Description

In the seedy Tenderloin district of San Francisco, young Nadine struggles to take care of her younger brothers and mute sister, as well as please her abusive mother. When her mother tries to obtain more welfare money, authorities discover that Nadine is a gifted child, which qualifies her for an advanced education program. Angry that her daughter now will stay longer at school and will not be available to babysit, a brutal fight ensues. Advance Praise

Nadine in the Tenderloin is a sensitive and thorough picture of the social service and juvenile justice system as it affects the lives of neglected and abused youth, and a vivid description of life in a multi-ethnic, economically depressed inner city. The educational options for both special and regular education are well described. And the psychological dynamics of children, come through to the reader with powerful compassion. But moreover, it is a good story! Not only is it compelling, it is ultimately optimistic. We see how a bright child overcomes abuse, has a drive to learn, and solves her problems through the actions of competent and caring professionals and institutional services—police, social workers, therapists, and counselors. It is clear that the author has “been there” and knows not only the logistics but the commitments of those dedicated to the helping professions.

For readers familiar with the San Francisco Bay Area, the scenes described are familiar and regnant with meaningful details. For those not familiar, the context makes sense and is coherent.

The book works for the youthful reader, but also for adults interested in the vicissitudes (to use one of the advanced vocabulary words that Nadine identified and wanted to learn as she listened to people talk and thought about her life and predicaments) of the complicated life experience of Nadine and those around her.”
