Description
Roger Strauss was US Air Force pilot with a promising career ahead of him.
He was chosen to test pilot an experimental vehicle which would make it possible to instantly travel from one point in the universe to another.
The craft would circumvent time and space by leaving the universe, and once outside, the pilot would take advantage of the infinite perspective to enter the universe again at a new point.
But instead of returning to the universe at a different physical location, Roger finds himself in an alien universe with a different set of physical laws.
He is a stranger Avramis, the Flat World, and almost immediately becomes the center of an ancient conflict which is nearly as old as the world itself.

I found this book to be very entertaining, and entirely unpredictable. There were a few minor issues with the editing in the early chapters, but it improved in the later parts of the story, and as I got farther into the story I got so involved with what was going on that I didn't notice if there were any errors.
The author excels in crafting a world entirely different from what we have seen before, complete with its own history, its own problems, and its own unique strengths and weaknesses. There are strong characters who are good or bad, but even the good characters sometimes make mistakes and have to deal with the consequences. While there is a strong moral code in the characters, this is not heavy-handed and there is room for a myriad of differences in the cultures of the world in terms of acceptable custom and dress.
The differences in culture, and how the various sub-cultures play off each other is one area I found to be of particular interest in the book. There are also clear parallels that can be drawn between the history of Flatworld and our own world, yet this is done without heavy-handed allegory.
I look forward to reading more from this author."

Well that was different? Still unsure if it is in a good way or bad way.. Definitely had me thinking in the end about other planets and worlds beyond our own galaxy, which was the point of this book. The hero of this book is a space traveler and discovers a new world and other intelligent lifeforms. He is immediately treated as stranger and becomes entangled in a war that could destroy the entire civilization.
I was on the edge of my seat most of this book, but there were some slumps in the pace and action. Definitely an interesting sci-fi read. Highly recommended for the action and the good parts. 4.25 stars.

"Flat World - The Arrival: Part 1" by Ivor Kovac is a readable and enjoyable adventure tale that comfortably feels like a well written modern reimagining of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom series, where the planet Barsoom is replaced with Flat World in another universe, Confederate veteran John Carter is replaced with U.S. Air Force pilot Roger Strauss, the various sentient and warring species of Barsoom are replaced with the various sentient and warring species of Flat World, and so forth. It is enjoyable to vicariously join Roger Strauss as he learns the complex and interesting world and societies of this new planet while trying to understand what role he is playing while striving to do the right thing.
The illustrations, many of which are by the author, were also a skillful touch that helped the reader gain insight into the author's literal viewpoint.
It should come without surprise that being "Part 1", this book ends in a cliffhanger with a number of unanswered questions. Fortunately, since this was a fun book to read, I look forward to learning how it continues when I read "Part 2".
