Description

A witty, romantic comedy of errors as former high school rivals McKenna and Henry inadvertently reunite in their hometown.

Hot-shot lawyer McKenna Keaton finds herself in hot water with her own law firm when she’s (falsely!) accused of embezzlement. Placed on unpaid leave, she suddenly finds herself with the free time to return home and attend her youngest sister’s wedding activities.

But it’s not all fun and games. Waiting back home is shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna’s high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess. Scratch that. He’s Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham, North Carolina’s, darling son, who has attained all his dreams and more. He also happens to look like he stepped out of an Eddie Bauer catalog.

Whereas McKenna is a disgraced workaholic from New York on unpaid leave, accused of a white-collar crime she would nevercommit, succumbing to panic attacks, watching her dreams unravel. At age thirty-eight—and destined by the family curse to die before she turns forty, apparently—it’s absolutely the wrong time to have a major crush on a man. Especially one who treasures his memories of McKenna as the girl Most Likely to Succeed.

“Pitch-perfect comedic timing, a relatable heroine, and a refreshing sweetness elevate this novel above the sea of modern rom-coms. The rare author who can make me laugh out loud,?The Do-Over?is Bethany Turner at her best.” —Lauren Layne,?New York Times?bestselling author

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher the opportunity to read and review this book. All thoughts are my own. McKenna is an attorney in New York and is convinced that she is about to become partner. When that all falls apart and she is accused of embezzling, she returns home to North Carolina to spend some time with her family. She reconnects with a high school classmate, who is turns out if very successful and hasn't gotten over McKenna. I loved these characters, this family and want to read more from this author.

Second Chance?

Loved the genealogical/historian/documentarian aspects, they are unique and really made the book for me. I really liked the characters in this book, they were easy to root for. I loved that McKenna and Henry/Hank were able to reconnect and that there was admiration on both sides. McKenna's family was awesome and their support was incredible!
I appreciated the representation of anxiety in this book. I look forward to rereading this one.
This was a sweet read, I'd rate PG for kissing and realistic depictions of anxiety and panic attacks.

McKenna Keaton is expecting to make partner in the law firm where she work, but instead, she walks into a meeting where she is told that she is being investigated for embezzling and being put on a leave until it is complete. She sublets her expensive NY apartment and heads home to Durham, North Carolina to wait it out, knowing she has done nothing wrong. She tells her family she has taken a vacation, as she doesn't want them to know what is happening. Her youngest sister is getting married, so the family is happy to have her home. She meets a childhood friend, Henry, who was once a shy geeky guy, but now a celebrated documentary maker. Henry begins investigating McKenna's great aunt, who has some secret history. It is during this, that McKenna learns about a family curse, that means she could be dead in a year, if curses were real. As she waits for the outcome of the investigation, she begins to rethink what she really wants out of life.

I enjoyed The Do-Over, with it's interesting story. I know the premise is similar to lots of others, but the story with the embezzlement, the documentary and the family history puts a different spin on it. Bethany Turner does a great job of getting us to like both McKenna and Henry and wanting things to work out for them. Their banter was wonderful and it was as if no time had passed for them. McKenna's family was so supportive when she finally tells them what is going on. Her sister and parents were great secondary characters and I can see how McKenna became a self-confident, independent woman until the rug was pulled out from under her. The outcome of the embezzling case was dealt with as well, and it worked. It seemed like something that could really happen. I liked the bit of historical timeline that was also presented and it was all done within an interesting story. This is the first Bethany Turner book I have read and I will watch for others. If you enjoy a story of family, new beginnings, strong women and romance, then you might want to pick this one up.
