Coming soon – the third heartwarming, feel-good instalment in the Cornish Girls series

April 1942. Enemy gunfire on Penzance beach brings the Cornish Girls rushing to the rescue…

Yearning for adventure, Demelza longs to join the fire wardens, and unexpected gunfire on Penzance Beach gives Demelza her first opportunity to get stuck in.

On hand to help the wounded beachgoers, Lily’s nursing skills draw admiration and she’s offered an exciting new position in the hospital in Penzance.

Unsatisfied at work, Lily’s Aunt Violet agrees to take in three evacuees rescued on the beach, though they turn out to be more of a handful than she bargained for.

But even as the war rages around them, the biggest challenge facing each woman turns out to be a challenge of the heart. Can the Cornish Girls support one another in opening up their hearts to love…?

Another great book in the series. Plenty of twists and turns and new characters to meet. Once again the author brings in talking points such as the existence of Conscientious Objectors during the war (my Gran went to a Quaker school so this was poignant for me). Well written, likeable characters and easy to follow I'm already looking forward to the next in the series.

How nice it was to catch up with all the characters. Have read all the other Cornish girls and this one didn't disappoint either, some new characters amongst the old, wonderful storyline as always, a few giggles and tears thrown in to the mix, so hope the Cornish girls continue with the antics

Courage for the Cornish Girls by Betty Walker

A lovely historical war story set in Cornwall which you'd think would have not been too affected by the worries that the war brought.
We follow the lives of 3 women who each in their own way are going some way to help the war effort.
Throw in great friendships , love interests , family , and loss and you have a great plot and very likeable characters.
Can't wait to read what happens next in this saga.

The novel, Courage for the Cornish Girls, is the third in a series. As the title suggests, the setting is Cornwall. This is my first Betty Walker novel. I did some research and so I knew that there was some carryover of characters for each novel but that there were also characters who appeared in each novel. The protagonist in Walker’s novel are all women, and Walker gives each of the three women the opportunity to tell her own story.

It took me a long time to really get into this novel. Initially I was very confused about both the characters and the structure of the novel. Violet’s story was most confusing. Without any sort of backstory, Violet’s family, which consists of Violet and several other women, was confusing. The relationships were truly muddled. A second character, Lily, is part of Violet’s family, which made her story less clear, as well. Only the third character, Demelza, is introduced with a backstory, and so perhaps she was a new character in this novel. The novels flips back and forth between all three narrators.

Courage for the Cornish Girls was an interesting read, though. By the time I felt comfortable with the characters and the narration, I had decided that I liked these women. Walker does a nice job with the history of the period and the location setting. This novel is not a compelling read, but the characters and history work well together. As a stand alone novel, it is less successful, but for Walker’s fans, this third novel will be a popular choice.

I want to thank the author and publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review. And I want to thank NetGalley for providing so many interesting books.
