Sam Winslow is honing his jump shot on a basketball court in Franklin, Indiana when two men approach him and offer him up to $800,000 for four weeks work. Sam doesn’t hesitate long before acceping. And so the jobless 28-year-old is thrust into the intense world of Brains competition.

At a time when professional football has fallen on tough times, Brains is the big game in the United States. Teams of geniuses and pseudo-intellectuals battle to reach the biggest quiz game of all, the Brains Bowl.

The Chicago Philosophers’ Ahab-like coach, Rock Nelson, is determined to win the Brains title, but the Phils are huge underdogs after losing their history ace in in the last game of the season. Sam’s job is to replace her. His teammates include a California playboy, an ex-secretary of state, an ex-con, a fetching but overwrought beauty from Philadelphia, and a temperamental senior citizen.

All they must do is hang onto their sanity long enough to defeat three powerhouse teams. Studying, partying and growing up along the way, the Phils learn more about life in four weeks than they learned in a lifetime out in “the real world”.
