IT WAS THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME: PROTECT HER
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he manages to smuggle a note to his new wife, Hannah: protect her. Hannah knows exactly who Owen needs her to protect - his sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. And who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
As her increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, his boss is arrested for fraud and the police start questioning her, Hannah realises that her husband isn't who he said he was. And that Bailey might hold the key to discovering Owen's true identity, and why he disappeared. Together they set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen's past, they soon realise that their lives will never be the same again...
A beautiful and thrilling mystery, perfect for readers of Lianne Moriarty and Celeste Ng.

I absolutely loved this book. It had me hooked from the very first page. It was full of twists and turns and I really felt as though the characters were believable and also likeable. It's hard to write a review without giving spoilers away but the plot of the story was unlike any that I had read before and I just wanted to keep on reading. Five stars!! Will definitely be reading more by this author.
This is the first novel I've read by Laura Dave and I found it to be a beautifully written, gripping and compelling read. It has a great premise and I loved the female characters. It's full of unexpected twists and turns that for me was reminiscent of the best of Harlan Coben and Linwood Barclay.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital ARC
Ooh this was intriguing and full of mystery. Very cleverly written and well-paced, this kept me guessing all the way through. How well do you really know your husband? Thrilling stuff.
I really loved this gripping thriller and couldn't put it down. The main characters are appealing but realistic, which makes it very easy to become completely engrossed in their situation. The story is a clever one, and I certainly didn't guess the ending. I would definitely read other books by this author. Even the typo - chaise lounge for chaise longue didn't irritate me too much!
This book was so brilliantly written. I could literally picture the characters on screen and the story unfolded at a decent pace, enough to keep you gripped without the addition of too many characters. My only complaint is that it was too short!
This isn't my usual genre for reading but I've heard a lot of good things about it so figured it must be worth a go.
I can happily report that it was definitely worth a go.
Hannah's husband, Owen has vanished. He's done a bunk as the company he works for is suddenly raided by the FBI.
Owen leaves behind his teenage daughter with a note for Hannah simply to "protect her".
What follows is Hannah's struggle not only to figure out what's happened to her husband, but also to form done sort of bond with his daughter; no easy task as she's only recently come into her life.
I really enjoyed this book. The story flows well from scene to scene, and even though each chapter bumps us back through old memories and the current mystery, it never loses its grip on you.
My only gripe with this is what at one point the phrase "could care less" is used when it clearly should be "couldn't care less".
My first novel from this author, but I don't think it will be my last.
First book in a long time where I have read it within the same day, showing just how good this book is! Excited for the tv series now but I always prefer to read the book first as I usually prefer the book!
I loved the twists in this book that kept my guessing, wondering what was going to happen next.
Everyone’s worlds are torn apart by Owen disappearing. The author really opens the worlds of this family writing about both the past and the present. This book is written to keep you in suspense and switching between loyalty to characters. Laura Dave is a new author to me but certainly a new favourite.
The characters were really brought to life and the exploration of the relationship between Hannah and Bailey really captured me! I even jumped at the bit introducing Charlie, and felt a soft spot for Nicholas. Don’t want to give any spoilers by going into detail of the storyline.
I received a free review copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest and unedited feedback.
A powerful tale about a missing husband, and explores whether we really know those we are closest to.
When her husband sends a note via a young girl from his football coaching class, asking her to protect his daughter, his wife is impelled to find out where he is and why he has disappeared. This becomes a more complex job when she realises she is not sure who he is. The quest takes her across America and into his past.
This is a tense, absorbing and reflective story and the journey to find him is both an internal thought process and external detective work. Beautifully plotted and shows the strength that can come from adversity. Highly recommended.
