What a cute romantic comedy book! I absolutely adore this. It’s very girl meets boy in a destination spot but with a ring of truth. I highly recommend it I think a lot of people who enjoy this one
I love Laura Jane Williams’ books! The Love Square got me hooked first and now The Lucky Escape. The character development in this book was so incredibly good, I found myself constantly rooting for Annie and for the happiness that she truly deserved! 4 stars!
How nice it would have been to have read The Lucky Escape on a sunny beach abroad instead of in a miserable UK lockdown! It’s a classic beach read, particularly with a great deal of the novel being set in Australia, and a romantic plot with a lovely protagonist you can root for. While I always appreciate when genre fiction reaches beyond patriarchal traditional tropes, I did feel like this was trying to hard to be diverse, with lots of pointed references to friends and colleagues of the (white straight cis) protagonist who are Black, or gay, or use non-cis pronouns. I just think it could have been subtler, but I really do enjoy a romance novel, like this one, that I can be sure has a good heart!
I absolutely loved this book and found the main character Annie very real. A lot of the book happens in Australia which was lovely to read on cold winter days during lockdown - lifted my mood no end.
A light hearted, fun read which I would highly recommend.
I loved it so much that I'm going to get the author's previous book The Love Square.
A great wee escape.
Absolutely loved this! Laura is fast becoming my fave “chick lit” author. Loved seeing Annie’s “awakening” and realising her self worth and absolutely loved the chemistry between her and Patrick, it quite literally leapt off the page. Every book I’ve read by Laura has been a pleasure and this was no difference. Thanks to Avon, the author and Netgalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I received a digital ARC from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The first thing that crossed my mind after finishing this novel is that I should definitely read the author’s other books. I believe if they are as good as this one then I’ll be hooked for life because at this moment I’m over the moon because of this read. It is comforting, romantic, and dreamy, and everything I wanted my last 2020 read to be.
The Lucky escape is a coming of age narrative that tackles womanhood and healthy relationships through its protagonist Annie Wiig. Annie is a self-conscious woman. She’s a victim of her proud, superficial, perfectionist mother who always criticized her for everything she did, and made her feel not good enough. That ingrained self-worthlessness and low self-esteem accompanied Annie to her adulthood, and made her stay in a toxic relationship merely for fear of being alone. Her relationship with Alexander had imbalanced power dynamics where she actively tried to earn his approval, and does everything right in order to keep him in her life. It ticks all of the elements of unhealthy relationships. However, things change when he leaves her at the altar, and she realizes that it’s about time she figured her life out and changed for the better.
In finding love and enjoying adventure, she metamorphoses into an incredible autonomous self-asserted woman. Through the whole of her journey, we get to grasp the little steps she takes to achieve her transformation, the fears brewing in her as a thirty years old woman, and how societal norms shape them.
Annie’s connection to her friends offers an insight into good friendships. The core four are tentative, supportive, and great listeners. They help her out figuring out her emotions, but not too much, they overstep their boundaries or try to overwhelm her with their opinions. As for her love interest, Patrick, he’s just the perfect person for her; he’s perfect in general (ugh! I am biased I know!). He’s funny, carefree, and sensitive. He’s confident, and compassionate, and they fit perfectly together. There is no beating around the bush with him. He communicates his emotion, and responds rather than reacts when she rocks the boat. It is obvious that his attachment style is secure, and he, sure, knows how to navigate relationships unlike Annie whose attachment style is anxious. Patrick is good for her because he inspires her to be herself and seize the moment. Gradually, Annie builds a backbone and learns to express herself authentically.
As women it feels like life ends once we hit thirty, and that only through marriage and family that we can truly worth something in this life, but the author subverts such a misogynistic ideology and lays out alternatives to such stereotypical gender roles.
In The Lucky Escape, we have different narratives that tackle female adulthood. Every friend symbolizes a variant definition of happiness, yet all of them contribute to the belief that there isn’t a single way to find it. We do make our own choices, and we’re allowed to pursue whatever serves us best, and makes our lives fulfilling. There is no right way to do it; whether through marriage, adoption, singlehood, work, or love. Every choice is valid, and as long as it stems from self-actualization and individual happiness.
I love the feminist undertone of the novel, and I do appreciate the author for delivering such a message because we need to constantly be reminded of that.
All in all, I love the plotline, and the characterization. It’s fluffy and romantic, and it warms my heart thinking that there is more to life than we think, that good things can happen out of the blue, that sometimes, bad things are just a blessing in disguise. Annie’s story gives me hope about love and self-growth. The author’s portrayal of her characters is well-crafted. They are flawed, interesting, multi-faceted, emotionally intelligent, and safe. They are a token of healthy relationships, and mature, dependent individuals
I enjoyed this book. It tells the story of Annie, jilted on her wedding day to her longtime university boyfriend.
The story looks at how Annie moves on from this, throwing herself into exercise and meeting an old friend in the process.
I liked the character of Patrick and found this a really enjoyable escape.
Great book! The perfect book to end 2020 and start 2021 with. I loved reading about Annie’s adventures in Australia. I have to be honest - I was quite cynical at the start of the book (for the first half really....). I was thinking:
‘This idiot definitely somehow knew she got jilted and has set himself up for a free holiday.’
‘I’m 30% of the way through and she still hasn’t gone to australia.’
‘WHY would she take him and not her best single friend ? “The core four were not convinced by the whole Patrick shebang” - I bet they werent!’
But. It redeemed itself. Annie is a likeable character (even if I’m not 100% persuaded by Patrick - there’s something weird about him). It made my want to find a personal trainer / bootcamp class to kick myself up the bum for the new year. I am also dying to visit Australia - maybe on a cheaper budget though!
Most of all, the book makes you question what changes you might need to make in your own life - and how you might find the courage to make those changes. Making it the perfect book for the new year.
I’ve now read three of Laura Jane Williams’ books and this is the best one yet. While ‘Our Stop’ and ‘The Love Square’, were perfectly lovely, something about ‘The Lucky Escape’ made my heart hurt the best way.
It might have been the funny and sweet protagonist I really connected with, or her sweet relationship with her sister, or wonderful Patrick, or the slow build relationship... all these things really worked for me and made this book a wonderful, heartwarming story.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Such a cute romantic comedy. Lighthearted and heartwarming. I love the storyline of the cancelled wedding and extra honeymoon ticket, and this book delivered on that!
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Sometimes life just doesn't work out the way you thought it was going to, and that is exactly what The Lucky Escape by Lauren Jane Williams is all about! Shout out to Annie for saying yes to everything after being left at the altar!
This was a fun story with great characters. The plot was a bit different than many popular tropes. Great story nevertheless.
I absolutely adore Laura Jane Williams' books - and I think that this may be my favourite one yet.
Annie is a strong character -- one who is flawed, yet believable, and who honestly feels like she could be your BFF. I also loved the way that the reader got to see her through different lenses: the Annie who was out with the Core Four, the Annie around her mum, the Annie around Freddie, the Annie at work and the Annie with Patrick.
It all begins when she's set to marry Alexander, but she's left standing at the altar by her 'Mr. Right'. Unsure about how she got things so wrong, Annie runs into an old friend - Patrick. He reminders her of how she used to be, and she makes a big decision to say yes to every opportunity from then onwards. Which makes things a bit more complicated when he offers to come with her on her not-a-honeymoon-honeymoon -- after all, there's a spare ticket now, right? And she did promise she'd say yes to everything...
The story between Patrick and Annie developed in a way that actually seemed very realistic, given the circumstances that they found themselves in. I loved the way that the characters grew - both as individuals and as a couple - and absolutely flew through this in a day. It's the kind of warm, comforting read that we definitely need.
This book is going to be a huge summer hit. I devoured it so fast. As you have come to expect from a Laura Jane Williams book it’s full of action, emotions and a cracking plot. 100% recommended.
Fab quick read about a girl who is jilted at the altar. This is a lovely piece of escapism, set mainly in Australia as she heads there on her honeymoon (without the groom).
I found it really enjoyable, fun and with the perfect happy ever after.
I would recommend, thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Annie has been left jilted at the altar by Alexander and weeks later, has a chance encounter with Patrick, an old friend from summer camp. When her ex-in-laws embarrassed by their son's behaviour, encourage her to take the honeymoon, she takes Patrick along in an effort to let go and have some fun and possibly mend her broken heart.
I am a huge Laura Jane Williams fan - Our Stop and The Love Square were brilliant and this is her best yet. These characters are so incredibly likeable and I found myself rooting for them all the way through. This was funny, cute and soppy. A perfect read.
When Annie is jilted on her wedding day she is lost and doesn't know what to do. Off work, she joins the local boot camp, where she bumps in to Patrick, an old friend from their childhood drama camps. They soon become friends again and he joins her on her honeymoon in Australia so she doesn't have to travel on her own. They are havin a great time, but will they become more than friends?
The lucky escape is just what it entitles! A perfect way to escape the madness of Christmas and get lost in a book. Annie is a wonderful girl who is relatable to most, she spends all her time and efforts trying to please other people and be who they want her to be. That is until Patrick comes along and fills her world with colour. I love Patrick and I think if you don’t fall a little bit in love with him yourself, there is something wrong! He is charming and kind hearted, which is a lovely to see the male stereotype challenged! I would definitely recommend this book! I read it in one day!
Fun, clever, witty and wonderful... there's a reassuring warmth and wisdom to LJW's story-telling that enfolds you from the onset one and carries you throughout. She has done it again! Absolutely brilliant. Highly recommended.
Out June 24, this will make the perfect summer read! The Lucky Escape is funny, sweet, romantic and is all about second chances! I haven’t read anything else by Laura Jane Williams, but I loved her writing!!
I really loved the main character, Annie, and her willingness to start over and take chances, even though her life was turned upside down. She was really relatable and I was rooting for her throughout the whole story!
I thought Annie found her perfect match in Patrick. While his past was heartbreaking, it helped explain who he was and his outlook on life. I loved how he challenged Annie and made her look at life differently than she ever had. I loved the way the author developed their relationship. It didn’t feel forced or cheap, as is often the case in most romance novels.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It was a really quick read and I’ll definitely be checking out more books from this author!
Four heartfelt + wanderlust + darling stars to this novel by Laura Jane Williams. I loved her previous book, Our Stop, and was thrilled to receive the advance reader copy of her latest work. Due out next summer, this sweet and smart novel is the perfect escape! Annie, a London scientist, is due to marry her uni sweetheart, Alexander, when he leaves her at the altar....crying in her wedding dress and all. Her life is turned upside down as she reevaluates all the choices she’s made and things she thought she knew. By chance, she runs into an old friend from high school, Patrick, and on a whim, invites him to accompany her on her dream 3 week honeymoon in Australia. Patrick is suffering from his own losses and together the two help each other heal by recognizing the joy, wonder and beauty of new experiences and travel. They each embrace that hope can exist simultaneously with grief- a poignant message that really resonated with me given our current world.
I flew through this one- loved the messy, imperfect characters, the personal growth they experienced, the chemistry between them, and the gorgeous descriptions of Australia. This book filled my heart and made me yearn for travel!
Put this on your TBR list and check out the author’s other books too- you won’t be disappointed! Thank you to Netgalley + Avon Books UK for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Lucky Escape was a quick, easy read that was somewhat predictable, but that I actually really enjoyed. It was a breath of fresh air from what I normally read, and it kept my attention throughout the whole story. I liked the characters and found myself rooting for them from the beginning. Definitely would recommend!
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams was a truly lovely book! This book starts out when Annie is left almost at the alter on her wedding day. I cannot imagine how you would begin to cope, but Annie gets out from under the duvet and through a workout class reconnects with a friend from camp, Patrick. When the world's sweetest almost mother-in-law insists Annie go on the paid for honeymoon, she does with Patrick. The two set off as just friends on an extravagant Australian honeymoon washing away all the cold and wet of Autumn in London. If this was a different type of book or Williams was a different author it would end on the glorious honeymoon. What I enjoy about this book is that it doesn't. We travel back to London with Annie and get to see her sorting her life out. While The Lucky Escape is a love story, it feels so much more modern. Annie prioritizes relationships with friends and family and we see her grow into her own! It also includes a blossoming relationship and plenty of romcom elements, but it has depth for even the least romcom inclined!
The Lucky Escape is a journey of self-discovery after the end of a relationship. Laura Jane Williams writes beautifully and tells a story of personal growth beautifully.
I was given a NetGalley Arc in exchange for review.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams was at first glance a fluffy chick lit book. But, at the true heart of the book were great truths shared that we all need to hear. Annie was on the brink of finding her happily ever after with her boyfriend of nine years, Alexander. He changes his mind and Annie falls to pieces.
This leads Annie to take a literal journey far from home, but also to undergo deep reflection. Annie examines everything about herself from where she works, lives, exercises, and even her relationship with her mother. She wonders about her nature as a people pleaser and decides to not let her fears stop her from finding love again. I know my default is to prove my worth by how well I look after those in my care and often on the list of priorities I come in last. Annie’s courage rubbed off a bit on me and I have moved my needs way up on my long to-do list.
I also loved this advice from her grandmother about how “life’s lows are so entwined, the happiness and sorrow is so interconnected that it’s impossible to be totally happy or totally sad....we can’t outrun the crappy, awful, horrible stuff. So the job of our lives is to let it exist alongside the good stuff, making the good stuff so much sweeter.”
This book had an enjoyable cast of characters with sometimes laughable and sometimes heart wrenching side storylines. I enjoyed seeing how her friends and family grew and changed throughout the story. Her friends and family were true to life and reminded me of people I have known and loved. They all had satisfying character arcs, and were very well written.
At the end of the book I felt almost as if I had attended a few counseling sessions as the struggles Annie has are relatable to most women. But, the book at its true core was entertaining and a fun read, not a preachy self-help book. It was another excellent book from the author of Our Stop and The Love Square. Laura Jane Williams will become one of your favorite new authors also.
I was provided a free advance reader copy from Avon Books UK in exchange for my honest review on Net Galley. The opinions shared in this review are my own.
This book was a very lighthearted read, with a plot that was easy to follow and enjoyable. Although the plot was kind of unrealistic, I still enjoyed the book. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC.
I read an ARC of The Love Square recently and it didn't do it for me. This one, however, was adorable and a lot deeper than I anticipated. The current synopsis made it sound like a light frothy fun read, and while there is definitely a lot of that to be had, there were also deeper themes about loving yourself and being present in the moment.
Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams a five-star read that you should run away with. This was exactly what I needed, we just seem to have been living in a never-ending year this year, it brightened my day no end, I have been one of the lucky ones who has stayed in work all during the year as I am one of those annoying people that keep the health care wheel moving. I have been so much luckier than lots of people but still it has taken a toll, this story just gave me the oomph I needed to realise that you can only say yes and be the helpful person for so long, sometimes you need to say yes for you and you only. My goodness what I would wish to run away to Australia, I even tried to persuade my hubby it is a good idea, we didn’t get a proper honeymoon all those years ago so who knows maybe next year we will have our moment. If you need something light and life affirming, then you need this story in your life. If you just want funny and entertaining then you also need this in your life, basically if you are looking for something amazing pick it up. I didn't think you could get better that Our stop, but this proved me wrong.
This book was a very quick and easy read and I really enjoyed it. I loved the concept of the story and I really liked the characters too. It was amazing how all the people in the spa said their pronouns that they wanted to be used, very current and I’m so glad it was included.
It was nice to read an adult genre story that still focused on putting yourself first, no matter your age. It was lovely to see the main characters story evolve and gradually learn to overcome their fears with one another. A very sweet read!
Thanks for the early copy. I’m a huge Laura Jane Williams fan and always love her books for a must pack when going on holiday. This book would be perfect to read on a sun lounger but I enjoyed it just as much for some escapism in this mad time we are in just now.
It was such a feel good, page turning romance with some hot scenes, laugh out moments and the brilliant set of characters that come with each of LJW’s books. Loved it! 5*
Wow. This was SO sweet. 3.5 stars rounded to 4 because I* fell in love with Patrick. Just stupidly in love with him. This was such a breath of fresh air. WE LOVE OPEN COMMUNICATION. Pacing was great, the love and the squishy heart moments were great, I smiled so much reading this.
Thank you a BILLION to the publisher for this advanced copy 🖤

It’s Annie’s wedding day! All the planning, coordinating, friends and family gathered, makeup and hair done...she is ready to get out of the limo and make her way down the aisle! When she gets out, her wedding planner tells her that she received a text from the groom and he isn’t coming. Annie picks up the pieces of her shattered life. She starts working out to get out her aggressions and bumps into an old acquaintance from theater camp. Patrick reminds Annie of who she used to be before she changed to fit how her ex-finance wanted her to be. She remembers it’s nice to laugh and not plan every detail of your life once in a while. Her ex-in-laws insist she takes the all expenses paid honeymoon they had arranged to Australia. She only has one problem, there is a spare ticket. She talks Patrick into going with her as friends. They have so many fun adventures and laugh out loud moments it had me wishing for a vacation! Is she imagining it or is she starting to like who she is again and the side of her that Patrick brings out? This book was just adorable. I loved Annie and really connected with her.
This book had everything which I look for in my bedtime reading....warm and likeable characters, humour, love and a perfect ending. I didn’t even mind the somewhat unbelievable plot....it’s escapism and fun so who cares?! The main character, Annie, is on a journey of self discovery throughout this book and I particularly liked the way her own personal story unfolded. An easy and enjoyable read...I’d definitely recommend it.
Absolutely LOVED this book. Love Laura Jane Williams writing after following her for years, have been on one of writing courses and read all of her previous titles and The Lucky Escape was another fantastic read. I started a few days ago and just couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and I loved how relatable the issues of the main characters were, the exploration of family dynamics and the way the book took lots of twists and turns. I really enjoyed the concept of going on your honeymoon after being dumped too!
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Honestly, I LOVED this! Having read Our Stop and The Love Square, I knew I would at least like this novel from Laura Jane Williams.
It just felt so refreshing and so NOW. The characters went on a journey, the self-reflection was open and honest, and the inclusive nature of the characters in the book didn’t feel forced or like a box ticking exercise (the staff at the spa simply introduced themselves using their chosen pronouns for example). The book felt like it was split into 3 sections and I definitely loved the first 2./3 more but I knew a rockier last third was coming - as obviously things can't be all roses!
It did take me a little while to fall into reading it - but purely because the formatting for the kindle app meant sentences didn't fill the complete line and were broken up - I assume this will be fixed for when it is published!
I have to say, I fell I love with Patrick myself and although his character took a step off the path with his reactions towards the end - we could at least understand why due to what we find out about him. He definitely has taken over my love for Leon from The Flatshare
READ READ READ THIS!
A Raucous Romp....
Some heart warming and wholly entertaining escapism in this fluffy, fun Romcom that you just cannot help but enjoy. A likeable protagonist and a colourful cast of supporting characters populate the plot. A raucous romp with some armchair travel included. A great stress buster.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. Annie is left at the altar. After a few devastating weeks, she is finally able to come out of her hole. At her local bootcamp, she runs into a long, lost, summer camp buddy. They hit it off immediately. Her ex in-laws gift her the honeymoon she was supposed to go on, saying it was non-refundable and it was the least they could do! Annie and her new reunion decide to head off together for the non-honeymoon for 3 weeks in Australia. What happens next is anyone's guess. This was a really cute book! #theluckyescape #laurajanewilliams #june2021
This was a fun British/Australian rom-com with some female empowerment included. I loved reading about the trips to Australia and Antwerp - such beautiful settings!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
This story was just so sweet and charming and a lovely surprise. While I had the pleasure of reading Laura Jane William's last book, 'Our Stop', I wasn't sure what to expect from this one and, in summary, I loved it. Williams did a great job of creating dynamic characters with whom audiences could connect. Annie served as a smart and well-rounded heroine whose development throughout was both natural and empowering. I will definitely be seeking out Williams' further novels, as she has found the right formula for creating a sweet and engaging story.
Annie is having a good day, it is, after all, her wedding day. So why is the wedding planner outside the church? Alexander , the groom, texted the wedding planner to say he wasn't coming. Annie was left at the altar. As she tries to get through the days she joins an exercise class and reconnects with Patrick who she sort of knew at summer camp years before. Patrick convinces Annie that he would be the perfect person to join her on her paid for honeymoon in Australia. Annie discovers things about herself and what she really wants. But is the new Annie the real Annie. A story of love and loss and being the person you really want to be.
Wonderful author absolutely loved this story,Was involved from the first pages the setting characters that came alive. Will be recommending,#netgalley#avonbooksuk
Absolutely loved this! Laura Jane Williams writing is like talking to a best friend. I gel with her style so well.
Even though I could predict what was going to happen from very early on, I found this didn’t matter as I was more interested in seeing the journey and how the characters got there.
The character of Annie was brilliant, and I fell in love with her relationship with her sister.
Annie is left standing at the alter, devastated and bewildered. She meets an old school friend and decides to take the chance of a lifetime by going on her ‘honeymoon’ to Australia with him. A quick little love story where you are definitely hoping for the best for Annie. I enjoyed this light hearted, feel good story and would recommend.
Loved getting to read Annie's story and see how everything turned out for her. Definitely think this will resonate with a lot of people as I'm sure many people have felt how she did throughout the book. Couldn't stop reading it once I started! Definitely recommend reading this book!
This was such a sweet little romance! It's a fast read and I really enjoyed the characters. The story was predictable but I still loved it and would recommend.
A heartwarming romantic read perfect for an escape whether on a summer holiday or relaxing by a cosy fire. Maybe a little drawn out and predictable in places but nonetheless a good lighthearted, fun and entertaining read. There was also a more serious of being true to oneself and not pleasing everyone else and learning to live for the moment. Lighthearted, fun and entertaining read with good characters who developed throughout. Good relatable characters who developed over the course of the book .
Really enjoyed this story and everything it brought to me. The will they wont they is beautifully written and leaves you questioning it right till the crucial moment!
This was good? I don’t know why, but I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time I was reading this. I kept thinking this is so cute, but then wondering when Patrick would turn out to be horrible. Spoiler, he never does. Sadly, I think that took away a bit of my enjoyment. But I did enjoy the growth our heroine went through; it seemed both realistic and positive.
This was a wonderful weekend read! I enjoyed getting transported to Australia with the little details in the book. The characters had great chemistry and the story unfolded at a pace that kept you wanting to read the next chapter! I would like to read. sequel about these characters to see what happens next!
The Lucky Escape was a cute romantic comedy with a little bit of escapism! It felt a little like I was on a tropical vacation to Australia along with Annie and Patrick (which would be SO nice right now). I very much enjoyed reading the love story, as well as Annie's journey to become more "herself", more like the freer Annie that Patrick had previously known.
I really enjoyed this book! I almost gave up on it because it wasn't formatted for Kindle and that made it super hard to get into. But then the story took over, and I got lost in it. It was fun to escape to new countries while being treated at home during a pandemic, and I loved that Patrick was able to refer to himself as the manic pixie dream girl. The romance felt very believable and didn't have that insta quality that you offered have to overcome. I fully recommend this as an enjoyable, escapist read.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for allowing me to read a copy of this book!
Annie has been left at the alter by her long term boyfriend, Alexander. She is left uncertain and confused, wondering how she managed to get it so wrong.
After a chance meeting with a man from her past, Annie makes a spontaneous decision to take him on her honeymoon. Annie and Patrick spend their trip together in Australia, both committing to moving forward with their lives and leaving their pasts behind. Will they move forward... Together?
Annie and Patrick are my favourite! I loved that they're both struggling with events in their past, albeit very different events. This is a gorgeous story where the characters are battling with the concept of being happy, and not letting age impact their decisions. This book makes you question your decisions in life, and check in with yourself and your well-being.
I did feel as though the first half could have been slightly more condensed, and the second half could have been slowed down and more descriptive. Overall, a fantastic book and I would definitely read more Annie and Patrick in the future!
One cancelled wedding.. One unexpected encounter.. One spare ticket for the honeymoon..
This was enjoyable read.
I haven't read anything else by this author and I must say that I like her writing, especially I like the main idea of the book. It was nice to stop and think a little bit what would you do if you were in the shoes of both characters.
Let's say it was original in its own way.
But also i must say that I found the book little bit long, like it was dragged little bit more than it should be.
Also I wished there was a bit more development of the relationships she had with some characters.
I guess my main problem was that there wasn't sparkle.. the magic.. still I kinda like it.
Definitely going to recommend it for summer reading.
Big thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for my advanced copy.
Annie has been jilted by her boyfriend Alexander at the altar after being in a relationship for over a decade. She was devastated, the world collapsed around her but it’s a blessing in disguise. Soon, she bumps into an old friend Patrick, and takes off for her honeymoon with him which has been paid for by Alexander’s parents.
Annie is admirable for turning her life around by evaluating and figuring out from the horrible betrayal. Since childhood, she has molded herself to meet expectations of people around him even though it’s not her real persona. First time, she gets a chance to see herself through her own eyes rather than through other people’ lens.
Patrick is charming, content, with a YOLO attitude. He helps Annie by making her realize to be true to herself, do whatever she wanted and not to be a pushover. The big takeaway for me is the pearls of wisdom incorporated though Annie’s journey of enlightenment without making the reader feel it’s preachy. This sets this book apart from the usual fluffy romances.
Apart from Annie and Patrick, her gang of four friends and colleague Azdo are all awesome and provide a strong support system to her. Her sister Freddie is also sweet, and loved the delightful sisterhood of these. It was good to be transported to beautiful Australia through Williams's vivid descriptions.
Overall, this is a charming, delightful, emotional in parts, and feel-good romantic book.
Special thanks to NetGalley and Avon books UK for providing me an advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Having read the authors previous work I was very excited to be given the chance to read this and it did not disappoint. A great, if slightly predictable story that has heart, makes you laugh (and cry) and a fantastic cast of characters! I would strongly recommend reading this for sheer escapism in this weird world.
This book was everything I needed at the moment. I have to admit I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. Such a light and easy read and I loved the characters. Definitely recommend this one.
The title of this book and the writing inside provided me with exactly what I needed...an escape. This is the first book I’ve read by Laura Jane Williams and she has earned a new fan!
William’ authentic storytelling was charming and heartwarming. Not just a love story, this novel focused on respecting oneself and the journey Annie takes to discover true happiness. The friendships, family dynamic, and romance worked together to provide a witty and thought provoking escape from reality!
Thank you NetGalley, Avon Books, and Laura Jane Williams for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
Every one of Laura's books is the perfect escapism, and The Lucy Escape is no different. I devoured this in two days and it was a much needed break from the January 21 lockdown.
So endearing & packed with swoons! I loved every moment of Lucky Escape. Annie and her problems felt so realistic, the friendship groups were fantastic & I couldn't help but smile my way through every page. Fans of Lia Louis & Beach Read will adore Lucky Escape
As a wedding photographer for almost 15 years I've seen a lot but I've yet to have someone get jilted at the altar (a few close calls though!) so the premise of this book immediately sucked me in. From the first few pages I was immediately hooked in.
While you have to suspend a bit of disbelief for the main part of the story, I really rather enjoyed it and wished there was another whole section of more of the honeymoon fun and adventures. That's by far the best part of this book and shows the best of Annie and Patrick.
However, once the honeymoon is over the book almost completely does an about face and it gets a bit mucked up. While the ending brings it back together again I feel there was a bit of a misstep there in the final third of the book.
Overall it was still an enjoyable read and it was a fun break from the doom and gloom of early 2021!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an eARC copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
This is very much a "sweet" story, the characters and their relationships are adorable and the plot is charming!
I enjoyed this and found that I flew through reading it as I was so invested in Annie and her story.
If you're a fan of the genre, or any of Laura Jane William's previous work, i think you'll really enjoy reading this.
I really didn't want this book to finish, I really loved it.
Maybe it took me away from what is happening in the world and took me into someone's life that needed changing for the better.
I connected so much with Annie, feeling you always had do things in a certain way and was really stuck in a life that pleasing others first is easy, but your not truly happy.
It excited me when she got jilted and realised she was going to turn it around into a good thing.
This is my first book to read from this author book won't be the last. 5 stars deserved.
Thank you for the opportunity
Annie is headed down the aisle when she learns that her soon to be husband has called off the wedding. Her "should be" in-laws encourage her to go on the luxury honeymoon they planned for them and Annie decides to go with her camp friend Patrick. They haven't seen each other in many many years, but decide to live in the moment and take this trip together. Throughout the "honeymoon," they learn about each other and begin to fall in love. A sweet romance that I would definitely recommend!
4.5 stars. A story about love and loss in many different forms. Learning to love yourself as well as learning about the love you deserve.
This was a great read- quick and engaging, but still pulls at the heartstrings. I enjoyed the characters and their stories.
Thank you for the ARC, NetGalley.
I'm starting to really love this author, and this is the sort of story that really appeals to me.
Of course all my favourite bits involved the honeymoon, which given even the destination hasn't been revealed in the blurb, I don't feel right in saying it here.
Let's just say it's a long haul flight, a three week trip of a lifetime and I was open mouthed at the luxurious nature of it, especially given it was paid for by the in-laws that weren't actually in-laws due to their son jilting Annie at the altar.
I loved the descriptions and trips that were taken on this honeymoon, not always the most expected of destinations, and sometimes not solidly on the tourist trail which was really nice to see. As a travel lover I was I really happy with how it was depicted, and made me long to get on a plane to join Annie and Patrick out there.
But there is more to this book than just the travel element, it's a story of how Annie learns a lot about herself in the aftermath of her jilting. There is her brand night light hearted friendship with Patrick who she knew briefly as a teenager, and I loved her relationship with her much younger sister.
Annie's mother was so familiar to me, the various comments she made, it felt like she could have been my mum, for the majority of the book.
I really did enjoy everything about this book, from the first few pages where Annie is all excited getting ready for her wedding, to the aftermath where she is frustrated with her family around her, and her attempts to regain control with a boot camp. And all that before the honeymoon which wasn't a honeymoon as such.
Her dynamic with Patrick was so fun to read, and I would love a Patrick in my life!
Having enjoyed the books I've now read by Laura Jane Williams I really should go back and read Our Stop, and I will definitely keep an eager eye out for future releases.
Thank you to Avon and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
A joy in the grey days of January!! Annie gets jilted at the alter....decides she will go on honeymoon..with an old school friend Patrick that she meets again by chance. Adventures and finding the real Annie and Patrick ensue. They both have issues to address and in doing so find themselves and each other. A lovely but of much needed escapism which I thoroughly enjoyed. Likeable characters, realistic setting and satisfactory ending..
Pure escapism. The start of the book was ok but after a few chapters it really took off, and not just to Australia... the fun that Annie and Patrick share is so uplifting. Just a bit jealous of the Australian honeymoon.
Laura Jane Williams is a great fun writer, she makes me smile and we need that at the moment.
Thank you NetGalley
I want to start by saying I loved this book - yup I said it - I loved it. It was an utter joy to read and the perfect book to escape with. Having visited both Perth and Margaret River in Australia, I found myself right back by the sea sipping wine and eating cheese with my friends and now husband.
Having read Our Stop and The Love Square by Laura Jane Williams I knew I would enjoy this novel - but in my opinion, this was Laura's best work yet. It was so nice to drift away to the summer sun in Australia - especially after the current ways of the world - and I loved going back to places I had visited. I'm still determined to make my way over to Sydney.
It was a quick and easy read with enjoyable characters. I liked that you saw Annie re-discover who she was and what she wanted from life.
I gave it 5 stars as I simply loved the escape. It was lovely and fresh and I really enjoyed it!
Annie has been with her fiancee for 10 years and the book begins on their wedding day, however he has had second thoughts and leaves it to the wedding planner to inform her he's not turning up. Annie, with the help of her friends and sister, goes on a journey to rediscover herself.
A well written book with some really relatable characters. I loved the relationship she had with her sister and her friends.
I received this book from Netgalley and publishers in exchange for an honest review
Annie is jilted on her wedding day, and her world is turned completely upside down. A chance meeting leads to her being reunited with childhood friend Patrick, and in a twist of events, ends up taking him on her honeymoon.
There were some really nice relationships in this book. Annie's friendship with her Core Four as well as Adzo, just felt so real. I adored her and her little sister Freddie, too. My favourite of all though, was Patrick. What an actual dream.
The descriptions of Australia were stunning and I loved reading about all of the places Annie and Patrick visited. Seeing Annie go from being such a people pleaser scared to do what she really wanted, to actually putting herself first was so refreshing.
Overall this was the perfect summer read, with fantastic characters and I found it hard to put down. This was my favourite book of Laura's yet, and I'll definitely be reading more!
A massive thank you to Netgalley and Avon for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this book. Slightly predictable but still a great read. Scenes were set brilliantly. Plot flowed and never got boring
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. Really enjoyed this book, liked the storyline, liked the characters, basically liked everything. Worth a read.
A fairly enjoyable read, with some inconsistencies.
Annie and Alexander were meant to be, or so Annie thought. They had been together for most of their adult lives after all. So she's completely taken by surprise when he doesn't show up for their wedding.
With her entire belief system uprooted, Annie is unsure what to do next. She was supposed to be in Australia for her honeymoon. But now she has been in bed for day(s), and is unsure about what to do next. Should she go back to work, where she has to deal with her colleagues who will definitely have heard all about it? Or maybe she can stay in bed for the upcoming 3 weeks?
Instead, she runs into her old friend Patrick, who convinces her to go on her honeymoon. Why waste a trip to Australia? And maybe he can go with her?
The story (felt like it was) almost divided into 3 parts;
1. Being left at the alter
2. Australia
3. After Australia
The first two parts were great, the flow was completely believable, and Patrick's introduction back into Annie's life is the cherry on top.
I was however, disappointed in the third part of the story as I felt like Annie's character in the third book did not match the strong, working woman she was described as from the beginning.
Sure, it makes sense that her self-esteem would be shattered after being left at the alter, but it seemed that her decision making skills were also affected, and I found it slightly inconsistent towards the end.
Overall, The Lucky Escape was an entertaining romance; a perfect light beach read.
I received this ARC from the publisher in return for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an advanced readers e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
I unabashedly love this book for being so soft and real about Annie and her indecisive mind, her broken relationship with her mother and how she heals and grows over the course of a book. It's also such a superior friends to lovers story. Patrick is a friend you WANT even if he weren't attractive to you and despite a weird start where he goes "I'm a good guy" it goes very well. And then not. Like real life. I love how realistic and grounded it remains- despite it being set on a luxurious (not)honeymoon- holiday.
Truly the stuff of escapist dreams.
I was absolutely thrilled when I got an ARC of The Lucky Escape, because I adore Laura Jane Williams' work. Our Stop and The Love Square are two of my favourite contemporary romance novels so I knew this one would be just as fulfilling.
I can honestly say this is my new favourite out of the three books. It was the perfect escapism, full of funny moments, sweet moments, heartbreaking moments and everything in between. I loved the entire sequence down under, and every conversation between Annie and Patrick. Annie's relationship with him felt so true and I loved how they both bounced of each other in such a genuine way. The pacing of the story overall was perfect, and given the disastrous circumstances at the beginning, I liked that we didn't have to dwell on it for too long before the fun really began, but it wasn't just swept under the carpet either.
I also loved the side characters, especially Annie's sister Freddie. Everyone could do with a sister like her!
One of the reasons I love Laura's stories is that they always feel so realistic and so current. Like I could be reading about her friends, not some fictional characters. This book was no different and I can't wait to purchase a copy for my shelves when it's released in the summer.
A strange book at first. . I could not see where it was going. You knew Patrick and Annie would end up together. A pleasant read. I did love the descriptions of Australia and Annie's love for her sister. Annie's mother was a character and a half, we knew she loved Annie deep down. The ending was good
Told ultimately in three stages - pre-honeymoon, the honeymoon, and post-honeymoon, this story follows the life of Annie, a recently jilted bride. Uncertain how to proceed after being left by long-term partner Alexander, Annie decides to takes a chance on an old friend she becomes reacquainted with. She packs her suitcase and passport, and the pair set off on her honeymoon, reminiscing about their youth together in a theatre group. Ultimately this is a story of the newly single Annie figuring out what she wants from life going forward.
Much like a cute romantic-comedy blockbuster, there are moments of hilarity - most notably a naked spa retreat - but also themes of touching sincerity including the loss of a spouse. This story is a retrospective look at womanhood and what constitutes a healthy relationship - whether romantically or platonically. This story of love and adventure has a much deeper thread than you'd imagine which I was pleasantly surprised by. Kudos too for the representation of non-binary characters at the spa Annie visits too.
Annie's journey to becoming a self-assured woman was fun to follow along with, but at times I felt there were unnecessary lapses including Jules and then her considering doing her current job in Belgium despite wanting a career change which is why I hadn't rated this higher.
This is fluffy and romantic much like Laura Jane Williams' other work, and I am a fan. If you're looking for something that doesn't take itself too seriously, this feel-good frolic is a perfect beach read (or a slice of escapism in the middle of January).
*Huge thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books for this review copy, I literally SQUEALED when I got send the ARC before Christmas!
In the midst of lockdown and the pandemic, this was just what my heart needed. I loved the protagonist, Annie, and felt she was extremely funny and relatable. This book was just a consistently enjoyable and light read. I felt like I was right there on the beach enjoying a cocktail. I would definitely recommend if you're looking for a fun and light-hearted story to put a smile on your face!
A fun quick read. When Annie is left at the altar by her college sweetheart, who called the wedding planner instead of her to let them know the wedding was off, she doesn't know what to do. Luckily, a run-in with Patrick, an old camp friend, paired with a set of would-be inlaws who insist Annie still take her honeymoon to Australia, leads to an adventure for two Down Under. Sparks fly, but can, and should, two brokenhearted people find love? To nitpick, I couldn't believe that Annie's ex's parents would be so good to her -- treating her to the first class all the way trip -- even after the wedding was off. But it was fun to indulge the fantasy. There's a tinge of depth and exploring what it means to be an adult that makes this a bit more than your typical beach book but it is still a page turner and a good escape.
NOTE: Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
Firstly, I love Laura Jane and secondly I love her books! Thank you Avon!
----
this book might seem like any other romance novel, where the protagonists come together in an unlikely situation and end up getting together. However, this book doesn't end there and that's what I love about it. It teaches you so many things about adulting, of how your problems aren't less than anyone else's, how your friends can still be there for you regardless of where they are in their lives, how there is no age to start over,
---
it also talks about second chances and how "what people will say" can come between your own feelings. Never let someone else dictate your life with their thoughts, do what feels right!
---
can't wait to get my hands on the actual book, so that I can mark my favorite lines!

The Lucky Escape is a classic beach read with a romantic lift, but laced with a beautifully inspiring coming-of-age element that makes it my favourite Laura Jane Williams novel yet.
Annie Wiig was abandoned by her ex, Alexander, on her wedding day. Nearing 30, single, and now more insecure than ever, she feels as if she has lost her grip on life. So she decides to make a promise to herself: stop trying to be perfect and just say yes. At a spin class she meets, or rather becomes reacquainted with, Patrick. He's an old friend from her childhood theatre camp, and a refreshing reminder of the simpler times. When Annie gets the opportunity to take her honeymoon sans ex-fiancé, she decides to take the chance. And while she's at it, she takes a chance on Patrick too.
This book is nice and light, the perfect story to relax and enjoy. Laura Jane Williams has a quality to her writing that's friendly, humorous, and effortlessly charming. But in contrast to Our Stop and The Love Square, The Lucky Escape has a deeper, heavier layer added that is explored through the protagonist’s expressions and development.
Annie has plenty of humour and wit, even though she has spent much of her life living to please others. She is easily the most complex character I have met in Williams’ novels. I loved how human and authentic her personality felt, especially when it came to comparing her past with her present and future. She has inner conflicts with herself, she says the wrong thing, she makes realistic mistakes, she has genuine timidities, and she has imperfect reasoning. Her development is the best part of this story. While the plot has some cringe rather than swoon moments, Annie's character is strong and compelling as she leans to love exactly who she is. Additionally, the loyalty in her friendship group and the bond with her sister is wonderfully uplifting.
Patrick really is a breath of fresh air. He's naturally adventurous and confident. And he brings a nice stream of maturity to this novel. I love that he has a completely different approach to life compared to Annie. Their romance is sweet, and their adventure is engaging, but sadly not the most memorable. The pacing was a little slow, especially in the beginning of the book. It takes a while for momentum to build, and I did actually consider giving up around 30% of the way through. But I’m glad I stuck with Annie and her courageous advance to another year of adulthood.
Overall, I liked reading The Lucky Escape. It’s light-hearted mixed with the right amount of depth without straying too far from the romance. It has plenty of laughs, truthful heartbreak, colourful characters, and a gratifying journey to self-acceptance.
A light- hearted, feel good read that I really enjoyed. Yes there was heartache but there were also plenty of laughs along the way!
Amazing book!! You will fall in love with the main character! She is so spunky and sweet. This book was perfect beginning to end.
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: Expected 10th June 2021 (Avon Books)

Everything has changed. Her home, her plan, her future ... they're all so very different and she doesn't even know why. Along with her newly found Confidant and recent broken heart, former theatre school friend Paddy, they set off for a strange adventure of self-discovery and heartbreak.
Full of a cast of colourful, beautifully vibrant and unapologetically real women who I fell in love with right away - this book was full of everything. Hilarity, heartbreak, rage and romance all wrapped into one. Every single character had a whole life of their own and came to life on the pages in front of me.
This was honestly a feminist dream of indulging in a devilishly dramatic romance without having to deal with the age-old cliches and stereotypes of perfect women whose personalities exist solely based on their boyfriends.
Absolutely refreshing and hilarious charming, this was such an easy read that I finished in one sitting.
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you to NetGalley and Laura Jane Williams for this ARC.
Annie gets jilted on her wedding day. Her future in laws gave them a gift of a honeymoon to Australia and urged her to still go. Anni decided that she was changing her life and when she met Patrick whom she'd known years ago she asked him to go with her on o non honeymoon. Great book
The Lucky Escape follows the story of Annie who having been left standing at the altar, realises Alexander might not have been the right man for her. After a chance meeting with an old friend, Patrick at the gym, Annie decides to head off on her would be honeymoon. She has a spare ticket, could embarking on this trip with Patrick help mend her broken heart or will spending three weeks with a man who’s not her husband be a mistake?
I enjoyed this book, found the characters to be both likeable and relatable and thought the book progressed at a steady pace. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.
I received this eBook on @netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was one of the books I was most looking forward to reading in 2021 and it has 100% exceeded my expectations.
I absolutely loved the storyline and the fact that there was just as many downs as ups. It is hilarious and sad all in one, I laughed and cried throughout and then laughed a little more and cried from laughing. My favourite part has to be Willy-gate, I literally died of laughter.
The concept of the story is mortifying and you can only feel so sorry for Annie, and I loved that there was a very ‘Will they/ won’t they” throughout the story. What an amazing non-honeymoon, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous!
Publication Day - 10th June 2021
I really recommend this book!
I loved Our stop so was really pleased to get the ARC of this one- i thought it would be such a lovely light hearted read and it was just that and more! With likeable characters driven by a predictable yet one of kind plot at the same time, The Lucky Escape left my heart warm whilst also covering some deeper topics like loss and lack of self esteem. I really enjoyed this book and lapped it up over a few winter evenings and will definitely purchase it upon release as a feel good read!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a perfect chic lit beach read. The story kept me interested. Who doesn't love a story about starting over and embracing your inner badass self.
Annie was about to be married when her fiance tells the wedding planner it's not happening. Annie is left broken hearted. Her not quite in laws urge her to take the honeymoon trip. Annie decides to go with Patrick, a man she has run in to that she knew from when she was a kid.
I won't give away anymore. Definitely worth the read!
#LuckyEscape #NetGalley
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I always struggle when starting new ones, but this had me hooked immediately. It’s totally predictable, but I enjoyed the escapism. The characters were great and the settings amazing (I had to look them up and the images didn’t disappoint). I’d recommend this book for some well deserved positivity right now.
The Lucky Escape is a sweet rom-com about a woman named, Annie who is jilted at the altar. Heartbroken she decides to go on her Australian honeymoon with a newly re-connected friend from childhood, a single man named Patrick. I loved that the relationship builds from Annie and Patrick's friendship. They had chemistry from the very beginning.
I Laura Jane Williams has done it again. The Lucky Escape is funny, romantic, heartbreaking, and sweet.
ARC generously supplied by the publisher Harper Collins and NetGalley, this review is my honest opinion and completely unbiased.
When Annie arrives at the church ready to marry Alexander she receives the news that he's cancelled the wedding and has disappeared. Confused and heartbroken Annie has no idea what caused Alexander's change of heart.
Deciding not to waste the honeymoon, she suggests that Patrick, an old friend, accompany her instead of her missing ex-fiancé. Leaving for a two week, luxury non-honeymoon in Australia they agree to be merely friends sharing a trip of a lifetime. After all Annie has just been jilted and Patrick insists he doesn't want a permanent relationship.
I didn't mind that the plot was foreseeable, reading about sunny Australia during a winter lockdown was a delight and a means to ignore the cold rain outside.
An enjoyable, easy to read romance, with likeable characters.
TW: challenging parental relationship, self-doubt, controlling behaviour.
I really enjoyed this. Like it's predecessor Our Stop, it is charming and romantic.
Annie is all set to marry her collage sweetheart, when she finds he's left her at the altar and disappeared.
Her would be in laws offer her the all paid Australian honeymoon she would have gone on as a sort of apology, and she goes off with an old friend to get a break.
What follows is Annie questioning her whole life. Ever decision she has made sense she was young. Were any of them for her, or to please others?
Can her old friend Patrick, bring some new wisdom into her life, and possible show her how to whole again.
Set in 3 parts,
The would be Wedding
The Honeymoon
The Reality.
On the surface this is a beach read of a woman Eat, Pray, Loving and rebooting her life. In fact EPL is mentioned, as are many other cultural references.
But underneath that i found Annie's questioning and self-doubt to be very true to life. She has grown up trying to be the version of herself that she thought others wanted. Not being a true partner, just a version of one to not annoy her fiancé. Almost disappearing as not to aggravate people. Living her life to please others and now she is breaking out of that.
Like her other books, Laura Jane Williams writes flawed women, far from perfect and not man can fix them. Sure a love interest helps them along the way, but ultimately it is up to them to fix their problems.
The Lucky Escape was the perfect “escape” from a snowy January day.
Annie is left at the alter by her college sweetheart. Devastated, embarrassed and heartbroken she sinks into the pits of depression. Until one day she discovers a workout class that begins to pour back the life into her. At said workout class, she reconnects with a childhood friend, Patrick. Her would be in-laws insist she take the honeymoon to Australia that they has already paid for. At first she refuses, but before she knows it she’s on a first class plane ride to paradise with Patrick by her side.
The book is a little bit like a Hallmark movie in that you just know that Annie and Patrick will end up together. Patrick is the male lead that every woman drools over. He’s funny, charismatic, chivalrous, and the perfect travel companion.
The Australian setting made me jealous and itching to travel. I know I’ve added Sydney to my travel bucket list after this read.
The novel read a bit differently for me because it was London based leading roles. I liked hearing from a different perspective than the American one.
A joyful easy read that follows the story of Annie who unwillingly escapes a longstanding relationship with her childhood sweetheart Alexander. Annie rediscovers herself and the joy of living life on her terms coupled with an unexpected new relationship, flat and reflections on her chosen career.
Laura Jane Williams portrays the importance of always putting your happiness first, letting go of self-doubt and fears to live your best life.
This was a quick read for me. Thank you to Netgalley for this advanced reader copy- loved it!
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams is a masterpiece of a novel. I haven’t spent an all-nighter reading a book in a while, but I found that I just couldn’t put this one down. From the emotional struggles and self-discovery arc, I was captivated. I even found that the storyline was not as predictable as I find a lot of contemporary romances and was not able to figure out what was going to happen until the very end. There were a few things that made me a bit skeptical, but without getting into any spoiler territory, they seemed to be resolved and explained. Overall, this book is one of the first five star reads I’ve had in a while and helped me get back out of a reading slump.
Thank you to NetGalley for the copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Fun, sad, heartwarming and laugh out loud till you cry , this book was all of these things. A delight to read about love, loss and friendship with some travel as well.
Highly recommended for these troubled times.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
The Lucky Escape
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
“ONE CANCELLED WEDDING
When the day finally comes for Annie to marry Alexander, the last thing she expects is to be left standing at the altar. She was so sure he was Mr Right. Now, she has no idea how she could have got it so wrong.
ONE UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER
After a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend who reminds her of who she used to be, Annie takes a vow of her own: she’ll say yes to every opportunity that comes her way from now on.
ONE SPARE TICKET FOR THE HONEYMOON
Could a spontaneous trip with Patrick be the way to mend Annie’s heart? She’s about to find out as she embarks on her honeymoon – with a man who’s not her husband…”
I was in two minds about reading this, The Love Square was my first read of the year and I loved it so I was worried this might not live up to its predecessor.
I needn’t have worried. I adored it!
I have this pre ordered on @amazonuk and can’t wait to gift it to some friends.
A miserable humiliation becomes the best thing that ever happened to Annie, the thirty-two year old brilliant but woefully lacking in self-confidence heroine in this charming story. The novel traces her gradual coming back to life as she journeys to Australia on the honeymoon paid for by her prospective in-laws that she was meant to be taking with the long-term lover who ditched her almost at the altar.
Having recently become re-acquainted with a happy-go-lucky old friend from her youthful days in summer theatre, she takes him along as her “plus-one” on the once-in-a-lifetime trip. While readers may predict the happy ending, the adventures and epiphanies that come in between make the novel an enjoyable read. The tone is light-hearted and witty, but there are also some very relatable family relationships, particularly Annie’s with her mother, that pack a more serious punch. Readers will cheer as Annie learns self-acceptance, forgiveness, and the joys of living in the present moment in this warm and life-affirming story. If Nora Ephron-style rom coms are your thing, I definitely recommend that you look for The Lucky Escape when it comes out in June 2021.
Every book at the moment is claiming to be escapist, but this read is next level. It transported me straight to the golden sands of Australia and it was heaven.
After being jilted at the alter, Annie finds herself the recipient of an all-expenses-paid, luxury holiday in Australia. There’s no way she’s going; she can barely pull herself out of bed, let alone half way across the world. Until she finds a really intense circuits class at her local gym and it gives her an outlet for her aggression and the unanswered questions that her ex-fiance, Alexander, left her with. It’s there that she meets Patrick, the man she used to know from theatre camp. With him, taking the trip seems possible and they both jet off.
I adored ‘visiting’ all the luxury places in Australia. From the amazing beaches, the road trips, the vineyard. It was like feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin and I had a great time reading this book as a distraction to the storm clouds outside my window. It gave me inspiration for future trips and definitely secured this location as a must visit!
The first half of this book is set in Australia, but there’s also a lot that happens after they return home, which shows the reality after a perfect holiday romance. Usually the flight home would be the end of the book and we’d be left pondering their happy-ever-after, but I actually really enjoyed the second half in London too. Life and relationships aren’t perfect and this often isn’t reflected in women’s fiction, but this showed us exactly how real life can have be both challenging and brilliant.
One thing I love to see is progress: before the honeymoon and meeting Patrick, Annie did what other people wanted her to. She never stood up to her Mum, she was practically grateful for Alexander for wanting to marry her and her job wasn’t fulfilling her. The trip, and Patrick, forces her to re-evaluate everything and she returns to the UK with a renewed sense of purpose about how her life is going to be lived. She makes huge career and life decisions and she is born into a new woman that I was strangely proud of!
Patrick is the best kind of man. Holly Bourne recently wrote it perfectly on Instagram, saying that Patrick is a great love interest because he has already done the work; he is not a bad boy that our leading lady has to work to ‘fix’ before he can fully love her. Not only is he lovely, honest and vulnerable, but he pushes Annie to be the best version of herself. For me, that is absolutely the definition of love, choosing someone who makes you a better you.
This book felt like sunshine and happiness and it was exactly what I needed on a dreary January weekend.
I loved Our Stop so had very high hopes for this and Laura didn't disappoint!!
This was such an adorable book and I could have kept reading for hours (housework ceased for the day in this house!!)
It was the perfect book to escape with and I just loved the scene setting it really transported me!
Cant wait to read more from Laura and her witty sense of humour!
Laura Jane Williams does it again! I adored Out Stop and equally love The Lucky Escape. As Laura says in her acknowledgements, it really is the perfect book for escapism. Commercial but has nuggets of wisdom and life advice tucked in there. It’s the book I’ll be telling people to read in 2021 because we all need some love and lightness like this.
The build-up to actually getting to the vacation took longer than expected, but I understood why the author did wrote it that way. It did help with establishing their relationship and characteristics and made it different than a traditional romance book to me. However, I felt there was a lot of repetitiveness in both of their behaviors which got to be annoying at points.
Having enjoyed the authors books before, I was very intrigued by this book. Jilted on her wedding day, Annie is devastated. She mopes for a little while before deciding to try and get back out there, bumping into old friend Patrick when she does.
Her in laws are ashamed about how their son treated her and tell her to go on the honeymoon regardless - and Patrick ends up going along for the ride! Now these must be very understanding in laws because even though their son was a piece of garbage, I doubt many people would allow another man to go on the holiday that they technically paid for!
It was nice to see Annie rekindle an old friendship and I loved the relationship between Annie and her little sister. Her mum was a little infuriating, overbearing and judgemental but it was nice to see them finally find some common ground.
I think the ending could have been a little stronger but overall this was a fantastic read.
*gifted in exchange for an honest review*
I love Laura Jane Williams books! Annie is a loveable character, and we instantly fell for her after she was left outside the church on her wedding day, by Alexander (who we instantly don't like). Patrick however, is an old friend of Annie's and when they catch up at boot camp, she knows he's not the type of man who would leaver her at the altar.
I loved following Annie's empowerment after losing her university love. She was strong and Patrick was the perfect example of a man to help her. It was a little predictable in the second half but that's ok.
My heart broke for Annie but being able to watch to flourish was lovely. She held back from making herself happy for so long and as she became more confined it was great to see the decisions she made for herself
Annie Wiig never expected to be left at the altar. She also never expected her ex-in-laws to force her to go on a lavish 3 week honeymoon to Australia either, but after 2 weeks of laying in bed and venturing to Barry’s Bootcamp, she realizes an Australian holiday might be what she needs. She also doesn’t expect to be reunited with Patrick Hummingbird from her days at theater camp, or to have him join her on her not-honeymoon. As Annie navigates the unexpected, she also navigates through self-discovery and realizes she made a lucky escape being left at the altar. Annie throws caution to the wind and starts to realize that she must expect the unexpected, and she must start living her life the way she wants. Starting with a possible romance in Australia with Patrick Hummingbird.
Let me preface this by saying I ADORED Our Stop, so I was over the moon to see another romance release from Laura Jane Williams. The Lucky Escape is a tender and sweet story with an overarching female empowerment message, and it was meaningful without taking itself too seriously. Fans of Beth O’Leary, Emily Henry and Christina Lauren will enjoy.
When Annie is dumped at the alter she is broken, she never saw it coming and was devastated. Throwing herself into trying a new bootcamp she meets an old acquaintance, Patrick, soon their friendship evolves into a security blanket she needs. When her ex’s mother suggests she still goes on the honeymoon with a friend she takes Patrick. His refreshing outlook on life is exactly what Annie needs to reevaluate her own life.
I really did love this book. It was funny, romantic and perfect to read during these strange times! Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
The Lucky Escape is just the dose of sweet and romantic escapism in you seek out in contemporary romcom. When Annie is jilted at the altar, her old friend Patrick comes to the rescue and over the course of an already paid for honeymoon, Annie comes to terms with truths about her ex, herself and her friend Patrick, who is obviously more than just a friend.
This story didn’t break any barriers or new ground, but it’s exactly the beach read you’re in search of for an assured HEA and an uncomplicated read.
How gorgeous is the cover of this book? Drew me right in!
As far as stories go, this is one of the more heartfelt romance books I've read and has one of the most independent characters I've read in a while! Annie, after being jilted at the alter is left to pick up the pieces of what went wrong with her almost marriage and ends up going on a honeymoon with a man she used to know. And that man is Patrick Hummingbird (I can't get over his surname, it's the sweetest!).
I loved Patrick, he's all you could want in a book boyfriend, seriously. Sweet, handsome, caring. Checks all the boxes.
This book wasn't all cupcakes and rainbows though, and I think that's what sets it apart. It deals with subjects such as love, loss and moving forward. The importance of finding oneself. The importance of not letting a relationship define you and of not letting a relationship take over you. We all know that someone who isn't treated fairly in a relationship, letting their own self worth slip away. This book really showed how one deals with discovering how they were treated in a relationship that didn't seem toxic while in it, but was found to be toxic when looking at it from a different perspective.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the earc in return for an honest review.
Review based on an ARC provided by the publishers.
Another wonderful story from Laura Jane Williams.
After being jilted at the altar, Annie grieves the loss of her long term relationship to Alexander. She tries to get back on her feet, which leads to her meeting an old friend from her teenage years, Patrick. One wine-fueled evening out and Annie and Patrick travel to Australia together for Annie's three week holiday.
Of course sparks fly. However, just because Annie promised herself to say "yes" to opportunities coming her way from now on, doesn't mean this holiday fling would work out back in London. Especially not when Annie is faced with even more "yes-worthy" opportunities.
As mentioned above, I read an ARC of this book. I thought the last 20% were a bit rushed, but this might be smoothed out before the book hits the market. I'm looking forward to close my talons around a final copy of this book and adding it to my hoard - I mean shelves.
This book was soooo good! OMG, I was laughing so hard in some parts I snorted, that’s how good this hook was!
I received an ARC copy of The Lucky Escape and I am oh so glad I did! I have not read any of Laura Jane Williams’ other books and I loved coming into this with a completely open mind. This is heartwarming story of bouncing back and finding love after feeling like you’ve lost it all. I loved everything about Annie’s character and in some ways I could directly relate. I couldn’t quite get on board with Patrick (I found him annoying), but their relationship evolved effortlessly, and I think he was exactly what Annie needed. Overall, it was a light hearted and enjoyable romantic comedy that will be at the top of summer beach read lists!
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.
What do you do after you are left standing at the alter? That is the question Annie finds herself trying to answer. After a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend, Annie realizes that maybe she is not leading the life she really wants to. She decides that she is going to start saying Yes to chances that come along. One of those chances is going on what would have been her honeymoon in Australia with Patrick. This is her chance to find herself and possibly Mr. Right.

I received an advance copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. This is the first book I've read y Laura Jane Williams and I promise to read more as this was such a fun read! I personally loved this book. It was a great "beach" read in the middle of a snowstorm for me so It was a great escape to Australia. I loved the storyline and how hard Annie worked to find happiness after being left at the alter. I highly recommend this book!
When Annie is left standing at the altar on her wedding day she thinks that she has lost everything that matters. A chance encounter with an old friend and a honeymoon to take are impulsively seeming like a good idea. The holiday most people could only dream about in Australia turns into something more magical as friends become more. Can this become real when they get back home to England, or was it really just a holiday romance?
I was so glad to get approved for Laura's third book as I really enjoyed the previous pair; and I must admit to not being disappointed with The Lucky Escape.
Jilted outside the church, with her groom letting the wedding planner break the news, Annie is understandably devestated and struggling to piece her life together without Alexander, her college sweetheart and The One. When she finally tracks him down, Annie realises that things may not have been as perfect as she'd first thought and she starts moving on with her life. When she meets Patrick, a man from her past life as a theatre kid, Annie throws caution to the wind and drunkenly invites him on the honeymoon her not quite mother in law has insisted she still goes on.
Armed with the persona she thinks people want to see, Annie starts to come out of her shell, the more time that she spends with Patrick, the more she realises that she has been hiding her true self away.
This book was funny, heartwarming and at times a tad cringe but it was afantastic read. The second hand embarrassment was real several times haha. Definitely recommend this one, it is the perfect holiday read!
Oh my goodness - what a lovely book. It takes you from the emotional lows of being left at the altar to the beautiful skies of a honeymoon without a husband. The book is well told, with a witty input of humour as the trip around Australia puts the couple into new and awkward situations. The happy ever after in romantic terms is never guaranteed and it almost doesn't matter! The journey that Annie goes on, ably assisted by mad friends and an adorable little sister is worth it whatever happens to Annie and Patrick!
Another wonderfully charming romance from Laura Jane Williams. I absolutely adored this and ended up reading it in two sittings!
The Lucky Escape was an unexpected favorite. While I generally have a hard time connecting with characters living across the pond, I felt an immediate pull from Annie and Patrick. Who hasn’t been dumped or felt they needed a drastic change in their lives? While most of us haven’t dealt with a tragic end to a relationship, I connected with Patrick’s calm demeanour and quiet optimism. His apprehension diving into a new romance was relatable. I thoroughly enjoyed the easy banter, Australian honeymoon and blossoming romance. I found the story uplifting and heartwarming. A good 4 star read.
Vacation in Australia with a hot new man friend? Sign me up! I only wish I had been summering in Australia while reading!
The Lucky Escape captured my attention from the start, and I flew through it. I personally enjoy romance novels with some depth past just the romance and The Lucky Escape delivered. The characters have different traumatic experiences in each of their pasts, but each learned to grow as a human and move forward with their lives and each other.
The only reason this was a 4 star for me was that I found Patrick to be whiny and annoying towards the end. He was doing SO well, but his attitude toward Annie and the things in her life about 75% of the way through was frustrating. But that definitely could just be me and my strong-willed, not-to-be controlled attitude.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to all my romance lovers!
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
I just loved this book. So what ...it was predictable?! That did not take away from the story but rather allowed me to sit back and enjoy the goings on. Thoroughly recommended
This was such a cute quick easy book! I will say it was bit predictable but that never took anything away from the book.
I love the story of this book! The characters were also a favorite of mine! The way they grew.
Overall this book is a must read!
I’ve read both of Laura Jane Williams’ other books and enjoyed them but this was my favourite of the the three. It made me feel like I’d had a holiday! I warmed to the main characters and really enjoyed their travels in Australia. Sure it was quite predictable but that’s what I wanted when I picked this up, a nice easy feel good read!
On the day that Annie is meant to marry her university sweetheart, Alexander, she is left at the alter and left wondering if her relationship wasn't as perfect as it seemed. She can't seem to see a way out of the pain and is questioning her life choices. Whilst trying to cope with what happened, she meets an old theatre friend, Patrick, at a bootcamp session and suddenly she is trying to be as carefree as he is. She vows to take life by the horns and do what actually makes her happy.
Annie decides to go on the honeymoon to Australia after persistence from Alexander's parents and after a drunken decision she takes Patrick along for the ride. Along the way, she discovers that there is more to Patrick than meets the eye and he is struggling with his own pain. Will they help each other to move on or will the holiday make things more complicated for when they get back home?!
I really felt for Annie and I cannot imagine how humiliating it must be to have been left at the alter. I thought Alexander was spineless and definitely not the star in the relationship. She was quite an indecisive character but I think she is so lost and unsure of herself that she doesn't want to make the wrong decision. It's hard knowing what is the right decision and making changes when you are settled in your life can be tricky. I also really wanted to steal Annie's dog Carol, I absolutely adore King Charles Spaniels and it made me want one even more. Patrick was an incredibly patient guy and very mature for a male character. He was supportive, cheesy and cracked me up at times.
I loved Freddie who is Annie's little sister and am secretly hoping that Laura Jane Williams will write a book about her, she sounds like she is going to be a force of nature and definitely a handful as an adult. I definitely feel there is a story there and it would be nice to see Annie again down the line. Annie's mum was a piece of work and I was jumping with joy when she finally stood up to her!
I really enjoyed reading The Lucky Escape, it was an easy-read and I got swept up in the story. It was all very Sex and The City like and the perfect escape from reality. It was an entertaining romance story and it will be a lovely beach read in the summer.
A good light read which would be ideal when on holiday. Annie is jilted on her wedding day and reacts like you would expect, however I was surprised at the amount of time between the wedding day and the planned honeymoon. Were the newlyweds going back to work between the two? I can only imagine they were as Annie was given extra leave on top of the planned time off for going away. The idea of her (should have been) future in-laws telling her she should still go and paying for the first class airline ticket name change for another man to go with her did seem rather unbelievable but then if the were rich enough to do so, why not.
The honeymoon was good and enjoyable to read about with the characters easy to empathise with.
So cute! I laughed out loud during several parts and had a goofy smile on my face during a lot of this book! It is the perfect pick me up book! Light fun easy read highly recommend!
I always love a good Williams book and this one certainly did not disappoint. I am a sap for vacation romances which is what led me here to begin with, but I am definitely glad I stayed.
Annie ends up being dumped at her own wedding and left not knowing what to do with her life. When she bumps into an old friend, Patrick, she decides to be a bit more spontaneous. Annie’s would be in laws are adamant that she should go on the honeymoon anyway and has no problems with her taking Patrick with her.
This book had such a fun idea behind it. I imagine that if I had been in Annie’s situation then I would like to think that I’d take up the honeymoon as well, rather than it go to waste. It was nice that there was a bit of a lead up to this part of the story though instead of it just being rushed into.
I loved the Australian setting but I wanted more. Some parts, Sydney in particular, seemed really rushed. Certain parts of the story could have been fleshed out a little more, just so it didn’t seem like some parts were skipped.
I also thought that there was a bit too much emphasis on the diversity of characters. Everything seemed a bit overkill for me. Some things could have been added in a more subtle way without it seeming like something was being forced.
However, although I had a few niggles, I did really enjoy this book. It was a fun read,
I loved this book! It was heartwarming and strong. It was exactly what I needed with everything going on in the world! A happy little escape!
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Annie was excited about marrying Alexander, but was shocked when he left her at the alter. Annie decides to say to every opportunity she is offered. I enjoyed the chemistry between Annie and her friend Patrick.
The Path Of True Love Never Did Run Smooth❣️
Annie is jilted on her wedding day, her now ex contacts the wedding planner to give his excuses. After trying to come to terms with what's happened, memories of how she and Alexander met, their past, Annie needs to decide what's next... After bumping into a face from her past, Patrick whom she knew from her childhood, a night of free flowing conversation and alcohol, Annie agreed to take Patrick on her non honeymoon. With a start of the new day and a clear head, Annie's not so sure this is a good idea. After much deliberation, Annie decided to go with it, and the story unfolds from here...
The Lucky Escape is full of highs and lows for Annie, events over time eventually making her take a look at her life and stand up for herself, where the old Annie would've let it go. A great read with humour, romance and heartbreak, a book you can lose yourself in. For me this is my favourite book from Laura Jane Williams so far, would be good to read a sequel to this to see where the main characters go. Look forward to reading more from this author.
What a fun read! I started reading The Lucky Escape in the days surrounding my decision to postpone my own upcoming wedding due to the ongoing pandemic - and what a welcome relief it has been from that stress! The Lucky Escape has excellent character building, and transported me from the same four walls I’ve seen nothing other than for the last 11 months in the snowy UK to the heat of Australia. I felt I was on my own luxury holiday with Annie, experiencing the wider world again - such a treat. A little slow to pick up, it took me a while to get into, but once Annie got on the plane, everything fell into place and began to race along (something I recall feeling when reading Our Stop a few years ago too). The Lucky Escape is perfect reading for a pandemic year, and one I’m certain people are going to find a lot of comfort in. Would definitely recommend.
This was a fun read. I really liked the situation that Annie is put in right at the start, it leads to a great character arc through the course of the novel. I also enjoyed her moments with Patrick and found myself smiling through reading them.
Funny and sarcastic, full of love and friendship, the Split is the book you’ll need on a grey day, believe me. The story is about Ally, she goes to stay with her dad in Sheffield after her girlfriend Emily broke up with her, so she decides that she will take Emily’s cat… Because this is the only way Ally thinks that her ex will talk to her again. But, in Sheffield Ally will reconnect with Jeremy, an old friend who will convince her to make a marathon together to make their exes a little bit jealous. Their friendship will help them to recover from their breakups and see things in a new perspective; and maybe find some new love?
This is a sweet and emotive story, easy to fall in love with the characters and understand Ally’s bitterness. Because in a relationship there are a lot of things that can go wrong, is not something linear and both parts of the couple have their guilt for the break up.
I had some good laughs during this read and I loved that the story is full of LGBT characters, it’s time that we can find good books with all type of characters! Ready for “The Split”?
A wonderful romcom telling the story is a jilted bride that decides that instead of moping, she is going to change her life around. Highly recommended!
I haven't read much till I started this book and it's given me the push to read again it's brill and the characters really are set out in this.
Cant wait to read more.
The Lucky Escape had The Unhoneymooners vibes but set on the opposite side of the world.
When we first meet Annie, she's in absolute shock after being left at the altar. Not too long after reconnecting with an old camp friend, Patrick, she's given the opportunity to take her three week honeymoon anyway. Of course, she takes Patrick as her plus one. And the rest is history.
What I liked most about The Lucky Escape was Annie's character development. Over the course of the story, she learns to love herself for who she is and she learns to stand up for herself and what she wants. She learns to advocate for her wants and needs, instead of constantly submitting to everyone around her.
While I liked the relationship between Annie and Patrick, Annie's inner dialogue when they first got together was a bit juvenile. It just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the book.
Overall, though, this was an enjoyable read and my favorite so far by Laura Jane Williams.
THE LUCKY ESCAPE - LAURA JANE WILLIAMS 3.5/5 ⭐️
When the day comes for her to marry her longtime sweetheart, Alexander, Annie gets unexpectedly heartbroken when she is left at the altar with little more than an email sent to the wedding planner by way of explanation.
After reuniting with a friend from long ago, Patrick reminds her of how she used to be: more carefree, less calculated. She makes a vow to herself that she will say yes to every opportunity that comes her way, including her honeymoon. Patrick convinces her to allow him the extra ticket to Australia, where they slowly but surely seek solace in the heartbreak that they have endured.
Could this “yes” be the change Annie has been looking for her whole life, or is she setting herself up to suffer through another broken heart?
It took a while for my attention to be grabbed when I started this book. The first third of the book is mostly Annie discussing her heartbreak with her close friends and sister, the second part is the honeymoon, and the last part is when they return. The first part of the book was pretty boring and repetitive, but when I got to the honeymoon is when things started getting interesting. When they got home from Australia, the book fell really flat unfortunately. The sweet and bubbly relationship that formed between the couple suddenly becomes flighty. I was happy with the ending, besides feeling that it was abrupt and we didn’t really get to see anything bloom.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Avon books, and Laura Jane Williams for an ARC!
I loved loved loved this book! The setting of Australia, Annie finding her. True self, and Patrick learning how to respect his past while moving on in the future just made the story brilliant! I laughed out loud, I felt sad, and most of all I smiled with glee. This will become one of my most recommended rom coms!
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams was just what I needed after two months of snow, a lockdown winter, and a struggle to focus on reading. The story is everything I've come to expect from Laura's take on modern romance, with a bit of a twist: Annie is stood up at the altar by her parter of 10 years, but in the aftermath decides to go on the five star honeymoon to Australia anyway – with an old friend she’s recently reconnected with. There are family, friendship, and career storylines interwoven around the central romance too, and overall this really was the fun, lighthearted virtual "escape" to the sun I needed!
This was a fast, fun read. I loved how both the characters grew separately and together. I would hope for it to resonate with some readers who find themselves in Annie's spot to see things can be changed anytime. Also Patrick sounds dreamy!!
Thanks to #netgalley and #avonbooksUK for this #arc of The Lucky Escape. After her wedding gets cancelled Annie has a chance meeting with Patrick, a friend from her past. They decide to go on her pre-planned honeymoon together. What follows is a lovely book about second chances, true love, and finding our true paths.
I enjoyed this book, but honestly felt like Williams took a bit too long to get to the actual honeymoon part, and then it was over a little too soon. Parts of the book felt a bit out of place, Annie's job was important in the plot, but needed to be fleshed out a bit more. All in all, I enjoyed this book and would read more of Williams's books.
I loved this book! If you are a fan of Laura Jane Williams you will love this book or if you're into RomComs.
I loved the slowish burn of Annie and Patrick and how the book kept me guessing until the end about whether of not they'd end up together. Usually with a romcom you can tell from the very begging however not this one!
I also really enjoyed Annies journey of self discovery throughout. By the end she is putting herself first and it is truly the love story of this book!
I usually get gripped by Laura Jane Williams' writing in the first few pages, on this occasion it took me a few chapters. I'm SO glad I never gave up on it though.
From chapter 20 onwards, I was gripped. Seeing romance blossom between two friends was exactly how things happen in real life and I think LJW put it perfectly. With the Honeymoon being set in Australia, that made me even more interested as I love it there and knew most of the places which were visited - good job!
Just one final thing to add, I love Patrick!
Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for this ARC - Loved it!
Annie and Alexander have been together for 10 years, and on the day of their wedding Alexander doesn’t show up. Weeks later Annie is trying to move on when she bumps into an old friend from her childhood. After meeting up with Patrick and his ‘grab life by the balls’ attitude, Annie decides to go on her honeymoon taking Patrick with her.
This is a journey of self discovery and moving on from the life you always expected to have.
This was a lighthearted read perfect for the beach or, in my case, after reading a heavy book to help lighten the mood. Although I didn't get too attached to the characters, I did like Patrick and how he and Annie's relationship grew. This book had a very Sex and the City vibe to it, so if you like that you'll probably enjoy this as well.
***Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me an advanced copy of this book!
I loved this book. It starts sad for Annie as she is jilted at the isle after being with who she thought was the love of her life after 10 years together. But not to be, after a few weeks of hiding from the world. Annie decides to start running again, one morning she sees a book camp session and decides to join. She begins to enjoy the hard work and the stress relief. After one session, a man shouts her name. Not wanting to engage she hastily leaves. But at the next session he says hi again and after a little chat she realises he is a happy reminder of her past. Patrick has an aura about him that makes Annie feel safe, understood and generally liked. On a drunken afternoon she asks Patrick to accompany her on her “not”, honeymoon. Over the weeks away they become closer and realise they have feelings for each other. But is it too soon??
I thought this was such a cute romance book! Without spoiling too much, it is a cute destination romance with some fun uses of the setting. I thought the characters and dialogue were great, and the writing style was easy to digest and read. What a great book!
Firstly, Laura Jane Williams is one of my favourite authors. I have read other books from her and loved them, she has me hooked all the time and this was no different.
Annie is one of the unluckiest brides, being jilted at the alter is one of the worst things I can think of when emotions are already high on what is meant to be the happiest day of Annie's life. The book takes you through the stages of what I can only imagine being Annie accepting she's been left at the alter and how she moves on with her life, accepting what's happened - she's one strong woman!
Thank you so much Laura and Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC. It was one of the most exciting emails I've had all year!
Annie has one of the most humiliating things happen: she’s jilted on her wedding day. Bolstered by her close friends, she embarks on the honeymoon with someone from her past and a new romance is kindled. I liked Annie. I thought there was a lot of growth for her during the story. . There are several really good showdown scenes that aren’t to be missed. I cheered her on as she found her backbone. I winced at some parts when I didn’t think she was being fair to Patrick. The person who almost stole the entire book was Freddie. Although only 13, she had more sense than the adults. The cover is great.
Ooo y'all I loved this book! Seriously kept my attention the whole way through. Loved the main character, she was very relatable. Great writing as well. Cannot wait for the next read from Laura Jane Williams!
When Annie is left at the alter on her wedding day she is broken hearted. In the end she decides to go on her honeymoon and take Patrick, an old friend she is reacquainted with at the gym. The story is reasonably predictable but not in a bad read. This would be a perfect holiday read.
I found The Lucky Escape to be a very cute, light hearted read. If we’re being honest, I think we are all ready for an escape right now, so this book was perfect. If you're looking for a read that is packed with adventure, seeking self-love, a free honeymoon to Australia, and a handsome man that brings out the best side in you, then I recommend this one for you! Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
Hilariously entertaining and super enjoyable. This book is the very best brain candy meant to be devoured in one sitting.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams was a bit of a slow start for me. I couldn't really get into it and the story line of the jilted bride left at the alter felt flat and cliche. But when Annie goes on the honeymoon without her husband and learns how to truly be herself - the plot quickly became much more interesting (and romantic!). The rest of the book flew by and I couldn't wait to see what happened to Annie at the end. If you like romantic stories with a HEA, this is a cute story. I would definitely try other books by this author!
Laura Jane Williams never disappoints. Romantic and charming but still real, the best book to disappear into during the pandemic.. a lucky escape.
This was a delightful “beach read”. It was the perfect mix of fun and flirty mixed with heartbreak and self discovery.
This was the first book I’ve read by this author. I’ll definitely read more in the future.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for allowing me to read this e-book.
Review of The Lucky escape
Really enjoyed this book. Great characters and character development along with a good story arc. Recommended
The Lucky Escape would be the perfect beach read! Annie finds herself left at the altar by her fiancé Alexander. When the opportunity arises to go on their honeymoon anyway, she finds the she really does want to go. It would be a nice escape from the reality of her situation at home. When she unexpectedly runs into an old childhood friend, she decides to give him the spare ticket and together they embark on the "not a honeymoon-honeymoon."
Annie has lived her entire life pleasing others, making sure not to rock the boat, and sacrificing her own wants in order to keep the peace around her. She's finally realizing that she hasn't been developing authentic relationships because she hasn't been presenting her true self. Most of her life has been an act of pleasing others and trying to fit into a particular mold instead of going after what would truly make her happy.
Laura Jane Williams does an excellent job of developing Annie's character. I could feel Annie struggling to find her bearings but she never seemed whiny or wishy-washy to me. It was a genuine growth and process of maturing that took place. The Lucky Escape covered some deeper issues, but still kept the tone light and would make for an enjoyable summer read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a sweet book.. I loved that it was just as much about friendship and family, as it was about romance. I found Annie, the main character, and her friends and family very likable and Patrick, the new boyfriend, seems like the perfect guy. It made me wish I could go on a honeymoon to Australia just like them!
A predictable yet enjoyable destination romance story that starts with a bride being jilted, re-uniting with an old friend, and a nice love story developing throughout.
I have read all of Laura’s books and can confirm this is my favourite. A blast of summer romance which we all need after a rough 12 months
As always she is very conscious of inclusivity and all of her books have an air of modern life - touching on relevant topics for the times.
I loved Annie, and watching her journey of self discovery after being jilted on her wedding day. She is a likeable character and her internal understandings of her own sense of worth and how they have been tied to her romantic relationships is something a lot of people will be able to relate to. I also loved the dynamics of her friendship group - different friends for different roles but united in one thing - their strong love for Annie. Where can I find myself a Patrick... !
Thank you for the advanced copy. I throughly enjoyed this!
I received this as an arc from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!
I really enjoyed this books. I found the author's writing easy to follow and had a good flow. The beginning of the book was a little slow, just waiting for some more action to happen. However, it wasn't boring for me.
Annie gets left at the alter when her long time boyfriend Alexander decides to call it off via a text to the wedding planner. Annie is devastated and lost. Her almost-were in-laws convice her to go on the nonrefundable honeymoon anyways. Annie meets an old friend from childhood camp, Patrick and he convinces her to go on the honeymoon- and bring him with! Australia here they come! They find themselves and each other on the beaches of Australia. But can they keep it going back in London?
I loved reading Annie and Patrick's time in Australia and wanted more of that and less of the beginning half of the story after Annie was left at the alter. It was fun to grow along with Annie as she rediscovered herself and realized the break-up wasn't the end of the world.
It was hard seeing Annie and Patrick become so distanced when they got back to the reality of life in London. They went from being amazing at communication and discussion to completely not communicating to one another at all. They just dropped the ball and that was incredibly frustrating. It took a 13 year old to kick Annie in gear and realize that she loved Patrick and she was okay with moving on so quickly.
One of the hardest parts of this book for me was Annie and her mom's relationship, and that her dad really didn't do anything to try and help. Annie's mom was so hard on her and unreasonably so. The dad would just clam up and not try and defend Annie or say anything to the mom about her behavior. I thought the way the mom came around in the end was too quick and unrealistic. There were years and years worth of hurtful words and feelings from her to just suddenly turn around the way that she did.
All in all, I would have loved more Annie and Patrick on vacation and less sad, ditched Annie in the beginning. Overall I give this a 4/5.
This was such a fun lighthearted story that i managed to read in one day. I wasn’t sure about Patrick to begin with as i thought Annie wasn’t in the right head space to go away with him but he soon grew on me.!
Highly recommend!
A huge thank-you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this e-arc of The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams.
"If you could just put yourself at the centre of your own world for one second you'd see how much you deserve to be there."
Over the years, I've developed a love-hate relationship with contemporary romance. On the one hand, it's nice to have something light and fluffy to read when you need a mood-booster. On the other hand, I tend to feel frustrated that most of these books lack substance or originality. I've begun to pick up the genre with the assumption that I'll be somewhat disappointed or left wanting more.
So naturally, you can understand my excitement over the fact that The Lucky Escape had the perfect blend of everything a good rom-com should possess. Some chapters caused me to bubble over with deep belly-laughs. Others incited inspiration (note: I was very thankful that I read a digital copy of this novel because I do not like marking my physical books and this way, I was able to highlight to my heart's content). A few times, I even shed tears. I found myself quickly becoming wrapped up in Annie's story and loving every second of it!
There was less predictability in this plot than I originally expected, which I loved. I kept having moments where I would begin to cringe, thinking I knew what would come next, only to be pleasantly surprised!
I appreciated that The Lucky Escape focused a lot on the importance of friendships and sibling relationships. There was as much - if not more - emphasis on this as there was on the romance element. The sweet nicknames Annie and Freddie had for each other warmed my heart and I loved the serious support system that the Core Four provided.
If you find me sitting in a corner, writing sonnets for Patrick, don't be surprised. This cinnamon roll of a man has to be one of my favorite love interests of all time. Truthfully, I could spend forever telling you about how phenomenal he is - and he's not even an unrealistic "dream guy" sort of character. He has depth and soul and a seriously inspirational perspective on life.
This book is currently living rent-free in my mind. Every time I put it down to do my work or run errands, etc., I immediately missed it and wanted to pick it back up again to continue reading. It took virtually no time at all to make it on my list of favorite contemporary romance novels! I will certainly be reading it again and again.
I loved this book! The characters were nice, the story was fun and light without being too fluffy, and some of the scenes actually made me laugh out loud!
When I read what this one was about, I knew it would be up my alley. I have really been loving romances lately and I did enjoy this one!
I loved the first two thirds of this book. The last third did lose me a bit.
I will start with the things I loved. Annie’s initial shock after the wedding getting called off was super real. I felt her emotions and sadness while reading it. I thought her meeting Patrick felt natural and it was nice to read about.
I loved the entire portion of them being in Australia. I couldn’t put the book down at this point. I loved Annie and Patrick’s banter. I also really enjoyed the side characters of this book. They added just enough to the book but it didn’t over do it.
Where I started to lose interest was when they left Australia. I felt like Annie and Patrick both changed and were acting very different from how they were in the first chunk of the book. I also felt like it was just dragging on. I felt myself skimming the highly descriptive paragraphs that I didn’t think were super necessary.
Overall, I would still recommend this if you are looking for a nice light read with a bit of an escape. Thank you to Netgalley and Avon books UK for the ARC in exchange for a review.
3.5 Stars Rounded up to 4
Now that I’ve read two books by Laura can I officially call her one of my favorite authors? Her writing style is like being carried along a river. Effortless. Beautiful. I so enjoyed the characters and desperately wish I was at a beach now.
Sometimes you pick up a book and know from the first few lines that you are going to love it and that’s what I felt with this one. I was actually quite sad when it ended as I had really invested in Annie and Patrick. When Annie gets dumped at the alter a chance meeting of an old friend from summer camp spirals into her going on what should have been her dream honeymoon with him. Even though things are not as she had planned them Annie and Patrick find that maybe everyone needs some space and time to realise life is for the taking and in each other find themselves again. Loved it!!
This book is such a feel good story! Although I knew right at the beginning what was going to happen at the end, I still really enjoyed the story; if not that is why I enjoyed it so much. I felt like I was Annie’s friend and was going on the emotional journey with her; she was such a greatly written character. Laura Jane Williams is such an amazing author, she writes so well and I have loved every single one of her books that I have read; can’t wait for the next.
𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗼𝗻.
𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻.
𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺... 𝗵𝗲’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱..
Annie and Alexander were uni sweethearts, after being together for 10 years it’s finally time to make it official and tie the knot! But Alexander gets cold feet. After being jilted at the alter and festering in misery, Annie decides to still take the honeymoon.
I loved Annie’s journey of self discovery, opening up to new experiences and vowing to do what she wants to do rather than what other people expect of her. The bond with her sister is adorable, her friends are the best and I want to cuddle Patrick.
I loved the diversity of characters and I loved Willy gate.
This book was a cute, witty, modern romance which I found pretty predictable but still really enjoyable.
I really liked this book. It grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept it until the end. It tugs at all the emotions. It went a bit deeper than the typical rom com. While it was an easy, light read this story really makes you feel. I enjoyed watching how Annie and Patrick’s characters developed throughout the book. They had to work through a lot and rediscover themselves on many levels. I would definitely like to read an update on them in the future.
Thank you Avon Books UK for the ARC.
Annie is a fairytale bride - and her life is the picture of perfection. College sweethearts about to be wed, it's the perfect life.
Except it's not.
Especially when she arrives at the wedding venue with her 13yr old little sister and father only to have the wedding planner tell her that today....was not going to go as planned...and he had texted the wedding planner that he wasn't coming. But the honeymoon in Australia has already been booked and paid for, so when her 'no longer about to be in-laws' insist Annie still take the trip, she does.
But just like the wedding, it's not the honeymoon she imagined.
The Lucky Escape is Annie's journey back to herself - finding out who she is when she stops living her life based on the expectations of others. It's witty, fun, romantic, engaging, and real. A chick-lit read that goes beyond the fluff that you expect from the genre, it a heat-warming and uplifting way.
This was such a lovely book to read. I enjoyed that it was just as much about friendship and family, as it was about romance. The romance between Annie and Patrick was exciting and the side characters in the book added really well to the story (Freddie and Adzo were my favourites). Would recommend this as the perfect beach book.
I adored The Lucky Escape: it was the perfect escapist read during a miserable third lockdown and gave me exactly the excitement and travel I was craving. Australia was amazing, and the characters were three-dimensional and believable.
I really enjoyed the relationship between main character Annie and her little sister, and also her best friends. The budding love between her and Patrick during their trip was just lovely, and I was rooting for them to get together. What a dude Patrick is! Annie’s character arc was very satisfying - I loved the way she developed through the course of this story.
Our Stop - by the same author - was one of my favourite reads of 2019, and I must admit that I didn’t take to her follow up The Love Square in the same way, but The Lucky Escape is definitely a 5 star read and I think it might have just become my favourite Laura Jane Williams book. It was such a JOY to read.
With thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
The Lucky Escape, by Laura Jane Williams, is escapist fiction at its finest. When Annie is left at the alter, she decides to go on her honeymoon anyway -- bringing along a childhood friend she hasn't seen in years. What follows is a lovely exploration of love and loss, set against the gorgeous backdrop of a fantastic vacation in Australia.
The best part of The Lucky Escape is surely the descriptions of the luxurious vacation the main characters experience. After a year stuck at home, it was an absolute pleasure to read all about expensive air travel, gorgeous hotels, and fancy resorts. A close second, however, is the relationship between Annie and childhood friend Patrick, who are funny and charming, and very real.
The book dives into some heavy topics, and handles them deftly. Annie's family feel fleshed out and important, and her friends are a truly charming group of people, all of whom it is easy to believe are having all sorts of adventures just off page. Overall, The Lucky Escape is, in fact, a wonderful escape -- and a great read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for the ARC!
CW: spousal death
Clever, an easy way to pass the day. I’d recommend to anyone who wants an authentic, entertaining book to read for any occasion. A bit of unexpected romance isn’t a bad thing.
I was kindly gifted an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am so pleased to have been able to read it early! After enjoying Laura’s previous books and seeing a Q&A with her via Beth’s Book Club I was excited to read The Lucky Escape.
Like the author’s other books, this was an easy, light hearted read. I genuinely laughed out loud whilst reading at times and loved the setting of Australia.
I liked most of the characters including the side characters (mainly Annie’s little sister) and appreciated the inclusiveness of people from different cultures, races, sexualities without it being forced or a ‘thing’ - just an accurate reflection on the variety of people we meet in every day life.
It took a little while to warm to Annie but I loved Patrick from the offset - I predicted pretty much straight away something genuinely heartbreaking was going to be revealed to have happened to him but I think it added depth to his character and didn’t feel like a forced part of the story.
I have read some criticism of Annie’s character and her ‘I am strong and don’t need a man’ attitude being contradicted but I personally just saw that as being very real...taking a personal journey of change isn’t smooth sailing and being human means sometimes contradicting yourself so again, I think it just added some realness to the story.
Overall I gave the book 4 stars - looking forward to any future books from Laura Jane Williams!
The Lucky Escape was a great fun light hearted read that had me laughing out loud many times.
When I was reading about the scene in the spa I had tears streaming down my face laughing.
I loved how Annie grew as a person throughout the book, and it felt like a real journey with her.
This is a book I would definitely recommend to others who enjoy this genre.
Loved reading this book!
'The Lucky Escape' is about Annie; when Annie's fiancée stands her up at the altar, the supposed to be groom's parents offer to pay for a honeymoon for her and a friend. When Annie and Patrick encounter each other at the workout boot camp, they reconnect. Patrick knows the old-version of Annie, the version that she would like to return to. When one drunken night Annie proposes to Patrick that he comes along with to the honeymoon, he agrees and the rest is history.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it brought summer vibes back to me! The characters, I fell in love with, Annie was so strong, the fact that she took control of her life back and learned to live in the moment with Patrick during her honeymoon. And Patrick, he was described so vividly that I could literally picture him, I loved that he allowed himself to be weak around Annie, even though they were practically strangers. I could give you 100 more reasons on why you should read this book but long story short you NEED to read this book!
I would like to thank NetGalley and Avon Books UK for sharing a digital reviewers copy with me in exchange for an honest review.

The Lucky Escapes centres Annie Wiig who is abandoned on her wedding day by her fiancé, Alexander. After 10 years together, Annie is in complete denial about what went wrong. Now single, almost 30 and completely vulnerable, Annie feels she needs to change her life for the better. When her ex in-laws suggest she goes on the honeymoon to Australia, she agrees. And what better than to take her childhood friend Patrick, who she has just re-connected with. A honeymoon with another man, and a journey of self-discovery!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - it was witty, uplifting, and comforting. I loved the contemporary nature of the story which was unpredictable and kept me guessing the whole way through. This book is a perfect balance of light-hearted holiday romance but also Annie’s personal journey of self-discovering. Annie’s character is so relatable, and I loved the deep exploration of her emotions and doubt.
It is a wonderful escapist book and I so wished I had read it on a beach in the sun. Laura Jane Williams has managed to create such a beautiful romance, combined with a moving come of age element. The whole thing was totally relatable and addictive.
I highly recommend this book - I cannot wait to read what Laura Jane Williams writes next!
What a wonderful story, absolutely loved it. It's one of those stories that consumes you & you just want to keep reading to the end to discover if it all ends well. A first for me from this author, but look forward to more from her
I received this book as an advanced reader copy from NetGalley. I truly enjoyed it and it is the perfect beach read. Annie is jilted by her university sweetheart on the day of her wedding. Devastated she runs into an old friend named Patrick and through a series of coincidences they join together to use Annie’s honeymoon in Australia and maybe even find love...
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book, as I don’t read many Romance Novels, but the main plot was amazing and I loved the fact that Laura had chosen a mixture of Male and Female characters to feature within the main plot.
The story was told really intimately with plenty of different plot lines to allow the reader something to get their teeth into which I appreciated whilst reading.
Through reading this book, I also loved the development of the leading character Annie as well and the ups and downs of her developing relationship with Patrick as well.
There were some things that happened that I expected to happen and some that happened that I wasn’t expecting to happen.
After 10 years together, Annie is shocked when Alexander is a no show on their wedding day. When his parents suggest she still take the honeymoon, she asks Patrick whom she met at the gym to accompany her. Patrick and Annie have a shared history and she feels that because he knew her back when she was her happiest, he can help her become that person again. The friends head off to Australia in need of some rest and relaxation.
I love that despite being a jilted bride with a horrid mother, Annie kept plugging forward and tried to make the most out of her circumstances. She didn’t let them define her. The author created a wonderful voyage of self discovery with a character who was up to trying new things and being true to herself rather than being who she was expected to be. A modern romance with forced diversity, it’s not for everyone. However, at a time when travel is restricted, it would be a welcome read for those with wanderlust as the author’s descriptive detail of Australia is dreamy.
Thank you to Laura Jane Williams, Avon Books UK, and NetGalley for the gifted advance copy. I was under no obligation to provide a review.
Publishes June 10, 2021
All the summer vibes! Easy, light, predicable read but still very much enjoyable
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
When Annie is set to marry her long term partner Alexander, the worst happens for a bride and she is abandoned on her wedding day.
Trying to heal her broken heart, she turns to fitness and joins a local boot camp where she runs into an old childhood friend, aka, Patrick. The pair really do gel and she soon looks at life differently for the first time in a long time.
A boozy day in the pub leads to Annie asking Patrick on the “honeymoon” of a lifetime....thats right, the honeymoon she should have been going on with her new husband.
Will this bring Patrick and Annie closer together? Or will it be the biggest mistake ever?
I really did love this book and Laura Jane Williams is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I found myself actually laughing out loud at this book and really envisioned everything that was written in this book.
All of the characters were very likeable and I got “sex and the city” vibes from the core 4 friendship group. The book explored all the different relationships Annie had in life, and I found her complex relationship with her Mother fascinating and I have to admit that at times, I found her infuriating.
This is a book that I would hands down recommend to anyone looking for a light hearted escape. I loved every minute of it.
Thank you to Avon books for letting sending me a copy to access via Netgalley in return for an honest review.
Cute and quick to read book!
I really like the hero of this book but I have a problem to click with the heroine
Love the plot though!
One of my favorite romantic tropes executed in a charmingly heartfelt and awesomely diverse poolside read. A little fluffy in how they didn't consider the things they'd need to address when they got back to a post-vacation rhythm, and once they did, how seamlessly things worked out with simply space. Yet, feel good nonetheless. Add this book to your must read list when it comes out in June 2021 and thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
After reading Our Stop and The Love Square I was so excited when @avon_books approved my request for an arc of Laura’s upcoming release on @netgalley 🥰
Annie is jilted at the altar by her university sweetheart. She’s distraught that the man she planned to spend the rest of her life with would be so cruel to not even express his doubt before she arrived at the church. In attempt to recover, she takes 6 weeks off work and begins her journey of being the “new Annie” starting off with going to boot camp where she reconnects with Patrick from her days in summer camp. Her in-laws encourage her to take the honeymoon to Australia as its non refundable so after many drinks, Annie and Patrick decide to go together. Is this a disaster waiting to happen or are they both just what the other needs?
I loved the idea of this novel. A woman finding her independence after being jilted? Sounds just like an episode of Sex and the City which I’ve been binging this lockdown. I really enjoyed seeing the relationship between Annie and Patrick blossom and her evolving as a character. However, the last third of the novel when they are back home just felt really rushed and thrown together? Annie’s relationship with her mother becomes miraculously fixed after one wishy-washy argument/conversation. I feel like if the author had reduced the descriptive language used throughout the first half of the book that this part of the story could have been developed further without verging on being longer than her other books.
Overall a very cute read and this would have been an ideal novel for the side of the pool/beach if we were allowed on holiday right now
I enjoyed Laura Jane Williams two previous novels but for me this was her best yet, I think it’s the characters in this that made the difference although the descriptions of Australia were certainly uplifting too. We meet Annie on her wedding day or to be technically accurate what should have been her wedding day as the groom jilted her, in the days after she finds solace in exercising and bumps into Patrick, a face from the past. Patrick is still also reeling from his last relationship but when Annie has the chance to go on what would have been her honeymoon she gambles on Patrick joining her.
I liked the cracks in both of these characters, Patrick seems to be very live for the moment but in part it’s a coping mechanism whereas Annie has low self worth and has just settled for what she’s given. They’re both very easy characters to warm to and it’s definitely great to escape to Australia for a while if only on paper. This could easily have been a rebound cliche but it’s not and there’s really heart and emotion amongst it but overall a very positive feel, 9/10.
I read "The Lucky Escape" in two sittings - such a fun read! Annie and Patrick were delightful, as were the supporting characters. I appreciated that there was some real life tension to their relationship; this made their romance believable and made the book very hopeful! Also, wrapped it all up with the perfect epilogue! Highly recommend.
Another heartwarming, uplifting novel from one of the queens of romantic comedy. I absolutely loved The Lucky Escape, especially the scenes in Australia which were perfect escapism during a dreary winter in lockdown. Laura Jane Williams never fails to make me smile with her beautiful characters, sweet romances, and wonderful stories. Perfect for fans of Beth O'Leary and Mhairi McFarlane.
The escape I needed!
I read The Lucky Escape during lockdown, with no hope of travelling further than the local park and it was perfect escapism. I loved the journey Annie took, both to Australia & on the road to accepting herself, realising what is important to her and taking chances.
This would be the perfect beach read and I will definitely read more by this author (I’ve previously read, enjoyed & recommended ‘The Love Square’, but this was even better). Thanks to #NetGalley & the publisher for my free advance copy in return for an unbiased review.
This book is an escape and i unapologetically loved it. Yes, yes, it was predictable in some ways and obviously there needs to be a happy ending but it was well done. I enjoyed the writing very much and the Characters were well done. When the book opens with Annie being left at the alter, I was sucked in immediately and I was rooting for major personal growth to take place.
The one thing that bugged me about the book was there was never a scene in which we find out the motives of her inlaws for gifting her this amazing non-honeymoon. It felt like a missed opportunity. It was so overly generous of them, they didn’t have to do it, they didn’t object to her bringing another man with her, there has to be a reason.
I also appreciated that Annie was a genius lady scientist, who was friends with another genius lady scientist who supported each other.
4.5 ⭐️
What a cute read! The Lucky Escape is about a girl who gets left at the alter and how she finds herself (and maybe romance) afterward. Breakups suck but they are usually for the best and help us learn. How love how the author really captures the growth that Annie goes through. You really can see a difference in her character from the beginning to the end.
Sometimes the book reads more like a a movie script. Like scene here. Then scene there. But overall it’s very cute!
Thanks NetGalley and Avon publishing for letting me read the ARC ebook.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams seemed straight forward and predictable, but I was wrong. I liked the way the author took her time letting the protagonist process her grief, anger, and confusion about who she is alone. The travel in the book made me envious of their escape. This truly was a Lucky Escape and an enjoyable one at that. This book combines soul-searching and self-fulfillment with fun and flirty. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoyed The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren or Shipped by Angie Hockman.
Thank you for sharing this book to read and review though NetGalley!
Annie arrives at her wedding only to find out that her fiancé Alexander has told the planner he won’t be coming. After a mopey few weeks where Annie hides out, she meets Patrick who she recognises from when they were young teens, at her new bootcamp class.
After a bit too much to drink he suggests and she agrees for him to go with her on her Australian honeymoon which her “non-in-laws” insist she use. Patrick soon shares his own sad situation with Annie. Despite it being so soon after her non-wedding, they get together.
But when they come home and have to deal with the realities of daily life and the other people in their life, Annie gets cold feet.
I really enjoyed how Annie learns through Patrick to see how she has stuck to emotional patterns that aren’t working for her any longer. I enjoyed reading this story, and would recommend to a friend.
Annie has just been left at the altar by her boyfriend of 10 years. One morning, a chance meeting at a boot camp class, will lead her on a honeymoon without her supposed-to-be-husband, and a journey of finding out who she really wants to be. This story gave us some truly lovely characters, but it also asked questions to Annie that would be good for the reader to answer as well. I loved the settings and the humor. I would definitely read another by this author.
A book must hit the spot just right if I physically LAUGH OUT LOUD and this book did it twice! I'll leave it up to you to figure out which scenes made me LMAO. This is a totally uplifting book with both highs and low "oh no!" moments and another amazing woman in STEM main character from Laura Jane Williams.
There were a few occasions where I was completely taken out of the book in disbelief. Firstly "G2g" is far more used by millennials (if anything that generation created it) than current teenagers. There could have been another abbreviation or slang term used instead because I can't believe Annie wouldn't know G2g at all and it unfortunately made the book feel very outdated. Secondly the way boobs are brought up in saucy sex scenes feels very juvenile.
The story is about a lot more than just the non-honeymoon especially with the last section based in London/Antwerp in which SO MUCH HAPPENED. I appreciate it is a complete life change but I almost felt like a different book. I guess that's what happens with great writing really transporting me to Australia and dropping me right back in Europe with a different mood. Contrary to other reviewers, I think Antwerp sounded wonderful and it is totally normal to temporarily lose your mind over an unexpected option or to realise you like your industry when you get a promotion opportunity!
While I appreciated some elements of the ending, if Annie didn't end up with Patrick and he was just a manic pixie dream boy/rebound, I would have been OK with that too.
Other elements of the book are only OK. I just finished the book and couldn't tell you the names of anyone else in the Core Four. The casual NB and queer references are chill to me but can be considered tokenistic as they aren't explored at all. In addition Mala's stereotypical overbearing Asian family and the archetype confident best friend can be considered racial stereotypes. This book includes the tropes of getting wise advice from the cute elderly or the cute young. It didn't bother me too much but it is in every movie so I found it boring.
Despite the negatives I have laid out in this review, I am definitely recommending this book to my friends who enjoyed Our Stop and will be looking forward to the author's next romance release.
A cute romance in a gorgeous setting that's just as much about self growth and self love as it is about the love between the two characters. An overall easy read that has you smiling through a lot of it. I did feel a distance from the main character as I was reading, like even though it was first person perspective I wasn't really seeing inside her mind. #netgalley #theluckyescape
If you are looking for a light summer beach read this is good. It was a quick read and easy to follow. Could be a bit predictable but that is not a bad thing at times.
Annie is jilted at the alter by her boyfriend Alexander. She then reconnects with old friend Patrick and they go on the honeymoon together. Will they survive their friendship or more?
It was a bit of a slow start but once I got part of way through it it was a good read. Thehoneymoon chapters are pure escapism. The story had good characters, fantastic locations and was well written.
I would recommend to others that enjoy a good rom com or romance. This is the first of this authors I have read and I will give others a go.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for ARC in exchange for an honest review
Another unconventional romance from Laura – this one follows a jilted bride who goes on her honeymoon with a childhood friend she re-met at the gym! Unlike her previous novels, this one is in first person, which I think really helps you get inside the heroine’s head as she has to figure out her new life. And the honeymoon chapters are absolutely perfect escapism, lots of luxurious hotel rooms, delicious meals, and wine-tasting adventures.
When the lovely folks at Avon Books asked me if I was interested in reading an ARC of her forthcoming novel, The Lucky Escape, I absolutely jumped at the chance.
Our narrator Annie is so excited about her dream wedding to her university sweetheart Alexander, but, when she arrives at the church in her designer dress, she finds out that he has left her at the altar. She is understandably devastated. A chance meeting with her old friend, Patrick, reminds Annie of the girl she used to be when they knew each other in their teens. In a spontaneous moment, Annie decides that she will still take her all-expenses-paid dream honeymoon to Australia and asks Patrick to come with her.
In all honesty, I think this is the author’s best work yet. The character development is incredibly strong and I could really relate to the journey of self-reflection and discovery that our protagonist Annie goes on. (I wouldn’t be sorry to be able to relate a little more to the all expenses paid holiday bit but a girl can dream!) The main characters are messy, flawed and complicated and that, for me, is what makes them so very human. This isn’t a picture perfect romance but it feels real and that is one of the things I loved most about it.
If you want a nice, light summer holiday read then you can definitely enjoy The Lucky Escape on that level. There are some sections that are laugh-out-loud, spit-your-drink-over-yourself funny and there are some really tender moments too. Underneath that though, there are some deeper questions around personal development and fulfilment that are really carefully handled by the author. It left me feeling all the feelings, but the overriding emotions were of joy and hope.
This is my first Laura Jane Williams book (I know, I know, I can't believe I haven't read One Stop). But it won't be last (looking at you, One Stop).
This book was full of fantastic characters, with a fun narrative and BRILLIANT locations. The author really knows how to conjure a setting and pull you in.
At times I felt as though the relationship didn't quite have the chemistry I was looking for, but that's very much a personal preference and the romance still shined through. I was invested in the entire journey though and I loved the premise, Annie jetting off on our honeymoon without Alexander - realising that he was not, in fact The One, was just wonderful.
I highly recommend and this is a perfect summer read.
In the acknowledgements LJW says she hopes it’s her most joyful and escapist novel to date, and that sums it up perfectly. A wonderful antidote to ‘stuck at home and can’t travel anywhere’ my only criticism is that I now have acute FOMO in the knowledge that I will never be able to afford a luxury business class trip to Australia. Annie and Patrick are incredibly likeable and this is a gorgeous easy to read story that is devoid of trauma - it was like a hug - which is exactly what I needed, and I read it in one go.
I read this book in 24 hours, literally binged it.
I initially was not a fan of Annie the protagonist, but as her character developed and she found herself during her escape away I could relate with her regards a lot of her life decisions.
Why can’t I find a Patrick? Annie is a very lucky lady and I found the creep up of romance between the pair very exciting.
It made me more confident in my decisions confirming that I don’t need the worlds approval!
A very easy read and very enjoyablex I would recommend.
I found this book slow to start and hard to connect with the character however I persevered and it was a great read. I loved the "honeymoon" made me want to visit Australia and I loved the relationship between Annie and Freddie
This book was so much fun! The non-honeymoon trip with a long lost friend, there was so much chemistry between Annie and Patrick and plenty of funny moments along the way.
I loved reading from Annie’s perspective and really enjoyed seeing her transform back into the person she used to be before she started to dim herself to please everyone else.
I also really loved the chemistry between Annie and Patrick from the moment they reconnected and enjoyed seeing it play out and it was great to see their relationship blossom from lingering looks and flirty banter into so much more.
Overall I really enjoyed this book, it’s a perfect summer read and I definitely recommend it!
This unique rom-com will appeal to romance readers everywhere! Lovable characters, and it makes the reader feel as if they are on their own vacation.
A huge thanks to Avon for my e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. It was the blurb that sold it for me- a woman ditched at the altar? Sign me up!
The book tells the story of Annie Wiig who was abandoned by her ex, Alexander, on her wedding day. A chance encounter with a former acquaintance with an old friend leads to her finding herself and finding love when she decides to go on her honeymoon. This book is a delight and the perfect read on a cold day or just a sunny day. The author captures you with a plot that captures you and her humor is priceless. What a delightful read!
This was too cute! I wanted to read a book that I knew I would love so I picked this one from my NetGalley account.
First off I related to Annie so much! She is so hard on herself and doesn't know what she deserves. She believes she has to be perfect and literally always helps others without taking care of herself. I feel like EVERY girl can relate.
Also the fact that she did drama camp was a bonus cause drama camp when I was in grade school was THE SHIT!
But this was Annie's book. It had romance, but it was her journey. Sure she finds love, but she is finally putting herself first and that's what we all need to learn from her. That you don't need to worry about what others think or what society pressures us to do. Do what you love and do what is right for you. Who cares what other people think. I LOVE THAT. I love reading a book and feeling like I'm learning more about how to be a badass boss who knows what she wants. Don't do what's expected all the time. Even if you family thinks a certain way or there are road blocks- you know what is right for you.
So, yes this book was about Annie, but we have to talk about how awesome Patrick was. He was exactly what Annie needed. He even got frustrated with her being so hard on herself. And he reminded her of how amazing she was and how she can find that again. He was a free spirit and almost Annie's opposite at times, but they really just worked together.
So this book was so sweet and so inspiring. I thought I would be bored because I've read books with he same kind of idea, but I really liked how it wasn't as basic as I thought it would be.
So five stars! And I need to look more into this author for sure!
This is the first book I have read by this author, it made me laugh out loud throughout, a really feel good read.
I would highly recommend this book to my friends.
After being with her boyfriend for ten years, Annie is left with the realization that she has literally been left at the alter. After confronting this devastation, she quickly realizes she needs to make some changes within herself. One of those changes involves an old friend named Patrick. Patrick reminds her of a simpler, more freeing time so she takes the plunge and brings Patrick along on her solo honeymoon.
The Lucky Escape is a feel good rom-com while also going more in depth and showing the growth process of Annie. She makes mistakes, says things she regrets, and is extremely indecisive. This is not an awful thing but it made me not connect with Annie as I would have liked to. Her journey is her own. Ultimately it helped her get to a place where she was happy with herself.
Overall, it is a great read and I finished it in one sitting. It is well written with many great characters. It has the humor but also a journey to Annie’s self-love, wherever that takes her.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the advanced copy for an honest review.
After being jilted on her wedding day Annie doesn't know what to do with herself so after a while decides to get fit to try and take her mind off it and joins a bootcamp. After a couple of sessions she bumps into an old friend Patrick who used to go to a drama group in the summer when they were at school.
They start to meet up after the bootcamp classes as just friends but when he ex's family insist she goes on the honeymoon to Australia. After a boozy evening Patrick suggests he goes with her to keep her company and Annie agrees.
A lovely story of 2 people getting over a broken heart and discovering each other
Annie Wiig is excited that it’s finally her wedding day. She has been with Alexander for ten years, and she ready to make this huge leap into marriage. After getting ready with her sister and best friend, she arrives at the church to see her wedding planner looking worried. She is told that Alexander is not here and that he sent a simple text saying that the wedding is off. Devastated, Annie has to move on from being stood up at the alter. While moving on, she goes to fitness classes and meets a guy she used to know from drama camp in high school. The two pick up right where they left off. When Annie’s almost mother in law asks her to take her honeymoon, Annie mentions it to Patrick, who wants to come. The two embark on a three week all inclusive vacation to Australia. Annie learns that she has been holding herself back for 10 years and that she’s ready to let go of her insecurities and really live, and find true love.
I thought this book was adorable. I was hooked from the very first page. Laura Jane Williams writes with such authenticity that I felt that these characters were real people. The conversations and witty banter were charming, realistic, and hilarious. The situations the characters got themselves into were relatable and so funny. I loved that the author blended raw emotions and heartbreak with silly scenes and funny characters. This book was a pleasure to read and I will be thinking of it for a long time!
Another winning book from Laura Jane Williams! I love the way she writes and the beautiful way she weaves the characters together. I shipped Annie and Patrick from the moment they reconnected at bootcamp and I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in their love story. I laughed out loud during the naked spa scene and when Annie texted Patrick instead of her friends (still laughing as I recall those scenes!) I smiled with glee when Patrick got along Annie's little sister, Freddie. Great characters, great story and lots of love and fun in the sun- I really want to travel to Australia now!
She’s done it again, folks! I have been a fan of Laura for a while now, and I love her quirky romance novels more than I can express in words. And I have to say, her newest book The Lucky Escape did not disappoint.
In The Lucky Escape, we follow the story of Annie, a woman left at the alter by the perfect man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with. Unable to get a hold of him for an explanation, Annie does what any jilted bride would do: she wallows in her sadness, and then pulls herself up by her bootstraps to get her life back in order. Part of this is figuring out what to do with the all expenses paid honeymoon to Australia her would-be in-laws insist she still goes on. Little does she know that she would meet an old acquaintance who would join her on this trip, and change her life forever.
Laura has this way of making you feel all the emotions her characters are feeling through her writing. I felt myself getting weepy alongside Annie, feeling butterflies alongside Annie, and falling in love alongside Annie. While the plot does follow the general romance novel trope, therefore making it slightly predictable, I find that my joy when reading this book came not from what was happening, but who it was happening to.
This was a beautifully written quirky romance novel, that is the perfect summer read. So grab yourself a copy of the book, lay out next to the pool, and sip that blended adult beverage. I promise, you will not regret it.
I've been following Laura and reading her books for years, and everything she writes is an absolutely delight, so this one was no surprise. It's hard to match the chemistry and utter joy that she captured in Our Stop, but The Lucky Escape manages to do it. The plot of this one was light, but her characters--Annie in particular, are relatable, and I can root for them while seeing pieces of them in myself. Annie finds herself alone at the church on her wedding day, her fiancé having fled and having to pick up the pieces herself A chance meeting with an old friend and a honeymoon across Australia not gone to waste take the reader from London, around the world and back. Thank you Laura for writing stories where not every piece of the characters' lives are perfect by the end, but the main character grows and learns things about herself, and the reader has so much fun along the way.
This was such a cute read! I loved the dynamic and the chemistry between the characters, and the story itself of course. Annie was so relatable, and her character development is excellent. Her and Patrick definitely make a great couple. I think that I might actually try to read other books by this author since I adored this one.
In The Lucky Escape Annie is left at alter and he didn't have the nerve to tell her he wasn't coming. He told the wedding planner through....text. His parents reach out to her and encourage her to go on the honeymoon to Australia that they have already paid for. After some soul searching Annie decides to go and she takes a long lost friend from her childhood....another man. This is a great story about allowing yourself to be happy and how the choices we make might not always be popular but we really do need to do what is best for us. There is a plan for our lives and it might not be what we thought at first!
Jilted at the alter, Annie thinks her life is over. She's spent the last 10 years giving everything to her relationship.
When her nearly mother-in-law tells her to go on the honeymoon anyway, Annie invites an old school friend that she has recently become reacquainted with.
An emotional, funny rollercoaster extremely enjoyable read.
This hit every good spot for me. I cared for the characters. It felt like going on a long vacation. The romance had some of those fun situations that make a rom com so fun (non-honeymoon honeymoon, naked spa, sharing a hotel room) but it was also paced out really well so that it felt organic and like it was being set up for something long-lasting. And Patrick, my gosh. I have a feeling like he’s going to be one of those characters that stays with me, and hopefully his way of living in the moment and not taking life too seriously will too.
On its surface this has the romance and lightness that we need in a dark time (and travel!) and I was telling myself “one more chapter” long past my bedtime, but it’s also a book filled with great conversations, which is pretty much my dream. (And is something that I’ve found to characterize Laura Jane Williams’ books.) Conversations about life, expectations, friendship, jobs (how it’s okay not to love what you do, and it’s okay to want to enjoy something you spend so much of your time on), being adventurous sometimes and choosing to stay put when it feels right, and doing what makes you happy without needing to ask permission. (I’ve also recently re-discovered my love for Sheryl Crow’s ‘If It Makes You Happy’ so it was a thrill to see it in this book.)
I enjoy having these conversations with books just based on what the characters themselves are going through, so I loved seeing them have conversations about these insecurities and perspectives and figure out what it meant for the choices they made in their lives. I’m on a high after reading this and determined to be more confident in my own choices and less concerned with “should.” I know that sounds like a big thing, but it’s books like this that remind me and help me be more confident in myself.
I escaped with this gem of a book over the weekend, adored it!
What would you do if you were jilted at the Aisle on your wedding day? Annie finds herself in this predicament and a few weeks later, she sets off on her planned honeymoon with a handsome man, who isn’t the one she intended to marry...
I loved the scene setting, the romance, the back stories.. absolute belter of a book!
Annie really did have a lucky escape although it didn’t feel like it at the time. She was jilted at the altar after ten years in a relationship and is left reeling. Her should have been in laws encourage her yo ho in the honeymoon anyway so she does. And her life is changed forever. It’s a book about choices, losing ourself to another, finding ourself again and grabbing life with both hands. A perfect summer read!
This was a nice quick read for me and I got exactly what I wanted from it.
Annie was left jilted at the alter and unsure how to move on from that. With one random encounter with an old friend and her almost in-laws encouraging her to still go on her honeymoon, Annie had no idea what was going to happen but she was excited for the change.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
I was so excited as this really appeals to me.
However as a visually impaired reader I did request this book in audio format
Sadly I I only received the pdf format version (as I have wth a few others)
Which is proving extremely difficult to read.
I gave attempted as I was, as i say, looking forward to this title very much and the format is very difficult and unable to magnify the text.
Therefore as I am unable to read i am unable to leave a correcr feedback on this occasion. I have however marked as a 5* as I'm required to do so in order to leave this review .
Should I receive a audio version I would be honoured to be able to provide feedback!
Thank uou di much

A cute little rom-com, and an easy read. Once in a while, in-between thrillers and more heavy books, I like a light read, so I was very happy with The Lucky Escape.
Wen Alexander leaves Annie on what was supposed to be their wedding day, Annie does not think she will be able to get through it.
A lucky encounter with Patrick, a childhood friend (sort of) will lead her on the path of recovery. First stop: Australia, for her non-honeymoon, courtesy of her would-have-been in-laws. Once there, she will re-learn who she is, how to have fun, and what she wants her life to be like.
I loved Our Stop and enjoyed The Love Square so I was so excited to get the chance to read Laura Jane Williams' new book, The Lucky Escape. We meet Annie on her wedding day when the last thing she's expecting is to be jilted at the alter by the guy she's loved since uni. But Alexander leaves Annie broken-hearted and single without any closure. Encouraged to take the honeymoon by her embarrassed in-laws, a chance encounter with an old friend gives Annie a last-minute travel buddy in Patrick. The setup is handled really well and feels natural, even though technically it's 'spend 3 solid weeks with a man you barely know'.
I read this book in about 5 hours. It was the perfect escapism. I really like Laura Jane Williams' writing and how she creates chemistry that jumps off the page. I also love a tale about women discovering how worthy they actually are and not settling for less. I've read books with similar premises before, like Unhoneymooners, (which I also love) but this one definitely feels the most realistic? We also follow Annie and Patrick when they get home which I liked. To see how real-life continues when you're back from a fantasy.
This is the perfect holiday read and if you're not going anywhere anytime soon thanks to the annoyingly persistent coronavirus, it can help you take a holiday from life for a few hours.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams hasn’t been getting the strongest reviews but I think that’s a little unfair. The genre is light reading and romance and that’s not my usual go-to as I normally prefer crime dramas. In between tense and often disturbing storylines which expose the baser side of life, I need a balance with a kinder, sweeter read and The Lucky Escape ticked those boxes. Jilted at the altar, a chance meeting with an old sensitive, handsome friend, a sumptuous life opportunity (to fly business class and live first class on a non-honeymoon) and falling in love is a fairly tried and tested (and predictable) formula but The Lucky Escape is well told. Other readers seem to struggle with Annie’s wobbles on her return to London but I think that’s one of the most authentic parts of the story. How many years did I return from holiday refreshed, energised and determined to keep a better perspective and work-life balance only to fall on day three when reality bites and the sunshine and freedom seems to be a distant memory and just a temporary escape from reality. I also thought the tense relationship between Annie and her mum was decently told and handled within the brief time given to it. Overall I suppose I’m defending this read. Yes it’s a fairly light and predictable romance but it’s well told and with a lovely glimpse into Australia, a peek into Antwerp and the reality of the cost of London living. There’s honesty from Annie’s friends about relationships and life choices. Also Patrick’s struggle with guilt about finding love with someone else felt honest and was sensitively done. In short, while this isn’t my favourite genre I enjoyed the book and reckon it’s a 3.5-4 star read and I’ll round the score up, as I appreciate the unusual restraint in relation to bad language and sexual scenes. They were both there but didn’t pepper the narrative or get tediously and cringingly explicit.
I think I fell knew this was going to be a book I would love through the end within the first two chapters.
This book is not just a romance, it’s also breaking your heart and mending it again. I have never fallen in love twice in one book, but with this one I did. This books made you go through the motions of falling in love with Alexander making the jilted bride situation so much more heartbreaking. Then you go through the process of heartbreak and healing freedom and then falling in love all over again.
The escape into Australia then a bit of London followed by Brussels really made me yearn for traveling much more than I already was.
I liked all the secondary characters, the dynamics between the dad and h, and most definitely the sisterhood bond.
I’ve never seen groveling like I did in this book. The way a breakup was captured was so realistic , it pained me to read through but new it was necessary in order to move on. That scene in the middle of the night in the kitchen. I’m going to remember that for a while.
Patrick is a short hair pixie girl (haha) that is vibrant and full of life. He was exactly what was needed and I loved seeing their relationship grow.
My only suggestion would be to have a more thought out end than the rushed ending. I think all the characters deserved more. Patrick deserved more than was given to him by h and I wanted to see that resolution given more thought then just that final scene.
I highly recommend this read. It will immerse you into a different world . I know I was.
I was gripped from the start with the description of being left at the altar and the sympathy I felt towards the character and her lovely little sister.
This book really inspired me, the theme YOLO (sorry!) really does apply and it has inspired me and given me a boost, which I really wasn't expecting.
It was well written, I loved the descriptions of Australia as I have been to a few places visited and the author really tugged at the emotions felt during a break up and recovering, to really find yourself.
I loved it and look forward to reading more by Laura Jane Williams.
Laura Jane Williams is an author who's books i always enjoy! Lets just say this book did not disappoint.
I found myself laughing out loud several times. All the characters were a joy to read which is a surprise for me because their is usually somebody i dislike.
This was such a light hearted easy read and i will be reccomending it to all of my friends.
I look forward to veing able to buy a physical copy
I have been a fan of Laura's previous books and hoped this would live up to those - it definitely did!
It was a light, funny, enjoyable read, which had me both laughing and crying. I loved getting to know both Annie and Patrick, as they got to know eachother, and the whole non-honeymoon storyline was such a joy to read. This was just the sort of thing I needed to dive into at the moment, and I'm so glad I did!
The Lucky Escape was definitely a lovely escapist novel! I enjoyed the development of Annie’s character throughout the book. After experiencing such a traumatic break-up, she’s obviously feeling delicate as she figures out how to navigate the rest of her life. She learns how to stand up for herself and how to ask for what she wants instead of pleasing other people.
Bumping into Patrick felt like a nice, organic meet-cute, and I liked the friendship vibe that we got from them to begin with. Part of me wondered if they would remain just friends during their trip, or if something more would develop and I thought the ambiguity to start with was good. It really let your imagination wander as a reader.
I do think the first part of the book was my favourite - the jilting and the “honeymoon” to Australia all flowed so nicely. Returning home from their trip didn’t engage me as much, as their relationship changed and they both changed as characters, too. But that also felt like a realistic trope - they’ve been in their own little bubble for three weeks, things are bound to feel different when they return home.
The ending was a little cheesy, but it’s very feel-good so I didn’t mind that too much at all!
The Lucky Escape was a light, enjoyable and entertaining read that I easily breezed through. Annie and Alexander had been together since university and were going to get married, but then Alexander ditches her on their wedding day and she is left heartbroken. She later meets her old friend Patrick, and ends up taking him with her as a travel buddy on her honeymoon to Australia. There she has an amazing time and he helps her to heal herself and realise that life is too short to not explore and do the things that really make you happy in life.
I really enjoyed their relationship and dynamic, and there were quite a few laugh out loud moments!
I will also definitely be checking out some of the Authors other books.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon books for the E-ARC.
Annie may have felt lucky to escape from a life that made her feel less than, complacent and a shadow of herself but I feel lucky to have the ability to read this book. I think we can all identify relationships like Alexander where we no longer know or like whom we have become but in dissociation, we learn to love ourselves and what we are meant to be. As Patrick said, it is written. Annie with the support of the Core Four moved on and let Alexander know, she never gave him a second thought. She got the life she deserves.
A great escapist holiday read with some lovely characters, great one liners, and thoroughly engrossing writing.
The only slight letdown for me was the naming of the characters (I am a truly petty person - Sophie Kinsella occasionally does this to me too) as the surnames just made it feel too twee.
For people less petty than I, a magnificent read. And one I highly recommend - brilliant writing and I shall certainly be seeking out more by this author.
A brilliant holiday read. I loved the characters and how the story unfolded. The 'honeymoon' made me want to travel and explore new places and enjoy the freedom of being away.
The story told of not being afraid to make changes and sometimes what is expected of you isn't the right thing to do - a lesson for us all.
Ah this book is lovely! Sometimes you just need a good romance. It’s about Annie who is dumped by text, while arriving at the church in her wedding dress. Fortunately she has lovely in-laws who still let her take her honeymoon! She decides to go, and brings a childhood friend, Patrick. Well.. I think you can guess what happens next?
Annie is the lovely troubled protagonist, reeling from her breakup and going through all the things that went wrong, and truly finding herself and what makes her happy. Patrick is the golden retriever type of guy who is always happy and really helps Annie recover, but of course he also has his history.
It’s refreshing but at the same time cliché enough that it’s comforting. A truly classic summer read!
When Annie is jilted at the alter by her childhood sweetheart, Alexander, she's devastated. She had her whole life planned out and now she's 32, single and almost homeless.
When her very generous would be in-laws offer her the chance to go on her honeymoon she thinks there's no way she could possibly go on her own, until she meets Patrick, an old friend from her teenage drama camp years.
Patrick and Annie head off on a once in a lifetime 3 week holiday to Australia where they both come back very different people.
This book was so lovely. You can always rely on Laura Jane Williams to bring the feel good factor. I felt all warm and fuzzy inside reading this and I was rooting for the character all the way through. I will definitely be recommending this to all my customers looking for a feel good, heart warming, romantic read.
Reading this gave me the holiday and escapism we all want so badly right now but can’t have. Laura has a special way of creating male characters who are the definition of perfection, prepare to fall in love with him! Where can we find a Patrick?
It’s a light, fun, humorous read with some important topics interlaced. I loved Annie’s character and seeing her develop and grow throughout the story. She’s fiercely loyal which we got to see with her friendship group, the Core Four and her little sister Freddie. Laura has fast become an auto-buy author for me, so I was over the moon when I got approved on NetGalley to read an advanced copy. If you loved Our Stop and The Love Square, you’ll certainly rate this one too!
Thank you Avon Books UK, Laura Jane Williams and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read and review an ARC copy of The Lucky Escape! I will post my review on my Instagram page on the Publication Date:June 10th, 2021.
I loved this book so much! If you’re looking for vacation vibes and another shot at finding love… this book is for you! I was rooting for Annie the entire time and wanted nothing but the best for her. After her fiancé leaves her at the altar she’s given the chance to remember who she was and where she truly wants to be. I love how Annie evolved throughout the book to be a much stronger person and learn to accept being ok with uncertainty. I swooned for Annie and Patrick so much! I felt like their run in was really organic and realistic. I appreciated that it wasn’t insta love and the friends to lovers progression between the two of them was so so sweet. The idea of a Mona Lisa moment was gold lol I LOVE THAT IDEA! This is a perfect summer read!
Annie is jilted at the alter by her long term boyfriend, an horrific thing to happen to anyone. Her fiancé’s parents feel so bad about what their son has done that they encourage Annie to still go on the honeymoon that they were providing for the couple. (What a result, in my opinion, she escaped the cowardly, unfeeling ex and got a three week five star holiday to Australia as compensation!). She decides in a drunken moment to invite a male friend that she has recently bumped into at the gym, which is her way of getting through being dumped! That’s the only far-fetched part of the story, in my opinion!
I loved the descriptions of the places visited and the growth of Annie now that she is single. Patrick, the old school friend is such a lovely guy, so adorable and insightful, but naturally with his own problems too! I found most of the characters very endearing especially Annie’s little sister Freddie - wise beyond her years!
I like to read romance, chick lit books in between the murder/mystery/police procedural genre that is probably my favourite and this one is a total ‘feel good’ read. It made me even more keen to visit Australia and Antwerp! There’s always a happy medium between too much in-depth description and not enough and the author got this absolutely spot on. Sydney, I’ve seen and heard lots about but Margaret River, Western Australia, sounds incredible and I’d definitely put that on my must-see places now!
This would be a perfect book to read on holiday! Highly recommended!
My thanks to the author, the publishers and to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in return for an honest, unedited review.
Seeing a new Laura Jane Williams book, being touted out there, I was like "Yes, please!", when I saw it was available to request as an arc! I have thoroughly enjoyed her first two books and knew this would be no different.
And, I was right. Obviously!
The Lucky Escape charts the emotional journey of Annie, a thirty-something woman who is jilted at the altar.
Life was all planned.
They'd been together since university, and lived together for all these years. Marriage was the next logical step, they thought.
Well, so Annie thought, but not Alexander.
She's left, with no contact from him, no idea what is going on.
Then she meets an old friend, Patrick, an acquaintance from her secondary school years.
As they rekindle their friendship, Annie is offered the chance to go away, to take the honeymoon she was meant to have, as a gift from who should have been her in-laws.
What better than a drunken dare with a still unfamiliar 'old' friend?
They both find themselves on the trip of a lifetime, in Australia.
Oh, my! What a situation to be in!
I did feel for Annie, though. Initially, I couldn't work out why she was so accepting of everything that was going on, but as the story went on, and more from her own childhood was revealed, it became much more apparent, why she was the way she was.
Patrick, what a sweetheart! I knew I wanted them to get together right from the off, but then, his own little secret made me doubt my instincts.
Annie has some strong-willed friends, behind her, who feature a bit, and a family I had mixed opinions about. But, I loved her sister, Freddie! Who knew a youngster could be so wise!
All in all, a great easy read, and definitely one to enjoy on the beach, if you get to one. But, then again, you could enjoy it anywhere!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
I have loved everything Laura Jane Williams has written - this book is no exception.
I was totally engrossed and fell into this world. One of the things I love about Williams novels is they just feel so real! I sometimes find 'chick-lit' a little far-fetched or overly dramatic. This book just felt so real and I felt so connected to the central character of Annie. I really felt for her, and could see a lot of myself in her. Laura Jane Williams definitely knows how to write realistic, yet loveable characters.
I also had the chance to listen to the audio book version (as well as the kindle version) and that was superb!! Carrie Hope Fletcher reads so well, and I think her narration really helps me to fall in love with the characters. Fletcher is superb - even if her Australian Accent is a bit hit and miss!
This book is the perfect summer read. The book spans months, and locations. I was gripped from the start and I will be recommending this book to chick-lit and non chick-lit fans alike! Just brilliant!!
If you can I would recommend reading this via audio book too. Just has helped me to delve into Annie's world! I sped through this, and genuinely felt a bit sad when it was over.
Another hit from Laura Jane Williams and I can't wait for her next novel!
A light, funny, easy read - perfect escapism! I liked the characters and the the plot, whilst a little predictable was well unfolded. A perfect holiday read!
Laura Jane Williams is quickly becoming an auto-buy author for me, and I was thrilled when I heard that she had a new book coming out. This book follows Annie when, on the morning of her wedding, she was jilted by her husband to be Alexander. His parents are desperately embarrassed about the whole situation and let her go on the paid-for honeymoon with whomever she chooses. On a drunken night out Annie bumps into an old friend Patrick, with whom she has an instant attraction, and a drunken decision leads them to go on the 3-week honeymoon to Australia together and in typical Laura Jane Williams style everything blows up from there. I loved most of the characters in this book, especially Annie's 13-year-old younger sister Freddie, I found her so cute and so well-rounded. The plot although a little insta-lovey between the two main characters was super fun to follow and I really loved hearing about all of the holiday antics. Although this is quite a fluffy romance novel it does follow some harder-hitting topics and I enjoyed their presence throughout this book. I think I will probably read anything that Laura Jane Williams puts out from this point onwards - even if they are not all going to be 5-star reads, they are all so enjoyable and honestly so much fun.
4 out of 5 stars.
After Annie gets jilted at the altar she decides to go on her honeymoon with an old friend Patrick who she has just recently met up with again.
This is a cute story it's a quick read that is funny in parts and emotional in others. Annie and Patrick's characters were likeable and realistic and you couldn't help but root for them.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books for the ARC
This was a nice, lovely read. Very much about escapism and self-discovery in the wake of an emotional disaster. I would have preferred for the first part to go by faster (come on, get to the good stuff!) and it is fade to black in the bedroom (boo). I thought Patrick was a lot of fun and a good pairing with Annie, who had some good growth.
A feel good story, ups and down, delights and disappointments.
When Annie is jilted at the church, she was devastated, but fairly quickly realised that it was, indeed, A Lucky Escape! Over the next weeks she begins to find herself at last.
A lovely summer read, and I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this book from the very beginning to the last page. The themes of change, finding yourself and learning to be a little braver are beautifully written with intelligence, warmth and humour.
I'm a huge Laura Jane Williams fan after reading this gorgeous book. A wrong marriage and best friends turned lovers had me tearing through the pages. After reading Our Stop, I was beyond excited to get started on the lucky escape!
Travelling to Australia on a non-honeymoon was the story I didn’t know I needed right now. Loving the travel element and the way that Annie found herself throughout the book really resonated with me. A great, fun love story with bonus travel thrown in, definitely recommend. Thanks NetGalley!
I loved this! When Annie’s fiancé doesn’t turn up to the wedding she’s understandably devastated. Her intended in laws insist that she goes on the honeymoon they had arranged and paid for. Annie just isn’t sure who to take. At bootcamp she stumbles across an old friend from her round and carefree teenage days, and Annie decides to ask them to join her. This is a story of Annie finding herself and finally realising what it is she wants in life to make her happy. I really enjoyed this book.
Laura Jane Williams newest release is about Annie who has lost herself and has got stuck in her comfort zone for too long. So when her fiancé leaves her standing at the alter she goes on the honeymoon anyway and starts to discover a new lease on life.
I did really really enjoy this book and I will always love Laura Jane Williams writing style. But it fell a little bit flat for me after ADORING her other two books; Our Stop & The Love Square. What I love about her writing is that she's great at interlinking light hearted humour with deeper meaningful conversations, but I found the harder hitting topics lacked slightly in The Lucky Escape and it was definitely more in the rom-com chick lit genre.
I love Annie as a main character but I wish her "core 4" friendship was a little bit more flushed out as they felt a little two dimensional. I'm hoping, maybe wishful thinking, that they may get a little more attention in the published work coming out in June.
The ending felt a little rushed but overall I really enjoyed my time reading this book. But it's definitely more of a rom-com beach read type of book. Great for a chilled reading experience that will make you chuckle out loud and enjoy a cute summer romance story.
It’s the day of Annie’s wedding and the last thing she expected was to be left standing at the alter by her partner of 10 years, Alexander. Whilst venturing out in to single life, Annie bumps into an old friend, Patrick, who seems to bring Annie back to her old self. Annie still has the honeymoon to attend, could it be fate that she bumped into her old friend Patrick at the perfect time? And will he join her?
I really enjoyed this! It was a light, easy read. I loved the way Annie and Patrick’s relationship blossomed and Annie’s realisation that she was not herself whilst she was with Alexander. She would compromise with him, whilst being with Patrick brought out the best parts of her. Whilst the novel was focused on Annie and Patrick’s relationship, it was mainly about Annie starting afresh and realising what she deserves in life. Did she need a man? No. But did Patrick bring happiness to her life? Well, you lot will have to find out won’t you?!
I think this book would be a perfect ‘beach read’ as it is rather binge-worthy. I would happily take Annie’s place on a free honeymoon to Australia. Wouldn’t you?
First of all I would like to say that I really enjoyed this book so I gave it 3.5 stars rounded to 4. However, I'm going to lie if I say I liked Annie from the start. To begin with, I disliked her character which made it difficult to get into the book. I thought she was a little annoying and a bit too perfect but I guess that's what makes it good overall - her character development was good.
Pros:
I liked the gradual change in Annie's personality, I saw her from being very ordinary and afraid of taking risks and being too comfortable in her comfort zone. But throughout the book she became feisty, outgoing and confident which I liked.
I liked the friendships too - her super sweet younger sister, and her super supportive group of best friends! I really enjoyed the connection between Annie and Patrick and how their feelings, emotions and actions changed throughout the book.
I also liked the side relationships too (they weren't forgotten!!) - between Annie and her difficult mother - how they worked it out eventually.
The overall story was super cosy and fun -I really enjoyed it! I though the ending was also perfect - I like it when the book finishes in a good way and this did it for me! It also made me want to visit Australia!
Cons:
there wasn't too much about this book that I disliked but I didn't 100% love Annie. I liked her enough but I still felt she was slightly annoying even towards the end of the book but this was a minor negative.
I would recommend this to readers who love sweet contemporary books :)
A ten year relationship from university to the altar. Halted and sent in to tailspin. How do you come back? You go on what should of been your honeymoon with a friend.
A discovery of self and how not to settle for what you think is OK because that's all you deserve.
Career decisions, moving home and a new man. Momentous changes, all within a short space of time. Setting boundaries and learning to get what you truly deserve.
Heart warming, life reaffirming and that it's never too late to change.
After this year we could all definitely use an escape and that’s exactly what Annie got in The Lucky Escape after she gets left at the altar. Spiraling and heartbroken, Annie runs into an old friend Patrick and decides to take him with her on her honeymoon. Ultimately Patrick begins to show her just how awesome she is and just how lucky she was to get an escape from her marriage.
If you are looking for a romantic escape pick this one up. While it was somewhat over the top at times I could not put it down. I was rooting for Annie to figure out her life after it spiraled out of control and Patrick is honestly the perfect romantic lead – funny, goofy, quirky, handsome, and fully in tune with his emotions. Thank you Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the copy in exchange for my honest review.
Brilliant summer book. This was the fist I have read from Laura Jane Williams but I will definitely be reading the others. Being left at the altar was the starting point for this book and it took us through all the emotions before Annie started to pick herself up and living again. She meets up with an old friend, Patrick when she was at the gym and it was Patrick she took on her “honeymoon”. The second part of the book took you through their trip to Australia and how their relationship develops from friends to something more. This was a great storyline which I was dubious about but it worked. #honeymoon #NetGalley #Romance
This book is everything!! It follows Annie who is set to marry her long term partner Alexander who jilts her at the alter. In a crazy turn of events Annie meets a long lost friend from summer camp, Patrick, and the pair go on Annie’s honeymoon to Australia as friends.
This book had me laughing out loud, it was so wholesome and I loved how the characters and the story developed. It was nice to go on the journey with Annie as she realised that actually Alexander wasn’t the right match for her and she deserves so much more.
Book release date 10th June 2021
The lucky escape a feel good romcom for all. Annie Is getting married little does she know her finance Alex isn't. So after Annie is informed by her wedding planner the wedding is off she ofcourse is a mess Skip forward she bumps into a friend from drama camp who she hasn't seen in 15 years but they get on really well, so when she drunkenly invites Patrick to go on her would be honey moon with her they think its a great idea. Post booze they decide to YOLO it and go As this is a romance book you can see where we are going with this storyline.
I really liked this book, Annie is such an incredible protagonist. She is smart beautiful funny and so much more yet she is so insecure. No one had ever praised her they have always pulled her down. So being able to read her transformation throughout this book is almost inspiring. Although Patrick is a huge influence I kinda liked the independent growth she does as well. Plus her inner monologue are so flipping funny I laughed so much throughout this book.
Annie's relationships with her Sister and the Fab Four (her friendship group) is the polar opposite to Alex or her mother these are healthy relationships and it Is great to read about how close a elder sister can be to a still young teen sister. Plus I loved the mix of the friendship group. Also how they come first before the men in their lives its great. Its also great that this friends are hilarious Plus they quoted one of my favourite Grey's Anatomy lines he might be dreamy but you're the sun. So that right from the very beginning was a great sign me and this book would get on well.
Patrick is a great male character. To start with I thought he was a creep but my opinion changed very quickly. I loved how encouraging and supportive he is to help guild Annie through her healing process. Plus he is hilarious like I was doubled over when his airport outfit is being described. Honestly I think I fell in love with him myself at that moment. He is such a funny character I appreciated that within what could be quite a depressing topic.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes I would. For an easy light hearted romantic comedy look no further the lucky escape is the perfect book for you. It has a bit of everything. I must say relatistically I would totally discourage any newly single woman to fly to Australia for a 3 week all expense paid holiday with a guy you knew at 15 and bump into at the gym 15 years later. So for Annie it will ofcourse not end in a serial killer situation but it could ha. Honestly the characters are relatable and that's what I often find is missing in this genre so I really loved this book for keeping it real.
Happy to rate this book 4 stars
Thank you to netgalley, Avon publishers and the very talented author Jane Williams for the digital advanced copy of the Lucky Escape. I would totally suggest that Annie and Patrick get their very own series because I want to read about milestones they hit. Title suggestions Happy go lucky, lucky lovers, luck runs out, all we need is luck, time to get lucks. Just a few ideas. Ha
Thank you to NetGalley, Laura Jane Williams and Avon Books UK for an ARC in return for an honest review.
This is the first book by Laura Jane Williams that I have read and it’s not the normal genre I tend to go for. What a delightful read it turned out to be. The characters are loveable and so relatable. This book covers heartbreak, friendship, betrayal and love. It’s a lovely summery book. This is going to make every reader want to go on a trip to Australia. I think this will be the book of Summer 2021.
I really enjoyed this book. Great characters, especially Patrick. A good plot with lots of lovely experiences to read about and emotions to get involved with. Smashing! With thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an e-ARC of this title.
I’d like to thank Avon Books for approving me for an ARC of this audiobook..
The Lucky Escape was a fun and easy listen that dealt with a lot of issues without being morbid and depressing. I can’t imagine how anyone must feel to be jilted on what should be the happiest day of your life. Annie was clearly in shock and seemed very calm whilst she tried to process what Alexander had done. I loved her attitude of just getting on with life and channelling her energy into the gym, getting her body fit whilst her mind played catch up.
Overall I found Annie to be very likeable and relatable. She had a fun personality that had been squashed by either Alexander and her mother over the years. Once she was out from under their control she really let go and I could feel the tension easing out of her. What I liked most about Annie was her relationship with her sister Freddie and the positive effect she had on her views and opinions. They had a lovely sisterly bond considering the age gap between them.
Patrick was an absolute sweetheart. From the moment he rescued Annie from her jumper I just knew they were a great match. They had a chemistry that was undeniable and were so comfortable around each other. Perhaps the idea that Annie would take this guy, who she hasn’t seen in years, on her honeymoon is a little far fetched but hey, this is the world of fiction where anything is possible. I loved the damaged, grieving part of Patrick, it explained his live for the moment outlook on life.
I was very jealous of their holiday to Australia, it is on my list of places to visit and all the different things they did sound incredible. As the holiday progressed I could feel that sexual tension building between Annie and Patrick and there was only one way it could possibly go. The scene at the spa gave me the giggles and I could not help but laugh out loud at the hilarious antics.
Once Patrick and Annie returned home it was good to see a few hiccups along the way. When we finally meet Alexander he is everything I thought he would be; pathetic, rude and entirely wrong for Annie. It was great to see Annie standing up for herself in all aspects of her life and finally living life how she wanted not how she thought she should.
This was the perfect summer read to escape to, especially as travelling seems to be off the cards at the moment. Filled with fun, excitement and refreshing characters this is sure to bring a smile to your face.
I enjoyed this book, and finished it in one evening. The main characters are easy to like, and funny; and the other characters are all distinguishable. The descriptions of the places are brilliant. The story is fast-paced, with enough ups and downs to keep the momentum going. This is a lovely light read, perfect for the beach.
This is a great balance between romance and light hearted comedy and the blossoming relationship between the two lead characters is a thing of beauty. I really want to go on that holiday with Patrick too!
A fun and easy read. The premise of the book hooked me immediately and I did quite enjoy Annie and Patrick as characters. There were a lot of relatable moments, especially around the ideas of what constitutes being an adult and feeling left behind when everyone around you is getting married/having kids. The banter between Annie and Patrick provided for some chuckles. However, the plot lost me as it went on - particularly after they returned from Australia. I found both Annie and Patrick flip-flopping around and the growth Annie seemed to get whilst on the holiday just disappear? In the end all was well I suppose but it seemed like an unnecessary plot divergence. Overall, perfect if you're looking for something enjoyable and light-hearted.
It's Annie's wedding day but the groom, Alexander doesn't turn up. She's naturally devastated low in self esteem which isn't helped by her mother constantly doing her down. Fortunately she has a good group of friends who support her and who encourage her to take up her (almost) mother in law's offer of the honeymoon which is already paid for. She refuses at first but then after meeting someone she used to know, she decides after all to do it. What happens next is predictable but the novel is nicely written with good characterisation and lots of welcome nods to the diversity of the society we live in.
Romantic comedies are not the first genre I turn to but I enjoyed this and would read more from this author. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Annie is jilted at the church. Her would be in-laws insist she still goes on her honeymoon, a dream holiday to Australia. After meeting an old friend, Patrick, theyboth go . The inevitable happens but is it true love, what will happen when they return to normality. ?? Really enjoyable and not totally predictable, loved it.
Thank you to Net Galley & Avon books for gifting me an early release of this book, written by Laura Jane Williams.
I was already lucky enough to be gifted the audiobook version which I have listened too, enjoyed and reviewed below.
The Lucky Escape follows Annie, who’s just been left by her fiancé Alexander, of nearly 10 years - on their wedding day - by a text to the wedding planner!?
We see her navigate the next chapter of her life as a newly independent woman, with her learning who she really is and who she wants to be with, now she’s free of the constraints her relationship with Alexander unknowingly had on her. But with the help of an old friend Patrick, who she convinces to join her on what should have been her 3 week honeymoon in Australia, her eyes are opened to the possibilities her future can hold.
This is a lovely story with lots of lovely characters, I really enjoyed the narration by Carrie Hope Fletcher giving each character a different voice.
This is the only book of Williams I’ve read, but I think she has done a great job of adding different curveballs to Annie’s life, giving her options and making us - the reader, ponder over how it’s going to end; it can be boring to read some romcoms which are so cliche and obvious, this however does not fall into this category.
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book and would recommend it as a great holiday book to read or listen to!
I’m also going to look at Williams other books as if they are like The Lucky Escape, if sure I’ll enjoy them too!
Annie and Alexander have been together for 10 years, until he jilts her on their wedding day. Then unexpectedly, Annie bumps into an old friend, Patrick.
Annie ends us going on the fully paid 3-week honeymoon with Patrick and the rest is a lighthearted story, perfect for reading by the pool on holiday. Given the current climate, it’s also great to read in the garden or bath 😉
I’d give it a fun 3.5/5 stars.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. These opinions are my own.
The Lucky Escape
There’s not much to say about this other than ‘what a roller-coaster of a book’. The two main characters, Annie and Patrick, meet each other after a number of years, when each of them are hurting because of past events in their lives. This explores their relationship amid the story of a non-honeymoon in Australia, and the change this has on their personal lives. Did they end up together? You’ll have to read the book to find that out.
Get me to Australia please 😭
I ended up really enjoying this book, I have to admit it was a little slow starting for me, but once we met Patrick I couldn’t put it down! I loved coming along the journey with Annie as she slowly realised the toxic relationship she’d been in. Her disbelief that everyone except her had seen it was really relatable, and I loved her character development that comes from it.
Patrick and Annie’s chemistry was one of my favourite parts of the books, There was a lot of funny moments that made me laugh out loud during their time in Australia, and easy banter between the two. The eventual love story is done perfectly and with care, navigating all the baggage the pair carry. The book also deals with some heavier themes, which I felt was navigated really well, It was nice to have another element to the romance plot.
Once they got back from the holiday the book slowed pace a little again for me, which is why I have dropped a star. But overall I really enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend it as a summer beach read!
I have been looking for a book that would get me out of the current rut that I have found myself in, I have been reading books and not totally enjoying them, sat with my kindle reading but the percentage of the book that I am reading never seems to increase or does so at such a slow pace. That is until I have found this book, what a total joy that I have whizzed through it and loved every minute of it.
Annie finds out on her wedding day that her fiance isn't turning up to the wedding, leaving her abandoned there in her wedding dress, this understandably leaves her devastated. She decides to join a local boot-camp, she finds solace in exercise and it is here that she meets Patrick Hummingbird. Annie and Patrick had known each other since they were 14 years old and attending a drama school together.
When Annie's ex in-laws want her to go on the honeymoon that they had arranged, a drunken decision lead to an amazing holiday. I loved reading about Australia, remembering the times from my own honeymoon, however, it wasn't as lavish as this one, this honeymoon sounded amazing. This is the story of 2 people trying to leave their past behind to form a new future and you are left routing for them from the start. All the characters in the book are strong and Annie has an amazing support network. Her relationship with little sister Freddie is really special and she has the Core Four to support, even though they are all at different stages of their lives.
I am new to Laura Jane Williams but I am going to make sure that I read her others, this book is so good, if you are undecided, give it a go, I promise you will not be disappointed!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Avon books for the opportunity to read this book as an eARC in exchange for an honest review
The Lucky Escape - Laura Jane Williams
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review thanks to Avon Books UK and Netgalley.
ONE CANCELLED WEDDING
When the day finally comes for Annie to marry Alexander, the last thing she expects is to be left standing at the altar. She was so sure he was Mr Right. Now, she has no idea how she could have got it so wrong.
ONE UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER
After a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend who reminds her of who she used to be, Annie takes a vow of her own: she’ll say yes to every opportunity that comes her way from now on.
This is a feel-good, light and easy romcom to read, perfect for a summer escape. Throughout this book, Annie is reevaluating what she wanted to do with her life following being left at the altar. Annie is developed in a subtle way; she starts out afraid to take risks and as the plot develops she becomes more confident.
From the beginning I found myself wanting Annie to get the happy ending that she deserved.
Rating 4/5
This book reminded me of why I love to read! Some books are valuable because they open our eyes to experiences beyond our own, and others are valuable because they help us to see our own lives more clearly. The latter was true of this book- The Lucky Escape.
I enjoyed reading this fun romance about a woman who has spent her entire adult life making herself small to fit someone else's expectations. After her 10 year relationship ends with abandonment at the altar, Annie commences on a luxurious "honeymoon" with a kind and genuine friend, and her path to discovering how to be in partnership with someone without sacrificing her own self is the real treat of this book. So glad I got to read it!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion, which I am always happy to give. My thanks to #NetGalley, author Laura Jane Williams, and Harper Collins Publishing. #TheLuckyEscape
Delicious escapism! Reading about sunny Australia was the tonic I needed on a dull and rainy day and how heartwarming is this love story. Great characters here, that we feel we know, the overbearing mother, the best friend who seems so much more adult than us. Above all, the beautifully written Patrick, who I'm sure every reader will be a little bit in love with. I really enjoyed this book, there's not an off note in it.

Another light hearted, feel good read from Laura James Williams.
When Annie gets jilted at the altar it feels like her world as she knew it is over. But after a spontaneous decision to take an old friend with her on her honeymoon, she starts to come back to herself and remember what it feels like to be happy again.
This is a real escape of a book for the reader as well, and definitely made me miss travelling even more than I already do!
I also liked how it dealt with some deeper themes such as Annie’s troubling relationship with her mother and the self-doubt that she has held inside for so long.
Overall a sweet read that I’d recommend if you want some escapism.
3.5⭐️
This book was brilliant! I really enjoyed the relationship between Annie and Patrick and their travels to Australia. I will definitely recommend to friends.
The Lucky Escape is a great holiday romance read (if your lucky enough to get on holiday these days!)
I really enjoyed this book. Annie was left at the alter by Alexander, who quite frankly did her a favour!
Annie then goes on honeymoon after a drunken deal with an old friend Patrick. He helps remind her of who she truly is and in turn helps her recover from heartbreak. With a little bit of romance on the side!
I have to start by saying I really liked this book! The slow pace of it isn't something I usually like, but in this book it was beautifully done.
The book kinda consists of 3 parts.
- The wedding
- The "honeymoon"
- Back home
I definitely liked the two first parts the best, the ending was kinda meh. That's why it got 4 and not 5 stars from me.
I love the way the characters grow through the story, especially the main character Annie.
(I have to mention loving that she is half norwegian since I'm Norwegian... 😊)
Annie's sister Freddie reminds me a lot of my daughter who is 14, the wise young teenager who seems to know everything.. Hehe..
I fell totally in love with this book right from the start and will definitely recommend it to all who like sweet romances and light beach reads.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 stars
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
To quote the author, Laura Jane Williams, says "I hope you found it joyful and escapist". This was definitely mission accomplished. While it tackles serious women's issues it also made me laugh out loud. I really recommend it to take you away from the reality we are all experiencing.
I want to read more by this author.
You know from the title of the book and the book blurb what is going to happen. Annie is going to be left at the altar by her selfish fiance. After being totally devastated, she’s going to go on a very ritzy honeymoon to Australia, paid for by her in-laws-not-to-be. And she invites Patrick to come along. He’s a carpe diem sort of guy whom she knew when she was a teenager and hadn’t seen since then. But they meet up after she’s dumped and become friends. Since her escape is going to be lucky, this is going to be the trip that changes the whole trajectory of her life.
They embark on this wonderful trip that will make you wish you could jump in a plane and fly for almost 24 hours to spend time in Australia. Patrick is the nicest guy. He has his own sad history, but of course, he and Annie start to fall for each other.
The real question is whether or not their romance can survive the real world when they return. I enjoyed reading to find out how they would find their way to their own HEA.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
The perfect escape novel. Wonderful characters and a great story line. What more could you ask for. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
MAKTUB; it is written.
This was such a cute read of self-discovery and being true to what you preach. I thoroughly enjoyed the growth of Annie throughout the book. When she was left at the alter by Alexander, it broke my heart that she was simply getting married because it was what felt right. She believed dating someone for so long meant that marriage was the next step. I saw myself in Annie time and time again and had to remind myself that we all follow our own paths. Annie does a wonderful job of growing up and staying true to herself throughout. When her ex-in-laws told her to still go on the honeymoon to Australia, the story begins.
She meets her old high school drama friend, Patrick at the gym that she goes to and it's like a new Annie emerges. With Patrick there, she jumps back into her old habits and you can see that she was putting on a front the entire time she was with Alexander. Patrick and Annie go on a "not-date" and drink a bit too much when Annie asks Patrick to go on the honeymoon with her as friends. I'm sure you can imagine how that went.
The story reminded me a bit of The Unhoneymooners, which is a great read, but at times I felt like there wasn't enough back story to understand the depths of the characters. Patrick became a favorite because he was himself through and through. You do discover a secret Patrick has been holding that just makes you really appreciate life and your loved ones.
Overall, this was a really smooth read and I loved the character development and growth. It's a reminder to live your life to the fullest and to follow your own path. The stereotypical things we SHOULD do, don't necessarily mean they are what we NEED to do to reach ultimate happiness.
This was just a lovely lovely story that was a complete escape from our current world. I loved how Annie built herself back up again after being jilted at the altar.
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for the copy in exchange for a honest review.
This was a fun read which started with Annie's heartbreak at being jilted at the altar by her fiance Alexander. But after deciding to go on the honeymoon anyway, and all included trip to Australia courtesy of her in-laws, with an old friend Patrick she starts to heal.
The author has created a series of fun, well-rounded characters, and the plot is what you would expect from a chick-lit romance.
If you liked UnHoneymooners, this will be your book! Such loveable characters you can’t help but smile as you read! Also, anybody want to invite me on a 5 star trip to Australia?!?
Annie is about to go into her wedding when the wedding planner gets a text to say that fiance, Alexander, won't be coming. As she comes to terms with her whole life turning upside down, she is encouraged to go on her honeymoon. And so her adventure begins.
I really loved this story. Annie, her family and friends were well described and believable. I knew how it would end but the journey was the story.
Just right for a holiday read or for curling up by the fire
It's usually a midlife which causes us to take a step back and re-evaluate our life but not so for Annie after being left standing at the altar (from recollection I don't think she got that far). A chance meeting of a friend from her past and the offer of a fully paid honeymoon sans groom brings a sea change to her life. Quite an entertaining read and we get to experience the high life in Australia. The relationship Annie has with her mother was well written and the mother's reaction to events worthy of Hyacinth Bucket. However, there was not a great deal of novelty in the tale so I shall have to knock a star off. For those living a middling existence and seeking inspiration for a change, it could be a winner.
Soooo good! This is a wonderful, not coming of age, but coming into oneself story! A quick read, perfect for the beach or a vacay! What do you do when your perfect life gets up ended? Go on your honeymoon, with an old friend! Such a fresh story with great rich characters!
This was a new author for me, and I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't my favorite book ever, but I really enjoyed it overall.
What a charming read! This story is perfectly paired with a mojito and a sunny day. I felt transported to the beaches of Australia while reading this. The main character is witty and real. Fans of Sophia Kinsella and Christina Lauren would totally enjoy this story. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sending an e-ARC.
A really nice book with great characters that were really well-written. I really enjoyed the story and it unfolded beautifully. Highly recommended.
THE LUCKY ESCAPE - LAURA JANE WILLIAMS
PUBLISHED BY - AVON BOOKS UK
PUB DATE 10TH JUNE
PLOT - Annie is left standing at the altar , she is devastated and doesn't know why!
She later randomly meets Patrick, her old friend from drama camp and they instantly reconnect.
Annie's ex MIL insists that she goes on the all inclusive honeymoon to Australia and take someone along. Annie impulsively asks Patrick!
Will it be a Lucky Escape for both of them?? Can Annie get her life sorted??
MY THOUGHTS -
The writing is very good. It is not very heavy , an easy read and via Annie it emphasizes on how one gets accustomed in one's life that you don't question it and are settling for less than what you actually deserve.
What I liked about this book is that it's not only about the vacation or the lucky escape but also when Annie is back to her day to day life and has to get her bearings and confront some truths making it more realistic!
The chemistry between Annie and Patrick is super!! He is gentle, funny and full of life and is definitely one of my book BF.
For me the first 3rd of the book was quite slow then it picked up for me.
Thank you Netgalley and Avon books for this arc in exchange of my honest opinion.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books Uk for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Lucky Escape is the ultimate rom-com read with some self-discovery. Going in, I thought it was going to be like The Unhoneymooners (which I liked but didn’t love) but I got more Beach Read vibes.
After being stood up at the altar by her university sweetheart, Annie is left questioning everything in her life. One unexpected encounter with her old friend Patrick from drama camp leads to the ultimate Australian honeymoon trip.
I greatly admire the relationship not only between Annie and her little sister Freddie, but between Annie and all her friends. The juxtaposition between her healthy relationships and her unhealthy relationships (especially with her mother and Alexander) was done so well. I recognize some aspects about the character Annie were a bit wishy-washy; however, her growth is praiseworthy and I related to her a great deal. Although I think there has to be a definite friendship in order to go from friends to lovers, the romance between Annie and Patrick dragged out a little too long and I just expected more.
The references were immaculate and I could really not put this down! I would highly recommend this fun and cute story!
Lighthearted, fun read. A little predictable but sometimes that's what you want from a book!
Would be a great book to read on holiday.
If you enjoyed The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, this book is for you!
Annie is stood up at the altar and her husband to be ghosts her. Then, she encounters Patrick, a man from camp when they were teens.
As she has a honeymoon paid by her in-laws, her mother-in-law encourages her to still go to this luxury 3 weeks vacation to Australia. She decides to go with Patrick.
One third is before the trip, one third is the trip and last third is the return.
I did not think I would enjoy it this much but I needed something light and it exceeded my expectations!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for a free copy of this E-arc in exchange for my honest review.
LOVED this adorable chick lit book! Loved the setting, loved the characters, and loved the storyline. Perfect to read at the beach, by the pool. anywhere! My first book by Laura Jana Williams, but will definitely not be my last.
Thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
“The Lucky Escape” was a perfect depiction of a modern-day romance and real-life everyday struggles. Annie is left at the altar by her long-time boyfriend, and in an attempt at recovering from heartbreak joins a workout class. During her workout class, she meets Patrick! Determined to get back to the Annie she used to be, she decides to take a vow that she’ll say yes to every opportunity that presents itself. Using the spare ticket for her honeymoon Patrick sets off with Annie on an all-expense-paid honeymoon vacation in Australia. When they return, they must face expectations and judgments of the “real world”.
Laura Williams writing is spectacular in this novel. It is kept light and easy to read and follow. It is writing from Annie’s point of view as a series of events from the time she is left at the altar through her journey back to herself.
I was rooting for Annie the entire time! She’s an easy character to love, she’s sweet and smart and doesn’t know her worth. I related so much to Annie and her relationship with her mother, they were consistently at odds with each other. Her mother questioned every step Annie took and was always thinking about what others would say (how frustrating!). Patrick was by far my favorite character! He was so gentle, forgiving, tender, and of course handsome!
The book really questions your thoughts on rebound dating! Annie definitely jumped directly into another relationship as soon as her thoughts cleared from being left at the altar. It made me think about my views on rebound dating. On one hand, I think it can be detrimental to jump from heartbreak into another relationship, it can prevent self-healing and lead to using a person as a numbing device – which is not fair to both parties. But on another hand, if done right, a rebound relationship could also be healing in a way as well. Through Patrick, Annie was able to return to her true personality and learn to no be defined by her significant other. Patrick allowed her to be herself, he actually pushed her to be bold and relax. This rebound was very beneficial for both Annie and Patrick
Overall, I would rate this book 4 stars.
Beautiful work by Laura Jane Williams!
What a joy this book was! I haven’t read anything by Laura Jane Williams before and was totally charmed by both the storyline and the writing.
Annie’s world comes crashing down around her and we really feel her emotions - shock, pain, wallowing in self-pity, pulling herself together and then taking a totally unexpected direction.
The ‘escape’ is manifold and the story of what Annie does next is fabulous. There’s a trip abroad, a man, a return to reality, doubt and ultimately a very satisfying ending.
Patrick, Adzo, Freddie, the Core Four are all very real. The one character I didn’t get to grips with was Annie’s fiancé - I can’t even remember his name - but I think really that’s the point - what starts off one way ends up with Annie (and the reader) realising that he wasn’t significant at all. Annie’s self-development is what is significant!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to escape - even if it is just into the pages of a book!
It should have been the happiest day of Annie’s life .When her feckless fiancé Alexander, backs out of the wedding via text and flees the country, Annie is lost. Her entire future has disintegrated. Weeks after being jilted, she signs up to a boot camp and is reunited with Patrick, a friend from her teenage years. Catching up with Patrick feels like no time has past and reminds her of who she was before she felt she had to fit in and please everyone. On a whim after a drinking and crazy golf marathon, she decides to go on her honeymoon with Patrick who is coping with his own heartbreak. But what happens when you go on your honeymoon with another man?
I enjoyed this book. It’s lighthearted and funny. It’s one of those books where you can see how it’s all going to play out but that doesn’t detract from your enjoyment at all. I was happy to be along for the ride whilst Annie picks herself up, dusts herself off and starts afresh. The chapters in Australia were pure escapism and I loved reading about Annie’s transformation whilst she travelled with Patrick. The pace and feel of the book definitely changed once they return back from the trip and I felt impatient for the end.
All in all it’s a perfect upbeat beach read and I’d recommend to all fans of the romance genre.
Thank you to the author, Netgalley and Avon books for the opportunity to read the book in exchange for an honest review.
A great chic lit book that would be perfect as a holiday read.
There’s nothing overly “different” about this book, starting in the same way as many others in the genre with a jilted bride and then progressing with friends falling in love on an amazing holiday. However it really didn’t matter that it had a recognisable plot, loads of chick lit have quite interchangeable plots. The important thing was that it was an enjoyable read and a nice bit of escapism. I would definitely recommend for some light hearted rom com.
Anne was left at the altar. When she reunites with an old friend from camp at a bootcamp class. Taken by his outlook on life, she reunites with his friendship. With her ex is no where to be found his parents tell Annie to take the non-refundable vacation to Australia as an apology for their son's misgivings. And who does she take with her? Not her best friend, or a college friend from her core-four, but Patrick, the optimist widower, who Annie cannot get enough of. But living in the swanky hotels and fancy tours Patrick and Annie catch feelings, almost like the bachelor! But can their dreamy vacation affair last in the real world? Or will Annie's mother, ex, and job get in the way?
At first I thought this story was a bit cliched jilted bride runs into an old friend and goes on vacation and bam LOVE. But as this went along I couldn't put it down and loved that it went past the vacation and the struggles of coming back to the real life problems. It definitely gave me wanderlust vibes. I am also in the same boat as Annie in the respect of finding a new place to live and maybe taking a little more control of my life and not letting so many people's opinions get in the way. Overall it was a cute and enjoyable read! 4 stars.
After adoring The Love Square, and also really loving Our Stop, I was so looking forward to The Lucky Escape, I was sold from the premise alone.
Ah this was such a heartwarming and fun read! I just really love Laura’s writing, it’s so easy to get into and it just flows so well, it’s cosy, fun and always guaranteed to make me a bit emotional at times too, so the perfect trio of boxes ticked for a rom com for me.
Same here as with the last 2 books is that I really love the main characters, the chemistry and just seeing their interactions play out was so enjoyable. Filled with laughs, heartwarming moments and a nice sprinkling of sauce too.
Annie is ready to marry Alexander but he's a no-show at the wedding. Annie is naturally upset and joins a bootcamp club to let off some steam. She runs into an old friend Patrick with whom she connects. Annie decides to take Patrick on the honeymoon that is already paid for, so why not?
I really really loved this book. It truly was the perfect escape.
I enjoyed the character development - in particular Annie’s best friend and her little sister. I also loved how kind and thoughtful Patrick was.
I enjoyed reading how Annie thought so much more of herself and really realised it can take just one person to set you on the right path
Great Summer read
Actually got this on audio as well as the book version. A most definitely five star from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A fun and easy read. The premise of the book hooked me immediately and I enjoyed Annie and Patrick as characters. There were a lot of relatable moments, especially around the ideas of what constitutes being an adult and feeling left behind when everyone around you is getting married and having kids. The banter between Annie and Patrick provided for some chuckles. I found both Annie and Patrick flip-flopping around and the growth Annie seemed to get whilst on the holiday just disappear. Overall, perfect if you're looking for something enjoyable and light-hearted. Lol moment in the sauna!
Annie was raised to be a good, submissive woman who didn't advocate for herself nor ruffled feathers. So imagine when you've spent your life doing the "right" thing that being left at the altar is the most shocking and traumatizing thing to happen in your life. While Annie is grieving the loss of her marriage and future life, she runs into her old friend Patrick. Coincidently, Patrick encourages Annie to be more self-sufficient, and to take risks that starts with taking him to Australia on her honeymoon. Doesn't hurt that Patrick isn't the gangly teens she once new and is certifiably HOT and always knows when to say the right thing.
While in this perfectly romantic bubble, Annie begins to take chances and to follow her own gut, which includes giving into her attraction to Patrick. Annie and Patrick quickly realize that it's easy to be brave and take risks from a half a world away, but re-entering their old lives and trying to fit each other into them proves to be more difficult than expected.
A book filled with growth, discovery, and a lucky escape.
***
I think I'm officially a Laura Jane Williams fan?!?!?! Like any sound romcom fan, I was obviously high off of Our Stop but was left utterly disappointed after The Love Square. The Lucky Escape was a satiable rebound that left me satisfied.
What I love about Annie is the growth in character. Nobody can blame how submissive her character was in the beginning as it was a result of how she was raised. Patrick was just the right guy to encourage her to be her own woman and not to hold back.
Patrick is basically any woman's ideal man. This cutie definitely broke the idea of "nice guys finish last". I really appreciated his insights to life, and grief, without the loss of his wife completely defining him. He was absolutely the right match for Annie to let her grow without stifling her.
TBH the book is just so highly relevant to modern culture. There were several Glennon Doyle references either by name, or ideas Glennon writes about which adds to the authenticity of the underlying plots of growth. Needless to say, this book was so much more than two characters simply falling in love.
Perfect summer read with the hot, Australian setting and a forget-all-your troubles FREE vacation. Spicy chemistry with a new friend, random adventures and a message that inspires you to put yourself first. What more do you need!
A light hearted easy read. Sometimes things don't work out the way we think they are going too, but everything happens for a reason and this story shows that. I enjoyed the main characters relationship and would recommend this book if your looking for a rom com story whilst on the beach.
3.5 stars
This is a friends to lovers romances. It is from the perspective of Annie, who happens to reconnect with an old friend, Patrick, from Drama camp after years apart. Annie invites Patrick on a free trip with her after the person she was going to go with literally left her at the altar with no explanation. As their friendship is renewed and begins to grow stronger, it slowly begins to develop into something more, with some hilarious results!
This book is definitely more of a serious romance. Both characters are dealing with heartbreak, where they reveal to each other their pain, experience new adventures together and learn more about themselves. The setting in Australia was fun and atmospheric. The writing was good, it was a little jumpy at times. I enjoyed the humor when it was there, the couple's message was hilarious! I did have some problems with the main characters. Annie was naïve and childish for a woman in her thirties. There was a lag in the story about ⅔ of the way through and it took me a bit to get through it. I had a hard time getting motivated to pick it back up again, but once I did I flew the rest of the way through. Overall, I liked this story. It showed two people really helping each other grow in several ways and to also have fun and enjoy life.
Trigger warnings: death of a spouse.
I received this advanced ebook, via Netgalley. This review is my own honest opinion.
As soon as I heard that Laura Jane Williams was coming out with a new book I knew I had to read it because I've loved her previous books One Stop and The Love Square. The Lucky Escape did not let me down and I fully enjoyed this story and the characters!
Annie was such an amazing character and I loved watching her character develop throughout the book. Her relationship with her younger sister was so sweet and I absolutely loved Frankie! Patrick is also such an adorable character and I liked learning more of his story as the book went on.
This is definitely the perfect summer read. The Lucky Escape is a feel good, light-hearted rom-com which for a good percentage of the book transports you to Australia! Williams descriptions left a vivid picture of the sunny continent and had me desperate to visit!
Overall an amazing book by the wonderful Laura Jane Williams! I cannot wait to see what she writes next!
Thank you so much to Avon books for this copy of The Lucky Escape in exchange for a honest review. Ad-Gifted
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Annie and Alexander were meant to be in love and getting married, at least that’s what or Annie thought. After all, they’d been together most of their adult lives, so why not take the next step. But on the day, Annie’s gobsmacked when he doesn't show.
Now, she doesn’t know what to do next, meant to going to Australia for her honeymoon, obviously she can’t go alone. After staying in bed for days, debating whether to go back to work or not, meshing colleagues asking questions. Is stating in bed for 3 weeks an option?
An old friend, Patrick, tells her to go on her honeymoon. A shame to waste a trip to Australia. Maybe he can go with her too.
Will the trip be the opportunity for her to get her self-esteem back? Will things change on this trip between them?
There are some complicated relationships in "The Lucky Escape", not least that of Annie and her mother. In fact Annie gets on better with her future mother-in-law, so does this explain why such an extravagant honeymoon has been organised? This is never explained although it is mentioned that Annie's future in-laws are not that well off - must be a relative term. Is Patrick too good to be true? He's certainly very different to fiance Alexander. Discover what happens on the non-honeymoon and afterwards. This is a very readable holiday romance.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
I was so excited to receive my FIRST EVER arc this month. Just in time for beach reading season, The Lucky Escape is set to be released on June 10!
I loved this little story of new beginnings and finding love and meaning in your life. After Annie is left at the altar by her fiance, she begins to rethink all of the choices she’s made to get her there. She’s always tried to make the “right” choices - the responsible choices - and lived her life trying to make those around her comfortable. Watching her begin to stand up for herself was so fun.
Some things I loved about this book:
💖 the romance - From the moment Patrick was introduced, I was ready for the two to be madly in love!
💖 theatre kids - Annie and Patrick met at a summer theatre camp ages ago. I’m a theatre kid (adult), and even the mere mention of anything theatrical will make me instantly like anyone. I would joyfully read a prequel about the camp!
💖 fabulous vacation - Annie’s trip to Australia sounded heavenly. I cannot wait until the end of the pandemic times and the return of some fun vacations for me! If you like living vicariously through characters, you’re going to love the trip!
💖 the silly moments - I was dyyyying during the sauna scene! I missed the levity during the last bit of the book, although I appreciated the character arc.
Exactly what it says in the title, a lucky escape who's romantic life takes a bitter twist, without spoiling it, its heartbreaking, fun, entertaining and romantic. A brilliant summer read for when the sun comes out.
Good. This book had me gripped from the very first page so much that it only took me an afternoon to read it as I wanted to know how Annie's journey turned out. Lovely romantic story which may make you cry in places.
I absolutely loved this book, such a fun read. I could not put this book down and read it over one weekend. I read The Love Square by Laura Jane Williams last year and quickly fell for her writing style so I was excited to read another book by the author. The writing in this one was just as good and captured my attention straight away, and I felt had an even better cast of characters. I loved the protagonist Annie and was rooting for her throughout the book. Patrick was also the perfect love interest and Annie’s friend and sister were excellent additions to the story.
The book was the perfect balance between a fun summer read while dealing with some more serious topics, including grief and toxic relationships. I really enjoyed reading Annie’s journey as she discovered what she really wanted in life. Also, the romance was so good! I was so invested in Annie and Patrick’s relationship.
Overall, this was such an enjoyable read that I’d highly recommend! I think it’s being released at the perfect time of year, too. The Australian setting was dreamy and the descriptions in the honeymoon scenes felt like total escapism. Another fabulous book from Laura Jane Williams.
A feel-good, lighthearted romantic comedy that immediately puts you in a holiday mood. Jilted bride Annie shares her prepaid honeymoon in a luxury resort with almost forgotten childhood friend Patrick. They both use this chance to eventually leave their rather unlucky pasts behind.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher Avon for letting me read an ARC
Great read. Full of warmth and self discovery with a witty joyful vibe. Really enjoyable and relatable. A good illustration of life after apparent ruin. Some fantastic travel narrative thrown in for good measure. I found reading this necessary escapism in book form.
Thank you Netgalley
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane William was the perfect vacation read. After being left at the alter by her college sweetheart, Annie decides to go on her honeymoon alone. Naturally, an unexpected romance ensues. The Lucky Escape is the perfect rom-com, packed with spunky Judy Greer reminiscent best friends, dashing leads, and the tropics.
After being stuck home in quarantine lockdown, this read quenches the thirst of wanderlust. Set in London and Australia, this enjoyable rom com is slow to get started, opening on a jilting. Because it happens so early, its hard to feel the full force of it Sex and City movie style, but makes for a good rock bottom to start with. But once it gets going and into the trip to Australia, the slow burn romance of friends to lovers is super satisfying. The male lead in particular is really well done – he has a “manic dream girl” energy that’s refreshing for a male instead of the stereotypical female lead. Well worth getting stuck into, look forward to Laura Jane Williams’ next read.
This book was a great way to begin the warmer summer months, with one part escapism, and two parts romantic tension. In the most unfortunate of ways, Annie gets dumped by her fiancé Alexander on her wedding day. Fortunately, a wonderful (ex?) mother-in-law encourages Annie to take her honeymoon trip to Australia as a way to find herself, or just get over Alexander. What could make this trip better? Throw in a cute acquaintance with a laissez-faire attitude from middle-school camp, and you have the makings of a fun, “will they”/“won’t they” friends to lovers romance. The trip itself was my favorite part of the book. Annie does a little soul seeking in the chapters after, which although might have been necessary for character growth, were more for story conclusion than reading enjoyment. I loved Patrick as a character; he was fresh snd honest and we need more male protagonists like this as potential love interests. I would definitely read another book by Laura Jane Williams. Thank you to Avon and Net Galley for my free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Chick-lit at its finest. I really enjoyed this heart warming novel from Laura Jane Williams (also loved Our Stop). Funny and sweet with a happy ending! Thank you for the ARC. 4 stars.
I have been a fan of Laura Jane Williams, the woman, for a long time through her Instagram account and I am equally a fan of Laura Jane Williams, the author, since her debut fiction novel. I also followed her previous non fiction work too. She has really cemented her place as one of my favourite female writers of feel-good fiction with each novel, and I actually think The Lucky Escape is her best yet.
Written during a global pandemic (no small feat, trying to have an imagination while stuck inside four walls 24 hours a day), this is escapist fiction at its very best. It had me reminiscing about my own trip to Australia pre-pandemic, as well as drinks or brunch with friends and talking to strangers. I am so glad there were no mentions of the pandemic in this. It filled me with so much joy to read Annie’s story and I flew through it in just a couple of sittings.
An absolute pleasure to read. I’ll never stop recommending Laura for people who want a pick-me-up and a perfect romance with smart, independent women at its core. LOVE!
One Cancelled Wedding – Annie is left jilted on her wedding day. She was so sure Alexander was Mr. Right, but now all she can think about is how wrong she was.
One Unexpected Encounter – When a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend, reminds Annie of who she used to be, she makes a vow to herself. To say yes to every opportunity that comes her way!
One Spare Ticket for the Honeymoon – Could a spontaneous trip be the answer? Annie’s about to find out when she embarks on her honeymoon…with a man who isn’t her husband.
After enjoying ‘Our Stop’ I requested this title from NetGalley in the hopes of reading light-hearted story by Williams, but what I got was so much more.
This book is laugh out loud funny! There was more than one occasion where my partner asked me what was happening, and I tried to read it aloud through tears of hilarity.
To be completely honest, I wasn’t enthralled by Annie. She was an ok protagonist, but I found her neither here nor there. However, Patrick was absolutely stand out! His one-liners and comical scenarios had me reading late into the night and trying to giggle quietly into the covers. His character brought the best side of Annie out, and her personality shone brightest during their banter.
As a huge travel lover, the honeymoon elements of this book left me craving a trip of my own. Everything from the airport and flight to the adventures encountered along the way made me long to grab my passport and discover somewhere new! This is what I have missed most during the pandemic, so to be able to “travel” through books has been a fantastic substitute.
All in all, this was a great read. Perfect for some much needed and easy going escapism! Highly recommend.
3.75 stars rounded up to 4
The Lucky Escape was more cute than I had thought. Annie and Patrick were so adorable with each other and their relationship made me squeal, at certain points. The premise of the story, though a little bit cliched, was done pretty well. My only problem is that things moved a little too fast. The honeymoon part of this book was a lot shorter than I had thought and I wished we could have gotten more of that and more of Annie enjoying herself in Australia. The part that came after that, the final act of the story, felt a tad bit boring to me, but overall, it was rather lovely to read and I enjoyed reading about Annie standing up for herself.
All in all, The Lucky Escape is a classic chick-lit romance and makes for a pretty light hearted read.
While this seems like an easy beach read initially, there was more depth to it. I liked the writing style a lot. The story was easy to read and moved quickly. I loved reading the section that took place during the trip to Australia. The author did an excellent job crafting this portion of the story, and it made me miss traveling! I greatly appreciated the character development and the way Annie started with questioning and self doubt. but began to live life for herself rather than others. .I wasn't a huge fan of the way this book, but I’d still recommend to anyone looking for a cute, quick read. I enjoyed it!
The story begins with the heartbreaking moment when the future groom fails to show up at church, leaving his fiance Annie without any explanation. Even when her perfect world has been destroyed in a split second, Annie goes on her honeymoon. Patrick, her old friend, will be her companion.
Why did her fiance leave her at the altar? Does she really have a perfect life? What will happen on the trip to Australia? You need to find out and get to know Patrick!
Written in a funny tone, light reading. I enjoyed the story - mainly the second part of the book. The characters are pretty good, bringing a charming, friendly atmosphere. The story is written from Annie's perspective, and I like this type of narrative. The ending was a bit squeezed - too much in a too short time for a cumulative moment of the entire book.
Highly recommend - if you are looking for some brightly and funny written story' The Lucky Escape is definitely for you.
Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Collins, for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Annie’s life is turned upside down when she is jilted on her wedding day. Broken and confused she starts to re-evaluate her life and her life with Alexander. She bumps into an old friend Patrick he’s very easy going and fun to hang out with. Alexander’s mother insists that Annie still go on her honeymoon to Australia. On a whim the new Annie decides to say Yes and her and Patrick go together as friends. I loved reading about the trip to Australia it made me yearn to go there. There were also some hilarious laugh out loud moments. A trip away from real life is a wonderful way to escape but returning home, seeing Alexander again and the reality and subsequent re-evaluating of life is a different matter.
I found this book to be an easy, enjoyable read.
I haven't read anything by this author, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised! This book was such a cute, vacation read. I loved the premise. It reminded me a lot of Christina Lauren's The Unhoneymooners, just with a friends to lovers spin rather than enemies to lovers. I think Williams does an amazing job of showing growth in her characters. We do not finish the book with the same Annie that we started with and you can really see how throughout the story. This book also really explores how grief can come and go, and how there is no right way to move on. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend as a cute beach read for the summer!
The book's premise hooked me in. Jilted on your wedding day but still taking the honeymoon sounds great.
The book starts with Annie having arrived at her wedding, ready to walk down the aisle, only to be told the groom, Alexander, won't be coming. Devastated, Annie struggles to understand what happened. Burying herself in fitness, she runs into an old friend, Patrick, After a few beers, and the blessing of the grooms' mother, Annie and Patrick head off for a non-honeymoon together in Australia.
I enjoyed the Lucky Escape and the author gave me enough information about Alexander for me to dislike him, but not question why Annie was with him. The non-honeymoon in Australia was paced just right for me, with Patrick and Annie becoming friends and having wonderful experiences together. first. The ending was a little unfocus or rushed. A lot happens in a very short period of time. Overall, this is a great story and a fun read.
Thank you, NetGalley for the arc. This is my honest review.
Can someone please book me on this trip to Australia?!?
This book can only be described as the perfect summer read and for those of us who just aren't ready to attempt travel yet, it provides the perfect escape.
The story begins at the wedding of Annie and Alexander. As Annie arrives at the church, her poor wedding planner has to tell her that Alexander has texted her to say he won't be coming. Annie is absolutely devastated. In order to try get over it all, Annie joins bootcamp, where she meets an old friend, Patrick.
Alexanders parents manage to persuade Annie to go on her honeymoon, but she doesn't choose one of her best friends, she ends up on her honeymoon with Patrick.
Now, yes, we all know where the story is going. Is it cheesy? Of course it is. Do I care? Not one jot!! There is nothing better than chilling out with a classic rom-com and for me Laura Jane Williams writes some great characters.
Definitely one to read over the summer!!
Thank you to Netgalley, Laura Jane Williams and Harper Collins for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book is due to be published on 10 June 2021.
I am reading slowly, as it is not my native language, but so far I am enjoying the story, it is light and fun.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams was a cute and engaging romantic book. This would make a great beach read! I did not want to put it down.
I'm definitely familiar with the authors works but this is the first I've read for myself and I really enjoyed it. It was easy to read, wonderfully written, gripping and captivating. Would definitely recommend.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were likeable and the story had me hooked. I enjoyed seeing the friendship develop between them in Australia, and the holiday itself sounded dreamy! I hadn’t read any of Williams’ books before and will now be searching for more so I guess that says it all! Would definitely recommend.
Thank you to the publisher Avon Books UK and NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions are exclusively my own.

ONE SPARE TICKET FOR THE HONEYMOON
Could a spontaneous trip with Patrick be the way to mend Annie’s heart? She’s about to find out as she embarks on her honeymoon – with a man who’s not her husband…
My Thoughts - https://pjsandbooks.wordpress.com/2021/05/18/the-lucky-escape/
This book is the perfect Summer read and I would highly recommend this to be added to your packing list. The eARC had some formatting issues but I am sure this will be sorted before publication day and did not spoil my overall enjoyability. This book tells the story of Annie who is told by the wedding planner as she arrives at her wedding that her future husband has text and will not be marrying her! She is then encouraged by her would be in-laws to still go on her Australian honeymoon. Annie finally decides to go and her company a man she knew from drama camp when she was a teenager! The story had a commonly used romantic novel formula but this was completed about three-quarters through the novel and then Annie had some more choices to make. I definitely was rooting for Annie initially but then I was team Patrick 'Pongy Paddy' Hummingbird.
I give this Summer read:
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍
Overall, I enjoyed this read and I definitely recommend this book as your holiday book for 2021.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams is due for release June 2021.
Annie’s worst nightmare comes true when she shows up to the church for her wedding – finally – only to be told by the wedding planner that her soon-to-be-husband has called it off and is not coming.
Without a word from him, Annie does her best to work through her emotions. With some prodding from her no-longer-in-laws, she decides to go on their all-expense-paid honeymoon trip to Australia for three weeks, and decides to bring a new old friend with her.
After running into him by accident, Annie finds herself reminiscing with Patrick about their fun days as kids in theater camp. Both in need of an escape, and desperate for the easy conversation they both seem to have with one another, they escape to Australia together.
What happens on this honeymoon is both expected and unexpected. Truths come out, Annie may or may not hear from her now-ex, Alexander, and she might be growing closer and closer to someone she had never expected to grow close to.
This book is a rollercoaster of emotions, but is ultimately a fantastic escapist rom-com that will likely bring a smile to your face.
I really enjoyed this book, it’s perfect easy read for a sunny day in the garden. The premise is a classic rom-com and I liked that Patrick helped Annie to work out how to find her confidence and move on herself, and she helped him too, rather than just her being ‘rescued’.
I was drawn in and read it quickly, but I’m hesitant to rate it higher as despite my enjoyment of it, I know it won’t stay with me as it’s very similar to other books of this genre.
I was looking for a book to escape into and the sunny cover for The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams caught my eye and grabbed my attention and let me tell you, the book inside is just as bright and uplifting as the cover. This book was proper feel-good fiction with real heart to it. Yes it made me smile throughout but it also made me think, and I do enjoy a book that does both these things. It was the perfect book to escape into.
In The Lucky Escape, we meet Annie on the morning of her wedding to Alexander. If there’s one thing Annie is certain of, it’s that her future is with this guy. So when he jilts her on her wedding day, she is at a complete loss. When her friends and her now ex mother-in-law persuade her to go on her honeymoon anyway, Annie ends up giving her spare ticket to a guy she has literally only just met again for the first time in a long time – Patrick Hummingbird. Going on honeymoon with a man you barely remember – it could be the beginning to a thriller but thankfully here it is not. Instead this is a warm and wonderful tale of self-discovery and new beginnings.
My absolute favourite part of this book was the honeymoon. I loved travelling to Australia through the author’s words. There was great description and I was able to see every part of the honeymoon play out in front of me as the author paints a lovely, vivid picture of every scene. However, the best bit of the honeymoon, for me, was by far the chemistry between Annie and Patrick which leapt off the page. I loved the two of them. They made me smile and laugh-out-loud so many times and honestly, whether they were feeling the love or not, I certainly was. I was rooting for them all the way and really enjoyed getting to know both of them.
Annie is the character we need. She is kind and caring and has everything going for her but as this is now a world where everyone has to voice their own opinions, however unwelcome, and are happy to judge people without having a clue about them, Annie has a whole bag of self-esteem issues to deal with. She is insecure, and let’s face it, being jilted at the altar doesn’t really help her there.
I felt for Annie throughout. She tries to put a brave face on things but I seriously wanted her to know it was ok to not be ok. Patrick helps her there, and I loved him for it. I get why some people might find Annie quite frustrating but I actually found her so easy to relate to. She knows she has her issues and she tries to work through them. Naturally, she has setbacks but no matter how much she may not have wanted to, she always got back up and I really warmed to her character so easily.
Truthfully there so was so much I loved about this book. From Annie’s friends and sister, to Patrick’s own personal story, to the positive messages this book delivers about living in the moment and taking time to heal, Laura Jane Williams writes perceptively and with a warmth and humour that really had me hooked. The Lucky Escape is insightful and uplifting – the perfect book to read this summer.

“… she said that life’s highs and life’s lows are so entwined, the happiness and sorrow is so interconnected, that it’s impossible to ever just be totally happy or totally sad. It’s good and bad, light and dark. We want there to be a right thing, an ultimate happiness, a sort of destination where we’ve escaped all the crappy things in life. Like passing a test. But that’s not living. We can’t outrun crappy, awful, horrible stuff. So the job of our lives is to let it exist alongside the good stuff, making the good stuff so much sweeter. Does that make sense?”
oh my I absolutely loved this book! 😍
This was such a fun, lovely uplifting book. Although it was so predictable it didn’t matter because you just fall in love with the characters and their back stories🙈
Anne tries to recover from the worst thing to happen to her…being jilted at the alter 😭after her wedding day she decides to make a promise to herself…be kind…say yes to every opportunity, throw caution to the wind and commit to her own happiness. This just so happens to be…attending her own honeymoon…with a man that’s not her husband but an old friend from drama camp where she attended as a teen🙈
This covers topics of grief and low self esteem.
This is such a perfect summer read and I highly recommend 🌞 this book finally got me out my reading slump🥰
Such an uplifting read…well done to @laurajaneautor! You smashed this ✨💛
Please make sure to grab a copy! Out 10 June 2021🥂💛
Thank you to the author and to netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
@netgalley
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
After reading Our Stop and The Love Square, I'd have to say, this is now my favourite Laura Jane Williams' novel. I think it was the main characters, and how well they got along, and their banter, that really sealed it for me.
The plot wasn't cheesy, moved at a decent pace and kept my attention.
Probably a novel I won't forget for a while.
Overall, this book was okay. It's a light tale of self-discovery and, although it's not exactly my cup of tea, I'd recommend it to those wanting a fun, quick read.
This was such a cute, light hearted read! The book was all about self discovery and the books captures the main characters growth that she goes through. I would definitely recommend this to other!
Absolutely adored this book and Patrick is now my new book husband. I've read it in such a short time, coudlnt put it down. Great characters and thrilling story of new starts and living in a moment
4 stars
There are so many things that I love about The Lucky Escape. It's set in England, there's travel, there's romance, and best of all, there's a woman discovering her self-worth. However, through no fault of Williams, reading The Lucky Escape made me realize that I am not the biggest fan of the falling in love on vacation trope.
It is truly nothing against Williams' writing as she does a wonderful job of building both the Annie/Patrick relationship and Annie's individual journey. I have just found that in every book where a newly formed couple returns to the reality of real life, the inevitable conflict that arises just doesn't work me. Williams actually does a better job than most of maneuvering around any pitfalls, but there were still a few moments of miscommunication that rubbed me the wrong way.
Although I may not pick another vacation romance for a while, Williams' winning combination of wit and heart will certainly keep me coming back for more! Incredibly excited to see what she comes up with next!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon for an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review!
To start off this review, I LOVED this book! It checks all the boxes to be a 5 star book for me. Bonus pointd for the Greys Anatomy reference! Comedy? Check. Characters you love? Check. I could not put this book down, I would have read it in one sitting if it weren’t for life getting in the way of doing that!
I loved the chemistry between Patrick and Annie and the fact that no character was ‘perfect’ and that they all had their flaws. The plot wasn’t all smooth sailing and happy which was great to see because it really mirrored the fact that life isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. It was nice to read something realistic in terms of life doesn’t always go the way you want or expect it to.
This book follows a theme of love and loss and learning to be yourself again. The advernture was exciting too, and it felt like I was there with the characters. I really enjoyed reading all the places the characters went to and the fact the book wasn’t set in one place but there was lots of different locations.
There was a good amount of funny in the book and I really just want to give Annie a big hug. The overall vibe of the book makes it a perfect summer read. I also likee the fact that it is not a ‘go, fall in love, come home and happily ever after ‘ book and that more happens after the return and that it’s not all smooth sailing, giving the book more depth, as well as characters.
Definitely a 5 star read for me and I would love to read more from this author!
Entertaining book, which gets you engrossed to find out what is going to happen next. From falling in love to getting stood up at the alter. Then the what was going to be new mother in law had paid for a honeymoon to remember advised her to still go and take someone in place of her son. Annie takes an old student friend with her, they become lovers. However, he is still coming to terms with losing his wife who had passed away. When Annie comes back she is offered promotion in another Country, she goes to check it out, but her heart is wanting to be with Patrick her old student friend.
When Annie is jilted at the altar she is she’ll shocked and thought her life was over. While recovering she runs into an old friend from camp, Patrick.
Annie still goes on the honeymoon and Patrick begs to come with as a friend.
This was a cute book with great chemistry and wonderful character development.
Thank you @netgalley and @avonbooksuk and @laurajaneauthor for the advanced copy of the lucky escape.
Annie is ditched at the altar on her wedding day and is now rebuilding herself back up.
Whilst exercising she meets up with Patrick. Someone from her past and invites him to join her in Australia.
One cancelled wedding, one unexpected encounter and one spare ticket for honeymoon.
Annie has the opportunity to rebuild her life and be able to do things for herself. Along the way, there are decisions to be made and learning to do things that make her happy.
I really enjoyed the book and it was nice easy light hearted read.
The Lucky Escape is a 3.5⭐️ rounded up to 4⭐️
Annie Wiig is nearly 30 and finds herself unexpectedly single. The lovely (not) Alexander has abandoned her and left her with no explanation. A chance meeting with an old friend helps her get over Alexander and start to turn her life around and become the person she wants to be.
This is definitely a beach read and not one to be over analysed. It’s a story of love and above all learning to love yourself before you can love others. There are parts I really liked and there are parts I didn’t, the same goes with the characters. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Annie at the start but she definitely grew on me and I ended up hoping for the best for her. Patrick was the loveliest character and seemed very genuine and likeable.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.
A fantastic read by a new author for me. I am converted as a fan and absolutely cannot wait to read more. This is unique and original. I have been pulled in and unable to put this one down.
I cannot say anything negative about this gorgeous book. it has been a fantastic read.
What a great book, pure escapism! When Annie is jilted at the altar by Alexander her whole life crumples in front of her eyes. Her would have been in laws are insistent that she go on the “honeymoon” that they had organised as a gift. After lots of persuasion and a random encounter with someone from her teens, she decides to go.
The book has a great narrative and lots of soul searching is done and Annie realises lots of things about her behaviour and actions and why she is like that.
The book appears on the surface to be fluffy chick lit however it carries a great moral of “remember who you are and be the best person you can be”.
This book was so so good! It’s a love story but it’s also a coming of age story. After being left at the alter Annie does a lot of self discovery throughout the book and so does her new old friend Patrick as he deals with his own losses and struggles. Together they escape their lives (literally - they go to Australia!) and figure out how to be themselves, the importance of taking risks and how to move forward in their futures.
I loved the chemistry between Annie and Patrick and I may have fallen in love with him myself haha. He’s so nice and sweet and downright hilarious in his goofy ways. This book had me laughing out loud at parts (hello “willygate”) and made me feel like I’d been to Australia myself with the beautifully described setting. I highly recommend this book to fellow rom-com lovers like myself and anyone who loves the friends to lovers trope.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the digital ARC of this book. All opinions remain my own as always.
Shortly after being left at the altar, Annie runs into Patrick, whom she hasn't seen since they were kids at summer camp. Her almost in-laws feel terrible about how their son treated her, and suggest she go on the non-refundable honeymoon trip they bought. When they okay her to take a friend, she invites Patrick.
Spending time with him, she realizes she's changed since the fearless girl she was when he knew her before. He accepts and encourages her in a way her ex never did. When did she stop living for herself and start living for other people? Can Patrick help her reconnect to her old self, and find love along the way?
From the beginning, I enjoyed this author's writing style. I felt immersed in Annie's world as she experienced it. The emotions were vibrant and heartfelt. Patrick is a big sweetheart, kind and adventurous—and exactly what Annie needs. The side characters were interesting, too. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys uplifting, romantic women's fiction.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
Every now and then I like to take a break from psychological thrillers and settle down to a decent romcom. This certainly fits the bill. After reading the blurb it sounded just what I needed, and it was!
Annie is set to marry her boyfriend Alexander, who she has been with since her university days. She thinks she has the perfect relationship but unfortunately it appears that Alexander does not feel the same, as when Annie arrives at the church she finds out that he is not going to turn up. One jilted bride!
Alexander’s parents are appalled at their son as they really like Annie so they insist that she still goes on honeymoon and she can take a friend. Here is where the story builds. Annie bumps into an old friend, Patrick, from her school theatre group and invites him along for the trip, just as friends.
It is the holiday of a lifetime and the two friends enjoy each other’s company, but soon they both develop feelings which they are unsure of. Will they just remain friends? Is it too soon to jump into another relationship?
I love the way this story gently unfolds and there is plenty of humour along the way.
The characters are believable and I warmed to Annie straight away.
I can really relate to this story as I fell in love with one of my best friends, unexpectedly. Believe me, it can happen!
Many thanks to netgalley, the publishers and the author for an arc. Really enjoyed reading this.
Publication date is 10th June 2021
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK to send me a digital review copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I had a great time reading this book. It makes me feel things, primarily due to this wedding. Like NO! I wasn't okay at all, even if I knew what will happen.
I feel like the novel is divided into two parts. The first one is for the honeymoon and the second is set in London. I liked that aspect as you continue to follow Annie and her new self back to London. However, I wasn't interested in some elements, and also, it feels like this part take a lot more space in the book than the Australian honeymoon. In the end, even if I understand the importance of these holidays, it doesn't feel that important.
I wasn't a big fan of the romance between Annie and Patrick at the beginning. I found it was too fast and quite unbelievable (she was just dumped at the church.) However, I liked how it slows down a bit but still being present throughout the story, especially in the second part of the novel. I also like that you don't have a big problem creating tension in the story; it's a lot more subtle.
I connect right away with Annie; I share a lot of the same trait with her, so for me, the story has another meaning; it's more than a story. I love her evolution toward herself, but also other people. I just found that sometimes the wrap up is too fast, easy and always happy. I am meh about Patrick. It's not that I don't like him; I like how he sees life and his history. However, sometimes I didn't understand his way of thinking. I like the group of friends Annie has. It was like having a drink with them. For me, except for Alexander and Annie's mom, I like that diverse cast of characters.
Overall, this story is uplifting and a good summer reading.
The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams
I was lucky enough to get this as an ARC from Netgalley and Avon books in exchange for an honest review .
I really enjoyed this one more than I thought I would! It really reminded me of the Sex and the City movie, but the ending was better.
Annie gets left at the altar. After the wedding her ex-in-laws-to-be (?) offer to pay for her to still go on the honeymoon because they were so appalled by what their son did to her. As she’s contemplating going , she runs into a friend from summer camp, Patrick. They reconnect and he convinces her to go on the free honeymoon and he goes along with her.
What I liked most about this story is that not only is it a romance story about falling in love after loss, but it is also a story about self love! Annie learns about herself and how to become truly happy in a romantic relationship, in her family relationships and with her career. My only complaint is that the beginning felt very slow and took a long time for me to get into it and some parts were a bit cheesy. 3.75/5⭐️
A really enjoyable read, first book read by this author and was just a perfect book to enjoy in the sun/ heat we have had, loved the characters Annie and Patrick and the main setting of Australia, well writren, believable and engaging
Another wonderful read by Laura Jane Williams. I wouldn't be surprised if her books are made into movies before long. I love the humour in her writing. I laughed out loud several times and cringed so much when Annie sent the text meant for Kezza to Patrick. The characters had such depth to them and I really related to Annie. I finished this book feeling so happy and with the knowledge that it's not too late to change your life. A must read this summer.
Four Stars; The perfect summer read for fans of The Unhoneymooners.
When Annie is jilted on her wedding day, it feels like her life is over, but actually, it's just the beginning of the rest of her life. Just days after the wedding that never was, Annie runs into Patrick Hummingbird, a boy she hasn't seen in twenty years, and they instantly connect. When everyone insists she go on her lavish honeymoon to Australia, refusing to go alone, Annie invites Patrick. As Annie’s friends reveal later, “everyone but the two of you knew you'd end up in bed together.”
The book is split into three parts: The wedding and aftermath, The Honeymoon, and Return Home. It was a quick read, and the honeymoon was really fun and sexy.
The book is told from Annie’s point of view entirely, and so you get her unfiltered stream of consciousness. She is deeply insecure, having moulded her personality to the way her mother and the girls in high school thought she should be, and then always tampering with her emotions and being chipped away at by her boyfriend-turn fiancé of 10 years. She also suffers from disordered eating, and self-loathing and Patrick sees all of this and proclaims, “You made a Lucky Escape.”
Overall this is a book about loss, grief, courage and putting yourself first.
Jilted on the day of her wedding to long-term beau Alexander, Annie is hurt, lost, confused and heartbroken.
After a chance meeting with childhood friend Patrick Annie makes a vow to say yes to every opportunity that comes her way so when the opportunity arises to go on her all expenses paid honeymoon to Australia with Patrick taking the spare ticket she throws caution to the wind. Could this be the escape she needs?
I enjoyed this story but it made me very jealous of all of the sights and sounds Annie and Patrick saw on their travels in Australia. I was rooting for the characters and ended up reading the book really quickly as I couldn't wait to find out what happened to them.
One thing I really like about Laura Jane Williams' writing is her depiction of women as real people with flaws and insecurities, it really makes you gel with the characters and really get behind them.
I really enjoyed my first dip in to Laura Jane William's novels, bringing to life an easy read and vibrant characters. Its the perfect read for this time of year, for those lucky enough to get abroad this year, on a staycation or even just a long bank holiday weekend in the garden with a gin in hand!
Annie was a great character and i found her very relatable but also a surprising character - without giving spoilers, I'm glad she learn to stand her ground. And Patrick.... ugh we all need a patrick.
I couldnt give it it the full five stars, as for me... as I felt the ending was not quite finished, i kind of needed more about how life went on for Annie and Patrick.
I would definitely recommend this to any romance reader and i cant wait to pick up the rest of Laura's work! I also now have unrealistic expectations for my honeymoon which the fiance will be thrilled about, thanks for that.
I loved this book. When I saw that it was a "take my new friend on my honeymoon after being jilted" book, I assumed that it wouldn't contain much beyond the honeymoon. I also assumed it might be a little unrealistic- falling in love after a week away together. This honeymoon was 3 weeks long and gifted by her former in-laws (who were more like fairy godparents- giving her an over the top vacation). It really added a lot for me as a reader that they had no worries for 3 weeks and the reason was explained. This book also extended beyond the honeymoon timeline and allowed for the characters to continue their story. In the end, the HEA felt true to the characters and the story.
If you want to feel love radiate off the pages you read- this is the book for you! Adorably captivating, this book is a story not only about mending a broken heart, but learning what it means to feel ones self again! From the moment Annie's heart breaks to her healing by reconnecting with an old friend- you feel the emotions stem from each page you turn. Patrick is an old camp friend Annie met in high school, and after she is left at the altar, he becomes the medicine to heal herself. Annie has always fought herself on her means to be happy- always listening to the negativity of her mother, being bullied at school. and finally giving all of herself to a man not worthy of her love. Patrick knew her before she became a shelled up version of herself- and watching Annie grow into the person she is meant to be is inspiring and heartwarming. I whole heartedly recommend this book not only for the romance novel lover, but for those who feel like they have lost themselves!
The book title is a good description. Annie is about to marry Alexander but is jilted in the worst possible way.....at the alter. She's devasted but after bumping into a male friend she once knew as a teenager and the persuasion to go on the honeymoon that was booked for her and her new husband, she takes her old friend. It's a journey to the other side of the world of self discovery.
She learns that she has indeed had a lucky escape and that her husband to be wasn't right for her. The main characters are likeable but Annie needed to find a back bone when it comes to her mother!
The book is slightly predictable but funny in places and there is some good sexual tension. It's an easy and pleasant read and provided a form of escape without having to think too much. Easy to put down and pick up again. Good holiday read down by the pool or on the beach. Sweet romcom.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest review. Schelded to released 10th June 2021
Also [osted to Goodreads.
Sometimes, a bad thing can turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to you, as is the case with Annie. She is left at the altar when her decade-long boyfriend changes his mind at the last minute. His parents are mortified, and urge her to take the elaborate Australian honeymoon they'd planned as their gift to the couple. She decides to go, and in a wonderful twist of fate, reconnects with Patrick, a childhood friend, and invites him to come along. Patrick turns out to be a recent widower, and also the world's most perfect person. Their romance progresses against the wonderful backdrop of an incredibly luxurious, first-class vacation. This is the perfect escapist romance for summer reading!
This is the first book I've read by this author and I definitely want to read more. It's light-hearted, and funny and romantic, just what I needed to read right now.
Annie gets jilted at the altar and heartbroken, she has to put the pieces of her life back together. She meets back up with Patrick, a childhood friend. Her ex in-laws, horrified and ashamed of what their son has done, insist she still goes on her honeymoon, with a ticket spare.
It's a predictable ending but so much fun. A perfect summer read.
Thank you so much to Avon Books and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely adore Laura Jane Williams’ writing - I’ve read The Love Square and loved it so when I got approved for this arc I was thrilled! This book is amazing, I love the writing style and it is so easy to read and digest, the perfect summer chick lit read. This book also covers on some heavier topics such as self identity and made it feel quite relatable.
The characters and places were written very well and some parts were absolutely hilarious! Will definitely be picking up a copy and I look forward to more writing from LJW in the future
This one quite honestly took me a bit to get into. I was struggling to connect with Annie, probably because I too struggle with my own self identify and I often read to get away from that. Once we got into the actual trip to Australia though, I was hooked and blew through the rest.
Patrick and Annie are so lovely together and this book was just the perfect amount of warm and fuzzies. Annie's growth was inspiring.
The Lucky Escape is Annie's story after she's jilted and left at the church doors without a groom. I really enjoyed this book and thought parts of it were hilarious. The growth of Annie as a character was lovely to read and I liked how her relationship with Patrick developed, and Patrick was such a great guy. The descriptions of the locations and activities they both took part in when in Australia were so brilliantly done, it made me want to be there. What I found particularly beautiful was how Annie gradually drops all her 'baggage' whilst she's out there and finds herself.
Overall rating: ★★★★
Annie is set to marry her longterm boyfriend, Alexander, but on the day of the wedding he doesn’t show up. In the upcoming weeks Annie is trying to pick herself back up and move on with her life. At the new fitness class she started, she bumps into an old friend, Patrick, and they end up talking more and more. Suddenly Alexander’s parents offer Annie an opportunity to go on her honeymoon (all expenses paid). Annie is reluctant to take the offer, but after a few drinks at the pub she ends up deciding to go and inviting Patrick along. So now Annie finds herself in Australia with Patrick, on the honeymoon she’s was supposed to be having with Alexander. Will this be exactly the trip she’s been needing or will it be the worst mistake of her life?
“I’m more of a best friend pretty than a leading lady knockout."
Oh my, I loved this book. I finished it in two afternoons whilst enjoying some sunshine and honestly it was the perfect little holiday in these difficult pandemic times. To me, this book was a reminder to just enjoy life when and where you can and to try to live life to the fullest. It also reminded me not to care too much about what other people think because you’re living your life for you and not anyone else.
"Assuming makes an ass out of you and me.”
Annie is flawed and far from perfect, but that is what makes her feel so realistic and it’s what made me like her and root for her. She goes through a whirlwind of life changing events in this book, and her character development and growth is amazing. And then there’s Patrick. Oh, Patrick *happy sigh*. He's so dreamy, and I really wanna know where I can get my own?! He was an absolute delight, and a breath of fresh air. So adventurous and such a great influence and motivator for Annie (and maybe for the reader as well). Patrick is currently living rent-free in my mind and I think he'll linger for quite a while.
If you're in the mood for a little holiday-esque escape, this feel-good romcom is definitely the way to go!
Thank you to Netgalley, Avon Books UK and Laura Jane Williams for giving me an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. (Thanks for the free escape to Australia!)
“Think about it: if we are all disappointing ourselves over and over in order to never upset anybody else, aren’t we putting the same pressure on them? If we all put ourselves first, wouldn’t that give permission for other people to put themselves first? Wouldn’t we all be happier?”
Annie is over the top excited to finally realise her plans and mary her long time boyfriend Alexander, she's had a girly night with her best friends and is ready to celebrate the way she's planned for so long. However, things don't follow the plan and Annie is devastated finding everything out of her control and somehow feeling the blame. Whilst trying to regain control she encounters Patrick, an old friend from when everything was simpler and fun and decides to throw caution to the wind and just go for it. Laura Jane Williams certainly knows how to express the highs and lows of feelings and brings us on a rollercoaster of emotion. Fun read.
Basically the perfect beach read. The book started off with a bang, having Annie practically left at the altar on her wedding day. In the days after, she reconnects with an old friend and they agree to go on her amazing Australian honeymoon together. I wanted to hear more about Annie's job and have more time with her friend group, but it's still a good time. It's a pretty classic, cinematic rom com - if you like them, you'll like this!
Annie has been with her fiancée for 10 years and the book begins on their wedding day, however he has had second thoughts and leaves it to the wedding planner to inform her he's not turning up. Annie, with the help of her friends and sister, goes on a journey to rediscover herself.
After a chance meeting with a man from her past, Annie makes a spontaneous decision to take him on her honeymoon. Annie and Patrick spend their trip together in Australia, both committing to moving forward with their lives and leaving their pasts behind. Will they move forward together?
This book was fun and light hearted. It’s a tale of self-discovery. Annie’s life is turned upside down when she’s left at the altar, she decides to go on her honeymoon with an old friend.
I did find the story lacking in some way, I wanted to get to the honeymoon part sooner and the romance was frustrating in a lot of ways.
I would still highly recommend The Lucky Escape, it is a classic beach read with a romantic lift
Thank you to Avon Books UK and Netgalley for an eARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Know that this is a beach book in so many ways. It's a (steamy in spots) second chance romance and a journey of self discovery for Annie was left at the altar and opts to go on her honeymoon with old friend Patrick. Their time together in Australia is one thing but when they get back to London, they have to deal with reality, which is more critical for Annie. She's got good friends and a smart little sister but she's struggled with her mother and now with her job. Some of it is unrealistic, it's not deep and it would be easy to criticize but you know what- it's a fun read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5
Laura Jane Williams has done it again!! I cannot even begin to explain how much I loved and adored this book - it was actual perfection. Laura Jane Williams also wrote one of my other favourite books Our Stop, so when the chance came to read this one as an ARC via Netgalley I jumped at the opportunity and I couldn’t be happier I did. I read this one in a day and a half and when I wasn’t reading it I wished that I was!
“When the day finally comes for Annie to marry Alexander, the last thing she expects is to be left standing at the altar. She was so sure he was Mr Right. Now, she has no idea how she could have got it so wrong. After a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend who reminds her of who she used to be, Annie takes a vow of her own: she’ll say yes to every opportunity that comes her way from now on. Could a spontaneous trip with Patrick be the way to mend Annie’s heart? She’s about to find out as she embarks on her honeymoon – with a man who’s not her husband.”
Now, this wasn’t your standard “pretend to be married / honeymooners to get a free holiday” storyline which I loved about this one. It was so much more! It was about friendship, trusting your gut, laughter, adventure, grief, following your heart, family, trust, saying yes to everything, sisterhood, new opportunities and “making lemonade out of lemons”.
The banter was absolutely amazing and the story progressed effortlessly. The fact that the honeymoon was in Australia was also awesome and I feel like it did our beautiful country justice! It has also instantly made me want to travel to Margaret River and explore the wineries and then travel back to Sydney and explore the nightlife further.
It was lighthearted with elements of sadness. It was empowering and inspiring, and it was bloody hilarious (the massage bit had me in stitches!) It is the perfect example of creating something good out of a bad situation and how saying the little word “yes”, even when you’re scared, can bring such joy and love into your life ☀️💗
This one comes out June 10th and if you buy one new release book this year it HAS to be this one! 👏 (also because in the acknowledgment section she gave a shout out to us Bookstagrammers so now you have to go and get it!)
Thank you so much to Laura, Avon books and Netgalley for allowing me to read this one before it’s release date - I couldn’t have enjoyed it more!!
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon books for the opportunity to read and review The Lucky Escape by Laura Jane Williams.
This is a fun and easy read. I finished it in a day. I loved the authors writing style which drew me in right from the start. My fave genre is a good old fashioned romance story and this didn't disappoint.
It tells the story of Annie who gets jilted at the altar and decides to try and turn her life around by going on her planned luxury honeymoon with Patrick who is an old friend who she meets again after her relationship ends.
The book touches on a few heavier topics which pull at the heart strings a little bit. Not going to lie, I had a tear in my eye in a couple of parts!
I was sure I had the whole plot figured out but did get a bit thrown towards the end when it looked as though Annie's life was going to go in a different direction to what we had been lead to believe but it twisted back very quickly.
Overall a fab holiday read, perfect for the beach!
Annie and Alexander had been together for many years and she had lived in his house for two years. Finally their wedding day had arrived. As they pulled up to the church, Annie knew that something was wrong as the wedding consultant was standing outside. The consultant came to tell her that Alexander had just texted her and was not going to come. He asked the consultant to tell Annie. Annie was in shock as she had no idea that Alexander did not want to marry her. He had not even made any effort to contact her or either of their families. In addition, he appeared to have left town. Annie immediately went to bed and didn't leave her bed for days. When she did get out of bed, she decided to start jogging. While jogging, she noticed a Boot Camp and decided to join it. At the Boot Camp, a man approached her and she realized that it was a friend from a drama camp that she had attended as a teenager. She and Patrick enjoyed talking of the fun times at the camp and began to spend a lot of time together. Alexander's mother had insisted that Annie still go on the honeymoon, She was not going to go as she had no one to go with, The night before the trip was to start, Patrick and Annie decided that they would go together as friends. They agreed that it was not a romantic trip and that they would sleep in separate beds.
The trip was an amazing three week adventure in Australia. Patrick brought out the fun side of Annie. She realized that she had been so obsessed with work and acting as Alexander had wanted that she had lost some of herself. This is a great book that I highly recommend,
I really enjoyed this book. Having read Our Stop before, I knew that I loved the authors writing style, so I was very excited to read some more of her work.
It was a really quick and easy read, I read it all in one day. The relationship was easy to root for. Annie in particular was a great character that I found rather relatable as someone of a similar age, who also questions whether she should have everything figured out by now.
My only issue really was that I found the story lost steam a little bit once they got back from the "honeymoon" to Austrailia. It felt a little like it fell into the trap of creating conflict for the sake of conflict. Some of the issues were understandable but I felt that the way it played out just seemed a little repetitive and then miraculously solved in half a page.
Overall I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any fan of cute, contemporary romance.
Oh to be on a sunny beach reading this! Great summer read, light hearted fun and a cute romantic comedy that will make you smile
This book was, for the most part, what I wanted it to be. A cute romance story that still manages to make us reflect on different topics. Perfect for someone who is looking for a fast and enjoyable read, but also for someone who, like me, is in a bit of a reading slump.
The premise sounded very interesting and I feel like it was executed really well until we got to my least favourite part of the book: the ending. It's not a bad ending, by any means. But I expected more from it.
Our main character is supposed to go through this life-changing situation and, honestly, I don't think she changed that much. However, I do appreciate the commentary on relationships that aren't going anywhere but people refuse to end for one reason or another. That plus the story of our other main character, love interest Patrick, provided a very interesting dynamic. Showing different ways of mourning the loss of a loved one and/or of a relationship.
My problem with their relationship is how it changed at the end because it felt very out of character at some points. It didn't really make sense to me.
Also, something that I didn't enjoy in this book was the classic "evil mum" character. Annie kept on vilifying her mum for the same things she did and I just find it very cliché to blame our bad life decisions on the parents that had too high expectations of their kids. Unless it's done properly and it shows a toxic dynamic and creates some social commentary.
For the most part, I did love the friendship between Annie and her female friends. It's always nice to see books that portrait female friendship as something good and not bitchy and toxic.
Despite my little complaints, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Perfect summer read.
I thought this was a great fun holiday read, a lovely tale that kept me wanting to push on and not put it down.
This is the first book that I have read by Laura Jane Williams. It will not be my last.
What a cute fun story. I truly believe that all things happen for a reason. This book shows just that.
Annie was left at the alter by Mr. Right who turned out to be Mr. Wrong. She was mad, sad and trying to pull herself out of the craziness that was in her world when she has a chance meeting with Patrick, an old friend. Patrick reminds Annie of how she use to be and how to not let fear get in the way.
This book was fun, quick and an easy read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for the advanced copy of this book.
#NetGalley #LuckyEscape
4.5 stars for this book! It was my first Laura Jane Williams read and I enjoyed it!
This book really focuses on letting go of the past and learning to open up and find yourself.
I really loved Annie. She was authentic, real, and her thought process throughout the book was super relatable. Patrick was incredible guy, and I loved that both characters were suffering and broken. And Freddie!! What a fun, sweet younger sister!
I like how the ending tied together, too. I know it’s a romance book but for a second I thought maybe it wouldn’t have a happy ending—but I’m so glad it did!
I really enjoyed this read—and now I desperately want to go to Australia!!
Thank you for the ARC :)
The Lucky Escape is a tale of three parts. The first part consists of a bride (our narrator Annie) being stood up at the altar by her long time partner Alexander.
Annie accepts the offer from her ex-mother in law, to go on an all expenses paid honeymoon to Australia.
Its who she decides to take with her that's the real shock, Patrick who is a long lost friend from her teenage drama camp twenty years prior, a bit random but she meets him at the gym.
As you can probably guess an inevitable romance insures. Also the discovery they make about each other. A phrase that is reaped during the honeymoon phase of this book is the "touch of his hand on my back..." and it goes from there.
The third part of the book is what happens when they return to London and back to their normal lives, where their communication seems to break down somewhat. I just felt there was to many inconsistencies in this part.
The best thing about this, I believe, was the 'core four' and Adzo who are Annie's best friends from university and
work. They support her throughout this whole story.
The worst part for me was the silly nick names the family give to each other, such as Annie- Doo, it just grated on me and didn't add anything to the story.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avor publishers for giving me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When Annie's ratfink fiance leaves her at the altar, she is devastated - enough to take her fiance's parents up on their offer to send her on the all expenses paid glitzy honeymoon she intended to take with him. Joining her is her childhood friend Patrick, who remembers her as the vibrant young teen she used to be before she allowed herself to surrender to societal expectations.
There was a lot I enjoyed about this book - I liked that Annie is capable of learning from past mistakes and she sticks to her decisions once she takes them. I liked that she feels her devastation and that she needed to grow into her relationship with Patrick. I really liked the description of her relationship with her mother because its quiet simmering resentment feels very real. And this really is a very good sales pitch for a five star honeymoon in Australia.
However, I found it difficult to really connect with Patrick. He's a total dreamboat but you can see all the details of how and where he was crafted to become exactly what Annie needed. While allowing Annie space to become the woman she was always meant to be, Patrick appears to have become more of a concept than a character. I can see the potential but I didn't see it quite realized.
This also is not the romance I thought I was getting - it has more of a women's lit, chicklit vibe, which I enjoy but it means the pacing was different.
This was a cute storyline. Annie is left at the alter but decides to go on her honeymoon anyway with and old friend she runs into. I loved the part where they ended up flying business class! 🤣🤣. While it was a cute storyline, it did drag a little slower than I was anticipating. It took the first 30 percent of the book to leave on the trip. Overall that a sweet story that is a great read if you like romance. 🙂
The Lucky Escape - Laura Jane Williams
Raced through it! Such a great little read, perfect beach read/sunbathing in the garden reading. This type of book can sometimes feel like it has quite a lot of filler material, but I did not find this at all with The Lucky Escape. We were thrown straight into the story with a dramatic beginning (Annie being left at the alter, after being in a relationship with Alexander for so many years) and then got to follow Annie recover from it in a spectacular way. Obviously not all happy endings get straight there so there were a few bumps in the road, but it made me all the more willing of Annie to find her peace in life and with family relationships. Thanks you so much Avon Books and NetGalley for the E-ARC in return for my honest thoughts.
True to its name, this book was a light-hearted travel rom-com that was much-needed amidst such dark times -- a lucky escape indeed. Highly recommend to lovers of rom-coms.
Our protagonist, Annie, experiences a life-altering experience : being left at the altar. She is devastated & confused. Just then, life throws her a lifeline, an opportunity to reinvent herself by embarking on the honeymoon regardless. Except this honeymoon would be with a man who was not her husband. This book follows Annie, not only on her honeymoon, but also her eventful journey towards self-love & self-discovery.
This book transported me to the sandy beaches & iconic wineries of Australia all from the comfort of my bedroom. I loved the escapism of it all. The travel aspect was invigorating, much amplified by the Annie's boundless enthusiasm. Despite being an adult fiction novel, the characters felt very youthful, witty & animated. I loved Annie's relationship with Freddie, her little sister, & also with her friends, Core Four. It gave Annie a lot more depth as a character. I felt Patrick was less interesting. HIs internal conflicts were not developed enough and although he was introduced well, with a strong voice, it did fade as the book went along. In the end, he felt very much like a plain Jane with not much distinctive qualities.
I enjoyed the romance. The meet-cute was to die for. I would argue the slow-burn was better than the actual romance! The writing was so easy to read, fun & fluffy. I really did breeze through the pages!
Overall, I would still recommend this book to lovers of rom-coms (specifically, Sophie Kinsella)! It is a great book to remind us of all the joys that lie beyond this pandemic,.
When she arrives, all dressed in her wedding finery, the last thing Annie Ginn expected was to be told the groom, Alexander, had sent a text to the wedding planner to cancel the wedding. From this inauspicious, devastating beginning comes ‘The Lucky Escape’…..
Annie and her family aren’t the only one upset by Alexander’s behaviour – so are his parents. They insist that she still goes on the dream honeymoon that they’ve paid for – and they’re also happy to change the name on the ‘spare’ ticket. Whilst still considering this, Annie meets someone she hasn’t seen for more than a decade, someone who remembers what she used to be like as a teenager and makes her rethink her options. That’s how he ends up travelling with her, as a friend, on her luxurious honeymoon without a husband and finding out more about herself and her life choices, making the wedding that didn’t happen become a very lucky escape . . .
You’ve just got to love Annie’s young sister and best friends and how they’re always there for her. Patrick is also so inspiring to her, especially when you discover some of his past – no, I’m not saying what, that’d be a spoiler! This is a lovely story of making the most of your opportunities, learning to live a life that makes you happy and not one you spend trying to always keep others happy at your expense. It is a story with plenty of fun and a truly dream holiday of a lifetime as well, of course, as a heartwarming romance.
Thank you to Avon Books and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.
Having read The Love Square by this author last year I was thoroughly looking forward to this book. The Love Square was by far one of the best reads for me of 2020 and I feel that I held this book up to comparison with that and it didn’t quite match the same standard.
That being said this is an interesting read. The bride jilted at the alter. The honeymoon that her non in-laws insisted she go on. Meeting an old male friend and taking him in the honeymoon. Falling in love with him then all the trouble that ensues.
I liked the characters but didn’t love them. I didn’t really understand the relationships in the family and in the end I wasn’t sure I wanted the happy ending.
Some interesting bit part characters and a good storyline.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
“The Lucky Escape” by Laura Jane Williams
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a fun ride! I love when authors come up with fun ways to make the boy meets girl romcom fresh!
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC! The book is being released this Thursday 6/10!
Annie imagined her wedding as the best day of her life. She was marrying Alexander her college sweetheart. She did not imagine being told by the wedding planner that Alexander wasn’t coming. He didn’t call or text. He ran.
After a couple weeks of crying and being miserable she was given the opportunity to find herself and enjoy a few weeks vacation. The Honeymoon that wasn’t going to happen or was it? Alexander’s parents spent a ton of money on a luxury honeymoon that was non refundable. They offered it to Annie as a vacation. Annie didn’t want to go alone, but after running into her teenage friend Patrick they came up with a fun idea. Why not go together as friends?
I don't know why I put off reading this for so long. Once I finally picked it up, I was hooked and I read it in one sitting. Annie is jilted on her wedding day, and her ex's parents encourage her to go on the honeymoon to Australia anyway. She ends up reconnecting with an old childhood friend, Patrick, and on a whim they decide to have him tag along on the honeymoon.
This was adorable. Annie was kind of all over the place, I had some mixed feelings there, but I could also relate. Also - can somebody find me a Patrick? I just loved his character.
This book had a little bit of all the things I love. A jilted bride who decides to take that honeymoon anyway, a blast from the past and fate making all the things happen. Annie was left at the alter by Alexander, and if that isn't bad enough, he leaves the country. She has no explaination for why he walked out on a 10 year relationship. No way to get closure. Days after she is jilted, she runs into Patrick, an old friend from drama camp when she was just a teen. They had a connection then, but there is something pulling them together now.
When Annie's ex inlaws encourage her to take the honeymoon she had planned and they paid for, Patrick invites himself along so that he can help Annie find herself again.
If you think this is just an easy love story of finding love after heartache, think again. Both of the characters have trememdous issues to work through. The biggest issue I had with the book was the speed in which they were there one minute and thrown by the wayside the second. I do understand that Annie and Patrick found eachother for a reason and that fate had a hand in all of this, but it felt a little rushed for my taste, even if I adored the plot line. 3.5 stars for this light summer read.
Perfect summer reading here. This book is light and quick. The characters and storyline have enough there without seeming too heavy. Enjoyable!
4 stars for this cute romance!
Annie is left by her fiance at the altar and is now going on her honeymoon alone. That is until she bumps into Patrick, someone from her past she reconnects with. On a whim Annie invites Patrick to go on the honeymoon with her and just might learn to love again.
I enjoyed this fun rom com and liked the main couple. This might have been five stars but found Annie to be confusing at times and she often had contradictory opinions. I liked the honeymoon trope and how Annie and Patrick found love after having broken hearts. The vacation was fabulous and the tension between Annie and Patrick just grows as the book progresses. I don't want to give too much away but I think this is a great beach read.
Would recommend this for a fluffy rom com!
This is my favorite type of book to read in the summer- fluffy, entertaining and funny. I loved the main character and enjoyed reading all about her drama and antics. I felt this book was well written, it was enough to hold my attention throughout but not heavy at all. Definitely a great summer read!
What a perfect summer read! Told in first person narrative ( which I love ), this is about Annie who gets jilted at the church doors and how she tries to put her life back together. Annie was the perfect character who I connected with straight away. Australia sounds amazing and it’s made me want to visit ( their budget would suit me perfectly 😂). Only reason this is 4 stars and not 5 is because I would have liked a little more excitement at the end. Perfect for a summer day, with or without the pool next to you.
I was sent this book because I reviewed Laura Jane Williams's last book in 2020 - I really enjoyed it so couldn't wait to read 'The Lucky Escape'.
I love a cute, romantic story - especially if the main character is figuring out who they want to be for themselves. Although some parts brought a tear to my eye - I think I relate to characters who gradually release they've lost bits of who they used to be and forgot what it's like to be happy.
I read it in just 4 days so that should tell you how much I enjoyed it.
This book is the perfect romantic beach read. It starts out with heartbreak and proceeds to show that the sad moments are just the beginning if you're willing to take the opportunities life presents you with.
Annie really does have a lucky escape when her boyfriend of 9 years leaves her at the altar and disappears. She's understandably heartbroken and a bit of a mess, but a serendipitous meeting with a man who knew her as an outgoing adventurer she hasn't been in years and her almost in-laws offer to still pay for a honeymoon result in a dream-like trip that opens her eyes not only to new love but to who she really is once she stops worrying about always making others happy first.
I'd just like to say that Patrick is the most wishful-thinking perfect book boyfriend ever, but I wouldn't change a thing about him.
It's a sweet and romantic story that doesn't shy away from including moments of sadness and doubt, using them instead as turning points and inspiration in Annie's journey. There are so many learning moments in this quick read, and they're all presented with such simplicity that you barely even notice that some truth bombs are getting dropped. It keeps the book from being too preachy about being yourself and taking care of yourself, but it still does a great job of pushing that message across. I really appreciate that.
Overall, I seriously do think that this is the perfect beach read. It's light and fun, but it has enough gravitas to actually make you think. Definitely, one I'd recommend for a summer TBR.
Many happy thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the early read!
Annie and Alexander lived together, although the house was his, and after years of seeing everyone else get married, it was now time for them. Everything was perfect, she had lost weight, the bridal gown fit her beautifully, and all their family and friends were going to celebrate them getting married. Unfortunately, Alexander had decided differently and been the coward he was he had phoned the wedding planner to tell her the wedding was off! It was a day Annie would never forget, but for the wrong reasons.
When Annie bumped into an old friend from camp they both went to for acting when they were teenagers, he made her feel like the girl she used to be, with his tales from the past. Patrick put the sparkle back in her. So when her ex-future-in-laws offered her the luxury honeymoon three week trip to Australia, fully paid, she took it and drunkenly invited Patrick along too.
The story is told by Annie and how she sees situations. I liked how the author showed all her different sides. It had been a matter of meeting Annie on a high followed by the worst time in her life, so not the true every day Annie. There were stages that she progressed through in the story, not always making the right choices.
I liked that the story wasn’t all sugar and spice with someone sweeping her off her feet. It was a story of other people having pasts that have changed them. It is a story of giving and taking, not just leaning on someone, and how they make it better. I don’t think of this as a love story but a life story.
Many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.
This was so cute! Patrick was amazing, we love an emotionally mature man! He was great but started to fade out into the background after the trip. It was more of her, less of the romance. I still liked it. It was cute and easy read. There weren’t a lot of troubles and if they were they were resolved quickly and very very easily. Everyone just apologized out of nowhere and puff solved.
