test scores, but to seven character traits that set Thrivers apart—confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism. The even better news: these traits can be taught to children at any age…in fact, parents and educations must do so.
In Thrivers, Dr. Borba offers practical, actionable ways to develop these traits in children from preschool through high school, showing how to teach kids how to cope today so they can thrive tomorrow.

Yes - read it. As a home ec major I had chosen to put my education to use to review parenting books only to simply be extremely disappointed in how the books were written as well as the content. This book was different. Less then 15% into the book, I knew I was impressed with the directness and very helpful content.
"Self-confidence + perseverance + curiosity + self-control + integrity + empathy + optimism" The secret formula for developing human beings who thrive at successful living.
Notice how GPA and sport statistics are not part of that equation. Yet we live in a society that focuses and devotes a LOT of time, energy and money on just those two things. And we have a LOT of unhappy children because of it.
This idea is something the author points out in numerous examples throughout the book. If your child doesn't fit into the categories of brain or jock, that doesn't mean they can't thrive and have an immensely successful life.
All parts of the "thrive" equation are discussed in the book. Short background/reasoning section, why that "ingredient" is hard to teach and then some ideas on how to build that in your child that is age appropriate.
I thought the author did a wonderful job breaking down some very intangible topics into thought provoking commentary and useful tools.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam to help me prepare for my honest review.
