Description

By being her anxious, honest, and just plain silly self, Jackie Davis’ potato-shaped character proves that, even though opening up to others is scary at first, vulnerability can be a superpower.

Vulnerability Is My Superpower features Jackie Davis's relatable diary comics about self-discovery, mental health, relationships, and childhood. From bouts with anxiety and insecurity to the thrill of simple pleasures like secretly trying on other people’s coats at a party, she’s figuring things out as she goes along, navigating domestic life with her husband, Pat (aka “the Purple Guy”), and sharing her most embarrassing thoughts and habits so you don’t have to.

For anyone who struggles with self-confidence or just likes to scrutinize the curious workings of relationships and everyday life, the confessional comic gems in this book invite laughter at even the most awkward and vulnerable moments while making you feel less alone.

Cute & occasionally lol funny! I'd think pretty much every adult will be able to relate to something in here....she puts into drawing/comic form.....anxieties, wishes, thoughts/ideas.... It's nice for adults to have to enjoy a quick, funny, relatable read in comic form! The artwork is real accurate/appropriate/cute too!
I received this e-ARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing via NetGalley, & in return I offer this, my own fair/honest review.

Pros: I was so excited to learn about this book on NetGalley because I have seen the author/artist's work on Instagram! I loved the message in this book and, as someone who lives with anxiety, found the book to be very relatable. I appreciate that the author combines serious with silly throughout. "Not Right for Me" and "I Get to Decide" were two of my favorites. (I also never thought about what Y2K stands for until reading this book!) I think this book is great for those who will relate to stories about mental health and insecurity but also for loved ones who want to learn more about what it is like to live with those struggles. I also enjoyed how this book included comics about living through the pandemic--I think it's the first book I've read that comments on the pandemic and how it affects so many small parts of our lives.

Cons: I've read several books in the genre of mental health-related comics, and why I liked this one, I've read others that I liked more. I'd round up to 3.5 stars if half stars were an option.

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this book!

This was fine. Underpants and Overbites, altogether, is mostly just fine. The self-expression and self-discovery seen in the strip are enjoyable, but the humor rarely clicked for me. I also like Davis's art style.

The collection feels well-composed, but it really just didn't click with me. There were some moments where Davis wrote about anxiety, and that spoke to me. Otherwise, it was a lot of comics I didn't not like but I didn't really enjoy, either.

If you're into heartfelt comics with some humor dashed in, especially heartfelt comics centering around self-discovery, this should be up your alley. It's short, the comics are quick, and I could totally see a lot of people enjoying this one.

This collection of diary comics is endearingly familiar, as if reading about your new friend. Author Jackie Davis successfully uses comics to explore many aspects of daily life, mental health and weird thoughts--and I loved it! I felt as though I were meeting a kindred spirit; getting inside the head of someone like me. A quick, easy read but one that you will want to read again and again.

Vulnerability is My Superpower will be published on April 13, 2021. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. #vulnerabilityismysuperpower #netgalley

As a 32 year old adult this book was incredibly relatable! It helped me normalize feelings and thoughts I have knowing other people have those same thoughts, worries and fears. At times this book was laugh out loud funny (especially as a kid who was also forced to play oboe in band growing up because it was “unique”). This book is inspirational, funny and great all wrapped into one, with great illustrations! Good for all ages! So glad she took a leap and created this book, the title speaks for itself!

This book can be summed up in one word: relatable. I have never related so hard to a comic before. I found myself laughing out loud at several points in the book. It has humor and heart, giving you the feeling that you are not alone. It's quirky and weird in the best possible way. This story is about the author's life while also being about the readers. All of the little things we don't notice we do throughout the day and throughout our lives are highlighted here. It's the simple things like "running up carpeted stairs like an animal" or "a traffic jam in the opposite direction". If you have ever felt lonely, out of place, or just full on weird, you need to read this! Introverts reunite!

Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this in advance! Such a breath of fresh air, I will recommend this to everyone and have our library purchase it.

Interesting book.
Can't imagine a grown-up still can be this vulnerable like teenagers. :-) Well, nothing wrong to express the feelings.
A fun read.
4.5 stars.

I was first attracted to the title! Vulnerability is like a buzzword for me! So it’s no surprise I related heavily to Jackie’s way of existing in the world. The sincerity of the work was so refreshing and would really suit a long form comic too (versus these shorter ones). Sometimes the segments actually felt like they cut off a little short, ending at the suggestion of change rather than after the change itself, which I wanted to see.

I loved her ability to mix seriousness and fun, art and deep narrative. It was about her growing up, learning to love herself and have empathy for others. I just felt like I could relate on a human level and would think a lot of people could, especially women who are taught not to take up space and please others, and anyone with anxiety. It WAS vulnerable in a way I so appreciated.

I loved the lists. A lot of them reach into places of your brain you forgot about but signified a “universal” experience. They made me want to notice the small things. Overall, I felt Jackie exhibited an acute observation and analysis of life and self... but with underpants and overbites.

Vulnerability Is My Superpower is powerful (as the title might imply), honest, and an enjoyable read. I appreciated Jackie Davis's style and disclosure of self in this book.

This book is exactly the type of book I can relate to. As someone who struggles with anxiety and mental health illness, this book helped me feel not so alone. I would definitely buy a copy of this book and share with all my friends.

I follow a few gently humorous webcomics to counteract the seemingly unending negativity of my social media feeds and Underpants and Overbites by Jackie E. Davis is one of my favourite emerging gems. Touted as “diary comics”, Davis’ work is introspective, relatable, and often very funny. Vulnerability is My Superpower is Davis’ first collection in book form, and although I was delighted to come across a free review copy on NetGalley, I will happily buy this collection upon release in order to support this young woman and her art. And you should, too.

****3.5 stars***
This was just the book I needed as it was a nice change from some of the heavier books I’ve read lately. It was a fun and light read, despite tackling serious issues. I particularly enjoyed the humor and the colorful graphics. Overall, quite a good read and I do recommend it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.

We all feel vulnerable sometimes and this comic illustrates that perfectly. It's funny, interesting and so life-like! I had a great time reading it and I can agree with a lot of things said in this comic.

Jackie Davis’s comic diary is a unique and often hilarious way of dealing with her insecurities, childhood, and life in general. From thoughts that keep her awake at night to feeling like two people are battling inside her, there is so much that is relatable in Vulnerability is My Superpower.
The comics are often beautifully drawn with watercolor. I laughed, I reflected, and I loved every second of this collection.

Vulnerability is My Superpower will be released April 13 2021.

I received an advanced readers copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This comic is brilliant. It really does examine the power of self-doubt and vulnerability on making you braver and stronger. Like one sketch says "it makes me feel less alone".

Also - Butter Udder is perfect.

Jackie Davis has capture her inner thoughts and mine. Vulnerability is my superpower too and her illustrations humorously depict how I look at relationships, friends, love, and even my pets.

I truly enjoyed this graphic novel! It was cute, heartwarming, SO relatable, and funny. It reminded me of the Sarah Scribbles comics, but longer and better. Perfect for the 20-something or 30-something who feels totally lost in this world of productivity obsession and capitalism. The graphic novel is a collection of mini-comics, about topics ranging from "10 Feelings I Love" to "Marriage" to quitting a paying job to write comics. The comics are quirky and not what you would expect, given the titles, but that makes it all the better. I blew through this in an hour and could not put it down, even though I was beginning to see spots from the eye strain of staring at my iPad after staring at my computer for 8 hours at work. I can't wait to read more of Jackie Davis's work.

Oh gosh, is this book relatable! Jackie E. Davis has crafted an absolutely hilarious yet totally truthful book in Vulnerability is My Superpower: An Underpants and Overbites Collection.

This selection of comics is seriously funny but hits way too close to home. In all the best ways, of course! I truly marvel at how much this book made me smile, chuckle and feel like someone understood me. Life and adulting is hard, so books like this that can make light of some of the tougher and stranger parts of adulthood is always welcome. I love it and highly recommend picking this book up.

I will say, I am kind of judging Jackie though... Who likes bugs flying into their mouth? That's the one part of adulthood (and my childhood, for goodness sake) that I'm definitely over. Or when they fly into my eyes... No thank you! Please explain Jackie!

The comics are goofy and silly (which is the point) but also are colourful and sassy enough to keep you interested. It's a set of comics that you can binge or jump back into if you don't want to commit. It has everything going for it that I want in a small comic strip series. Jackie, you are awesome! Thank you!

Five out of five stars.

Who isn’t scared about letting their weird shine?! The cartoon version of Jackie Davis of ‘Underpants and Overbites’ fame, isn’t! Err, she was - but now she’s not anymore. Because se found out that embracing your weird and putting it out proudly in the world for all to see is delightfully adorable, funny, and so, so relatable. We follow her doddle doppelganger through feeling so uncomfortable she can’t share her whole self to showing you all her weird so you don’t feel weird, but then also realize you’re weird too - in the best way. And it’s all here in delightfully relatable short comics about the magic of what happens when we aren’t scared to share who we really are. I already freaking loved these comics before, but my heart is smiling ear to ear after reading this book - like, more than I thought possible from some silly little comics that are somehow anything but silly and little.

This was a cute comic about learning to be happy with yourself and knowing the darkness doesn't last, that asking for help is not a weakness, and you are not alone.

I've seen Jackie's work on and off over the years, and always found it relatable, but for whatever reason I hadn't done a deep dive, so to speak, into her comics. I really wish I had.

This books is so beautiful, I can't even begin to explain my feelings about it, but I will try. Reading Underpants and Overbites is super soft and cozy and relatable, while also making you think because there's just something about it that hits different. There have been times - while reading this book as well as her other strips - where I have felt that connection with something she mentions and realize that it's okay to feel a certain way.

The fact that she takes ownership of her feelings and isn't afraid to be herself makes me feel like it's okay to feel that way too, even if it's not the best or healthiest feeling. Because it's still part of us and it still shapes who we are. She did truly make vulnerability her superpower. And in doing so, gave all of us a bit of it too. I certainly felt better and more accepting of my imperfections and idiosyncrasies.

Some strips are so silly, some are so poignant, and some a mix of both - I sometimes just stopped to stare at the page for a while and let it sink in. A book I'll certainly be revisiting, and my first 5 star review of the year.

The cover of this book got me interested in reading it. I thought it might be geared toward young readers and was pleasantly surprised that Jackie Davis' comics have ageless appeal. The author has a great sense of humor that ties with the human psyche. Probably everyone can relate to at least a few of the situations presented in this book. I throughly enjoyed reading the comics and have signed up to follow this author on Facebook! Her comics are funnier than most found in the Sunday paper these days!! This book would make a great gift, especially during these trying times of COVID-19. Kudos to Jackie!

Thank you for the E Arc NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing. Boy can I relate to this book. I laughed out loud many times to different situations. To be honest I’ve been having a bad week and this book just made me smile. It reminds us none of us are truly alone in this journey we call life and there is always someone that can commiserate. Loved it!

Vulnerability Is My Superpower gives exactly what the title promises. This will make you want to conquer self-doubt and turn your vulnerabilities to possibilities. It's super inspiring, and much-needed especially in these uncertain times. Reading this made me feel less alone and more understood. I highly recommend this book to absolutely everyone! This is just one of the most wholesome and pure things ever published.

Big thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel for the ARC 💙

Some people write Instapoetry, others draw themselves as they see themselves. Both artists offer unflinching, vulnerable glimpses into their lives, but for some reason I prefer the latter.

Near the end of the book Davis shares an experience with a Barista who tells her that she made him feel less alone. That is the thing about this collection: It made me feel seen. Understood. Represented. Less alone.
