Description
Little Martin grew up in a family of preachers: his dad was a preacher, his uncle was a preacher, his grandfather was a preacher… so maybe he’d become a great preacher too.
One day, a friend invited him to play at his house. Martin was shocked when his mother wouldn’t let him in because he was black. That day he realized there was something terribly unfair going on.
Martin believed that no one should remain silent and accept something if it's wrong. And he promised himself that – when he grew up – he’d fight injustice with the most powerful weapon of all: words.

While this book is written for young readers, it is beautifully written. It has a lot of the important information about Martin Luther King' life, but is written appropriately. It has enough information for the young reader to really understand the impact that Martin Luther King had. I would recommend this to any one with young readers.
A beautiful board book about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy. Though simplified from the original book, I'd recommend this for preschool-kidergarten age children because if the content. This would make a wonderful gift or a great addition to the classroom.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.
Martin Luther King Jr. is the newest lead in this latest edition of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. This series is such a delight and the perfect way to educate not just kids but everyone about historic and cultural icons.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the American civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. This book follows Martin Luther King Jr. as he becomes a pastor to the delivery of his "I have a dream" speech and his peace price awarded for his work.
Mai Ly Degnan illustrates this installment and does an amazing job. Degnan's art style was so captivating and her art definitely further helped tell Martin's story. I love collecting these books and am so thrilled to add this one to the rest of my collection.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
This is a great little book introducing little children to MLK, Jr. The wonderful illustrations are brightly colored & the words are appropriate to read to little kids, telling about his life at a child's level. It's a great addition to this 'My First Little People BIG DREAMS' series that introduces little kids to lots of different amazing people. I think it's a great book, & series!
I received a complimentary e-copy of the book to read & review, from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my own fair & honest opinion of the book.
I get that this book is the baby edition of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series and that the books need to be shorter but I didn't want this book to end. There are so many amazing things that Martin Luther King Jr. was able to accomplish they cannot all be found in this board book. With that said this is a great starting place for introducing amazing people like MLK to the newest generation of readers.
This is another brilliant addition to this series – even as an adult I look out for the next book in the series being released!
I love the images in this series and this is a delightful introduction to Martin Luther King Jr, one of the most influential and powerful people that has lived. I do think that possibly how his life ended could have been touched up at the end when it had the photos of his life and achievements, but I do also understand why it was missed off with the target audience and the focus on the book is really his "I have a dream" speech.
This series is an excellent introduction to some of the well-known, and less well-known characters that have had a great impact in our lives through a variety of subjects such as literature, the rights of minorities, political influence, women's rights and science.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – a delightful read and one I will be highly recommending!!
This title is part of a series of Little People, Big Dreams stories for the very youngest children. It is never too early for them to learn about the people who are part of their world.
This time the story of MLK is told in simple language and with appealing illustrations. Issues of segregation are noted in a matter of fact tone while clearly making the point that discrimination was/is not okay. Children learn how MLK grew up and tried to help people to look at the world differently. The Civil Rights movement is mentioned as was MLK wanting to protest using peaceful means.
King was an inspiration to many. Let him inspire a child that you know as well.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
This is a great book for any baby! What a fabulous book for any little one's nursery. Little People Big Dreams is a go to for all of our gift books!
The publisher made a copy of this book available for review via Netgalley, This is my honest review.
Martin Luther King, Jr wanted to inspire people from the beginning. From a family of preachers, young Martin wanted to change the world and to talk about things that mattered. The racism in America was, and is, unfair. He was the face of the Civil Rights Movement.
As an educator, I would recommend this book for young elementary students, learning about real people. It would make a perfect addition to a home or classroom library.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the eARC. Opinions expressed are my own.
Part of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series and written by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara.
This short, sensitive mini biography is perfect for any age but is geared for the very young. The language is perfect for ESL also. Very well done!
The illustrations are mostly simple and forthright with brilliant colors thanks to illustrator Mai Ly Degnan.
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
I received an advance copy of this board book from NetGalley and the publisher. It’s a simple introduction to Martin Luther King Jr’s life and offers good wording to equip parents and other adults to start important conversations early.
Martin Luther King Jr, the guy I mixed up with Martin Luther. Never knew his life, but his famous phrase "I have a dream" inspired a lot of people. Including me.
Being black back then was not a happy occasion. Martin suffered a lot, therefore he had this dream, of making a fair world to all.
Always a fan of the series, I look forward to new books by the author and publisher.
These books are just the best. Although, they are marketed for children and think should be, but each speaks to everyone. It gives a piece of history we all need to know.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was an inspiration to so many people, but especially of course African Americans. He asked for non-violence to achieve goals. He gave his famous, ‘I Have a Dream Speech’. He thought each person should be judged by their character.
We are still not there yet, but we should be. Give each person basic fairness and then let each live his/her life.
Thank you NetGalley, and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. Each book is needed.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This board book edition of Martin Luther King Jr is a beautifully illustrated and well worded picture book for children. Martin Luther King was such an inspirational figure and I love that he is being taught about with children of such young ages.
Children will enjoy the illustrations and are sure to question things stated in this book.
Another great edition!
Martin Luther King Jr. by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara provides a simple biography for early childhood learners. It tells how MLK first saw racism and segregation as a child and how he wanted to be able to speak in big words so that he can change people’s hearts. It tells how he learned about peaceful protests and helped lead protests against the bus companies. It spoke of his famous “I have a Dream” speech and how he was awarded a prize for his actions. It ends with how his dream is still not yet finished and how we must all keep working to keep his dream alive.
This is a great book to help introduce MLK to our earliest learners. This would be prefect to start talking about topics of racism and segregation with our younger students.
I think this book does a great job of introducing the littlest readers to the life of Martin Luther King Jr, I felt the beginning of the book was a little choppy in explaining his life and his relation to the civil rights movement, but I really enjoyed how it concluded with the focus on his hopes for the future.
While wandering around NetGalley, I stumbled across this awesome new board book series for babies and toddlers. The vibrant, yet simple, covers displaying historical women that I have grown up learning caught my eye, and it instantly drew me to pick up a few of these books off the shelves. To be totally honest, I was so intrigued by these books that I ended up sitting right down to explore this new nonfiction board book series.
Through my reading and my post-reading research, I have learned that Little People, Big Dreams is a new series that focuses on introducing the youngest of readers to amazing, wonderful women that have influenced the world. Each book is purposely designed in order to highlight one woman who has made a difference in the world. It tells the story of that women's dream and how she was able to make her dream come true despite the biggest of obstacles.
I loved the simplicity of the design of the series, Little People, Big Dreams. The authors and illustrators who have worked on this project clearly understand their audience, and they have made each of the books reflect exactly what they want their youngest of readers to be exposed to. Designed for babies and toddlers, Little People, Big Dreams uses simple text and engaging pictures to tell the story of each woman in a kid-friendly manner.
Often times, my biggest complaint with board books is that they lack plots or messages. Even though board books are purposely designed for babies and toddlers, I absolutely believe they still need to be strong examples of books that contain both strong plots and messages. All age levels of children need to have access to great text.
I loved how Little People, Big Dreams designed their biography series for baby and preschool readers. There are not many nonfiction book series out there. This series is absolutely helping to pave the way to push the norm for what we typically think of when we think of baby books. Little People, Big Dreams series is a positive example of how even our youngest readers can read and learn from awesome books!
