Description
The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series is a chance to rediscover classic literature in collectible, luxuriously illustrated volumes. For the first time ever, the internationally celebrated artwork of Marjolein Bastin graces the pages of a timeless classic, Pride and Prejudice, the enduring story of the Bennet sisters and their quest for suitable marriages. Beyond bringing these stories to life, Bastin’s series adds elaborately designed ephemera, such as four-color maps, letters, family trees, and sheet music. Whether an ideal gift for an Austen devotee or a treat for yourself, The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series, as a set or individually purchased, is perfect for anyone who feels a connection to these enduring literary gems.
Discover anew the dramatic world of Pride and Prejudice. In early nineteenth-century England, Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters are expected to secure their future by a suitable marriage. The family’s modest assets, however, make that a challenging prospect. Though the new neighbor Mr. Bingley would be a good match, his haughty friend Mr. Darcy does not hold the Bennets in high regard. Societal expectations and romantic aspirations collide and make finding an appropriate spouse a dramatic endeavor.

In the new collectible edition by talented illustrator Marjolein Bastin, Pride and Prejudice is another creative gem. I would describe it using the same pros and cons I mentioned in my review of Emma. It is beautifully illustrated with rich and precious natural elements. But it does not contain any visual interpretation of the characters, and that is something I would have really appreciated to see. Besides, it is best enjoyed in paper format.
The major visual asset here, when compared with Emma, would be the quality of the cover, in my opinion. The cover looks more dramatic and mysterious with this intense dark and gold background.
The book will be available in stores in February 2021.
★★★✰✰ 3.75 stars (rounded up to 4)
It isn't surprising that Pride and Prejudice has become such a classic, one that inspired thousands of adaptations and re-tellings. Many of the story's components have become conventions...and to dismiss this novel as a 'girl's book' is not only incredibly superficial but it negates Jane Austen's clever social commentary.
While many of its characters are satirical personifications of certain types of people (the solipsistic and frivolous mother, the disinterested father, the silly sister(s), the intellectual one, and so on) it does so in a compelling way that makes them all the more vivid in the reader's mind. Austen's witty narrative might not appeal to all readers but it is undeniable that her story presents us with sharp-witted portraits.
In spite of her 'prejudices' Liz was an admirable heroine whose loyalty to her family, and in particular to her sister Jane, made her all the more likeable. Her 'romance' with Darcy is but one of the many strands of this rich story that deals with class and gender. What happens between the characters is conveyed in a subtle manner, through carefully selected words...yet the narrative is always buzzing with a vibrant energy.
An entertaining read that definitely lived up to its fame.
This new edition is certainly pretty but the pdf version is too 'large' for my kindle so I had to use my laptop to access it. Although the illustrations of flowers and butterflies are lovely they don't add much to the story (perhaps illustrations of certain scenes would been better suited).
Thanks to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel for the advanced copy.
My review on this illustrated edition, that will be out on March 2nd 2021, is in a vein very similar to the one I've written for Emma.
Pride and Prejudice is a timeless classic that deserves all the special editions one can afford and being the big Jane Austen fan that I am, it was a joy being able to have this digital preview in my hands, but I believe that it can only be fully enjoyed in paper format.
As I have noted for Emma, the illustrations by Marjolein Bastin are detailed, elegant and beautifully designed but I was expecting something more than nature-themed depictions. I think these special editions could've been even more so if there had been a few illustrations of scenes from the novel.
These versions of Emma and Pride and Prejudice are lovely and well done, making them great collectibles one can add to their own personal library or gift to others.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a classic for a reason. Austen's work is timeless and perfect place to start when delving into classics. Pride and Prejudice is tied for my second favorite work by Austen and is the ultimate hate-to-love romance story.
Pride and Prejudice follows Elizabeth Bennet as she first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy. Upon their first meeting, she thinks him arrogant and conceited, while he he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever.
The is a beautiful edition of the timeless love story and a great way to engage in this timeless classic. I highly recommend this!
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This review will be for the illustrations specifically (since the novel itself is already a classic that I love).
There were gorgeous floral illustrations around the borders and ends of chapters throughout this version of Pride and Prejudice, which were such colorful additions. I do wish there had been a little more theming to the actual flowers chosen, as it appeared there was just a couple illustrations of the 30+ different species. Maybe they could have used flowers that were native to the lands that the novel took place in?
Other than that, this is a beautiful edition!
Five reasons to read Pride and Prejudice
1. The detail of Austen's writing which drags the reader almost into her time period. Sure it can be long and slow at times but it creates a glimpse into a previous era which was more pure and innocent in many aspects.
2. The wit of Austen's writing. An aspect many readers could easily miss if they don't delve into the beauty of the prose.
3. The characters created are incredibly memorable. Who could forget Mr Darcy or Elizabeth Bennett? They are not only memorable but likeable in their own ways too.
4. The background story behind Austen writing in a time when women writing was frowned upon. A story that showed self-belief and motivation despite being trodden down by society. I respect her for that alone to come out and write powerful stories like this.
5. It's a novel that helps you to escape and enjoy yourself and that makes this valuable as a work of fiction. For too often people forget that books are not real and should help us escape.
Also this new edition is absolutely stunning.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is one of my favorite books ever and this edition looks pretty in ebook, but I think it would look even better in print. Can't wait to buy it!
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a classic for a reason, is timeless and ultimate hate to love romance story.
I absolutely love this cover, it's beautiful and romantic.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This illustrated edition of Pride and Prejudice (and the one for Emma) just makes me happy. A beloved classic made even more beautiful with wonderful illustration. The kid in me that love Petter Rabbit books is delighted to have found an adult version. This edition of Pride and Prejudice has gorgeous watercolors of nature, and beautiful colors even for the first letter of each chapter. This delightful book would make a great gift, especially now that many of us just need something that will make us smile.
Pride and Prejudice does not *need* illustrations to stand strong, but this volume is gorgeous. The art complements the text beautifully. This is a must read/see for fans! It's truly lovely and I will be adding it to my shelf.
Pride and Prejudice is my 2nd favorite Jane Austen story (behind Persuasion), and this witty and timeless hate-to-love story gets a vibrant upgrade with these gorgeous illustrations! It adds a level of intimacy and elegance to an already amazing story.
The illustrations by Marjolein Bastin are so rich and detailed - especially that cover! The contrast of black, gold, and pastel colors are so striking! I think this will be so gorgeous as a coffee table book.
Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing for a a gifted advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Just about my all-time favorite book ever! I love this beautiful edition! I cannot wait to get my hands on it in person!!
Most classic lovers would have already read Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. This edition, however, isn't just for new readers but for collectors. It takes the evergreen story by Jane Austen and presents in a beautiful new packaging. The overall effect is so compelling that it will be tough to resist purchasing this book, especially as the story is unabridged and hence will retain its original appeal.
The cover itself indicates how beautiful the inner content of this book will be. Every single chapter is embellished with lovely flowers. With a new chapter, the flower changes. The result is a floral extravaganza with the fragrance being provided by Jane Austen's everlasting story. Marjolein Bastin is a brilliant illustrator and it shows in her work.
I just wish the font used would have been something other than the typical Times New Roman. I understand that the classic novels were printed using this typeface but it looks plain next to the beautiful flowers.
But it's still a gorgeous book and worth adding to your collection.
I love this story in the first place, but the little illustrated additions were a nice touch. They didn't add a whole lot to the actual story, but it was still fun to have those little additions. It would be a beautiful addition to your library for a fun collectors version. It really is beautiful.
Stunning cover. I absolutely love the new editions. These are so beautiful. As a Janeite, I can't wait to have these on my shelves. Since the story doesn't change and everyone knows the tale of Elizabeth and Darcy, I am not going to review the book but I do love these new cover.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite Austen titles. Reading it in this gorgeous edition made for an even more enjoyable experience. This novel can be read, reread and treasured. I always find something new with each reread. In fact, I am just finishing a wonderful class on the novel.
The story itself is well known but perhaps wasted on those kids who are asked to read it in school before they are really ready. The story of the Bennet family and those around them is fresh, funny and, at times, serious. We all have our pride and our prejudices; while reading about those in the novel, we can think, too, about how we may judge others wrongly. Readers can also contemplate the roles of women and the social meaning of marriage at the time. But…along with deeper themes there is wit, plot, romance, a bit of travel and more.
This particular edition is special because of its beauty, beginning with the gorgeous cover. It is a keeper and one that would make a perfect gift for the reader or someone about whom they care.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.
5/5
A beautiful new edition of what I consider to be one of the greatest classics of all time. Jane Austen gets a new look in this set that is part of The Marjolein Bastin Classics series. The illustrations adorning the cover and chapter pages give a refreshing look to the story itself altogether showcasing a new way to read Austen. Each chapter is divided by different color schemes and floral arrangements, making me pause ever so often to admire. As I am a fan of collector and special editions I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy. More-so, I think this will allow many to rediscover Jane Austen's works or prepare to dive into them for the first time.
I will always welcome Pride and Prejudice like the dear friend it has become. This beautifully illustrated edition is no exception. Though, there were birds toward the end, which I could have done without.
Pride and Prejudice. I adore this book. It is definitely one of my favorite Austen novels and has two of my favorite couples of all time.
Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
Well, this was actually a reread, because this book was the first classic I've ever read years ago when I was still in high school and it was also my first contact with Austen's writing, which nowadays is one of my favorite authors.
I feel kinda dumb saying what this is about, since I feel like everybody knows it, but here we go: this one is about the Bennet sisters and Mrs. Bennet quest to finding her daughters proper suitors. Lizzy is the eldest sister and she ends up meeting Mr. Darcy, who is too proud, and well, you know it goes.
I simply adore the characters and how their development is deep throughout the story. They have such interesting and different backgrounds, but somehow work so well together and even complement each other. Not only the two main characters, but even the secondary characters feel so real and realist.
The irony is all over the book: in the narrative, the dialogues and even in some events. It's such a funny book, although not in an obvious way. The prose is incredible and just impossible to stop reading. The maps, letters, family trees, and sheet music were also a really interesting addition to the book.
It's definitely one of my favorite book from all time and each time I read it, I see and learn something different. If you're not used to reading classics, I definitely recommend this one.
This book is gorgeous!!! I love the story, obviously, but I would LOVE to get my hands on the hard copy of this beautifully illustrated book. I mean honestly, so so lovely! Perfect collectors item for sure!
I love Pride and Prejudice. What is there to say about Austen's masterpiece that hasn't already been said many times? If you haven't read it, you need to do so now. Okay? So we're cool then.
Just commenting on the pictures in this incarnation of the book.
This is an illustrated edition with beautiful drawings of plants, birds and insects. I imagine them as a Bennet girl's educational project. None of the pictures have anything to do with the plot of the book and don't add anything in that respect. But they're pretty, and a splash of colour might enliven the reading experience for young readers and others who struggle with concentrating on pages and pages of mere words.
With or without pictures, Austen is always worth it. If illustrated, my personal preference is pictures that have to do with the plot, if they add some historical understanding or contain clever depictions of the characters. However, generic flora and fauna are preferable to plot related pictures that clash with the historical era or quarrel with my mental pictures of the characters.
This edition of one of my most beloved stories of all time is so beautiful. I can't wait to gift it to my best friend who is obsessed with Pride and Prejudice :)
I’ll let the many reviews for the text of this marvelous book stand, and leave my words for the illustrations of this particular edition.
I did go into this expecting full page, scene illustrations from a story that I love and know well, so I was a little disappointed when that was not the case.
However, the little touches of nature, in some truly beautifully rendered birds and flowers alongside the edges of some pages and at the end of each chapter are gorgeous little touches grounding the story in the countryside of Austen’s story. The illuminated style of each first letter in each chapter was also lovely. And the final spread of pages at the end was breathtaking, and I would buy prints of those pages.
All in all, not what I expected from an illustrated edition, but a lovely addition to an Austen fan’s collection, regardless.
I loved this new version of pride and prejudice, the same words of Jane Austen that I read a long time ago surrounded by beautiful watercolor illustrations and with details in the letters and invitations that the characters exchange, I think it is the perfect book for any library, and a perfect gift for every one.
.
It was a beautiful experience re-rereading this classic on such beautiful pages.
.
Thanks to #NetGalley for let me read this beautiful book
Loved it!! The illustrations are beautiful and colourful. Very apt for the story. Wish I had a physical copy of this book 😭
Thank you Netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest opinion.
Marjolein Bastin’s beautiful illustrations of botanicals and nature have long been a favorite. Combine them with some of my favorite literature? Yes, please!
That said…the illustrations are incidental to the story. They are not illustrations of scenes from the books. The publisher’s blurb says there are facsimiles of sheet music, family trees, etc., but the eARCs I was provided did not include these, so I cannot comment on them.
Story wise, these are as they have ever been. Pride and Prejudice is one of my “desert island” books; I can read it over and over, and not tire of it. Emma is still my least favorite of Austen’s works, and she still bugs me.
But there is a reason these classics have been made and remade as movies, whether set in their original timeframe or updated. They are charming and witty, and Austen’s observations on human nature, like Shakespeare’s, hold up to the test of time.
I definitely disagree with the publisher’s details on the reading level of these books. They are not for 7-10-year-olds, or 4th- to 6th-graders. I was a pretty advanced reader and didn’t read P&P until my sophomore year in high school. My college prep reading class struggled with the language and long sentences of these books.
If you’re looking to collect beautiful copies of favorite books, these fill the bill. I couldn’t find specific information, but I imagine them in a larger trim size, on beautiful glossy 100 lb. paper, as with our fancy editions of Tolkein or Rowling. As they will not be released for three more months, this is only speculation. However, that would definitely do Bastein’s beautiful, delicate work justice!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARCs.
The illustrations in this book were lovely, thought not thematically aimed. Interspersed with flowers and birds, this is a beautifully illustrated edition, however note that that is the only change that has been made-- the addition of flowers and birds.
Lovely light floral pictures illustrating Pride and Prejudice. Ties nicely into Elizabeth Bennet's love of nature. This would be a very pretty copy to gift someone.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books, so I was delighted to review this! This is a beautiful edition complete with many stunning illustrations from Marjolein Bastin. My favorite part was the wide variety of flowers that were very cleverly included! I think this would be the perfect gift for any Jane Austen fan, whether new or old. Illustrations also include sheet music, maps, family trees, and beautiful colors. This illustrated edition of Pride and Prejudice releases on February 2, 2021. Thank you so much to Marjolein Bastin, Andrews McMeel Publishing, and Netgalley for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I swooned when I found this enchanting version of one of my fave books ever, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, rendering me as stunned as when Darcy arose from that pond in his puffy shirt! The lovely artwork by popular illustrator Marjolein Bastin sets off the original text to perfection. I know now what I want for my birthday. In fact, I’ll ask for the whole Marjolein Bastin series, collectible copies that reintroduce classic literature to the world. Oh happy days!

Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing
and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
One of my favorite books got an illustrated update in this beautiful copy. I thought Marjolein Bastin‘s illustrations were lovely. There was no rhyme or reason to the particular flowers given that they didn’t have any connection to the text, but it’s beautiful all the same. This would be a nice copy of P&P to give as a present!
This is such a beautiful edition of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I have owned many editions of this novel in my lifetime, but this one with beautiful illustrations by Marjolein Bastin is the loveliest one that I have seen. I have received an ebook version, with thanks to Netgalley , for a review. I will however be buying a physical copy of this book when it is released, as it is very beautiful, as it’s companion volume of Austen’s Emma with gorgeous illustration by the same artist.
Definitely my favourite classic!
Just love the characters and the combination of comedy and romance.
Would definitely recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed the film
This rerelease of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice in " The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series" is an opportunity for readers to engage with classics in an interactive way. Though this was not included in the PDF copy in which this was reviewed it will be addressed as accompanied pages were found on the publisher website. Through "Simon and Schuster" can readers examine these extras that include four-color maps, letters, family trees, and sheet music. I have viewed these and find them wonderful. Also Included were illustrations by Marjolein Bastin. In each chapter, various flowers were added to the edges of the page or end of a paragraph. They added to the symbolism on the page and was something extra that made the copy more enjoyable for me. If you are interested in other classics by Jane Austen Emma is available within this series as well as Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.
I love classic literature and Pride and Prejudice is one of my absolute favourites, but when I saw this version on NetGalley I knew I just had to read it. The illustrations are stunning and really add to the story, it made the enjoyment of reading a favourite book all the more better. I’m keeping an eye out for other classic works given this treatment.
The story stands on its own merit as one of the greatest novels in history, but this edition brings to it beautiful typography, along with exquisite illustrations of flowers, birds, bees and butterflies to grace the margins. It's gorgeous! Any Austen fan would be thrilled to own this edition. I really like the font as well: it is elegant and very readable.
After finishing each of Austen’s novels, I am always confused as to how I should feel. However what sets Pride and Prejudice apart from the others is that Elizabeth does not have to change her ways or succumb to the system to be happy. Elizabeth and Jane Bennet both end up as wives, but Elizabeth’s journey to self-discovery and growth is much different from what is typically seen in a 19th century novel. Instead of changing herself to fit the mold, or toning it down so she could become wife-material, her persistence never waivers. In warming up to Darcy, the only thing she loses is her prejudice, which was doing her more bad than good, in turn affecting the growth of her character. She refuses to maintain politeness and modesty when Lady Catherine insults her character, and never enables the superiority complex that Lady Catherine’s possess and tries to use to her advantage. Elizabeth stands up for herself with pride, strong in her convictions, with a confidence that is threatening to the class system she is expected to buy into and follow. The distance between the two on the social pyramid does not threaten Elizabeth, and in the end she gets to keep her dignity and her man. Through Elizabeth’s reluctance to back down, Austen exemplifies the belief that a woman’s character is worth more than her status. Darcy and Elizabeth’s engagement allows the audience to see that Elizabeth beat the patriarchy and all its soldiers. The love they share triumphs over money, class, and family, leaving the reader with a warm sense of accomplishment from the heroine of the novel.
Cover review: This edition is absolutely beautiful! The colors blend together very well, and the flowers are just perfect with the colors.
Plus it is so wonderful for this classic!
I am so excited about this new series of classical novel editions. The delicate florals are lovely and eye-catching, and the timeless stories are a perfect backdrop for new a beautiful art.
There is always, one might say, room for another edition of these books.
The bright and colourful flowers, birds and butterflies really lift the pages and draw the eye. the repeated hydrangea motif in this book is truly beautiful.
This edition would look wonderful as a set, but they shine equally on their own.
I would recommend this book as a gift for any book lovers, and lovers of a special edition.
Highly recommended.
It is always a pleasure to reread one of my favorite books and if it is in an edition as magnificent as this one, the pleasure is even greater..It´s beautifully edited, with wonderful drawings of all kinds of flowers and small animals (mostly birds and butterflies), which introduce the chapters and end them. I would buy this edition without any doubt.
This adds a lovely text and scrip to a love classic, It gives a lovely new feel on a reread. Lots of flowers.
This beautiful edition of Austen's Pride and Prejudice from The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series is beautifully embellished and illustrated with colorful florals that add a charming touch to this beloved work. The artwork is simply stunning, and a great accompaniment to the unabridged classic novel. It's great for collectors, long-time fans of the work, and new generations discovering these classics.
Many thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for the advance copy.
Who wants a stunningly beautiful edition of a classic for a lot of money if you c a read th same words for way cheaper rather or for free online or secondhand with a cheapo copy?
ME!
And this edition? Hello georgous! If you want something that's makes a reread feel new simply becuse of how the book is done up? You find that her!
And if you just want something stunning, that's also easily found in this edition.
Yes it doesn't offer anything new to the well known classic, but to me it still worth it when it's a beautiful enough edition and I am pretty sure that there are not a lot of other editions that can take this one on!
This is one of my favorite books of all time and this edition, with it's beautiful watercolor pictures and flowers decorating the book inside and out, is just stunning. Definitely the type of book that tips you to buy the copy even when you already have 15 other copies of it. And if you don't already own pride and prejudice, I highly recommend you get it because it is such a beautiful book. And Maryolians beautiful artwork only adds to it's infinite beauty.
Thank you #netgalley for allowing me to reread and see this beautiful version of one of my favorite books.
As a part of the Marjolein Bastin Classics Series, this edition of Pride and Prejudice features beautiful illustrations in full colour on almost all pages, drawn by the talented Dutch artist Marjolein Bastin. The illustrations are quite detailed, and feature many floral motives, as well as birds and butterflies and other beautiful subjects. Despite not portraying actual scenes from the novel, these images manage to capture it accurately and make for an amazing reading experience. I found the novel even more pleasing on this reread, partially due to my change in taste over the last year, and also due to the sheer artistry of Bastin's drawings.
A classic for a reason, from the mother of romance herself.
Still somehow relevant and poignant, this was truly ahead of its time.
Funny, witty, sarcastic and sharp, but not any less sweet and lovely than you expect.
This is one of those books for me that I can pick up at any point in time and it'll put a smile on my face.
Memorable characters, that you either love or love to hate,
dialogue that stays with you, lessons you don't forget.
A classic for a reason.
A beautiful classic that was definitely deserving of a re-read from me. The added illustrations brought a whole other wonder to read to this story!
I’m not a fan of classic books, but Pride & Prejudice has always been the exception: Darcy and Elizabeth’s story captured my heart since I first read it years ago, and the stunning illustrations featured in this edition are a really nice addition to such an incredible book.
I will definitely buy a physical copy when it comes out!
Pride and Prejudice is a favorite of mine. I love this book and have read it several times.
I must admit that when I read that this edition was illustrated, I had hoped for illustrations of the characters. While there are none of those, this edition is quite lovely. The artwork is breathtaking in it’s simplicity. The detail of the flowers and bees was gorgeous and my favorites. And the cover is just beautiful. This is a wonderful edition to anyones library, and I just may have to find a physical copy for mine.
Thank you very much Netgalley for the opportunity to admire a digital copy of this edition!
This book, story, and the author needs no introduction. This is such a beautiful book and mother all the romance books. This edition is gorgeous and I am buying one for my bookshelf. The illustrations of flowers and butterflies are breathtaking. One must have it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I absolutely loved it. Austen is my favourite author so I read her books (AND use them in class) all the time. This is a fantastic edition which I'll be adding to my classes
I really enjoyed rereading Pride & Prejudice. It was much easier for me to read than usual with classics since I was already familiar with the story. Especially now with the pandemic, it was nice to escape to Longbourn and go to balls with the Misses Bennet.
As for this edition with illustrations by Marjolein Bastin. The illustrations of nature, flowers and birds are beautiful. However, they do not particularly add anything to the story. So if you are just looking for a beautiful edition of Pride & Prejudice, you might want to look at these editions.
I don't think I have to say a lot about the plot of *the* Jane Austen Classic so I'll talk about what makes this particular version special.
It is stunning. The illustrations on the cover give you a taste of what to expect inside, with the floral- and animal-themed watercolour drawings on about half of all text pages. Some are smaller-sized put in the corners, looking as if you have a garden flower pressed between the pages, while some illustrations take up half a page. An argument could be made that they are quite detached from the story itself but I really didn't mind that.
I would totally recommend this illustrated version of Pride and Prejudice to people, who love the book already and want to indulge with these illustrations and the added extras!
That artwork is delicate and vibrantly lovely and it really adds to the timeless wit and romance of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which is definitely one of my favorite books of all time.
I very much enjoyed the illustrations and think this would make a lovely gift in hardback form.
My thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing, Marjolein Bastin (for her beautiful art) and Netgalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book is so beautiful!! Pride and Prejudice is an absolutely beautiful story and the artwork here goes with it so well. It's so subtly pretty and feminine. A perfect pairing.
I love Jane Austen's work and I had to take a peak at these upcoming new special illustrated editions of her novels. Marjolein Bastin's illustrations are mostly nature-themed and generally speaking they fit the theme and vibe of the books. I can't wait to get my hands on the actual paper format!
I was provided an advanced digital copy of the book from the publisher via Netgalley for review purposes, all opinions are my own.
This edition of Pride and Prejudice is absolutely beautiful and I'm sure for any individual obsessed with gorgeous editions of books *cough... me... cough...* this will be a must.
My only disappointment is that there were no illustrations of character/images directly related to the story, the flower motifs flowed throughout.
If you're not a collector/book cover aficionado this is still the perfect edition to pick up and try Austen for the first time. Her stories are as beautiful as ever and what better escapism in these times than a Georgian ballroom?
A beautiful new edition of a well-loved classic.
Thanks NetGalley for giving me an ARC to review
I'm a big fan of Jane Austin! Pride and Prejudice is definitely one of my favorite book by her. Elizabeth Bennet is a character that inspires me with her fierceness. Mr. Darcy is a man that you both love and hate.
I was excited to get this illustrated version of this classic. Maryolein Baskin did a beautiful job! I enjoyed the colorful and elegant flowers, butterflies, and birds throughout the book. Each chapter had a designated flower for it.
I'm definitely going to buy a physical copy to add to my Jane Austen collection!
Pride and Prejudice is probably the most loved Regency romance from Jane Austen. This edition with full color flower and bee illustrations is absolutely beautiful. It evokes the experience of walking through gardens while gossiping about the suitability of potential love matches.
i have loved every form of pride and prejudice that i have read, and this one was no exception! the added maps and illustrations gave the story a completely new vibe and it was one that i was very, very interested in. the cover is gorgeous, and yet is still no match for what waits inside!
Pros: Pride and Prejudice is a favorite if not THE favorite book of my friends. Jane Austen is at her most brilliant.
Cons: NONE!
Although Pride and Prejudice is not new to me, this edition is! The illustrations are lovely. What Austen fan wouldn't want this new collection of classics?!
This edition is beyond beautiful. I can't wait to get my hands on the hardback version of it.
I already own a copy of Pride and Prejudice and I loved the book, it's the book that got me back int reading classics, prior to that they were intimidating, but since it is one of my favorite classics I think getting an edition as beautiful as this one would be fitting.
Not only are the cover and backfilled with delightful drawings, but each chapter also starts with an illustrated starting letter and you can find small treats in the form of illustrations spread through the pages. The illustrations arent of scenes or characters, they are birds, butterflies, and different plants and flowers.
I think this would be a great present for someone who plans on reading this classic or has already read it and loved it, I certainly would love to receive this edition as a gift.
This has always been one of my favorite books! I've read everything Jane Austen has written. Her writing style is so accessible and her stories always feature strong women. I mean as an avid reader, how could you not like a book with this quote? "I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." Overall I appreciate the character development in this book and the care that Austen takes creating her world.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for kindly providing me with a digital copy of this book for review.
My first encounter with Jane Austen was when I saw the BBC mini series of Pride and Prejudice in 1996 when I was 16 years old (the one with Colin Firth and that pond) . I loved that series so much (and still do) that it prompted me to delve into the original books written by Austen and a life long love and friendship with Austen’s writing was born. I class her as my favourite author and I re-read at least one of her novels every year. And of course I own many different editions of her novels and really don’t need any more in my life. I think I will however be seeking out this Marjolein Bastin illustrated edition and purchasing it, as I have fallen in love with her illustrations also.
For many years I listed Pride and Prejudice as my favourite novel, and it still remains one of my most beloved books, it’s certainly the book I have re-read the most. But as I’ve aged I think I’ve learned to appreciate Persuasion more, and I think that is probably now my favourite book. So if you’re planning on an illustrated edition of that Marjolein, then I couldn’t snatch it out of your hands quick enough!
As I have said in other reviews of Jane Eyre and Emma, which have also been illustrated by Marjolein, these illustrations are not depictions of scenes from the novels, they are more accent illustrations that really help to add an element of nature and seasons to the story. I was thinking hard of what the illustrations remind me of and I think it might be something like The Diary Of An Edwardian Lady. They are just beautiful and elegant drawings that really help to create a soft, graceful and almost whimsical aesthetic. I find it such a visually engaging experience as I read these stories which I know and love so well. Please do keep them coming Andrews McMeel Publishing and Marjolein Bastin.
What a gorgeous version of one of my favorite classics! With beautiful floral watercolors on each page, this would make the perfect gift for anyone - whether they are new to Jane Austen or already own a copy of the book. This would look lovely on anyone's coffee table or bookshelf.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is one of the greatest English books of all time. While there are several editions of the book, it is always fun to find new editions to see what people do differently.
I thought the flower illustrations were so beautiful. I always picture Elizabeth out in nature, and so I think the flowers were a beautiful touch.
I would buy this edition to add to my huge collection of Jane Austen novels. I am interested to see what the final product looks like.
I received an eARC from Andrew McMeel Publishing through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.
I heard about this book from the book called cyber spy the series. I loved this luxury classic book cover. When I read inside, I loved the protagonist elizabeth and her life style. This book take me back to the passed times. I must say I loved this book. Thanks to netgallery for giving me the free digital copy for review. Thanks Author Jane Austen.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
Few opening sentences capture the spirit of the novel quite like the beginning lines of Pride and Prejudice. Within this single sentence is contained Austen’s subtle, wry jab at the societal expectations of her era, as particularly portrayed through Mrs. Bennet; the exceptionally witty banter throughout the book; and a hint at the multiple romances that are to come.
Pride and Prejudice is the epitome of what I find makes a great romance novel—a cute, charming, swoon-worthy love story with just enough serious notes and tension to it to make it engaging, realistic, and relatable, no matter how many years go by since publication.
Austen excels as crafting individualized characters that are easy to quickly become attached to, stay true to their characterization throughout, and each have their own unique voice to set them apart from one another. Each character is multifaceted rather than shallow—such as Elizabeth’s level-headedness compared to her sisters being paired with her headstrong, spunky wit and tendency to be prideful—making for a realistic and memorable cast of characters.
The dialogue in this novel is exceptional as well; just as the characters’ personalities are unique, so are their voices, and it’s such a joy to read the witty banter that plays throughout the novel.
And the plot and writing style—so swoon-worthy and easy to fall into. You’ll find yourself swept up in regency-era high society country living as if you were there yourself, and feel like you too could find your own Mr. Darcy (or Mr. Bingley). But what truly makes this book so great is the depth to the storytelling; it’s not just balls and parlor rooms, but drama, misunderstandings, assumptions and breakdowns in communication that really keep the plotting tight and engaging.
This edition features gorgeous illustrations by Marjolein Bastin that bring a fresh, bright touch to the book—and I can only imagine it looks even more beautiful in person. Though they don’t have a direct relation to the plot, the floral designs feel like something any respectable high-society regency-era lady might produce. I can just imagine Georgiana Darcy painting these after a piano lesson (or Caroline Bingley doing so while silently judging Elizabeth’s lack of decorum).
I am really happy that through NetGalley I have discovered favorite classic stories illustrated by Marjolein Bastin. I do kind of wish some of the illustrations were of the characters or taken from scenes in the story, but despite that, the bright and lovely paintings of flowers, birds and butterflies really add something extra special to the story making this a gorgeous collector ‘s edition. A must have for any Austin fan.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Pride and Prejudice is my favourite book and my comfort read. To come across such a beautiful edition, had me craving to own a copy in my own hands.
Needless to say, Pride and Prejudice is the story of love, rather than romance between two people who develop a slow and gradual affection for each other as they muddle through their own pride and prejudice placed against the objects of their affection.
The gradualness of it all is what makes me fall in love with the book and that is the part I find myself reading over and over again.
Pride and Prejudice is hands down my all-time favorite classic. The beautiful floral and nature illustrations elevated the reading experience. Although the flowers/bird/bugs may not have correlated specifically with the story, the beauty of the hand-drawn illustrations were just stunning. My favorite illustrations were the florals depicted specifically at the beginning of Ch 49 and 55. The covers and end pages stole the show though!
Its a beautiful version of a classic. Would have liked to see more of a connection between the chapters and drawings. But i did like the style of the drawings. Pride and prejudice is one of the few book inhave several copies of. I think this one would be a good adition.

What's left to say about Pride and Prejudice? A classic for a reason (though I'm more of a Jane Eyre person myself) and beautifully illustrated, just not as much as I had expected. Beautiful first letters, illustrations of flowers and bees - a wondeful present for those who collect P&P or love the story.
*I am giving feedback based on illustrated version, not P&P itself.*
This book was beautifully illustrated and I think it would make a charming gift for any Austen lover in your life.
Pride and Prejudice is a book that I've read hundreds of times. No really, I think that estimation is fairly accurate. I read it once a year, at minimum. I read it when I'm sad, I read it when I want to feel happy, and I read it when I want to find a comfortable escape.
I mention all of that to set the table for my excitement here. I absolutely freaked out when I learned that there was a new print of Pride and Prejudice coming out – one with lovely illustrations created by Marjolein Bastin.
There is something so elegant yet luxurious about the designs that found their way onto the pages of this beloved book. They're not overpowering, and instead lean towards the delicate side of things. The precision in placement helps so much in this case, from adding weight to the end of chapters to filling blank space on a page.
In short, this version of Pride and Prejudice is perfect for fans new and old. For those that have read the book hundreds of times, and those that have always meant to pick it up and give it a try. It's especially perfect for those that love to collect beautiful books, and I know that I will be happily adding this one to my Pride and Prejudice shelf.
Gorgeous edidtion for anyone who wants to get into Jane Austen or anyone who already loves her.
About the story:
What can I say that hasn't already been said?
I can only tell you, that I am a huge fan of Jane Austen and her stories.
About the art:
The art is a beautiful addition to the story. The small details in the corner of the pages and on the edges, the illustrated letters at the beginning of each chapter and the gorgeous flowers at the end of the chapter are a nearly perfect addition to the story. The only thing I would have wished for was, that the art reflected the seasons throughout the story. Since the time span of the novel is about a year, it would have been a great opportunity to show the passing of the seasons not just in the story but also in the art.
Apart from that this edition is beatuiful and I may have to buy it myself. It would be a lovely addition to my Jane Austen Colection.
This book is a perfect addition to any growing classics collection
4.5/5 stars
Pride and Prejudice is my all time favourite classic! This book has a special place in my heart and Jane Austen is the one author that got me into reading classics and mostly loving them. The book itself will get all the bright 🌟🌟 there are from me every single time. Needless to say, when I saw that a new illustrated version of the book was being published and an e-Arc was up for grabs on NetGalley, I grabbed it! So what are my thoughts about the illustrations? Visually it looks pretty, colourful and vibrant with illustrations of the different flowers, bees and butterflies interspersed at the edges and the end of each chapter within the text. I love the look of front and back cover design with it dark background covered with flowers and gold glitter giving it a gothic, magical look and the book will look lovely as a printed copy. However, to be honest when I saw that the book will be an illustrated version, I expected it to contain illustrations of different characters and scenes from the book, was looking forward to seeing them and was disappointed when I didn't find any. I think it should be considered for any future editions.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Andrews McMeel Publishing for the e-Arc of the book.

This is a truly beautiful edition of one of my favourite books of all time, Pride and Prejudice. It gave it another layer of romance and beauty that only enhanced the reading experience. I loved the flowers and the butterflies in the corners and all the pretty colours. Truly and enriched reading experience.
This is a book I would love to have on my shelf. The illustrations and detailing is beautiful. Pride and Prejudice is the first Jane Austen novel I read and it continues to be one of my all time favourite stories. Surprisingly I don't have a physical copy anymore but I will definitely be treating myself to this edition.
I LOVE PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, I have read many editions of this book. My rating for this book is not for the book itself but the edition.
I must say that I love the front cover, back cover and endpaper illustrations in this edition although none of these illustrations is inherently a part of the book. All these could very well fit in with any other book. Still, this is one of the pretty classics editions and a worthy buy.
The great Classic text by Jane Austen that we all grew up with and loved. Just this re-mastered edition has beautiful flowers to bring color to some of the pages to be pleasing to the reader. Great read for all nothings different besides that they have clean colorful flowers on the pages.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books ever.
I wish I had this gorgeous edition when I first read it.
Absolutely stunning.
Thanks to Netgalley for the copy. I hadn’t read this before and this gave me the motivation to read it. Unfortunately with the format I didn’t even read this one and ended up listening to it. Glad I finally read it.
Y’all. If you love #janeausten #prideandprejudice then you need this beautifully done copy. My heart. The #illustration is done by #marjoleinbastin it’s very unusual for me to actually “buy” a hardcover of the book once #netgalley so kindly approves me but this one will definitely be added to my bookshelf. It’s absolutely gorgeous. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #readersofig #booklover #bookrecommendations
As someone who loves to collect beautiful books (inside and out), this beautiful edition of Pride and Prejudice can be added to those ranks. Marjolein Bastin has beautifully illustrated this all time classic with gorgeous flowers, birds, and butterflies. The rich purple, pink and blue hues are most appreciated on the stunning cover, but within its pages, hide small treasures, reminiscent of finding pressed flowers in one of your mother's or grandmother's books. Visually stunning!
A great new version of one of classic literature’s best books! Highly recommend! Thank you so much for this advanced book!
Beautiful nature illustrations fill this lovely copy of Pride and Prejudice. This is something that, of course, would be much more stunning on the page but I enjoyed looking through the electronic copy I was given. I thought the illustrations of two (love)birds at the end of happy/romantic chapters was a really cute way to interact with the text. I would have preferred to see illustrations of the characters and setting, but I think this will make a beautiful copy of Jane Austen’s novel..
Pride and Prejudice
This is my first time reading Pride and Prejudice. I had the opportunity to listen to
Rosamund Pike and read along with this beautiful ebook version.
Thanks to Netgalley for this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
The illustrations were just perfect, sprinkled throughout but not overwhelming. It definitely added to my overall reading reading experience.
10/10 would recommend!
A beautifully illustrated version of a great classic. I can only imagine how stunning this will be in a physical copy as the digital version I bet doesn't do the fabulous illustrations justice
Pride & Prejudice was a seminal reading experience for me. It, in many ways, guided me to where I am now in that it set me on the path of studying English literature. I devoured all of Jane Austen's books and the Brontës were next on my list. Jane Eyre was a revelation, as it continues to be for many readers, in how it broke with tradition and gave the reader an insight into a fascinating mind. I have ended up re-reading these books countless of times and I have discovered new ideas and themes each time. So naturally I find myself poring over various editions, always looking for those new angles. The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series was the latest. I will be reviewing these two together, since this review will mainly focus on design and layout, rather than the texts themselves. Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for the copies of the books in exchange for an honest review.
There is something about both Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre that provided something of a roadmap for me. Neither Elizabeth or Jane are considered particularly beautiful or accomplished, but they're both determined, proud and stubborn. They have their own ideas about the world and society they find themselves in. Where Elizabeth is very free with her opinions, Jane often keeps her opinions to herself and the reader, unless provoked. They are what I imagine "strong female characters" to be, strong in themselves, aware of their strengths and limitations, and not cowed by the powers that be. As such, I find the key imagery of "things that grow" quite fitting. Just like nature, both Elizabeth and Jane continue to grow, to develop and to flower and bloom in their own way. They are also both extraordinarily fond of nature, of the freedom it offers them as otherwise rather sheltered women. The purple tones for the cover of Pride & Prejudice struck me particularly, the perfect balance between warmth and cold, the passionate back and forth between hate and love. I was less enamoured with the soft tones on the Jane Eyre cover, but I can't deny it is very eye-catching.
The font and text size of both Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre are supremely readable. There is a nice, gentle slope to the font that I found very pleasing. There are also watercolour illustrations throughout both editions which are charming but occasionally felt a bit out-of-place. Perhaps I am biased by other illustrated editions, but I think I would have preferred more topical illustrations myself. At times these editions almost felt twee, a little too cutesy for their topics. However, the illustrations are undeniably beautiful and well-placed. I'm not quite sure whether it was due to my own copy, but I wasn't able to read or view the ephemera mentioned in the blurb. However, it sounds delightful. As such, these Marjolein Bastin Classics Series' editions would make stunning gifts for any Austen or Brontë fan! I myself know many reades who I would gladly gift this too.
The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series' editions of Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre are beautifully illustrated and very well designed. They are very readable and as long as the watercolour flower imagery works for you, you will find the reading experience very satisfying.
