Description

Jimmy Hoffa is one of America’s most enduring mysteries. Over the years authorities have dug up a Michigan horse farm, looked beneath a swimming pool, and pulled up floorboards. Now, through impressive connections—to President Kennedy, to government lawyer Jim Neal, and to investigative reporter John Seigenthaler—author Bill Henry offers new insights into Hoffa’s prosecution in his new novel, Fatal Alliance. In compelling and concise prose, Henry reveals the fact that Neal, during trial breaks, convinced Hoffa that the FBI was secretly surveilling his every move. He also offers the stunning revelation that had certain Oval Office conversations been reported, they would have most likely saved Hoffa’s life.

In Fatal Alliance, Henry expertly relays how convicted mobsters protected Hoffa during his prison term, and how his desperate attempt to regain union office following his release led to his gangland murder. Ignoring warnings from a friendly Mafia boss, Hoffa threatened to expose illegal gains by Teamster-associated mobsters during the years of his incarceration. This brazen action put him on a downward spiral, ending when these “friends” convinced Hoffa to attend a conciliatory “sit-down” which was, in fact, a carefully planned death trap.

Following government service, Henry practiced law in D. C.’s private sector for the next quarter-century. He returned to his hometown of Memphis in 1994 as president of the Rising Tide Foundation, an organization created to promote the formation of minority owned businesses. Advance Praise

“Bill Henry has given us a highly readable and riveting account of one of America's great mysteries - the dark world of Jimmy Hoffa and what happened to the brash and brassy labor boss.”

--Tom Brokaw, NBC Universal

“Jimmy Hoffa was one of the most compelling, if not tragic, American figures of the 20th century -- from his time as a union boss, to his prosecution and conviction for an assortment of crimes, to his mysterious death. InFatal Alliance, E. William Henry has authored a well-researched and interesting book about this longtime teamster leader, one that can serve as a reminder of Lord Acton’s dictum, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

--James A. Baker, III, 61st U.S. Secretary of State

“High praise and gratitude for Bill Henry’s gripping account of the fight for the soul of the labor movement, and American politics. Fatal Alliance is a real life thriller meticulously detailing Jimmy Hoffa’s rise as one the most powerful and talented union leaders in American history but whose fight for working men and women is tragically shattered by his ties to the mob. As a young girl I watched my father Robert Kennedy in the Senate Racket Hearings investigate those who corrupted unions and politics and am grateful for Henry’s determination to tell what happened to Jimmy Hoffa and why.”

--Kathleen Kennedy Townsend

“Bill Henry’s compelling narrative offers new insights into the life and death of Jimmy Hoffa, one of labor’s most powerful union leaders, and the clash between him and Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Carefully researched and historically accurate, Fatal Alliance is a fascinating read.”

--Aubrey Harwell, Senior Partner, Neal and Harwell

“Bill Henry brings a fresh and unique perspective to the Hoffa criminal cases and the Kennedys' effort to clean up union corruption. The book is a remarkable achievement.”

--The Honorable Gilbert S. Merritt, Circuit Judge, U. S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit
