Description

There’s a fine line between comedy and cruelty, and this intimate and quirky memoir invites readers into Carolyn V. Hamilton’s tumultuous world of marriage to stand-up comedian, Cork Proctor, a Las Vegas comedy legend.

Every relationship contains a his version and her version of events, and Carolyn is clear that this is her version of her life and marriage. In this powerful memoir, she chronicles her experiences of love and world travel with her husband, balancing her career as a graphic designer and print communication professional with his comedy career.

In these vignette stories of their relationship, she reveals with honesty and wit the early years after they met at the Las Vegas Press Club, their courtship and consummation, their fund-raising wedding, their adventure in the U.S. Peace Corps, how the marriage ended, and their continued relationship after divorce, including his 80th birthday Las Vegas roast, and their move to Ecuador. At the same time, she reveals her emotional triumphs and sorrows, both public and private, as she lived them.

HELP! I Married an Alien a Comedian, includes a foreword by award-winning Las Vegas journalist and historian, John L. Smith

Advance Praise

"""With wit and candor, the narrative segues throughout the book between anecdotal episodes...eventful and engaging. Hamilton's voice has an entertaining, humorous, and at times bawdy lightness that effectively suits the content. The characters are surely unique and readers will relish having a window into their lives."" - BookLife Critic's Report

Cork Proctor's entire life was just one long comedy routine! Some comics just never know when to get off stage! My God, how do you do it? Just having to keep him focused on stage was impossible!"" - Greg Thompson, Greg Thompson Productions

Carolyn V. Hamilton has provided a wonderful balance of loving as well as heartbreaking moments. Her portrayal of a comedian whose edgy jokes often border on cruelty is simply fascinating. How his derogatory comments eventually wore her down over the years, leading to divorce, is a case study of verbal and emotional abuse. Yet, she was always able to identify and appreciate his better qualities. The inside view of working in Las Vegas, in clubs in other locales and on cruise ships is also eye-opening. Author, ex-wife and companion, Carolyn V. Hamilton has skillfully crafted Help! I Married a Comedian: A memoir of life in the circus lane of marriage to a stand-up comedian. This memoir is unlike any other - a compelling read. - Readers Choice

A talented writer and artist, Carolyn gives readers a backstage pass to the downright insane world of a working comic from the showrooms and lounges of Las Vegas to cruise ships in distant ports of call. Suffice to say it's not all grins and giggles working amid jangling slots and at times belligerent tourists. That insight alone is worth the price of admission. But don't be misled. Help! I Married a Comedian is a love story. Well, at moments it's a love-hate story, but then all real love stories are that way. It's a story of real people, both funny as hell, learning to adjust and roll with life's punches while embracing the adventure of it all. - award-winning Las Vegas journalist and historian, John L. Smith

Thank you NetGalley, Carolyn V. Hamilton and BooksGoSocial for the copy of HELP! I Married an Alien a Comedian. This is my personal review.
This is a story told by Carolyn the woman who married a comedian Corky Proctor.
They are two vastly different people who love each other enough to stay married and make their marriage work.
Carolyn tells the story with humor, love, ups and downs and all the adventures they go through together. Their life is one that many could not do but they are made for each other. They spend some time in the Peace Corps. The eventually retire in Ecuador.
The book was an interesting look from the outside of the life of a comedian’s spouse.
