Tarana Tevulun, the Aspect of Calamity, has waged war for seven years on behalf of her family. When she discovers that they are planning on assassinating her – believing her too volatile to be trusted – she escapes with the help of a trio of mercenaries. Freed from the chains of duty, she returns to her home city of Vicrum only to find it under siege and the factions charged with the city’s defense divided by accusations of duplicity. She must find a way to heal the rift between them, or else the city – and her family – will fall.

Micol, a young soldier, deserts the army after his first taste of battle. A stranger finds him in his disgrace and offers him the opportunity to redeem himself by joining a group of would-be Robin Hoods. As the group’s goals become less heroic, Micol is forced to decide how much of a villain he is willing to become in service to the greater good.

Itan, a follower of Death, travels to a city poisoned against his kind by a heretic. He fights to redeem his order in the eyes of the populace, sacrificing more and more until he is left to choose between his own life and the soul of a people.
