Description

When Betsy McCall is thrown out of a United Daughters of the Confederacy meeting for daring to question their version of the Civil War, it’s an eye-opener for the feisty journalist. Never one to turn from a fight and sick to death of writing fluffy "society news" Betsy decides to set the record straight of Southern history and find out why her aunt was murdered, and a labor union crushed.

She tries to get help from a colleague who knows the truth. If she can keep him sober, they might have a chance to lay bare the myths and falsehoods causing Southerners to harm one another in the land of Confederate statues and the Rebel flag. They discover whites seized control of the South Carolina legislature from Black officials and forced a President to help topple a governor so a Confederate General can take his place all because of a lie.

Their story stretches from the heyday of slavery, through the Civil War to the Great Depression. It reveals what happens when communities embrace false ideas and provides background for how America’s democracy is at risk because even today there is a plague of bad beliefs.

Note: My book is historical fiction based in South Carolina 1850 to 1936.
