Description

Six kids are ready to play: three speak English. Y tres hablan español [and three speak Spanish]. But all of them laugh alike and together! This clever playground adventure weaves together bilingual Spanish and English conversations, so two groups of children can express similar thoughts in their own languages.

A brand new barrier-breaking and friendship-affirming bilingual picture book from award-winning author Carmen T. Bernier-Grand (Diego: Bigger than Life). Three kids are playing at the park when three more arrive. The groups can't understand each other because one trio speaks only English and the other only Spanish. But they can express similar thoughts in their own languages. Aquí interactúan el inglés y el español. Can they find a way to play? Of course they can! By watching each other, both groups learn that they are more alike than different and end up discovering new words and making new friends in this adventure propelled by clever integrated Spanish dialogue.

I enjoyed this bilingual storybook about a group of kids who decide to play and learn the spanish song being sung by the Hispanic kids on the playground. Loved the positive message of inclusiveness and diversity. Would definitely buy it for my son.

This was a wonderful book about two sets of kids playing on the same playground. Though they did not have a common language, they realized they have other things in common such as their love of laughing and playing. Their differences are less important than those commonalities. This book is a great addition to picture book collections!

"We Laugh Alike" presents two learning to kids.
1) Bilingual book explaining easy sentences/song in English and Spanish.
2) Message of diversity and acceptance of other culture

Both learnings are delivered wonderfully. I like the way two separate groups of kids end up being a single group.

A definite recommendation.

I enjoyed and recommend this bilingual story. These books help students read a great tale at the same time as broadening their language horizons!

I thought that this book was just lovely and it was a wonderful bilingual story.

The book is very well written, it has a lovely flow to it and the illustrations just bring it to life. loved the focus around the diverse mix of characters and the positive message – and as a plus my daughter got to learn a little Spanish too!

Definitely a book I could see being read at school too and one to use as a classroom aid to talk about different cultures and backgrounds with the focus on this one being Hispanic and the song that the children are singing at the playground.

A fun and colourful read with some lovely illustrations – it is 5 stars from me for this one!

This bilingual book depicts two groups of kids coming to the park to play. They are each fascinated by the language, songs and games of the other group. They listen and learn. Until...they decide to play together.

The illustrations are fun and bright, bringing life to the story. The author also reinforces the message of kids that while people may have differences, there is so much more that brings them together. In the beginning, the book has English and Spanish text on separate pages next to the group of children speaking. When the children begin to play with one another, the text also comes together on a single page. The author’s note gives suggestions for learning a new language and embracing other cultures.

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A nice book showing kids that even though we don’t all speak the same language, we can still communicate. There are 2 groups of kids in this book and they play together even though they don’t understand the words. The illustrations are nice too.

Super cute story about six kids playing on the playground, even though they don’t all speak the same language. Half speak English and half speak Spanish, but using gestures they are able to invite each other to play together. They all notice differences in how they sing, dance and rhyme, but when they laugh they all sound the same.

This story feels like something I have seen many times at the playground. Kids who speak different languages still enjoy playing together, despite language barriers. They are just happy to have someone to play with. I also enjoyed the flow between English and Spanish in the book, it felt very organic.

I received an electronic ARC from Charlesbridge through NetGalley.
Bernier-Grand has created a delightful story that shows play is universal. Six kids meet in a park. Three speak one language; three another. They work together to find ways to communicate and play together. Readers see both English and Spanish text on each page spread. In addition to being brightly colored and detailed, the illustrations provide context clues for readers in both languages. A Spanish/English glossary is included at the end.
Terrific book for elementary libraries.

I love bilingual books that can help children develop their reading skills in another language, but this one takes that concept to another level! Most of the story is evenly bilingual, but there are parts where you get a slightly different perspective of the story depending on whether you are reading the English or Spanish parts! This really empowers the story because the children playing at the playground don't know each other's language, and have to find other ways to communicate that they want to play together. What an exciting way to encourage children to try and learn new languages, so that they can find out what each set of friends is saying!

A nice book about friendship and learning about different cultures. The book is written part in English and part in Spanish and would be a nice addition to a diverse book collection.

A fun and cute story for bilingual kids or kids who are learning spanish.! Also promoting kids to play together even if there are differences in things such as language.

As a "No Sabo" kid myself, I am doing my best to teach my child Spanish and this is such a lovely, kind story of a group of kids who don't all speak the same language but all can enjoy playing together. It showcases how so many barriers of language can be walked through together with patience and laughter. Children are sweet, pure in intentions, and just want to have fun. I loved that this book celebrated that everyone should be welcome and you can play in any language or walk of life. We live in a predominantly multilingual community and this book truly helped inspire my kindergartner to ask her teacher how to speak phrases in Spanish specifically so she could ask classmates to be her friend. How can I NOT recommend a book that inspired my kid to push through her shyness to make a new friend? Recommended to younger elementary readers, 5-7.
