Description
Traces of Magic explores the pre-history of Kentucky, a land strangely uninhabited when Europeans came across the Appalachian Mountains, in ways parallel to how epic tales like the “Lord of the Rings” series unlocked the imagination of the British Isles residents to their pre-history. The story follows the struggles of a group of young adults who get caught up in defending the wonders of their land against an assassins’ guild bent on power and profit regardless of the cost. Knights and bards, clergy and users of magic, as well as many ordinary good people all help defend against the diabolic powers working with that guild to enslave the valley by controlling the weather. In Book 2: Master Kresov’s quarterghost attracts a major devil to earth, and his evil spell book spreads fear in the city. The duke’s royal council searches for it and Paladins clash with Snake Clan scum after Master Edgar burns the book. However, its unprotected destruction lets in that major devil called the Death Monster.

I was optimistic that this second book would hook me faster than the first.
I can't say it did much better, but it was tolerable.
I did like the interweaving of familiar Catholic rites and artifacts within the story as well as the introduction of a purely evil entity that comes into the world.
What I can't put my finger on is why things just don't click for me. Plenty of interesting premises, but something is missing.
