Description

When The Watcher dies and the demon arrives, the world will be tested again.

Mahilde is the last of an ancient race who harness the power of the Earth but she is waning in a world almost devoid of magic. Her task is to protect the child, the one chance against the darkness, but she cannot do it alone. She finds Malcolm, an ageing mercenary who cares for nothing but coin, and Willich, a hopeless drunkard who longs for his own death. With these two she must spark a rebellion, for the demon Morbus has turned monarchs to his will and their populations into mindless fanatics.

Esther is book I of The Watcher Trilogy, a fast paced adventure in the highest tradition of heroic fantasy.

Advance Praise

I like that the fictional world depicted in the book is simple. The author speaks about ordinary farmers, soldiers, mercenaries, or sailors. Thanks to this simplicity, the book reads almost like a medieval story. Also, I found that the author's approach toward characters is very refreshing. For example, Malcolm is 47 years old when we first meet him. He is not a knight in shining armor; his past holds its tragedies; his future is obscure. Malcolm's character is multilayered. We could say in modern terms that he's experiencing a midlife crisis, trying to find his place in the rapidly changing world. It helps us emotionally connect with him. A hunter named Willich is another interesting character. He lost his beloved wife, Jai, because of his drinking habit. He can kill for a flask of "fire spirit." But "even the most unworthy can earn a second chance." This encouraging refrain follows Willich's storyline, which is the most intriguing in the book, in my opinion. Esther is strong-willed, stubborn, sharp-witted, and hard-working. At first, she appears naive, but she is a fast learner. Her storyline offers many great surprises for readers. Relationships between the characters deserve high praise as well.

This is book is a serious breath of fresh air in a genre that is becoming too squeaky clean (in this reviewer's opinion). This book is gritty, mean, violent and all the things I would associate with a world that involves people hacking at each other with swords. I loved the characters Malcolm 's ego, despite his age, is a really interesting take on the mercenary trope and Willich is so flawed that I couldn't wait to see what mistake he'd make next. Oh, and Esther herself is a badass. I honestly loved this and hope the author (who I haven't heard of before) continues with the series. It ends in a way that makes it seem like the next book will be even better.

A bit late with the review but better than never i say!
This book is really good for hardened fantasy readers. Flawed and badass characters, plenty of violent swordfights... And a strong female lead!
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series for sure.
