Description

When Sherman Rehabilitation center suffers its first murder in decades, authorities race to find a motive as the media swarms.  The brutality is unprecedented even for a prison setting.  One week later, eighty-seven-year-old Elmer Ray strolls into the local Ohio Patrol Station claiming he has all the answers.  First, they need to hear about the two most interesting people in the world: Adrian Franklin and Conner Wallace.

Adrian Franklin, the young neighbor of Elmer Ray, lived a trouble life of neglect and abuse.  He had a bad haircut and worse nickname. The old man tries to take the boy under his wing in a way no one else has ever done.

Conner Wallace, a British National, a pugilist with a quick wit.  He roamed the west and lived by an unbreakable code.  He finds a safe haven in an underground fight scene on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

What does a young boy and foreigner have to do with a brutal prison murder?  Only Elmer Ray knows the answers and he is giving them until authorities listen how their lives converge with an Appalachian drug dealer, a sexual predator, and a mob boss to influence the brutality in that prison cell.

I realize that saying The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart, by Shane T. Clark's dark, gritty novel about friendship and revenge, is masterfully paced and suspenseful to the upmost degree sounds like the usual promotional B.S., but honestly, people, this book kept me reading way past my bedtime, and I don't find many that can do that these days.  I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

I'm not a huge fan of a slow burn but this was done so expertly. Before you knew what was happening you were sucked in, became Clark's bitch and you had no choice but to get on board and let him tell his story HIS way. And it worked! A really great story about deep love, loss, grief and vengeance. Adrian was so raw, stripped bare, and deeply traumatized that even when he did unspeakable things you were so invested in him you forgave him, (or at least saw where he was coming from). Old man Elmer was like a salve to Adrian's deep wounds. The relationship between them was masterfully handled and palpable. Every time Adrian got knocked down, (which only got revealed in drips and drabs you had to piece together) I kept thinking how much more can this man handle. Although it was revealed in the beginning, the way the story unfolded it seemed like a twist at the end that hits you like a frying pan to the face! I usually figure out the ending of stories pretty quickly, this one knocked me right out my socks! And even though Adrian kept getting back up, it was Elmer (at 87 years old) who showed true strength and resilience. We all could use an Elmer in our lives. I highly recommend readers to grab this book. Well worth the read!

The Devil Won't Keep US Apart is a diabolical psychological thriller and journey into the depths of darkness.

The backstory is that of a brutal murder that occurred at Sherman Rehabilitation Center. As the police are searching for answers, in enters Elmer Ray, an elderly man, who says he knows who committed the crime and why. Before providing the answers, he says he’s going to tell a story. The story of a troubled young man, Adrian Franklin, who he took under his wing and tried to guide and nurture, and that of a drifter, a British national named Connor Wallace, on a quest to settle a score.

The characters in The Devil Won't Keep Us Apart are well-developed and relatable. They possess depth and complexity, making them more than mere archetypes. Clark skillfully explores the nuances of human relationships, capturing the highs and lows with sensitivity and authenticity.

Carefully and skillfully weaving a complex narrative riddled with intriguing characters and emotional depth, Clark’s exceptional ability at storytelling is one to commend. Clark delivers an engrossing reading experience with an intricately and exceptionally crafted plot that blends the elements of mystery, suspense, and thrill seamlessly.

With his background as an adjunct professor of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Deviant Behavior, author Shane T. Clark weaves a tale of violence and vengeance that stays with you long after reading the final chapter. Five stars, I recommend adding this story to your collection.

Thank you to Shane T. Clark and NetGalley for the ARC and for Shane Clark for publishing this masterpiece.

This book was amazing! I loved the relationship between Elmer and Adrian. That twist at the end tho.... did not see it coming. This is definitely a must read. I will be on the look out for future books by this author.
