Absolutely loved this book. So easy to understand, the photography was amazing and a unique quality to the book. I will absolutely pick this up when it hits shelf’s. A kitchen must have!
This Book of Natural Body Care by Mountain Rose Herbs is a beauty. Full of TONS of foundational information, amazing pictures, and recipes for your hair, face, lips, skin, and hands and feet. There are also recipes for shower and bath enhancements and herbal remedies for common ailments.
This book goes into detail about choosing your own tools and materials, with you, the plants, and the planet in mind. There is a Guide to Carrier Oils, a Guide to Substituting Ingredients in the boy care recipes, charts on absorption and consistency for different oils and butters, guides based on your skin type, and much much more. This book is a veritable gold mine for anyone interested in Natural Body Care and doing things for yourself!
Plus, every single picture in the book is absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a guide into natural body care, or if you are just looking for the recipes. So much good stuff here!
Thanks Netgalley and Timber Press for the opportunity to review this eARC in exchange for my honest review on the book!
This book was easy to understand and incredibly helpful for anyone looking to make some DIY body care in a sustainable way. I really really appreciated that the author included such in depth information on foundational knowledge (about 1/4 of the book!) before moving on to the recipes. This is different than some similar DIY books that tend to throw the reader and assume knowledge. The recipes themselves were easy to follow and really well laid out. This book is definitely staying on my reference shelf for future DIY adventures.
Stunning photographs, and lovely recipes for DIY sustainable beauty products. With an in-depth overview of choosing your tools and materials, this book also has a truly in-depth foundational knowledge behind the ingredients. Although geared toward the beginner, this would be a great addition to the more advanced natural beauty product lover as well.
Thank you Netgalley and Timber Press for the ARC!
This is a great book for learning the basics of making your own skin care recipes and more. It really goes into detail in how to start, all about carrier oils, what various herbs do for your skin and hair, what you can substitute for what, etc. There are many recipes for things like hair rinses, body scrubs, cuticle oils, belly butters, bath bombs and much more. There are gorgeous color photos of every one, too.
I personally find that I really go back to incredibly simple recipes for my own beauty and body recipes (examples -- a simple paste of baking soda and water gently applied to breakouts and then rinsed is the single best acne treatment I've ever found, and I made a roll-on oil that regrew my thinning eyebrows with just rosemary essential oil in a castor oil carrier, used daily for a few months). These were a little too fiddly for me, even though they are far less fiddly than most books of this type. I do not necessarily need five ingredients and many steps. Sometimes just knowing the ways something like castor oil can solve a hundred problems is enough. I would have liked a few basic "recipes" like that, even though I know most books try to make more sophisticated recipes. Even though I have a house stocked with foraged and home grown herbs, basic ingredients like bentonite clay and carrier oils, essential oils, dried flowers, etc., there were virtually no recipes in the book where I wouldn't need to buy at least one ingredient or take the time to infuse something for a long time. I still loved the book, but I am a fan of also including a lot of really basic, wonderful remedies.
I read a temporary digital copy of this book for review.
The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care is really well done. It has very detailed skin care instructions and information with excellent recipes m. The book Aldo has a great section on substitutes and what to consider when deciding whether or not to change your recipes. I found it invaluable and have learned so much! I have already placed a pre-order as a gift.
The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care by Shawn Donille is a true gem of a book. There are tons of recipes for body and self care accompanied by beautiful photographs. The book is easy to follow as it takes you step by step. I have tried a few recipes for skincare, and they came out and worked beautifully. I highly recommend this book. I will be in line to purchase this book for myself, and as Christmas gifts for friends and family.
This is an extremely clear, straightforward, and helpful guide to creating all sorts of natural body care items. This would be especially helpful if you were starting a small business or looking to make these items for yourself and/or your family. Recipes like dry shampoo are especially helpful in light of recent discoveries that the aerosolized options contain benzene.
The photography in this book is also stunning and makes it very easy to flip through and enjoy.
Loved this book: well written, full of lovely project richly illustrated and easy to follow
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Thank you Timber Press and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this wonderful book. This book is a great compilation of recipes covering a wide range of needs. It’s geared toward a beginner with step-by-step instructions. A great gift for any DIY-er, I’ll be getting one for myself as well to keep these great suggestions and recipes close by.
Loved this book and love ordering my herbs from Mountain rose herbs! Lovely recipes and beautiful photos.
Thank you netgalley for an arc copy.
As an aspiring herbalist, I have searched for a very long time for a book of natural body care and haven’t been too impressed with the books that I have come across. When I found out that this book was coming out I was ecstatic! I love Mountain Rose Herbs and have purchased many of my tinctures and dried herbs from them for a very long time. I also enjoy reading their blog, which is a wonderful source of information for timely herbal recipes for just about everything. So when I found out about this book I knew it had to be wonderful, and guess what, it is !!
This book is laid out so well and starts by providing a foundational knowledge, such as the tools and containers you will need, carriers oils and how to use them properly, how to substitute ingredients, how to preserve what you make and how to infuse oils. Following the foundational knowledge chapter you will find chapters of detailed well laid out recipes for hair care, facial care, lip care, skin care, support for hands and feet, shower and bath enhancements and ending with herbal remedies for common elements.
My favorite chapter is the one that covers facial care. This chapter gives recipes for facial washes, toners, serums, moisturizers, emulsions and masks. I think I may have found recipes to help me with my dry skin issues, and three are very nourishing and quite easy to make. My second favorite chapter is the formulations for glowing skin, and the recipes for body scrubs and butters are amazing. While these are my two favorite chapters of this book, truly all chapters are filled with wonderful easy to follow simple recipes using things you may already have in your apothecary or even in your pantry.
I give this book a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review and highly recommend it for anyone who is a herbalist or simply someone who wants to learn how to make their own natural skin care products. This book is another one I will definitely be adding to my personal herbal book collection, and one that would be a great gift for the herbalist in your life.
A Must Have Book
Shawn Donnille discusses the basic knowledge in dealing with natural body care, along with some needed tools and supplies. He provides a list of some of the handiest receptacles needed, they are:
1. Bottles with dropper tops
2. Bottles with screw caps
3. Bottles with treatment pumps
4. Glass jars
5. Lip balm tubes
6. Roll-top glass bottles
7. Air-tight storage jars
He, also, discusses various herbs and essential oils for hair and skin. Two of the most important things the author discusses in this book are:
1. The Guide to Substituting Ingredients in Body Care Recipes
2. The Guide for Substituting Ingredients in Body Care Recipes
This is by far, one of the best books I've read dealing with natural body care. It is packed with lots of great information and recipes. Highly recommend.
Impressive as expected.
Mountain Rose is a trusted company who takes time on quality herbs and herbal information. They are my go-to for supplies and herbs. Anyone interested in Natural ingredients will love this book. Very informative, with step by step for beginners and amazing recipes if you happen to be knowledgeable already.
Thank you Timber Press for providing an advanced copy via NetGalley.
I have long known Mountain Rose Herbs to be a wise presence in the herbal community. Founded by the godmother of herbalism, Rosemary Gladstar, Mountain Rose Herbs has a long standing and strong reputation for quality and deep knowledge of herbs and health.
The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care is a testament to their knowledge. The recipes are varied and interesting. This is a collection that is just a little different than other similar books on the market. Various hair treatments, makeup remover, and homemade sheet face masks are just a few examples of additions that aren’t normally explored in similar books.
The book begins with a chapter on foundational knowledge. It’s written simply, yet is full of the information needed to be successful with this collection of recipes. The recipes are easy to follow but will be fully effective for their intended use. The photography is beautiful and displays the resulting product accurately.
The ingredients could be found locally, depending on your community. If not, Mountain Rose Herbs has a wonderful online store. Bonus: their website is full of even more information and ideas.
I’ll be adding The Mountain Rose Herbs Book of Natural Body Care to both my personal library and my public library shelves soon.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley, Timber Press, and Mountain Rose Herbs for a digital ARC of this book, in exchange for my honest review.
