COYOTE LOST AT SEA

The Story of Mike Plant, America’s Daring Solo Circumnavigator

By Julia Plant

The Journey of a Fiery Outlier Who Burned Brightest at Sea

"[Plant] is as close as yachting gets to a James Dean character, going his own way, in his own time, but always with an eye to the sea." – Barbara Lloyd, New York Times

When Minnesota native Mike Plant entered the legendary around-the-world sailing race, The Vendee Globe, he had already completed three solo around-the-world races, beating competitors with more experience, among them Hal Roth. To win, Plant sailed through hurricanes, surfed his boats down six-story waves, and survived a capsizing in 45-foot seas in the Indian Ocean.

Now he had registered for his fourth sojourn, and had two weeks to sail from New York Harbor to Les Sables d’Olonne, France, the starting point of the race.

Plant never arrived. His brand-new boat, Coyote, a relatively untested vessel fraught with technical problems during trial runs in Newport, Rhode Island, was found capsized, with an intact hull and rigging, but the ballast bulb gone.

Plant came to ocean racing late; as an American in a sport dominated by European sailors. He proved his merit by winning his class in the 1986-87 BOC 24,000-mile race. His adrenaline-fueled intensity and charismatic personality attracted hundreds of friends, and his life was lived with great passion and fearlessness, which exhibited itself early on. Some would even call him reckless.

With 35 exclusive photos, COYOTE LOST AT SEA explores the many factors that led Plant to gamble everything on Coyote .
