Irish vagabond and revered author of Killoyle (Dalkey Archive Press) and other Irish farces, Roger Boylan, is traveling down an unexplored publishing road. Boylan’s much-anticipated magnum opus, The Adorations, moves like a fugue through the history of 20th Century Europe. Gustave, a hard-drinking middle-aged atheist, has gone off his rocker. He’s having visions that the Archangel Michael is working his angles, though reasonably and politely, to recruit Gustave into his legions of divine warriors. At least he thinks they’re visions. To clear his mind of this nonsense he doesn’t believe in anyway, Gustave enlists the help of some psychiatrists, a rather regrettable decision.

However, thanks to a chance encounter in a psychiatrist’s waiting room, Gustave’s life is changed by a writer who has just published the biography of Stefanie von Rothenberg, another reluctant mystic, who envisions steady visits from one Adolf Hitler. Something is eerily similar, and Gustave begins to feel an all-too-familiar connection to Stefanie’s story. Somehow, could it be his own?

Brazen, boisterous, and madcap in all the best ways, The Adorations is indeed a novel in double time as Stefanie and Gustave’s stories (and, quite possibly, their minds) begin to blur around the edges.
