Description
More interested in kneading dough than adding it up, Lindsey's breakup inspired her to set up the shop she always wanted in a place that always made her happy. She'd spent many childhood summers near this beach community and converting the old run-down lighthouse into a bakery café and home offers a perfect fresh start for Lindsey and her devoted Newfoundland dog, Wellington.
But not everyone in town has a sweet tooth. The preservation society won't have the lighthouse's history sugar coated by lattes and cakes--and a protest group crashes Lindsey's Memorial Day opening. Then her ex-fiancé Jeffrey Plank and his girlfriend Mia Wong arrive to trash the place. In the ensuing chaos Mia chokes on a donut and dies.
An autopsy reveals cyanide in Mia's bloodstream and Lindsey is the police's prime suspect. To clear her name, she's going to need to combine ingredients found in the town's checkered past to uncover the identity of a desperate killer...

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of MURDER AT THE BEACON BAKESHOP (Book 1 of the Beacon Bakeshop Mysteries) by Darci Hannah in exchange for an honest review. Lindsey Bakewell is a successful and therefore, wealthy, New York financier. On her birthday, she finds her celebrity chef fiancé in flagrante delicto with his pastry chef on a cooking surface in his restaurant. Yuck! A good bit of wine and some computer surfing later, Lindsey finds herself the owner of a lighthouse in Beacon Harbor, Michigan with plans to convert the property into a bakery. When she arrives in Beacon Harbor, things aren’t quite as advertised. First, she’s met by guy in a truck instead of by a chauffeur with a limousine. Second, the property barely resembles the lovely photographs shown on the realtor’s website. Third, the lighthouse is haunted! However, life must go on, so Lindsey and her Newfoundland make do and settle in while massive renovations bring the property into alignment with Lindsey’s vision. On opening day, Lindsey’s ex-fiancé and his girlfriend make a surprise appearance to trash the bakery and to ruin Lindsey’s business. When one of them dies after ingesting Lindsey’s offerings, Lindsey finds herself a prime suspect in the death and her bakery closed for the foreseeable future. Lindsey, her visiting best friend, and her new acquaintances decide to investigate so they can clear Lindsey of suspicion and reopen the bakery.
I liked this book and thought it was a great start to a new series. I recommend this book to fans of cozy mysteries featuring murder, lakeside towns, bakeries, small town secrets, and giant dogs.

Recently I read the Haunted Lighthouse series. I loved the lighthouse lore and scenery. So I was thrilled to get this promotional ebook from Netgalley (in return for posting an honest review).
I was involved from the first page. Great characters and lovely writing and imagery. So now I'm going to need to buy my own lighthouse!
Bring your appetite and your thinking cap when you dive into this story.
I pretty much wasn’t able to put this book down when I was reading it... only when the food descriptions were so heavenly that I had to stop and make myself a snack (this may have happened more times than I care to admit).
The plot and mystery were perfect for the cozy mystery genre. Likeable narrator, quaint town, suspicious about everyone else, precious pooches, a possible haunting ... wait what?! Yes! A possible haunting! That’s what made this story even more fun for me.
I’m going to be eagerly awaiting the next book in the series because I honestly wasn’t ready to leave Beacon when I reached the end.
Side note: many of the delicious foods mentioned within the story are given as recipes at the end of the book.
What a great start to a new series. A cheating fiancé, a sweet drooling dog, a BFF with a cool British accent, a hunky neighbor and a new dream career as a bakery owner in a gorgeous setting. What more can one ask for?
Well, if you are Lindsey Bakewell you can ask for a smooth opening day for her new bakery set within a lighthouse. That, unfortunately, is not going to happen for her as a certain someone dies right on her lawn after taking a bite of one Lindsey's donuts along with a sip of her coffee. From there, enter Officer Cutie and hard-bitten, but soft-hearted, Detctive Murdock who close down Lindsey's newly opened bakery until a murderer is found.
I couldn't put this book down. It is well-written, fast-paced, and keeps you guessing until the very end. The characters are fun and interesting. I can't wait until the next book in this charming series. Highly recommended for mystery and cozy readers.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the digital ARC. All opinions are my own. This review can also be found on my Goodreads page.
