Description
A practical, engaging resource about the moral, spiritual, and cultural values that shape our lives and society for families, children's church groups and schools to share, explore, and respond with children together.
Based on the successful and cherished stories from The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book and The Lion Storyteller Animal Tales by Bob Hartman, interactive elements work alongside the original stories to encourage children to think, engage, and make connections with their lives.
Writing elements and questions relevant to school and family life encourage a shared reading and discussion experience for children with adults.
Includes optional links to Bible references and pause moments to think about situations and others with God.
Through these retelling of traditional and modern stories, the values explored include establishing good relationships, treating others well, perseverance, responding to bullying, team-working, and many other society and Christian values.
Explore the setting, characters, and situation in these stories, thinking about how you would react in the same situation, and developing empathy and respect for others.
There is an index list for the values covered in the stories for easy-to-use reference.
A useful resource for school assemblies and PSHE lessons on relationships and citizenship, and to support parents, carers, church group leaders to share values with children.

I loved this book! It’s engaging and easily understandable to little ones. I would recommend this book for families or even a gift for friends with little ones.
This book is filled with stories for kids each with a specific value to teach kids.
There are also a lot of great talking points for the adults to bring up during and after reading. I didn't originally realize this book is religious, but it is written from a Christian perspective and there are Bible verses to correspond to the stories.
Many thanks to Lion Children's Books and NetGalley for the advance copy.
The Lion Storyteller Family Values SAMPLE by Bob Hartman, Krisztina Kallai Nagy (Illustrator) uses folk tales to illustrate essential character traits we would like to share with our children. Suggestions are given in each short story (about three pages in length) to make the story more interactive and engaging. These tips captured the attention of my son and then by using the discussion tips after the story we were able to have an insightful conversation about the importance of perseverance and not giving up when things are difficult. As 30 stories are included in this collection I think it would be ideal to share one a day as part of your family devotional time or bedtime routine. The illustrations are also quite lovely and provide richness to this experience for both the adults and children.
I was provided a free advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review from Net Galley. The opinions shared in this review are my own.
This sample was enough to give me positive impressions of the book’s content. There are plenty of learning opportunities that are also fun between adult and child. Children may enjoy the prompts to act out the stories.
This sample was a perfect snapshot of what to expect in the full version. What a wonderful opportunity for adult and child to discuss the thoughts and feelings of different scenarios. Would love a physical copy of this.
This is a lovely book. Both myself and my children really enjoyed this real. It was a lovely story and I can’t wait to read it to my class when we return to school.
This is a great resource that packs a big punch. The pictures are engaging and the stories are short enough to read a few before bedtime, but could also easily be expanded upon using the different supplemental resources.
I appreciated the information section at the beginning that lays out all of the features provided within the stories. As a teacher, I am frequently offering suggestions to parents about how to add some skill building to their nightly storytimes with their children. It can be hard to think of questions and connections while reading a story to children - particularly new stories, and the way that this book so seamlessly embeds those leading questions makes it feel natural and part of the experience. There were so many great conversation starters that could add interest for older children, or be skipped over for younger ones. Cultural connections were also great to spark some new interests in children and make connections to previous experiences. I appreciated the addition of the bible passages that could connect to the stories - to add an additional religious education component for stories and lessons, but also appreciated that these aspects weren't so prominent that the text couldn't be used in a classroom setting. I could easily see reading this book to my children at home, and adding a few of the stories as group read-alouds in my preschool classroom.
What an interesting sample! I will definitely buy this book.
This is a book of world stories with added value. I never thought that folktales can be linked to our faith, but the authors made it! Learned so much from a few stories given in the book.
Another thing I found interesting, was the guide at some points of the story, asking us to think why this and that, and also at the end of the story, to be discussed with adults.
The writing style and art is much better than I expected for a short children's book, and the stories clearly worked as fables but weren't as easy to figure out as they usually are in this kind of "fables for kids" collection. Great fun, well worth reading if you're a parent or a child.
