Description

In WELCOME TO SMELLVILLE, Goosebumps creator R. L. Stine teams up with the pop-culture phenomenon Garbage Pail Kids for a first-ever GPK middle-grade series.

WELCOME TO SMELLVILLE will release as an audiobook from Blackstone Publishing on September 29, 2020, and will be brought to life with an outstanding cast starring Jordan Fisher as Adam Bomb, Dascha Polanco as Babbling Brooke, Joniece Abbot-Pratt as Brainy Janey, James Murray as The Mighty Hairball,  Ramon de Ocampo as Cranky Frankie, Andrew Eiden as Luke Puke, Bradford Hastings as Junkfood John, Kirby Heyborne as Nervous Rex, and Jim Meskimen as Coach Swettypants.

Meet the Garbage Pail Kids—Adam Bomb, Babbling Brooke, Brainy Janey, Cranky Frankie, Handy Sandy, Junkfood John, Luke Puke, Nervous Rex, Rob Slob, and Wacky Jackie. You may think they’re gross and weird and slobby and strange, but they’re not bad kids—they just don’t know any better.

Even though they all live together in one big tumbledown house and have as much fun as they can while trying to survive Smellville Middle School, they are pretty “normal” kids. Except when compared to Peter and Patty Perfect, who are just, well … perfect. (Perfectly annoying, that is.)

When the Perfects’ mom and dad, Penny and Parker Perfect, show up to prove the Garbage Pail Kids are living without any parents, the kids need to act fast. Will they be able to find their own pair of perfect parents in time?

Join bestselling author R. L. Stine, creator of Goosebumps, for the first book in this perfectly disgusting new series.

Smellville is most known for creating the garbage pail. They even have a monument to the Unknown Sanitation Worker. Just like any small town, it has its bunch of rambunctious kids that like to get in to trouble.
Those kids are The Garbage Pail Kids. Luke Puke, Adam Bomb, Cranky Frankie, and the other six kids who live with them, just want to have extremely loud and messy fun, all of the time.

Topps created The Garbage Pail Kids from 1985 to 1988, as a way to poke fun at the then popular Cabbage Patch Kids. My parents considered me too young to collect the cards ( I was 5), so i was forced to admire my cousins collection. The images of oozy boogers, rotten teeth, exploding brains pulled me in and made me so jealous that I couldn't have any cards of my own.
Now as an adult, I found myself pulled in again when I saw that the gang is back and in a book. Welcome To Smellville is geared towards middle graders, but that didn't stop me from requesting it. I chose to read the book as an audiobook, knowing that it wouldn't be as magical as the actual picture book. I was really curious to see what R L Stine would do with the kids on audio. Turns out there is a full cast for about 6 characters. Each voice brought the kids to life in a way I never thought possible when I was 5. Complete with gross sound effects and disgusting imagery, I'd say they got the job done.
The book was laugh out loud funny at times, even for an adult. I can definitely see how the book would appeal to middle graders, or younger. Every kid loves food fights, tongue twisters, and mayhem. The icing on the cake is the boogers and poop mentioned continously throughout the story.

The master of middle school thrills, R L Stine is the perfect writer to bring the kids back. I will be buying a copy of the book for my cousin immediately.

What a wonderful collaboration - two icons of the 80’s, the author of kids horror R.L. stone and the Garbage Pail Kids! This was entertaining and of course gross lol. The kids get into mischief at school all while battling the bully twins. I received this copy on audio, the different narrators were awesome! Thank you to NetGalley and Amulet Books for a gifted ARC. This is my honest review.

Thanks so much for this audiobook.

This was such a fun, cute, and gross (in a good way) audiobook to listen to. The perfect story for a middle school kid.

The narrator was great and there were noises playing in the background to go along with the scenes. It felt as if I were watching a movie! I loved this one so much I bought a copy for my 9 year old cousin for her birthday this weekend. I think she will get a kick out of it!

I feel like such a kid again. This was in part due to RL Stine being the perfect person to make this story happen. Having multiple audio-narrators also really helped to enhance this story.

While listening to this audiobook as a 40+ yr old adult, I also had my 9 year old along for the fun. I not only wanted her opinion on this kids book, but wanted to share some of my fondest memories of childhood = us 80s kids LOVED trading the Garbage Pail kids cards and watching the cartoons. The grosser, the better. Staying within that same genre, this new RL Stine version does not disappoint.
From the teacher and principal (Ms Hoopingcough and Mr Grunt) to the apply named cast-- Adam Bomb, Rob Slob, and Junk food John, and the perfect twins Peter and Patty Perfect... They travel through a normal day of school in Smellsville (where the metal garbage can was invented). However, a few side adventures ensue and will lead them to getting rid of "mamma" and a field trip to the Tomb of the unknown sanitation worker.
The antics are hilarious and immature.... As they should be for the target audience. As my 9 year old found this entertaining, I recommend ages 8-12 for the listening pleasure of a science project made of boogers to their love of all things made from garbage. The audiobook is told by various narrators and the different perspectives of several characters; including Brainy Janey and Cranky Franky. Pick it for your tween's ensured laugh!

I am still laughing and enamored of the Garbage Pail Kids so I can only imagine the delight of my students. Goosebumps is one of the most popular series in my Media Center and the Garbage Pail Kids are sure to enjoy the same popularity.
The narrators were great and the music and sounds enhanced the audio. It was so much fun to hear. The names of the Smellville characters were so clever and the rhyming and descriptive titles so humorous. The idea of the imperfect but well-meaning characters pitted against the the Perfect students is a never-ending plot but the author brought his own originality and stamp of laughter. This is sure to be a hit!

Perfect fun and fond memories!- Fans of this pop culture trend will eat this up...Not to mention new ones who get curious about the cast of characters. Different narrator's and smooth transitions make each unique Garbage Pail Kid come to life. The story follows a house of parent less kids as they try to deter the "perfects" from learning about their lack of supervision. Don't be surprised if you audibly gasp at some of the well written gags and descriptions. Very good work by Stine!

Thank you to NetGalley for this audiobook!

Can a book be cute and improper (in a good way) at the same time? It can! And this book is the perfect example. It’s full of nostalgia and it’s so much fun. It gets better if you are a Garbage Pail Kids and R.L. Stine fan which I am.

As a child of the 1990's, I was excited to see horror-master R.L. Stine's take on the classic Garbage Pail Kids. It is just as silly and gross as I remembered, and the audiobook really brought it to life. A full cast is always fun and this is no exception. My kids and I found ourselves cracking up over and over.
