Description
Mirror, mirror on the wall …
Jealousy doesn’t exist in Darby Forester’s vocabulary. Until Caroline, an equally stunning woman, crashes Darby’s perfect fortieth birthday party and reduces her seemingly perfect husband into a horny adolescent in front of the well-wishers.
THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET WORSE.
Shortly after the last guest leaves, Caroline calls Wyatt. Someone is trying to break into her house—where she’s alone and terrified.
Wyatt rides off to the rescue. Darby feels the first brush of fear. Her father was a serial adulterer, abusing her and her sickly mother. Infidelity is, for Darby, a game-changer. One Wyatt has always willingly agreed to.
A call from the ER changes everything.
Wyatt is fighting for his life after a brutal beating. Suspense mounts at the hospital when Darby finds Caroline rode in the ambulance with Wyatt. She is passing herself off as his sister.
The game of cat and mouse escalates.
Caroline baits Darby with innuendoes of Wyatt’s infidelity. Shortly after his hospital admission, he dies. Darby has no idea what Caroline wants. Or who she is. Or why Wyatt was attacked. A mysterious text sends her rushing to meet a stranger claiming to have the answers.
Body count mounts.
Before Darby gets answers that make sense, the stranger is dead. A day later, so is Caroline.
Arrogance. Spite. Payback. Emotionally exhausted and disillusioned, Darby hires a PI. The secrets he ferrets out point to a murder in her past. Can she dodge the payback?

The Best Wife
by AB Plum
This a domestic thriller that had me reading into the wee hours, and more the next day. Jealousy doesn’t exist in Darby Forester’s vocabulary. Until Caroline, an equally stunning woman crashes Darby’s perfect fortieth birthday party and reduces her seemingly perfect husband into a horny adolescent in front of the well-wishers.
Darby is stunned to find out that Caroline was seeing her husband. Wyatt is there, and the mystery was why he was beaten while at Caroline's home. Then he dies at the hospital.
Caroline is playing Darby with calls, and texts after Darby's husband's death. Things become worse as Caroline death days later. Darby hires a P.I. and digs deeply to find answers. Then the truth comes to light.
This was a good book and I was in no way guessing the reasons or why.
This storyline had potential but I didn’t love it because I felt like there were so many unanswered questions. It centers on Darby, who believes her husband Wyatt is having an affair when he is beaten and killed. The “other woman”, Caroline, seems to be involved somehow in the murder. As more bodies are found, Darby, along with the help of a PI, Miguel, and her best friend, Stephanie, try to get to the bottom of it.
I didn’t really get Darby- did she really love Wyatt or not? I felt like she went back and forth on that. I also didn’t understand her relationship with Stephanie at all- she talks about them being best friends but many of their conversations demonstrated snarkiness and annoyance. Also, while there was a lot of action in the book, it was bogged down by so many details around thinks like what everyone was ordering for breakfast and what route Darby used to jog, not to mention an overuse of metaphors to describe how she was feeling at any given time.
I saw the twist coming but the reasons behind it were a surprise. While some loose ends were tired up, others were not and I was left with some unanswered questions.
Overall, this one just wasn’t for me- I didn’t connect with the characterization or the writing style. Hope others who like the mix of domestic suspense and murder mystery enjoy it more. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. It was kind of slow going and alot more fluff then needed, but a good suspense story. I wanted to read to the end to see what happened and if her husband was really the jerk she thought he was. Overall, three stars.
The best Wife is married to the best Husband. Or not.
This book takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions. Well written, fast paced and a surprise on every page. I started out thinking it was the same story I had read over and over but decided to give this book a chance. I’m delighted to say I did because it was nothing like any of the previous book I had likened it to.
The characters were almost lifelike and I felt I understood and knew each one as they were described. Don’t be fooled by what you read in the beginning because things change rapidly and characters you feel you like may not be so innocent and as nice as you first thought.
All in all a great book and I’m already looking forward to reading more from this author.
