Marvelous book about how Oregon and Washington came to be. I learn a lot about the rocks, landscapes, rivers and oceans, and also about floods, volcano, earthquakes and water and how they etched the landscapes. I never knew how much there was to a rock, where it came from, why it looks like it does, if its dangerous to pick up. I love learning how the waterfall were created, how faults create different looks to a landscape depending on what type of fault. There was so much I learn from this book that I looked forward to seeing what else the book had to say.
The book is very easy reading but has a lot to say, so I read it slowly to absorb as much as I could. I like the book so much I was wondering if the authors will be doing a study of other parts of the United States.
Excellent text on geology! Covers almost everything that I learned in my two semesters of college geology classes, but with the emphasis on the Pacific Northwest.
Easily read and understood. Lavishly photographed. Loads of information.
Now I am looking forward to putting my knowledge to the test on my next hikes!
As a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, most of the information within this book is kind of familiar, but I do love knowing more about the environment around me, especially when it comes to all our local rocks and minerals! The Pacific Northwest is so unique because we have so many different environments all in one place: rain forests, coastal lands, high desert, volcanoes, mountains, wetlands...the Pacific Northwest is not just one thing, and you can see it in our many, many, many different varieties of rocks. If you're not big into rocks or if you don't live in the PNW, this book might not hold much interest to you, but if you have even the slightest interest in the region or in geology, then this is an incredible resource.
Now if only I could find an actual agate near my house...
Rocks, Minerals, and Geology of the Pacific Northwest is a comprehensive and well written field 1guide to the geophysical Pacific Northwest of North America aimed at laymen and written in accessible and understandable language. Due out 16th March 2021 from Workman Publishing on their Timber Press imprint, it's 360 pages and will be available in flexibound format.
The authors have written an information dense and accessible guide for readers looking for an introduction to earth science as well as a good field guide to rocks and minerals. The book has a logical layout: a short (easily understandable, not too technical) intro on general geology followed by the field guide. The authors are upbeat and enthusiastic about their subject and that comes through very well in the text.
The chapters cover geology, rocks, minerals, meteorite and fossil identification, macro-structures, geomorphology, and interpreting the physical landscape to tease out the hidden history of an area. The book also includes extensive useful appendices and resources including a solid bibliography and links lists for further reading, a glossary, and a cross-referenced index.
The photography is simply gorgeous. Nearly every page has full color photographs and illustrations.
Five stars. This is a useful resource. It would make a superlative choice for public or school library acquisition, community hiking/rockhound groups, home library, and for hobbyists.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I really enjoyed this book. For me, its clearly not the read in one sitting kind of book. But I think it is really well laid out and informative. It is absolutely fascinating and something I would love to share with my nieces and nephews as they grow older. The pictures are great and the text is clear and easy to follow. Defiantly recommend if you are interested in this topic.
I’ve always been fascinated by beautiful, unique rocks and formations. I remember as a kid creating quite the collection. As I got older, I got rid of these beauties, thinking that is what you did as you grew up. This book shows that there are those who remain passionate about rocks, minerals and geology and seek to inspire this passion in others. I love the region represented here, the Pacific Northwest, because this is a region completely unknown to me. I can live and learn vicariously through these pages. It reads as in interactive textbook and is full of vivid images. An excellent resource that leaves me wanting to find versions for other regions to explore. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own, freely given.
This is beautiful, and a great addition to this series of guidebooks. I love these for their information, their formatting, and the way they combine the identification "what am I looking at" side of guidebooks with a more informational and "what does that mean" piece as well!
What an informative and easy to digest field guise to the geology of the Pacific Northwest and also rockhounding and geology in general.
The book goes into the various ways rocks and minerals are formed and the various types of formations and classifications generally and specifically found throughout Washington and Oregon states. Even if you never plan to rockhound yourself in these areas you can still learn so much about geology and rocks and minerals in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it a quick read with more information than I expected. Lovely photos as well.
This would really be ideal for a physical science/ geology unit, especially for students who are located near the PNW. Great illustrations and well organized.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
