Description

How does the saying go? Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you . . .

For Ruth, a new mother recovering from postpartum psychosis, every day is difficult and, after months spent hearing voices in the walls and trusting no one, she’s no longer confident in her own judgement. Neither, it seems, is anyone else.

So, when she hears a scream from the local petrol station one night, she initially decides it must be her mind playing tricks again. The police, too, are polite but firm: she must stop calling them every time she thinks she hears something. And her husband is frustrated; he’d hoped Ruth was getting better at last.

Ruth can’t quite let it go. What if there was a scream? What if it was someone in trouble? Someone who needs Ruth’s help?

Exploring the dark and isolating side of motherhood, the question at the heart of Rebecca Whitney's The Hidden Girls is how much you can help someone else when you can’t trust anyone—even yourself . . .

How does the saying go? Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you . . .

The Hidden Girls by Rebecca Whitney is a taut psychological thriller that held me in its grasp. I will be adding this author's previous novel to my TBR immediately.

Ruth is a new mother who is suffering from postpartum psychosis. Hearing voices in the wall, she is beginning to question her own sanity. When she hears screams coming from a petrol station and reports it to the police, she is met with disbelief and frustration from both her husband and law enforcement. Is Ruth's mind playing tricks on her, or is she the only one who can help another soul in distress?

This is a craftily plotted thriller that will keep you turning the pages with varying levels of tension, frustration and empathy.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for the opportunity to read and review an ARC of this title.

This book is all about a new mother named Ruth. Having just given birth to her baby she starts suffering
from postpartum psychosis and that is when her life starts to turn upside down. Her doctors are watching her, and her husband is on consistent alert just in case she does something crazy to herself and her baby. The only down side is that Ruth knows this and knows that most of these things aren't real... but what if they are? And it is that thought that stays with her all of the time. Things really take a downward spiral for her when she starts hearing voices coming from her walls and she starts to question herself. It isn't until one evening when Ruth hears screaming coming from a gas station and reports it to the polices. The police however downplay it along with her husband saying that this never happened and it is simply her mind playing tricks on her. Ruth however isn't so sure and can't shake the feeling that something wrong is happening, and if she is wrong what is really going on with her but if she is right who is going to help this person when the only one capable of doing so no
one believes. I found that parts of this novel just flew by and I got so into what was happening that I couldn't put it down. Very interesting read, I'm so glad that I got the chance to check it out. This book skyrockets Rebecca Whitney to the top of my must read thriller writers and I couldn't be happier to add a new one. Check out this book you won't be disappointed.
