Description

Yvonne Edison thought she was so lucky, dating a hunky high school football hero. She was proud to be wearing Dick Dunn’s class of 1968 ring. She thought their future was college, marriage, and a family together. Dick thought his future was adding her V-card to his growing collection before moving on to corrupting college coeds.

She supposed all innocent girls had rude awakenings. New-boy-in-town Randy Sparks made her forget her unfaithful first sweetheart. Well, almost. But did Randy adore her or was he more enamored with playing basketball and fighter plane games?

Daniel Adams knew Yvonne only saw him as the boy next door. His twin sister, Debbie, was her best friend so Yvonne always tolerated him growing up. But one day he realized she had morphed into a stellar beauty and had his pulse racing and boys flocking around her. By the time he was old enough to get a part-time job and buy his own set of wheels, he worried that she may be permanently attached to some other fool.

Yvonne sampled a variety of boys: the jock, the party animal, the hippie, the poet. But she wasn’t finding true love like her baton-twirler girlfriends. Was it because she’d kept her boyfriends wanting more like a good girl? Or had she craved control too much to let anyone get so intimate?

Fast forward to ten years later, when a medical problem threatened her perfectly manicured marriage. There was a treatment for her malady, but as her husband discovered, it may have been worse than the disease. The serious side effects threatened their relationship, and her happiness kept spinning out of reach just like that baton she once tried to master. She would need all of his love and support to grab on tightly.

Catch it Spinning is the first of the Twirler Quartet. The turbulent late 1960s and early 1970s provide the social unrest that simmers in the background even in a sleepy Midwestern city.

Though just a decade apart, the woman before me lived such different lives. I do remember the 60's and 70's, though, through the eyes of a child. I loved "Catch it Spinning," by Claudia Severin. The story centers on Yvonne Edison and then, her love, Daniel Adams. She brings these characters to life, problems and all, with such realistic actions and dialog. The secondary characters are featured so that it's easy to find interest in them, and ensuing novels. I wanted something a little different from what I usually read - you know, where everyone has model good looks, are swimming in money, and their lives shift out of orbit, by meeting "the one." With "Catch it Spinning," you can expect drama, angst, humor, humorous situations, social issues, unrest, health issues, character growth, romance and love. A very memorable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting time & Raw topics

This book was unlike anything I have read- ‘real’ teens in the late 1960s, grown into new parents in the ‘80s, (which were the ages of my parents at those times). Although I found the multiple teen pregnancies a tad far-fetched, I realize it also helped make the point that teens during the 60’s in conservative Lincoln, NE were in the midst of a sexual revolution. Having personal experience with infertility, the writing on that topic was very relatable. I loved the setting in and descriptions of Lincoln and how ‘then’ compares to now!
I look forward to the next book in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a book I couldn't put down

I absolutely loved Catch It Spinning. The period of time (1960's and 70's) was so well depicted; teenagers in the Midwest doing what teenagers did, the sexual revolution, and their transition to young adulthood were beautifully weaved into the characters' personal stories. I grew to love each character and reading about their ups and downs. Claudia Severin is an amazing writer who has taken her own experiences, used her own ancestry in her first book, Her Side of History, and written wonderful memoirs that capture your mind and your heart. I recommend Catch It Spinning for an amazing trip down a memory lane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read!

I often find myself reading books with heavy topics that I become emotionally invested in. While I love books like that, sometimes I am not in a place where I want to share in the characters’ sadness. Enter Catch it Spinning. This book was a fun and easy read. It’s the perfect beach read or break from reality.

Severin has a gift for description. You can visualize the characters but are not inundated with information that doesn’t enhance the story. I enjoyed the familiarity of the setting of my hometown. I look forward to reading the second book in the series.
