Description
Dig to live.
It's all Lynn has ever known: scouring the tunnels and caverns of metal and trash for ancient relics of glass and plastic, then selling them in the Commons to the Technicians for enough platelets to get by another few weeks. The Technicians trade with the Ceiling above. The Ceiling sends down food and supplies. Lynn and her team return to the tunnels. It's the circle of life.
But life isn't easy for a Digger. There's Trappers waiting to grab you and Gangers ready to steal your dig. There's hounds feeding on whatever poor sap gets lost along the way.
Lynn knows the risks. She does the job. She has a good team behind her. She knows what to do should anything go wrong.
But what happens when everything goes wrong?
What happens when there's no way out, with the injuries piling up and the food dwindling down as the ravenous hounds grow closer and closer?
And what about the sounds? Lynn's pa died many years ago; her ma too. Why can she still hear them, their nearly forgotten voices echoing along these abandoned tunnels?
Only one thing is certain: If Lynn and her team can't dig to live, they will no doubt die down here, trapped for all eternity among the endless remains of things long abandoned.
Rusted Sky is the thrilling, claustrophobic new sci-fi novella from Nicholas "Tac" Whitcomb.

Nick really hits it out of the park with his second novel! It is quite different than his first book, ""The Twin Cities"".
You jump directly into the perspective of Lynn, a Digger, in a post-apocalyptic world underground where social stratifications lump you into very narrow ways of life- and not just narrow due to the ramshackle, grime-covered old Shafts where people struggle to pay for narrow rooms as homes. You're introduced to her fellow Diggers, very different people each, and they are as relatable as Lynn is. It's a page-turning read, written in first-person, and the book takes you through an incredibly harrowing digging expedition during which you learn not just what they're after in order to make ends meet financially, but the terrors of the world in which they were born and literally carve out a living.
The book is an easy afternoon read, and very legible and thoughtful layout. (If you purchase it in paperback, you'll see what I mean.) It is at points intense, and as real and gritty (pun unintended) as what the characters experience. The overall entirety of the book is very, very polished. It needed nothing more than exactly how it was, and it's hard to find books like that.
Though I appreciate ""The Twin Cities"" and enjoyed it, this book really shows us Mr. Whitcomb coming into himself as an author. This book is one you definitely need to read- and as for me personally, I usually intensely dislike first-person books! This one is stellar.

Rusted Sky was an awesome read, I highly recommend it. I found myself staying up way past my bedtime with anticipation to find out what was going to happen next. While reading, it felt as if I was along for the journey making it all the more exciting when visualizing the story. Overall the book is an easy and thrilling read but nonetheless the author does not shy away from details. Would like to thank the author for a snippet of adventure through the pages of Rusted Sky. Will recommend to family and friends!

Rusted Sky takes us on a journey through a post-apocalyptic world as told by Lynn, a Digger. Each of her fellow Diggers are unique and come from very different life experiences. The story is told with the details that describe the risks they encounter as they struggle to earn a living and survive in this harsh world. It is hard to put down as you want to discover how their expedition unfolds and ends. I highly recommend this book.
